220.0. "R n R" by ASAHI::COOPER (In pumps life that I must feel) Wed Nov 29 1989 13:27

'R n R' is a new band based in Greenville, SC. We do tunes from
Guns And Roses, Beatles, Poison, Bad Company, Free, BTO, Clapton,
Edgar Winter... Ya know, a little of everything "Classic Rock"...

I like to compare us to another favorite from this file "Sorry!".
If you like Sorry!'s material, you'll like ours. We're not quite
as polished as Sorry!, but I hope that with time we will be.

Not too much metal, but I'm working on 'em. ;^)

    The members:

    Richard Wooten:	Lead Vox/Acoustic guitar
    Steve Dandrea:	Lead Guitar/vox
    Jeff Cooper:	Lead Guitar/vox
    Jim Austin: Bass Guitar/vox
    Hunter Brown:	Percussion

The band was born when we (Steve, Hunter and myself) played a
pick-me-up gig for a mutual friends going away party. We pulled
it off pretty well considering it was two guits and a drummer...
    no vox, nobass...etc...

We've been together for almost a month, and we've already started
playing some gigs at local taverns. There is a real market for
the type of material we're doing.

I hope that if your ever in the area, you'll come out to hear us.
We like playing for rowdy crowds.

Steve, I called Clancy's Lounge, and the manager is supposed to
    get back to me.

Do you think I should get in contact with Chuck's manager tonight
and get them out to the gig on Friday or Saturday?

I like the banner by the way.. should be a little bit bigger though?

almost 60% more in cost, and this one wasn't cheap.

220.14- The Scary Review -ASAHI::SCARYJoke 'em if they can't take a ...Sat Dec 16 1989 08:2359
OK, let me be the first to comment on R n R's maiden voyage ...

I'll start with the bad points of the evening !

1 - There was no where to park. Both upper and lower parking lots
were full with cars along the side of the road. Several cars
were towed away from adjacent buildings.
2 - There were no seats. Elbow to elbow, shoulder to shoulder,
whatever to whatever .... 8^) Yes, it was *that* crowded !
3 - Thirsty ? Forget it ... if there had been 2 more bartenders
and 4 more waitresses, that place would have made a small
	    fortune.
4 - The dance floor stayed occupied most of the night, which was
great for the band but a pain for the sound guy, cuz' there
was no snake and the board was right in the strike zone !

.... and that's as bad as it ever got !

Now for the good points ....

1 - Great song selection. There was a little something for
everyone. No heavy metal, but it wasn't a heavy metal club.

2 - Great vocals and some surprising harmonies. Didn't know you
	    guys had it in ya.

3 - What do you get when you cross a poseur and a wireless guitar ?
The wandering poseur, that's what. Coop played on his back,
sitting down, on top of tables (slide guitar with a beer bottle
no less ...). But ya can't pogo with a belt pack, can ya Coop ?

4 - Let me brag on Steve Dandrea a minute .... I haven't heard that
many tasteful licks in 4 sets in a L O N G time. He simmered
on the B.B. King tunes, and wailed on the Skynyrd. This guy
has no need for pointed headstocks and maple necks, that's for
	    sure !

5 - Hunter plays just like you'd think he would (you'd have to see
the mits on this guy ... they'd easily cover the screen you're
looking at !). Straight ahead, no-flash no-f*ck up playing.
Nice Sonor kit too ! Gotta mike 'em next time though !

6 - Jim (bass) has found his niche in classic rock. Metal gave him
some troubles in the past, but this format was a cake walk.

Overall the holes were few and far between . The capacity crowd was still
there wanting more a 01:30 when I left. There is a large market for
classic rock in this area, so these guys better keep their weekends open !

Yeah, thanx guys. We had an absolute blast playing there. It wouldn't
have been as fun if it wasn't for the folks who attended and made
us feel at home. Now, all we have to do is get Mike to build a bigger
    stage (or club!).

Got pretty lucky on the draw Friday night. According to Mike
(the owner), that was the second best night he'd had since he opened
the place (a couple of years ago). We only missed the record by
    $200. ;^(

Anyhow, he liked us so much that he wants to book us thru June.
So, it looks like Thurs.-Saturday night once a month for a while.
Now, all we gotta do is fill up Al's Pumphouse and we'll be SET!

Thanks to ALL who came out to cheer us on, we really appreciate
it. And special thanks to Jerry (for running sound) and CJ who put
up with us TWO nights in a row.

    See y'all at Al's !!

I've gotta hand it to you guys, you definately impressed the crowd.
You wouldn't believe the amount of people who asked for a business
card, or wanted to find out when you are playing again. Hopefully
you'll pack 'em in at Al's on Thursday. Should I contact Chuck's
or not? ;-) You guys definately pleased the crowd, not only
are you musicians, but you have great stage presence, and you are great
"entertainers". Although, you should stay inside the club when it is
cold outside, see what it did to your equipment? ;-) And leaving poor

Sorry Alan, ya can't claim any credit for our song selection. It came
about kinda funny. When we hired the singer, we started playing a
bunch of tunes that HE knew, a bunch of tunes that I knew, and a bunch
of tunes that Jeff knew. It just sorta evolved. Does Coop have Sorry's
song list? Coop do you have Sorry's song list? I'd like to compare it
to ours. Maybe we can "steal" a few. 8)

To save face boize, the only reason we do Sweet Home is because

Hunter (mega-drummer) and I have a little solo peice that we'll

with over the neck taps, harmonics, wierdo time signatures, strange

hot himself this weekend. You guys need to hear him wail on "Born to

Yeah, we do alot of overplayed tunes, that's why our format is called
Classic Rock, and why everybody dances, smiles, sings along, yells,
stomps, and generally makes total fools of themselves while we're
playin' for 'em. Besides, you aint heard "Sweet Home" 'til you heard

From a musicians standpoint, alot of our tunes were on the air TOO long
and people got sick of 'em. But we're tryin ti stick with the
"anthems"; the Classics; and so far, it's workin. There's some good

It's classic enough... It's on all the Juke boxes. ;^) Besides,
    the women will go nutz.

Steve, being really old (I'll pay for this), and me being rather
young (27) have different opinions on what "Classic rock" is...
Steve tends to pull out tunes that EVERYONE knows... Like Sweet
Home Alabama. I'm more apt to come up with a tune everyone who
went to high school in the late 70's-early 80's would think "classic".

Crowds on different nights, and in different clubs will need to be
catered to somewhat. As time goes on and we get settled, we may
be learning some "newer" classics...Like Dio and Rainbow, Ozzy and
Sabbath, AC/DC, Van Halen, Thin Lizzy etc...

    Hi Brian,

Yeah we do all that stuff in a night. Sometimes we drop a few lam-O's
on Thursdays and Saturdays because of the early closing laws here.
We seem to add 3-4 tunes a week to that list, so we can clear out
the dead tunes. I've only got 666 more runs thru "I Saw Her Standin'
There" before I spontaneously combust on stage....now that will
    be a show !

    Imagine the headlines...

Local Tavern Crowd Seared by Guitarist

"Greenville, SC. (UPI) Local guitarist bursts into flames before
an awe-struck audience at Shooter's in Greenville last night.
Sources indicate that the guitarist, Jeff Cooper of Simpsonville,
showed only mild homocidal tendancies before the big poof snuffed
     out his Beatle's-cover-song infested career.

While performing "I Saw Her Standing There" (by The once great
Beatles), a sudden flash of blue flame erupted from Cooper's
MIDI rack. The flames quickly singed thru his long hair, and
     melted his pewter cross/snake earring.

Jerry White, also a guitarist from Greenville sobbingly reports "As
the flames scorched his red Charvel, the muted and strained notes of
the lead to Metallica's 'Fight Fire With Fire' could be heard.
White (aka - Mr. Scary), walked away mumbling:

"It was beautiful man, really...And he never did get that lead
     right"

I don't like Al's because the owner is a fat slob-red neck ugly SOB,
is cheap as hell, and thinks it's our privilige to play at his
establishment. Not to mention that the stage is too small and
oddly shaped, and the acoustics s*ck.

    Other than that, it's okay.

Now Shooters is too small (in total and on stage) but the owner
is cool and the crowd ROCKS ! I'd play there for free... Well,
    maybe not for free but...
