1228.0. "Old Man's Child" by SUBSYS::MSOUCY (MentalmETALMike) Mon Apr 28 1997 10:13

    This note is for a band called Old Man's Child, came in a nice digipak
    (i guess you call those cardboard foldouts this?). Fairly heavy, has
    classical guitar on a couple tracks done by another person. I think
    they are more Black Metal than Death Metal with the vocals, but it
    still is quite dark. Sorin, heard them yet? I think they have more than
    one release. This one is titled "Born of the Flickering".

    I'll post more on it later when I have time to listen to it a bit more.

    	I ordered it from CM, will comment when I hear it.

1228.3I liked it a lot!KAOFS::C_MENENDEZCARLOS, SOO ONT MCS (705)945-7862Mon May 12 1997 15:3119
    	Mike:

    	You got it! nice digipack, although the problem with these boxes is
    that once they start collecting dust the paper usually goes down the
    drain. It might take a few years, but the abuse is there.

    	The music is very nice. I don't know if you can catalog these bands
    as "melodic" or "progressive" , but I think it borders on black metal
    easily. I like it very much, though, it's a nice break for the regular
    pounding my ears take on death metal.

    	Didn't you love the picture of "Jardar" on the pack, though? All
    you can see is candles!!

    	Mike: if you haven't heard Dissection's "the storm of the light's
    bane", try to get it. What you get in the "DIJTB" compilation is just a
    taste of the real thing. Similar to Old Mans Child, but awesome!

    re: -1

    Glad you like it. Now if I can get my girlfriend to give it back to me
    (tomorrow night when she comes over) I will move it into the changer in
    the car and get a chance to listen to the whole thing. Yeah, I thought
    it was funny with just candles there (drummer I think he is).
    Definitely like the cover work too!

    You need a dose of Opeth! I need to get Skepticism and Winter soon!

1228.5it's actually not too bad!SUBSYS::MSOUCYMentalmETALMikeThu May 15 1997 09:3722

    Well, I had a chance to listen to it through on the way in this morning
    and it's not too bad. Vocals are a tad rough (not gutteral/growl stuff)
    and it has some cool moments, especially when they use an acoustic
    guitar on one tune, some keyboards used sparsely. Overall not bad, but
    I would definitely up the bass in the mix as I don't think it is as
    prevalent(sp) as it should be in the recording. I think they may have
    one other release.

    Carlos, check out:

    www.borg.com/~lordxul/ds1.htm(l) for Dark Symphonies mail-order. They
    have a bunch of stuff we can't get through normal channels, and a lot
    of stuff you would probably love, and there are some reviews on most
    all the discs there so you can get a feeling for what the music will be
    like. CDNow is starting to do this too with some links I think to
    Mega's (miika(sp)) page of bands which I posted somewhere in I think
    99.* for a link to a bunch of pages for bands from a-z.

    I think I am ordering Skepticism and maybe one more today.
