921.0. "Grunge - is it here to stay ?" by NEWOA::DALLISON () Thu Feb 04 1993 14:19

Rock music today is changing. Over the years it seems to have gone through
many trends and fashions and has now, in the last 12 months, swong again
towards a hybrid of thrash and indie.

Thinking about it I guess bands like Faith No More were one of the
first to bring to it the commercial world but other obscure band have
    been doing it for yours.

Even Bon Jovi have changed their style to a much more indie orientated
groove (using the singer from Jesus Jones to produce a dance version of
    'Keep the Faith').

A couple years ago everyone was screaming for more pop metal bands
like the Warrants, Poisons, Wingers and Bon Jovis of the world but now
its all this offbeat heavy riffamania with Alice in Chains, Ministry,
Ugly Kid Joe, and the like.

So, whats everyone in notesville think ? What bands other than FNM
    pioneered this stuff ?

    -Tony

p.s. Not slagging this stuff off BTW, I like FNM and AiC. Just thought
         might make an interesting topic.

Sister_t and I were just talking about this last nite. She thinks
grunge is ALREADY on its way out. I think it still has a good
18 months of longevity left in the genre.

I think a lot of these bands have a cool image, cool band names and
cool song titles, but at the end of the day,the songs just ain`t there.
It just doesn`t bite somehow (for me anyway).

It's here to stay, but just won't be as popular. I mean, Pop metal has
faded but bands still get records out. Just aren't seelin' millions.

I think someone in the industry finally noticed that yer good old
sloppy ROCK AND ROLL band has an audience out there. That's what I
consider most of what people call "grunge" to be. It's rock with an
    edge to the music.

The funny thing to me is that bands that have a cool groove and some
intensity have *always* interested me, and I think they do to a lot of
other people too. They just weren't generally available through the
    major labels until recently.

The bottom line is putting out music that people enjoy, and people are
tired of the same old sound. The 80s are over and bands that did well
then probably won't fly too hot now. The same thing will happen with
"grunge", the record companies will hire a buncha clone bands to
capitolize on the trend and people will get tired of hearing the same
sound all the time. Then something else will come along and take over.

921.21Aren't you sick of the little chin beards yet?BINKLY::MINARDITue Apr 20 1993 22:1933
This was a great idea for a note... wtf happened?

Grunge is dead. It's more a fashion thing than a music
thing. I mean, it influenced Beverly Hills 90210, and
every other Fox show. I think the time I knew I hated
grunge was when I was retching through some Fox show,
the Heights maybe? And this guy had a gig as a gigolo
model-dude for some older, horny middle-aged photog,
and he couldn't relax. So, sensing that he was a rough-hewn
'man from the streets,' she demonstrated how hip she was
by helping him to chill, by swapping out his tux for a
baggy t-shirt, and asking him if he wanted some, quote
"Seattle Sound" music. And he said, amazedly, and probably
knowing he was gonna be playin tag-under-the-sheets with
her shortly thereafter, "sure! how did you know?"

Now you can't even buy ratty polyester clothing at the Salvation
Army, because all grungoids have watched MTV's House of Cindy
and saw the bit on how to buy the GRUNGE LOOK at second hand
stores. I shoulda kept all my clothes from high school, I'd
be freaking rich. I guess it's cool that bums are high fashion
    now, at least.

Bottom line? "GRUNGE" sucks. It isn't music. It's fashion.
It's gonna die as fast as it took off, and, unfortunately, some of
the good bands associated with it are gonna crash and burn
along with it. If it ain't cool, it's dead. And if Brandon
Walsh is wearing GRUNGE clothes, it ain't cool.

Mudhoney says it best in Overblown.

    I reckon it`s just a reaction.

It`s like in the early 70`s you had long hair/hippy dippy type crap,
then you had punk in the mid(ish) to late 70`s which was all,er,wild
and outrageous, then people got bored of that, and you got the smartly
dressed,i`ve got loads of money type conformist boredom of the 80`s,
and now it`s gone back to a cross between the long hair/hippy dippy
i want to save the planet crap and the i`m a sort of outrageous punk
type thing. Why people just can`t be themselves,i`ll never know.

    Hope this makes sense.

921.30Who the hell came up with the label "GRUNGE"?LUNER::BIRDTue Sep 03 1996 17:0621

First of all this labeling of music really s*cks. The image that
seems to go along with the "Grunge" stereotype is a little distorted.
Hell, I was wearing flannel shirts and combat boots before I even heard
a Seattle based band. Anyway, "grunge" is just plain old rock and roll.
No matter how you look at it. I'm a musician and I have noticed alot of
similar song structures and beats. The things I have noticed that are
different are the singers. Grunge singers tend to have more of a range
then the singers way back, also the drummers tend to add flair to thier
stylish drum beats. I have also noticed that these "grunge" bands are
evolving with the times. I personally think that Grunge is a feeling,
not a look or sound, but a feeling. It is the feelings we have as a
teenager or young adult trying to cope with the new problems we all
have as we grow up. I think that this definition can also be put on
rock and roll. For this reason I think that the label "Grunge" will die
but the feeling will always be there.
