444.0. "Mr. Big" by BUSY::KELLY (The number of the beast... 291-9089) Fri Jan 27 1989 12:37

I'm sure you have heard of a project betwixt Paul Gilbert and
Billy Sheenan (sp?). They call it MR Big...no exaggeration either.

Has anyone heard anything about a release date or anything?

Mr. Big have been playing quite a lot here in the Bay Area. They're
hitting some of the larger clubs, but I haven't heard anything about
putting it all on vinyl. Eric Martin (Bay Area rocker) is fronting the
    band.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This month's Guitar Player features the first in a series of "private
lessons" by Paul Gilbert. The column is entitled "Terrifying Guitar
101". A couple of things are mentioned in the introduction:

    	1.	Paul Gilbert is 22 years old (enough to make you sick);

    	2.	Mr. Big's debut will be released this summer on Atlantic.

    	Hey,

Just heard that the new Mr. Big lp is to be released June 20th on
    Atlantic Records.

Their first lp contains the following tracks:

Addicted to the rush	Take a walk
    Wind me up Big Love
Merceless How can you do what you do
    Had Enuff Anything for you
Blame it on my youth	Rock n roll over

The CD and cassette will contain a bonus track called 30 Days in
    the Hole.

    should be good, eh?

from one of my fave bands, Humble Pie. Good rockin' tune!!!!

For the metal maniac that Paul Gilbert is...he doesn't listen to
that much of it, really. I mean, he's into AC/DC and Dokken and

"Addicted to ...." something, can't remember. But the tune was
GREAT ! Gilbert cooks, Sheehan cooks, they did this one little
hammer-on harmony thing (Shy Boy rip off) that was outstanding.

Are you sure it's not Jeff Martin? In the "Racer X" note, Buck lists
Jeff Martin as the singer they had then. It really sounds like the
    same guy to me.

Listening more to the Mr. Big album, Gilberts playing on some of the
songs reminds me a little of Steve Vai. I think it's great! To me it
sounds more mature then the stuff he did with Racer X, especially on
Street Lethal. It's more musical, sounds more like a song rather then
a picking exercise gone wild (the solos, I always thought the Racer X
songs were among the most musicial of the speedy stuff I've heard).

Man, what an attitude! Sounds like he's just trying to pass the blame
for his own problems. One would think that someone like Gilbert that
teaches (taught?) at one of the more renowned music schools in the

I would have to say that this album isn't intended to showcase anyone's

When musicians make an album do they ALWAYS have to "showcase"

O:MC was pretty good, but what I mainly didn't like about it was the
mix. Often, I found the guitar sounds too buzzy and irritating, and
the drum sound didn;t have that snap it did on RFO, and the reverb
sound sounded too dark and muddy to me. If O:MC was produced and mixed

This is the Mr. Big note, we can discuss the relative merits of
Queensryche in their note. And FWIW, yes, I do consider Empire to be
    predominantly commercial sounding.

I simply said it'll be a shame when Mr. Big goes to slam the commercial
success they're seeing home with an even more commercial followup.
They'll have to do it to survive. They're a great band, and I'm sure
that some of their sound will shine through (just as QR's did), but
it's not the direction *I'D* personally like to hear from them.

was a mega freak out when they played "Shy boy" and everybody seemed to
enjoy it immensely. The support were the Throbs and they were utterly

Last time they played I won tickets (from radio 210) to see them, but
I only go the chance to hang round with the Throbs all day (bunch of
losers!), in stead of MR BIG. I also went to there after gig party at
a pub over the road.......met all the guys in the band (paul gilbert,
pat torpy, etc). It was a good night out!

the last track, I said oh yeah, this ones on the radio...That song
turned me off from the band but seeing that it was in the CD player, I
skimmed throug each song....All I can say is...Not bad...I'm gonna
listen to the whole CD this weekend.....I still don't care for track 11

I went to see Mr. BIG again last night, and i have to say even though
there not the most exciting rock band in the world, live they do add
some colour and difference (ie. adding an R&B tint in the vocals,
mixing fast riffing with blues songs, etc) There a refreshing change
with some "nice" songs. All in all they sounded good and looked good,
and have really inproved in the live situation.
Just to add Billy had the biggest bass rack i've ever seen!!
outragous!! and paul gilbert uses the new ampeg amp's with the logo
    that lights up!

Mr. Big played for free at Govt. Center last night with Stacy Earl,
M.C. Brains, Melisa Morgan, the College Boyz, and Arrested Development.
No big (pardon the pun) deal if you missed it though considering there
were arrests and injuries. Also reports of looting and gunshots.

Apparently a bunch of people pushed through the media area and
refused to leave. The show was the canceled and the problems began.

Oh YEAH, I've been meaning to put someting in here for awhile. I heard
a new Mr. Big song on the radio a couple of weeks ago. It would appear
that Paul and Billy have returned to displaying their chops on this new
effort, in a similar fashion to the way they did on the first album.
The song was smokin from an instrumental standpoint. It's a fast
    number anyway.

The down side for me was the lyrics, which were pretty lame. (Something
about a woman that was sexually agressive and stole the authors heart
    away...gimme a break...)

New album's either out now or very soon.

The song I heard had "Colorado" and the name of an animal (I *think*)
in the title... "Colorado Wildcat", "Colorado Buffalo", "Colorado

Really a driving tune, I might be able to get past the lyrics enough to
    enjoy it...

Its heavier than their last effort but has more variety (does that
