662.0. "Producers/Engineers" by HAZEL::STARR (DJ Bag Man and the Condom Crew) Mon Sep 11 1989 15:11

Well, I just picked up Gary Moore's CD "Corridors of Power", and it has an
amazing guitar sound on it. It was produced by Jeff Glixman, who also did
another of my favorite guitar-sound CDs, The Georgia Satellites debut.

So I thought I would start a note on HM producers and engineers, and see if
anyone has any favorites out there. I know I've discussed Eddie Kramer in this
notesfiles (Hendrix, Zeppelin, Kiss, Trimuph, Fastway and more). And also
there was some discussion on Jeff 'Mutt' Lange (Def Lep, AC/DC, etc.).

Any others that come to mind? Any comments you want to make about these or
other great producers you can think of?

That name sounds familiar - is the guy who did all the ZZ Top albums also?
If so, we all know that he can get a great guitar sound!

Motley Crue just dumped their old producer for Bob Rock - some up
and coming fellow musician. Apparently they wanted to go for someone
who was closer to their own ages and had not become set in his ways.

Mutt Lange, he produces Def Leppard.

Mutt Lange also produced several of the AC/DC albums of more recent
vintage. I think he also did some Van Halen too.

He's known for getting a really gutsy guitar sound on record.

There was a TV special on Def Leppard here in the UK a couple of
weeks ago. Much of it revolved around Mutt's influence on the group
sound and the effect that had on the groups subsequent success.

Mutt lange's big production sound and knack for "perfect" arrangements
can be heard on albums by Def Leppard (last 3), AC/DC (Highway,
Back in Black, and For those..), Loveryboy, and Billy Ocean.

Ted Templeman was the guy behind Van Halen's sound. He also did
Aerosmiths _Done With Mirrors_ lp and the Bullet Boys debut.

One producer who has done a lot of good stuff is Michael Wagener.
He's done stuff for Dokken, Metallica, and others.

Also, to show you what influences a producer has, Metallica's latest
started out being produced by Steve Thompson and Michael Barbiero, from
Tesla and G&R fame. Metallica couldn't work with them and went back to
their old producer Flemming Rasmusen. However, they kept the other two
to mix the album, and that was a mistake. Because ...and Justice For
All has a much whimpier sound than Master, which was killer for
production and sound quality. ST & MB are used to working with Tesla
which uses a much cleaner, smoother, nicer sound, and that didn't help
    ...AJFA.

Bob Rock also just produced The Cult's Sonic Temple, which I wasn't big
on the production. (Referring to an earlier note)

    RE: AJFA's wimpier sound.

Thats cuz Steve and Mike are LA cats, and they always mix on those
squeeky clean SSL boards...they all listen to music out in their cars
in Cali, so they mix for the car...they will do a mix and run down and
pop it in the car to see how it sounds! Those Thompson/Barbiero mixes
usually sound good in the car, but lousy on a stereo, if you've
    noticed!
662.14For the CAR!CSC32::G_HOUSEDoes a bear wear a funny hat?Thu Sep 21 1989 23:2712
Mixed for the car? Didn't they do Tesla's Great Radio Controversy? I
think it sounds really bad in the car. It's way too thin, EQed real
high. You have to turn it up to somewhere around the pain threshhold
to get it to sound good in my car. It sound much better on my stereo
    at home! (IMO)

AJFA wimpy? I don't think so at all. I think that the guitar sound is
just as heavy as the earlier ones, it's just a little smoother. My
understanding was that was the way Metallica wanted it. (Of course, I
listen to it about 99% of the time in the car...)

Anyway, back at the subject of this note (producers)...

Glyn Johns (if I've got this correct) is another name that rings a
bell. He did some work with the Who in the early 70s along with a host
    of other people.

On the whole though I tend not to remember producers (unless they mess
things up, substituting themselves for the band, eg Jim Steinman and
    Trevor Horn).

my award goes to micheal wagner and ted templeman, wagner for the white
lion material and the doken albums.he knows how to get a solid good
    up front guitar sound.

ted templeman for the legendary "montrose" album, this album is at least
16 years old and still rates with anything thats being produced today,
it has stood the test of time.

I think the Elefante brothers and Michael Omartian are awesome
    producers!

Omartian is the only producer to have produced a #1 song in each of the
    last 3 decades! ('70s, '80s, '90s).

Know who they were for??? The one from the 80's must be Rod Stewart, they did
some work together (in fact, Omartian produced all but one song on the album -
he refused to produce that one song because of the lyrics!).

Yes, he was involved with a slew of bands...as was his brother,
	forget his name.

Traffic, Joe Cocker, Family, Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, the Who,

legendary (really, I mean it!!!) stuff he worked on.

The Kinks, Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Traffic, Led Zeppelin.
