171.0. "Moore, Vinnie" by YODA::COOK (Seventh Son of a Seventh Son) Tue Aug 02 1988 11:46

I heard some stuff by this guy last night, and I was amazed.

One of the LP's I heard had Tony MacAlpine on Keyboards.

I like this guy better than Yngwie or Tony put together, he
seems to put a more classical emphasis on his music than Yngwie
    	does now or Tony does.

Let's hear it for Vinnie Moore. A truly incredible guitarist.

The same LP has Tommie Aldridge on drums.

    Right,

The LP you talk about is "Mind's Eye" and it's one of the
best guitar-solo album I've ever heard. Drummer is also
well-known but can't remember his name. (may be Tommy Aldridge??)

    Vinnie got the feeling...

I've never heard Joe Satriani and I'd like to know
if it can be compared to Vinnie witch I like a lot.

Joe Satriani has been playing some gigs over here, but I've only
    just found out so I'm ticket-less. :-(

    Re: -1

This is not a flame, but Vinnie does NOT compare to Joe S.

Vinnie comes from the `I imitate Yngwie' school of guitar playing
(which is both an insult and a compliment). Ie - Lots of minor
arpeggios, harmonic minor runs, ostinato sextuplet figures, common
tone runs, you know, the signature Yngwie-ripped-off-from-Bach licks.

Joe satriani...well, buy his first lp, Not of This Earth, and compare
it to Vinnie's first lp, Mind's Eye....you'll quickly see who the
better guitarist is. Although, if that isn't apparent, then you'll
notice Vinnie sounds more like Yngwie/DiMeola and Joe sounds like
Vai/Holdsworth. Not really worth comparing, I jsut think Joe's
playing is so much more *thoughtful*.

I mean, Vinnie is a cool player and all, but he should get his own
identity. Even his second album has almost the same title as Yngwie's
    latest album (Odyssey).

Yo Buck, who's the guy who discovers all these guitarists. I heard
his name the other day but I forget. I think he has something to
do with the label that MacAlpine/Moore are on: 'Roadrunner Records'

    -Tony
171.9MARKER::BUCKLEYTally-hoTue Aug 02 1988 12:439

The guy who discovered Vinnie Moore, Malmsteen, MacAlpine, Gilbert,
Trafolla, etc etc was Mike Varney. He runs Shrapnel records. That
may also be a factor why they all sound alike.

MacAlpine has graduated from the Sharpnel label (independent) to
a major label (Mercury I believe).

Joe Satriani is not a discovery of Mike Varney, fyi.
171.11My *.02 centsMARKER::BUCKLEYTally-hoTue Aug 02 1988 14:4342

    Well, IMO:

Vinnie gets the best rhythm section to play his tunes...Aldridge-drums,
    andy west-bass, macalpine-keyboards.

Joe plays all the instruments himself (sometimes a real drummer,
but...): keys, bass, guits, drum machines.

I think Joe (minus the monster players) set up better grooves for his
tunes then Vinnie did. In joe's compositions, its not just the lead
guitar, but all the instruments working in context towards a group
sound, and a solid groove. Listen to Always... off of Surfing or
Hordes of Locusts or The Enigmatic off of Not of...the lead guitar is
rather subtle, but the band is producing this groove of death.

On the other hand, Vinnie takes the opposite route. His rhythm
section plays basic, stright ahead rhythms so his melodies and
solos can be faster. Listen to Daydream...all the rhythm section
is doing is chunking on an eigth note rhythm, and Vinnie is all
over the top of it. Its wild lead guitar, but as far as a composition
goes its rather basic and undeveloped in my book. Same goes for
    The follow-up tune...Saved by a Miracle: A super-speedy classical
solos starts it off, then the rhythm section comes in with this
repeating 4 bar figure (and repeats and repeats), the tune never
develops harmonically or into any real form, other than A-B-A-B,
but Vinnie is right there blowing massive chops over it all.

My point is this: I don't really care who is playing on whos album,
if it doesn't groove, its nowhere. I think Vinnie's second album
is a bit more mature than Mind's Eye, which I feel is a pretty weak
album compositionally. I think he has great chops, but his playing
comes acroos cold and calculated in my opinion. Kind like the first
rising force album...a hot lead guitar playing over a bunch of changes
that don't mean anything. I just think Joe Satriani takes a broader
look into composing and writes for the band sound as opposed to
a lead guitar thing. Although, his `hits' (satch boogie, surfing)
aren't good exaples of this, the other material hidden on his albums
    are.

Bottom line: Sensitivity over chops in composition.
171.12Uneducated meanderings...SAMURI::COOPERI got the tone, He's got the bone !Wed Aug 03 1988 02:1015
Well, I'm like Buck... I don't care who it is... If it doesn't rock, it's
junk....

Anyhow my $.02 worth about Joe and all the rest...

Satriani is awesome. He's an incredible git player... Only trouble that
he has IMO, is that it gets old cuz he hasn't got any vocals. To me it
sounds like Mr. Scary doing his warm up jams before practice... Like I
said, Joe is hot, but boring after a while. I don't mean to sound like
I can't listen to a good guitarist or anything, but if I wanna hear a jam,
I go to practice and check out Mr. Scary personally, or 2EZ writing a new
tune...

Dammit! I had just entered a fairly long reply to this topic and typed
    CONT/Y somehow. I had notes in a subprocess so I couldn't continue.
It's all gone now. That really P*sses me off!

I'm not qualified to rate Vinnie Moore, as I've never heard any of his
albums. I would like to make a comment on Joe Satriani and some of the
others. Bear in mind this does not necessarily apply to VM.

I personally don't tire of listening to Satrianis music (like JC). I
believe that it's because he does put a lot of thought and effort into
writing the songs BEFORE recording them. Seems like so many solos are
just some player going into the studio cold and blasting out something.
Well, I don't care how good the chops are, if there's no thought and
inspiration behind it, it's not going to be interesting for very long!

I read more and more interviews with players that talk about going to
the studio, letting the tapes roll, and play. Yng even went so far as
to say that he NEVER writes anything beforehand, just goes lets the
tapes roll and jams. No wonder his recent stuff sounds stale.

For those of you who like Moore/Yngwie/MacAlpine,
                check out Project: Driver.

Hmmm . . . I just ran downstairs to get the
exact lineup of the band, but my tape seems to be
missing. Uh, oh. Anyway, it features (As best
as I can recall), MacAlpine, some guy (Rob Rock?)
on vocals, Aldridge on drums (?) and (damn!) who
                was on bass . . . I forget. I get all these
                Moore/MacAlpine/Driver stuff mixed up. They
ought to get everyone together and make one band
since they are always switching around anyway.
Steve Smith, George Lynch, Billy Sheehan, Jeff
Watson, Brad Gillis, Tommy Aldridge and quite a
few others I've forgotten all played on albums
with MacAlpine and Moore. What the hell, let's
throw in Dave Chastain and Paul Gilbert for some
more guitar stuff (Yngwie is too stuck up to play
with any other great guitarists, that's what I
love about MacAlpine. He invites his influences
                to come play with him).

    Aldridge - drums
    Rock - vocals
    Sarzo - bass

Is this the same Bob Rock who was in the Payolas, and is now in Rock and
Hyde (remember their hit 'Dirty Water'? - no, not the Standells song!)?
Just wondering, because I wouldn't think that these styles mix too
well.

By the way, in addition to being in Rock and Hyde, Bob Rock is one of the
hottest producers/engineers around now. He co-produced Bon Jovi's "Slippery
When Wet", and also worked on the new Aerosmith album!

I saw the Michael Angelo (like that's his real
name) "How to Play Guitar" video tape. It was a
riot. He starts out with a nice simple major
scale and by the end of the tape, he's got a
double neck guitar, and he's doing harmonies with
5-finger taps on each neck with 1/64th notes.
Sure . . . If anybody wants to learn to play
guitar, don't learn from this tape. It was more
like a "watch me show off for a while" tape. But
there's no arguing, the guy is *SICK*

171.23Time OdysseyNAVIER::STARRMy glance turns to a stare...Fri Jun 01 1990 17:3715
Someone loaned me Vinnie Moore's "Time Odyssey" tape, and I listened to it on
the way in. Overall (as usual with these guys), while I was impressed by his
chops, his compositional talent is nearly nil. Just lotsa runs and scales over
fairly boring background music. Sometimes I would hear a nice little thing,
but overall its mostly boring.

One exception - he does do a half-decent job on an instrumental version of
"While My Guitar Gently Weeps". While he still insists on throwing in too
many lead runs where they don't belong, there was some nice mimicking of the
vocal lines and harmonies.

I still have another side to listen to, if I get the ambition. I doubt it
though - I've heard it all before....

> Instead of cutting apart a clearly superior guitarist, just admit you don't
> like the particular guitar style.

But Pete, if you looked at, for example, my last entry in the Yngwie note,
from last month, you'll see that that is not always true. I gave the live
Yngwie album a favorable review. Its not their style that bothers me but what
they do with it. If its done within the context of a good song, of if the
guitar playing itself provides a good melody line or structure, then that's
fine. Its just the ego-trip, speed-for-speed's-sake that bothers me.....

I also entered this note because someone who may have ignored Vinnie
(because of his style) may be interested in hearing "While My Guitar Gently
Weeps", which hadn't even been mentioned in this topic previously.

HOT news: After a recent decision by Vinnie to release (yet another)
all instrumental album, Ibanez Guitars decided to yank Vinnie's guitar
endorsement!! Ibanez wants their instruments being played by people in
the limelight of R&R, and feel that Vinnie's decision to release
another solo/instrumental lp will further push him into musical
obscurity. They were hoping for a vocal/band-oriented album in the
vein of Greg Howe's 2nd and Tony MacAlpine's 3rd album release!

Thats too bad they yanked it, but I'm glad he stuck with the
instrumental. TMacA's first two albums were great! The last one
wasn't anywhere near as good. I'm glad VM is sticking to his guns,
even though it may cost him.

he is a great guitarist, there is no doubt about that.
I used to live in deleware, so I got to talk with him
quite a few times.he is also from deleware.
I attended a seminar he held sponsered by IBANEZ.
he said maybe in the future he might form something
with a vocalist. he wasnt sure.BUT!!! that was three
years ago.he seems pretty cool when you talk with him.
and the reason why his music is so clasical is because
thats all he listens to at home and in his car.
I hear he is not with ibanez any more. hope to hear
    something from him soon.

I heard a song from Vinnie this weekend.. It was called
Meltdown (I believe). I though it sounded pretty cool.
Meltdown is also the name of the album so does that mean
that this is a new album? Either way I thought it was
pretty cool. Might be one to get, I like listening to
instrumental releases (except Via's Little Green men tape
	I don't care for that one, but P&W rules.) I don't hear
very many instrumentals, they never play them on the radio.
So when I do finally hear one I usually like it..

Yeah, new album from Vinnie. He just played at the Channel last week
(I had to work :'( :'(). I don't know how radio stations choose their
instrumentals because much of Vinies and Tony MacAlpines stuff I though
was far superior to Satch Boogie which used to get all sorts of
airplay. Then you hear Edgar Winter's Frankenstein all the time now
also (now THAT'S a great tune).
