174.0. "Thin Lizzy" by LAVA::LALLI () Wed Aug 03 1988 06:42

What do you all think about THIN LIZZY.

Hope you classify it as HM... cuz I do.

Thin Lizzy was and Irish band driven by an Irish man : Phil Lynott
He died from Pneumonia January 5th of 1985 (I think).

Think how many great musicians (guitarists) got famous after a
while with Thin Lizzy and Magic Phil Lynott who was playing
    bass and vocals.

    		Gary Moore
    		Brian Robertson
    		John Sykes
    		Scott Gorgham

Their record list is long. Here are the one I do remember :

    		Johnny The Fox
    		NightLife
    		Black Rose
    		JailBreak
    		Live & Dangerous
    		Renegade
    		Thunder & Lightnings
    		Live / Life
The History of ... (The old Irish style things)
    		Lizzy Killer (a best of)
		...

Also great Phil Lynott solos and really good tunes with Gary Moore

    		Military Man
    		Out in The fields

both on Gary Moore ? album (cover is brown)

I though Phil Lynott died from drugs ???

"Run for cover" is the name of the Moore album.

I thought he died from a HEROINE overdose? I heard he was
     quite fond of smack.

174.3I heard...MOTLEY::MINARDIWed Aug 03 1988 12:289
I am pretty sure that he died from over-indulgence with alcohol
    and drugs.
Good band, I've got Live and Dangerous (I think that's what
it's called), and it's good. HAven't listened for a while though.
Gary Moore is awesome. He's got a couple good releases on his
    own I think.

174.4He's dead anyway...LAVA::LALLIWed Aug 03 1988 13:4115

I've read his death from a stupid newspaper, so probably
they said wrong. Your version is more credible but too
    bad anyway.

You should get Live/Life that is their latest album. At the
end of it on "Rocker" all the 5 guitarists listed in 174
    come and play together....great !

That was Thin Lizzy last concert, that's why. Right after
Phil found Grand Slam. Did somebody ever heard of it ?

grand slam never got a record deal, which was a crime. They were really
    Lizzy re-incarnated.
Brian Robertson formed Wild Horses with Jimmy Bain after leaving
lizzy, and they were a good band, they also featured Neil carter(now
with gary moore). The band did not come across on record, but live
they really cooked(as long as robbo and Jimmy could stay standing
up).I saw this band many times and live they never disapointed.
Robbo went on to join Motorhead.Although this did not last long.
I believe phil died of pneumonia brought on by drugs and drink, this
was a great waste, when he played live he gave 100%.Lizzy were one
of my favourite bands, the only time they went mediocre was the short
period that snowy white played with them.when he was on stage the
rest of the band had to double their work rate to keep the songs
    moving.

    steve.

Thin Lizzy is one of my all time favorite bands. Smith_S is
absolutely correct. Grand Slam should have received a record deal.

Phil Lynott died from heavy drinking and heavy drugs from pneumonia
most likely. His marriage and band crumbled because of it. He was
one gifted and incredible writer, performer and musician.

He played with some of the greatest musicians. Brian Downey
is one incredible drummer as well as Gary Moore one of the finest
guitarist. Also Robbo, Scott Gorham, Eric Bell, Scott Gorham, John
Sykes and Snowy White. Snowy White being the only disappointement.
Gary dedicated his latest album Wild Frontier to Phil most of the
    songs are about Phil.

                Their were numerous compilations
                         1973-1974
                   (Lynott,Moore and Downey)
Moore filled in till Lynott could find a replacement. A couple
of songs were recorded and were released on the compilations.

                         1974-1977

2 of those songs ended up on Gary Moore's Run for Cover

Some of the years may be slightly off but off the top of
    my head they seem correct.

I hope someday their albums will be released on CD.
presently only 3 are available and all are compilations.

About Lizzy on CD, I was wandering why they didn't came out
with some LPs on CD. The only one I know is "Lizzy Killer"
witch can't give me enough. What are the 2 others ?

I never really listen to Thin Lizzy until I
read this note file, so i went out last night
and the only one i found at strawberries was
live and dangerous, I am intrested in buying
another album from them but would like to know
who has a good selection of them and if anyone could
    recomend an outstanding album, thanks

174.7, The 3 Cd's by Thin Lizzy that are available are 1)Lizzy
Killers, 2)The Collection (It contains 17 songs from the
first lineup of (Lynott, Bell and Downey) except one song
called Sitamoaia which has Gary Moore. It runs around 73
minutes. 3)The best of Phil Lynott and thin Lizzy. This is
76 minutes long and contains all the tracks from Lizzy Killers
except Wild One and a live version of Boys are Back in Town
instead of studio version. It also contains a couple of
Phils solo songs King's Call is one plus Pariseinne Walkways
with Gary Moore. It has 17 songs also I think. I found it
in the used record bin at BCD. I haven't seen it anywhere
            else.

174.8 Tony, The albums I recommend are::

If you enjoyed Live and Dangerous then you should
buy Jailbreak and Johnny the Fox. They are very much in the same
vein. Jailbreak should be easy to find. Jailbreak is a classic.
Also Bad Reputation is pretty much in the same vein.

If you want the more modern metal sound then Thunder
and Lightning is for you. It features great guitar harmonies as well
    as metal guitarist John Sykes.

Black Rose is another great album and this one features
Irish guitarist Gary Moore and more great guitar harmonies.

Fighting is a real underrated album it has numerous
different styles of songs. It's one of my favorites.

yea. One of the greatest bands...especially live.I saw Grand Slam
ok in Ireland but for some reason nobody really took too them ie
crowds at gigs were very small.
Phil Lynott was undoubtably a genius performer..and not just
with lizzy. I saw him at a Festival in Ireland when he made a guest
appearance with Rory Gallagher and Paul Brady (underated Irish
musician). He was also very generous to up and comming Irish rock
bands with both finance and general help.
Another musician who played for a while (live tours only) with
Lizzy was Midge Ure...which is a bit surprising to many people.
Also here is a wayout bit of Lizzy info!!!! but WELL worth checking
out if you are ever in County Cork,Ireland. Eric Bell (1st guitarist)
still plays in one of the Pubs in the town of CLONIKILTY.and with
him on bass guitar is the former bass player with Jimi Hendrix. They
call themselves the Clonikilty Cowboys .They don't advertise so
you more or less have to ask around the town'...Excelent band/jamming
    sessions though.
Also does anybody know where or what Scot Gorham is doing
now??. Last time I was home I heard Brian Downey had 'retired' but
still used to guest appear with local Dublin bands.
     regards

I also recommend "Jailbreak" which is my favorite one.
If you want to here thin Lizzy latest sound, you
can try "Thunder & Lightnings" but also "Renegade"
that is a very good HM album IMO.

The 'Fighting' album is also very good..and the 'Black Rose'...with
Gary Moore. There is also a good video of the "Live and Dangerous"
Tour going around but I suspect its hard to get ?????. I know you
can get it back home in Dublin (Ireland) ok.
Also has any body heard/seen the Mama's Boys...the supported the
last Lizzy tour. They are an Irish 3 member band who went to the
USA a while back....no ones heard them since..

I'd just like to throw my two cents worth in and say that
Thin Lizzy was a fantastic band! I don't know the life
history of the band or any statistics about who or what did
when but then again I never pay to much attention to that
kind of stuff. I just like the feeling that some bands
give you when you hear their stuff and Thin Lizzy definetely
gave me that feeling......you know.....blood pumping......
    	head bangin'.......feelin' good kinda music!

174.15I saw the last ConcertSKIVT::BRENNATue Aug 30 1988 13:1418
I saw Lizzy's last concert. It was the last concert on the 1983
Monsters of Rock Tour. They played at the Zeppelin Field in Nuremburg,
Germany. They were something like the third band to play. They opened
up with "Jailbreak" and had "The Boy's are Back in Town" as the
    encore.
Twisted Sister opened, With Motorhead, Lizzy, Blue Oyster Cult,
Ozzy, Meatloaf,Saxon and Whitesnake was the headliner.
Phil didn't look that bad as I recall and I wasn't more that
20 to 30 feet from the stage. The band sounded pretty good and I
enjoyed the show. It wasn't until sometime later that I found out
it was their last concert. It's too bad, They were truly a great
    Band.

I just remember one album though...

There are 2 Thin Lizzy video's..

1)Live and Dangerous... It runs about an hour long and features
the lineup of Phil Lynott, Brian Downey, Scott Gorham and Brian
    Robertson... It is excellent....

            2)Thin Lizzy w/Gary Moore....It is a Japanese release and
runs about 35 minutes. It has the lineup of Phil Lynott, Scott Gorham,
Gary Moore and Mark Nauseef. Brian Downey was sick during that faze
of the tour and Gary had just joined taking Brian Robertsons place.
    It is also excellent...

Heres a strange line-up for THIN LIZZY. It happened actually 6 months
after Phil Lynott had passed away. An all day open air concert was
held in Dublin city,Ireland featuring mostly Irish bands..U2 ,Rory
Gallagher etc etc.. At the very end after U2 had played, A special
tribute was announced for Phil lynott..It featured Garry Moore,Brian
    Downey,Scot gorham,Darren Warthon.............and on Vocals Bob
Geldof....They played a few lizzy numbers and it was only amazing!

174.21Phil - The early yearsFOOT::HOBBSWed Feb 22 1989 10:1321
Just a note on Thin Lizzy's more distant past ('71), my wife who is Irish
used to go and see Phil Lynott and Co when they were called "Silver".
At this time they were the local band in the Carlow-Wicklow area.
She used to travel all over Ireland to watch them. Phil and the
band were a great bunch and would often give her and her girlfriend
a lift home after the gig. Incidentily, my wife's name is Elizabeth,
she is five foot two and weighed 6 1/2 stone. WHo knows. Phil she
remembers was a gentleman and a great person as were all the band.

On a sadder note, I remember when he died, it was announced that
the cause of death was speticemia? (blood poisoning) brought on
by ulcers created from intraveounus injections. What a waste of
one of the most gifted musos of our time. He is sorely missed by
many, including snowey (ref prev note), who appeared on a show
called 'the late late show' (with Gay Burne?) and had nothing but
    praise for Phil.

I have one of TL compilation CD (with the live set in the middle).
What a shame I never got to see them live, and now never will.

I recently picked up Thin Lizzy "Live and Dangerous" on cd. There
is a song called "Baby Drives Me Crazy" on it. Its got some really
nice harmonica jams on it. At the end of the song Phil Lynott intro-
duces Huey Lewis. Intresting, its amazing what you pick up when
you don't listen to an album for about 8 years!

Thin Lizzy is probably my favorite band of all time. I have got almost
everything they ever released. My favorite song has got to be Still in
love with you. I am missing a few B-sides that they released and was
wondering if any of you out there might have them. One is the B-side
to Do anything you want to(?). Another is a record from a magazine
called Flexi-pop and the song is called Song for Jimmy. There are a
couple others but I will have to look them up. If you have any of
    these let me know.

From what I have heard... the vocal track to dedication, was done
some months before the death of Phil Lynott, and layed aside outta
respect for the guy, and then forgotten about. When the vocal track
was found, Brian Robertson and someone else (either Brian Downey
or Scott Gorham) put down guitar tracks etc. and the song was released
as the title track to the Dedication album.

I've also heard/read that Brian Robertson and Brian Downey are
currently touring Ireland under the banner of "An Evening Of
Thin Lizzy". Apparently they're "outfit" also contains a member
of Phil's swansong band "Grand Slam and A.N.OTHER.

A review of one of the gigs recently indicated that they are going
a long way in wiping out any fond memories that folks had of Lizzy,
forgetting lyrics to songs like "Are You Ready", and playing up
    on the has-been egos etc..etc..

I can understand "Robbo's" part in all of this (alchi that he has
become), but not Downey, who I thought would resist the temptation
of laying waste to the legend that was Lizzy.

I have heard that story also... but I heard that the original guitarist
was touring with Downey! I would have thought that after a statement
like ~I will never tour again~ or something of that ilk, that Downey
    must be short of money....

I saw Robertson touring with `Wild Horses' a number of years ago
and at that time Robertson was already an a$$h*le.

And I don't rate the production/engineering side of "Jailbreak"

Pretty sure you're right Staynz... I break out Black Rose every once in a
while. That's the one with Toughest Street in town right?

I believe the album after BRaRL was Chinatown with Snowy White. The album
before BRaRL was Bad Reputation (or the live one really which was from the
Johnny the Fox and Bad Repuation tour) both of which had Brian Robertson.

I get sad every time I think about Phil Lynnot being dead. What a waste...
