183.0. "Unknown but shouldn't be" by PIWACT::KELLY (I'm so bad...it's a crime..291-9089) Wed Aug 03 1988 19:28

This conference has done a good job in covering the more popular
bands. But what about the lesser known bands that should get some
recognition? Bands like Tesla. Granted that Tesla is gaining
popularity but I'm sure you can see what I mean.

Another band that should be recognized is Fith Angel. Their
self titled debut album is killer. I dont know how well the sales
are but I NEVER hear them on the radio. Even when radios have a
HM show they never get played and they should.

Do you have a band in mind that has an album or two and you
think they should be noticed? What are your comments?

Another band that came to mind after I read the pervious note and
realized I forgot to sign it,is Testament. They have two albums
out and both are good, worth looking into if you like your music
    a little heavier than usual

Also, more wider known, but should still be
                bigger . . .

                unheard of band.

re .2 Metal Church?? They're well known. They have two albums
that did very well, they toured with Anthrax. They get played on
the radio when the radios have the HM shows and..AND even eMpTy
V plays their vid Watch the Childern Pray.

But they did loose their lead git. He was supposed to start
another band, where is he?? And MC was supposed to have another
    album out, where are they??

Yes, Doug Marks is the founder of the Metal Method guitar instruction
system (via mailorder). he is the guitarist for the group Hawk.
I went to college with, and am good friends with Hawk's bassist.
I hear all the dirt of Doug Mark's ...he's a funny dude. I'm
sort of surprised he sounds like ngwie now, but I should have
figured as much (who doesn't want to be Yngwie these days???),
he used to be the ultimate Randy Rhoads clone.

(especially if you are a drummer, unbelievable
drums). I highly recommend "Reign of Terror".
They are pretty heavy, not thrash though, more
along the lines of Metal Church sort of group
(warning: some people have mentioned that it's a
good band, but they hate the singer's voice, I
                happen to love it).

Well, I can give a littleinsight into a couple of these bands, although
I'm sure someone else knows more about some of them.

Smashed Gladys is a band on Elektra Records. They are similiar to the
latest wave of LA metal, but have a female lead singer.

UDO is led by Udo Derkshneider, who is constantly having his name mispelled
by idiots like me. He was also the lead singer for Accept. He played in
Boston with G&R at the Orpheum.

Both Savatage and Black and Blue have been kicking around for a while and
have a fewe alums out each. Never heard Savatage. What I heard of B&B
didn't impress me very much. Very unoriginal hard rock/HM band.

Never heard of Shok Paris. Sorry.

Savatage - had a song out called "She's Unusual". OK, but
                   nothing real great.

Black 'n' Blue - their self-titled album contained a cover
of Sweet's "Action" - OK for a cover, but
I'll take the original ANYDAY, thank you.

I personally love Savatage. Real similar to the
Metal Church sort of music. Very talented band.
I saw them with Megadeth and Dio, and at the time
I had only heard one song by them (Hall of the
Mountain King), but playing live, they were
better than the other two. Real good band.

Magnum have been going for at least 10 years now but have never
got the recognition they deserved until there latest album
"Wings of Heaven" was released. They then had 3 singles in the top
40 in the UK and a sell out UK tour.
I was just wondering how well known they are in the states?
There last 2 albums are quite commercial, while there earlier material
was very original although I can't think of any group to compare
    them with.

They are quite unknown (in France), but not for me. I love them.
Everybody keep saying they are cloning Foreigner, but I think
    they are better than it.

I have "On a storyteller night" which is great. I also have "Vigilante"
and some others on tape, and I like them all.

    Good band for me

Well, I guess this is the right place to put this
although I don't know if the band shouldn't be unknown
because I've never heard them, but if any of you have,
then say something, because I'm curious as to what kind
of reaction this band will get.

They're called D'Molls, and below is a couple of exerpts
(sp?) from an article in March's issue of Hit Parader...

"They kinda look like Poison. They kinda sound like
Motley Crue. They kinda talk like Ratt. But, believe
it or not, the guys in D'Molls are their own men.
Despite any superficial similarities these four Chicago
natives may have with other members of rock society,
vocalist Desi Rexx, guitarist S.S. Priest, drummer
Billy Dior and bassist Lizzy Valentine have their own
way of getting their musical message across..."

"We don't mind the comparisons with other bands -- in
fact, we kind of expected them. But we know that after
people listen to our album and see us live, we'll be the
band they'll be comparing young groups to in the years
    	ahead..."

These are just a couple paragraphs from the article, but
by reading the rest of it myself and seeing the picture
they have here, I think they are going to be THE biggest
glam band ever!!!! I could be wrong, because I haven't
heard their music yet, but there's one guy in this band
who is the spitting image of Vince Neil when the Crue
    	first started.

And with names like what they have (lizzy valentine?!)
ay yi yi....anyone got info on these guys??

band to be incredibly arrogant and unoriginal, but
since I have yet to hear the music, I am trying to
keep an open mind about it.

Some people would consider that statement (comparisons
to other bands) arrogant, others would look at it
as though it was merely a boost for their self-confidence.
The band was talking to a magazine, the media, of

    Yo, Scary....

Man, I mean, Nitro as a band leaves some to be desired, but man Angelo
is so sick.....I mean, give the guy and his chops some credit. All the
heavies on the scene dig what Angelo can do...Vai, Malmsteen, Gilbert,
MacAlpine....they all cite Angelo as inspiration for part of their own
techniques. Even some heavy guitar dudes in the Boston area who
are on the verge of Shrapnel deals themselves dig Angelo as the
new guitar_god_in_waiting. Yngwie is gone, welcome Micheal Angelo
    to the throne.

I'll give him credit like I would give credit to Vinnie Vincent.
I mean if you're fast with NO taste, it's noise. The guy was wicked
fast, but I just didn't hear anything with any feeling, and YES
you can have feeling along with lightning lix ! Malmsteen and Vai
are prime examples .... they can burn with the best of them but
they can make a guitar sing too. Bottom line for me is that this
guy just didn't show me anything new ... just more of the same thing
faster.... maybe the album shows another side of him.

Okay....I've heard this great song--they play it out here all
the time....and I want some more info on the group.

Their name is Bad English and the song is "Forget Me Not".

All I know about them is that they're made up of some members
from Journey and another group (didn't catch the name). Two
of the members are John Waite and Jonathan Caine.

The song's wicked good....do they have an album out? Who are
the other members of the group (and what's the other group
	 they're originally from)?

I believe the 'big' names are singer John Waite (from the Babys, also had a
big solo hit with "Missing You"), keyboardist Jonathan Cain (from the Babys
and Journey), and guitarist Neil Schon (Journey). I don't know who makes up
the rhythm section....

I think the album will be out shortly - you must have heard the advance single.

REPLY TO 5.
This is true, I'm still wondering why....ANTHRAX's cover song
"Antisocial" is more known than the original version by TRUST!!
But who knows TRUST wrote this song ??
But who knows TRUST anyway, except french, and maybe other europeans
    HM fans ??
Moreover, this great band: FISC (means IRS) is even unknown in France!!

Hey, d'you guys know that very nice french band called LORELEI
    STARSET ?
I really enjoyed their first demo tape called "The River By The
Water", it's pretty good stuff....good drums, good vocals, interesting
    guitar, really.
Does anyone knows if they got a LP out ?

Fifth Angel, I bought that album, I thought for sure I'd more about
    them - nothing.

Also, Savatage is totally underated and unheard of, do these guys have
their own file? They should , maybe I'll start one.

Well, she's got a very raspy, bluesy (?) type sound,
I guess. I've never heard any other song by her that
I'm aware of but this song is AWESOME

The name of the band is Idle Cure.

	They're excellent!

They have a couple of albums out, I just heard the
latest one last week...but I can't remember the name of
it, oh well. Anyway, they are really very good and you'd
never know they are a Christian band - you have to listen
	very closely to the lyrics.

        Tigga,

Just talked to Terry and she is going to see if they have the
tape on the shelf. If not, she's going to order it for me. I'll
post something once I hear the album. I'm psyched!! ;^)

I posted a note in Music awhile back asking about Allona (sp?)
Miles and no one there had heard of her. I was struck by that song
"Black Velvet" and the real cool (down and dirty) slow groove they
lay down. It's got "sin" written all over it and will have to go
down in the record books as a "good song to make love to".

I think her voice is like a cross between Bonnie Raitt and Melissa
Etheridge -- now if she's got a face and body to match, we're talking
    *major* fantasy here.

    Hi Joe...

FWIW...I wouldn't mind looking like her! I caught the
video on MTV a couple of times. She reminds me alot
of the lead singer for Saraya. (That's who I thought
    	originally did the song, too)

She's got jet black hair and incredible blue eyes.

Thats Alannah Myles and she's from Toronto. Various songs
from her solo debut have been rocking Canada's radio stations
	for some time now.

I was sorta wondering if she'd make it to the other side of
the border. Looks like she has..good luck!

I bought the CD a few months back, its not heavy metal, but
great RnB. There's at least three or four hits on the album
and all the songs are quite listenable.

	Buy it, you'll like it.
