1081.0. "Rock was best in 67-77?" by QCAV01::RONALD () Tue Jun 13 1995 09:00

If you listen to today's rock, very hard to distinguish
one group from another.... there is too much of over drive
and sinthetic sound and no talent... the best of rock came
in the late 60's ant thro the 70's.. anyone with me?

... there was good music only then..

No you can't really say that as music critique is purely subjective.
Although there are exceptions people will usually claim a certain
period was the best because they grew up at that time. Personally that
period (extend it up until '84) is my favourite. There just seemed to
be a lot more apparent creativity especially with British bands i.e.
The Who, The Stones, Floyd, Genesis, Led Zep, Yes, Humble Pie, Free,
Sabbath, ELP, Thin Lizzy (Irish/US/Scots I know) Sabbaff, UFO, Alex
Harvey to name but a few.

Although there were a few bad production jobs on some of these artists'
offerrings I must admit to preferring analogue over digital recordings
any day. The sound is so much warmer and bassy.

re .0

You can't really make a statement like that, IMO. The problem these days is
that record companies will give a contract to any old crap. In the 60s and
70s, far fewer bands made it into the "bigtime", whereas these days, there seem
to be thousands. I must confess to being disillusioned by a lot of the current
music (mainly the US stuff, but maybe that's just my tastes changing). There
are too many Bon Jovis, too many Napalm Deaths, too many Metallicas etc.

The sort of band I'm into at the moment is the type that take the 60s and 70s
stuff, and bring it up to date. Examples, would be (most notably) the
WiLDHEARTS, umm....Supergrass, Suede, blah blah. Few bands do anything new,
these days, so I just go for the ones who are open about their influences, and
who mix everything together in the most original way. Trent Reznor and his
peers deserve a pat on the back for trying something different, but the rest of
it has been done before. I dislike Green Day with a passion usually reserved
for the Spin Doctors. I've always been a "Manic Street Preachers" fan, and
Green Day appear to be the poor man's alternative. Maybe they just notice that
the Manics were pretty good, but knew that the Americans would never buy a
British band's CD in any numbers, so they had a go themselves. Bands like Bush
seem to be copying stuff that appeared just a couple of years ago ("grunge"),
and no-one wants to go forward.

1081.11THIS WAS MY FAVOURITE ERA...KDCA01::CDCUP_TORRENTue Jun 13 1995 14:3027
For me, I thought the best period (for metal/hard rock) was
the late 70's early 80's. These bands paved the way for Metal being
    acceptable/ playable on the radio.

    Motley Crue
    Ratt
    Quiet Riot
    Ozzy
    Judas Priest
    Iron Maiden
    Scorpions
    Kiss
    AeroSmith
    Twisted Sister
    Van Halen

These guys revolutionized Hard Rock, they made it all possible for
todays bands. Of course the earlier bands had impacts on these guys
as well, but I felt this was one of the best era's, and also one
of the biggest break through's. (Mind you I'm still young)

I also think the whole scene, got over exploided, were there were
alot of one hit wonders who did squat after that. And there were
tons of LA Glam bands, and now were going through the same situation
with the Seattle scene. Something else will come along.

Pick any era, and there's gems and a whole lot of shiite. What
you get fed on the radio tends to be the shiite because, IMO,
since there's never a shortage of stupid people, the music
demographics get formed around them. Classic rock programming
is a _classic_ example (oh, I really _need_ to hear Stairway
    to Heaven again!)

Even today, there's some gems. There's totally fabulous music
out there, for those willing to look for it. And there's also
a lot of shiite, to account for the thunderously stupid segment
of generation X (every generation has them... and Seattle is
pretty much the answer for the current flock.)

The bottom line is, if your musical tastes are driven by the
radio... well at least you're part of something I guess (see
above)... but if you're willing to get off your lazy arse and
go looking for good music, it's out there... in spades!!

So, like, go effin' look! :-)

1081.13roots in '70 recognition after '80TPLAB::VLASIUSorin Vlasiu - Brussels, BelgiumTue Jun 13 1995 15:4420
I also agree that each time period has its best (and worst) examples in
rock music. Early '70 heavy rock bands (Deep Purple, Led Zep, Black
Sabbath, Uriah Heep, to name few) were founders and have later
evoluated to a broader range, Black Sabbath being quite a purist of
future heavy metal. Kiss is one of the main promoters of a more
accessible and still purelly heavy rock to become later heavy metal.
But it's in the eighties that, in my opinion, current heavy metal has
taken off. Thrash is purely eighties style, for example.
Bands like Queensryche, Metallica, Slayer (to name only few) are among
the best HM bands and they brought something new for their time.
Scorpions comes from the seventies but has reached its top succes in
80ies. Iron Maiden is also a reference for the eighties.
I think that the eighties represent the recognition of heavy metal as
    a well established musical genre.
It's interesting that progressive rock (very appreciated in the late
sixties/early seventies) has been continued in some way in 80/90 by a
progressive metal equivalent. Early roots of heavy rock were also mixed
in some cases to progressive rock.

True, there's the entirely new vibe from the likes of Dream Theater,
and then there's even some of the older denizens of prog rock doing
a more modern thing (which includes metal): e.g. King Crimson and
the Trevor Rabin incarnation of Yes.

    - Rumor has it that Trevor Rabin is out and Howe and Wakeman are back
      in Yes.

    - Deep Purple is about to get a major league resurgence - they hired
      longtime Clapton fan Steve Morse.

    - Dream Theater is about the only "gem" I've discovered in the last
      15 years.

Hey, the "Power" tour was the biggest tour since Kerry Livgren left the
band. And IMHO their best album since then too. They definitely
"resurged" although not to the level they achieved with the radio
    hits like "Dust".

I wouldn't expect Morse to provide them with radio hits. Wouldn't want
    it either.

    > Dave, come on, no way I believe that one.

I sure can't think of any other new band that's come along that I would
compare to them even on a handicap basis. Please tell me that I'm
just forgetting about some other good band - I'd love to hear that
but... darned if I can think of any.

You are. Soulhat, from Austin, Texas. Their second CD, "Good To Be
Gone" has probably become my all-time favorite recording. Their
debut is pretty good, but GTBG is sheer musicianship at its peak.
It rocks, its funky, it boogies, the lyrics are perfect, the production is
impeccable, and the musicians pay attention to detail like I've only
    seen in Steely Dan.

Have you tried the Tragically Hip? They are another piece of
    brilliance.

Now I'm a big 70's fan (King Crimson, Kinks, Moodies, Steely Dan,
Creedence), but there are still about a dozen other bands I've really
grown to love that are new and even sometimes popular. You don't
    like Primus?
