73.0. "Spinal Tap Revisited" by MILVAX::FORD () Thu May 26 1988 17:51

If your ever in the video store just browsing for a movie to few,
let me suggest the ultimate heavy_metal satire called "Spinal Tap".
This movie has been out for awhile - since 79 or so, but it is a
really excellent satire on the highs and lows of a mock heavy-metal
band known as Spinal Tap. It takes you on the road with the band
and shows some pretty funny stage "mishaps". This band actually
was formed and did a brief tour to boost the movie. The rythym
guitarist in the band is best known as Lenny from the Laverne and
Shirley show, but he's not bad on guitar. There are some real wild
lyrics to some of their tunes -- check out "Big Bottom" -- wicked
    funny!!

Yeah, I've seen it a couple of times..... like about 15. I almost have it
memorized. Every time I watch it, I laugh just as much as before.

The last few times I picked up some jokes I never noticed previously.

You can even buy the "Black Album". I know Newbury Comics in and around
Boston sells it.

Even thinking about it now cracks me up.

    I HIGHLY recommend it!!!

Here's another BIG third on this flick. It's a riot. But I think
it came out in about 83 or 84, because I saw it when it first came
    out.

The actors in the film wrote the story and the songs and performed
all the songs. They filmed one of the club sequences at a HM club
in LA and (the way I hear it) didn't tell anyone they weren't 'for
real' and were accepted like any of the other bands.

The dead drummer gags were great! I just cringed when Nigel throws
down that nice Strat (please place Strat put-downs in the 'Fender
    Love/Hate note).

My favorite lines, David is being interviewed just after Nigel leaves:

    .
    .
    .
David: We've lost band members before and we will again.
Interviewer: But, this is Nigel, you guys have been playing together
                  for 15 years...
David: I'd probably feel worse about it, if I weren't so heavily
                  sedated.

Well I saw it on TV and it was brilliant!!!

You know the bit about the stone henge model, well apparently Sting
was doing a gig, performing a song called "Fortress". He didn't
know that the road crew had secretly got hold of a little model
fortress and lowered it onto the stage, as in Spinal Tap.

    Brought the house down!!

    Brilliant movie!

My favorite seen is when they are at Graceland:

When trying to harmonize on "Heartbreak Hotel":
"I think it's in the same key"

      And who could forget:
      "Too much f***ing perspective"

I could go on and on...

Anyone else see Spinal Tap live? I saw them at the Channel right
after the movie came (they really did tour). And how 'bout their
holiday 45 "Christmas With The Devil"?

Don't forget the article in Guitar Player magazine interviewing
Spinal Tap's lead guitarist, Nigel Tufnel. Just as funny as the
movie and had me fooled into wondering why I had never heard of
this heavy metal band that had been around for 15 years. It was
dissappointing to learn that they weren't for real.

    					the Bomb

73.7That article was a riotCSC32::G_HOUSEGreg House - CSC/CSFri May 27 1988 16:4912
It really cracked me up how many letters they printed in GP responding
irately to that article. It was so obviously a joke...I couldn't
believe how many folks took it seriously (and were 'intellectually
offended' enough to write in and complain. They actually got these
letters for several months afterward. The editors responses to
    them was pretty good too.

I mean, look at the author...it was Teisco Del Rey, the guy that
does the 'Off the Wall' column on cheap and strange guitars. Tip
number one. He doesn't do interviews. And look at the photos.

the Hear'n'Aid Stars record, that Ronnie James Dio organised ?
They were abound with many little snippets of jokes throughout
it, my favourite being when David said :

I like the way Yngwie (sp?) J. Malmsteen, puts the J in his
name, just to distinguish between all the other Yngwie Malmsteens

The funniest thing is that they were making fun of rock and roll, and yet
everything they did in the movie is seriously done in rock and roll.

73.15your 2 young and I'm 2 well hungTRAM::JBLUMThu May 10 1990 03:1119
Very true, a lot of the stuff that happened in the movie actually
happened in our beloved world of HM. For instance, the Stonehenge
set was used by Black Sabbath, the song "Big Bottom" has to have been
influenced by Queen's "Fat Bottomed Girls", one riff used in "Sex Farm"
sounds almost exactly like Kiss' "Hotter than Hell". Anybody remember
the controversy surrounding the cover of "Smell the Glove"? Well, the
Scorpions had a similar problem with the cover of "Animal Magnatism".
Oh yeah, it seems that Spinal Tap's former drummer, Stumpy Joe, and
mr. Jimi Hendrix, suffered the same type of horrible (and gross) death.
Also, the honorable Ozzy Osbourne once opened up for a puppet show in
which the puppets actually did have a bigger dressing room.
Over the years, I've been doing research into similarities between
Spinal Tap and real life occurances, if anybody comes up with some more
    please fill me in.

P.S. Just kidding about the Ozzy/Puppet show bit, but you already knew

As I heard it the new film is a spoof on all those bands who were
around in the early seventies and sort of died or petered out at the
end of the decade only to reform in the late eighties (presumably
because the were getting a bit behind on the mortgage repayments).

    "In the Studio"

    SPINAL TAP

"The concept for the new album is sales," says rhythm guitarist David
St. Hubbins of the upcoming Spinal Tap album, tentatively titled *Break
Like the Wind.* Lead guitarist Nigel Tufnel voices a similar
sentiment: "What we're saying with this album is, 'We're back. Come
back with us. Join us, won't you, in a consumer sense'".

Just when you thought it was safe to head back to the record stores,
Spinal Tap has reunited for its first album since 1984's *Smell the
Glove*. Asked why the veteran heavy-metal group has decided to reunite
    - the band's history has been marked by constant personality clashes,
musical differences and, of course, unexplained drummer deaths - the
members seem stumped. Finally, St. Hubbins offers his theory: "Just to
make that joyful music we make, I suppose. Our manager, Ian Faith,
passed away, and we all met at his funeral in hopes of meeting some of
his relatives, because he owed us a great deal of money. But we were
the only ones there, so we started talking."

The band spent the last months of 1991 recording its MCA debut at
various studios in the Los Angeles area. THe choice of location came
at the behest of St. Hubbins, who's been living in Pomona, California.
"It's been wonderful," he says. "I've met so many great producers,
musicians and drinkers here. You walk up to them at the Rainbow and
ask if they'd like to produce a track, and they're so blind drunk, they
say, 'Fine, yea, sure.' Then I get their home phone numbers."

Among those manning the board for the Tap are Dave Jerden, Steve
Lukather, T Bone Burnett and Danny Kortchmar and Niko Bolas. Of the
multiproducer approach, bassist Derek Smalls explains: "We're hedging
our bets. Because maybe one of them might get it right, we figure."

Tufnel describes the sessions thus far as "a bit more relaxed and
mature," although St. Hubbins confides, "There was still some vomiting
in the beginning." The band has mixed feelings about breakthroughs in
recording technology: "There's a lot of things in the studio they
wouldn't let us touch," says St. Hubbins. "Anything that says
'digital', they would say, 'Now you stay away from that.'"

The material for *Break Like the Wind* includes a new version of "Clam
Caravan," the misprinted title track of Tufnel's hard-to-find solo
album. Because of publishing complications, the song will not be
released under its original title, "Calm Caravan." "The damage is
already done," says Tufnel. "It's too late to change it now. But it's
painful because there are still no clams in the song." Also featured
will be new songs like "Bitch School" and "Cash on Delivery," as well
as anthemlike yet tentative title track, which, says Smalls, is about
"the majesty of rock." Smalls, incidentally, has written three songs
for the album. "One of them is very commercial," St. Hubbins says,
"but we're not sure which one."

Finally, the band - which worked with various session drummers - is
still looking for a new semipermanent drummer. "It's rather sad, of
course," says St. Hubbins. "How do you approach this sensitively,
without causing great grief to the families of percussionists of the
    past?"

"It's a curse, really," adds Smalls.

"Yes," says Tufnel. "It's a modern-day curse. How do you break it?
You can't just smack it about the face and say, 'Stupid curse, nitwit
curse, go away!' We tried that, but it didn't listen."

         BREAK LINE THE WIND ***
         Spinal Tap

Crumbling under the weight of a tiny Stonehenge, Spinal Tap
split up in 1984 - leaving "Big Bottom" and "Sex Farm" to the
annals of classic rock. *Break Like the Wind* marks the
band's reunion and, by some bizarre twist of fate, coincides
with heavy metal's resurgence in popularity and sales. Until
recently, guitarist-vocalist Nigel Tufnel had been adrift in
the murky waters of a solo career, making a kind of gumbo of
African music, Polynesian music and even the obscure sounds
of the Pee-Wee Islands off Tasmania. In January, he told
ROLLING STONE, "What we're saying with this album is 'We're
back. Join us, won't you, in a consumer sense.'"

Sure, this is a joke, but Spinal Tap is a joke that everyone
is in on - unlike most metal, which some people think isn't
funny. Tufnel, guitarist-vocalist David St. Hubbins and
bassist Derek Smalls are great parodists, from thier absurd
British pomp and their bulges swathed in crushed velvet to
histrionic guitar solos and the endless exploding-drummer
gag. This album, like its predecessor *Smell the Glove*,
covers the obligatory rock & roll ground: sex, women,
machismo, romantic longing, a Beatles nod. And to make it
modern, Spinal Tap has added an environmental song ("Stinking
Up the Great Outdoors"), the influence of world music ("Clam
Caravan," which St. Hubbins describes as "a brilliant sort of
East Indian sound picture") and an impressive list of guest
producers and artists (from the omnipresent Slash to Cher,
who hasn't sounded better since "Dark Lady").

On "Majesty of Rock," Spinal Tap mocks metal titans (AC/DC,
Black Sabbath, even Zep) and their spiritual children:
"That's the majesty of rock!/The mystery of roll!/The darning
of the sock/The scoring of the goal!/The farmer takes a
wife/The barber takes a pole." Clever criticism disguised as
bathroom humor, *Break Like the Wind* amplifies the absurdity
of pop music in general. After all, Nigel, Derek and David
are fellas who would proudly check into the Beverly Wilshire
         under the alias Richard Head.

It was pretty funny, but too short. They played one new song and
talked to Letterman for about 5 minutes about the new album.

I heard them on KILO not too long ago. They were asked how they decided
to get back together. They said they talked about it at a party after a
    real @$$ died.

My wife was seeing the kids off to school monday, and on Good Morning
America she saw Charlie was interviewing Nigel and Derek in the studio
and David via remote satellite! Anyway, she plugged a tape in for the
2nd half and below is the transcript from that point on.

Droid

(don't forget to read with the accents!)

Charlie: "Yea... did they flock to you, did the Christians flock to you?"

Derek: "Yea, actually, ah, we had a good run intent and we played the
Monsters of Jesus festival a couple of years in a row."

Charlie: "Ah, I see... and I've heard, Nigel, that you've been doing
          some inventing?"

Nigel: "Yea, well *I* said that..."

Derek: "That's where we all heard it."

Nigel: "...You all heard it from me."

Charlie: "So what did you invent?"

Nigel: "Well, I've invented a folding wine glass."

Charlie: "Goooooood!"

Nigel: "For people... If you'd like to go on a picnic, which you probably
have, and you've said 'What should I use?'. A glass! But it will
break if I put it in my pocket, won't it?!"

Charlie: "Good point."

Nigel: "That would be stupid, shards in your pocket's no good. This is...
folds down on all four sides with lit-el hinges, and the only bad
          part is... the wine leaks."

Charlie: "Oh, well... but as soon as you get that worked out..."

Nigel: "That's the bug you see... but Leonardo..." (gets cut off)

David: "'Till then we'll all have to use paper cups like everyone else,
right?!" (said in his all serious face and wise voice!)

Nigel: "Yea, well don't rub it in.."

Charlie: "But as soon as you work that out it'll be ok... Now, is the
          band any different?"

All: "Older... More mature... more maturity... etc"

Charlie: "Do you sound different?"

Nigel: "No, we sound, louder... cuz you always got to sound louder. We've
got a new keyboard player because the old one went to visit the
grave of the drummer and the grave exploded and he was killed."

Derek: "The scientific explaination was ME-thane gas build-up. We've
got a new drummer who's the younger twin brother of our ex-
          drummer, who just insisted..."

David: "It's very complicated, yea..."

Charlie: "The younger twin brother..."

Derek: "20 minutes, yea."

Charlie: "...so you get somewhat the same sound?"

Derek: "Yea, but harder."

Charlie: "Now you're going to tour with this new album?"

Nigel: "Oh yes, in May we go out all over the United States and then
back to England and we end up at the Royal Albert Hall in July."

Charlie: "And David, is there another album, er, another movie in all of
          this?"

David: "Nah, I hope not. I mean the last one made us all a bit nervous.
We were shown one cut in the film that really made us look rather
good, and a bit mature before our time. So um, now that we've
achieved actual maturity there's no reason to try and fake it
          with a film."

Charlie: "Well, it's wonderful that you're all are back together, I think
          this is a blessed event."

David: "It's nice that you're back together too, Charlie."

Charlie: "Well, that's still debatable..."

David: "Oh."

Derek: "Well turn it up Charlie!"

David: "Bye Gents!"

                Goodbyes...

I caught the tour's opening show here in Colorado Springs and wasn't
blown away by the TAP. The humor was great as well as the acoustic set.

    Nigel had his stacked MARSHALLS.

My 12 year old son was a bit restless and bored by the end of the 2 Hr.
+ show. (15 minute intermission in the middle).

All-in-all, the show was fun and relaxing.

    Catch it if you can...

Wait a minute here...... Are you saying the members of Spinal Tap
actually play intruments? This is news to me! They are all
comedians, not musicians! Two of them have been regular cast members
of SNL for a short time, and one played Lenny on Laverne and Shirley.

I realize it possible for a comedian to also be a musician, but I
figured some other band played the music and they just did the
    'acting'.

Even though they're comedians, they always played and wrote their own

I think the "Break Like The Wind" CD and Tour replaced the movie. It
was a great concert, though! :^)

I'd only see a movie if Rob Reiner did it again.

I've got that movie! It's not up to the original's standards, but still
a laugh. It's set up in a reunion type of deal. They do some interviews
and the whole movie revolves around the show they are doing. Pretty
    cool...
