1131.0. "NEXT ticket agency info" by POOKY::OROURKE (I'm going to a land downunder) Thu Feb 29 1996 11:24

I thought I'd post this in a separate note so that it wouldn't get
purged when the GIG note gets cleaned out.

IMPORTANT NOTE: A few weeks ago, a new company, NEXT, was announced that
is going to be competing with Ticketmaster. Well, it's here and
some of the shows going on sale this weekend are going through
NEXT. (By the way, NEXT stands for New England Express Ticketing.)

To reach NEXT's automated system with a touch-tone phone ($4.75
service charge per ticket bought + $2 handling fee per order), call
617-423-NEXT. To use a real person ($5.75 service charge per ticket
	+ $2 handling fee), call 617-423-6000.

Also, you can use the normal box offices (no service charge) or go
to a NEXT outlet ($4 service charge per ticket). The outlets are
at the Newbury Comics on Newbury Street as well as the Newbury Comics
in Harvard Square, Natick, Burlington, Braintree, Shrewsbury, Saugus,
Warwick RI and Nashua NH; the Orpheum Theatre and Great Woods box
office will also sell NEXT tickets (but maybe only to their own
	venues' events?).

NEXT is at http://www.boston.com/next, but no tickets will be
available through the Internet at this time.

	Other NEXT phone numbers:
Customer service (for issues involving tickets you've already
	      bought) is at 617-368-9400.
The pre-recorded information line is at 617-679-0800 (the
information at this line seems to be the same as at 423-NEXT,
but you can't order tickets through the information line).

I'm a bit lost here, what's so great about NEXT Vs. ticketmaster
if there is anywhere from a $6.75 to $7.75 per ticket service charge? I
don't think I have the whole picture here do I?

1131.2politically correct explanation!POOKY::OROURKEI'm going to a land downunderThu Feb 29 1996 15:2619

    RE: -1

C_Q: I guess you missed the earlier conversation on this. While
trying to be politically correct, let's just say there have been some
accusations that certain ticket companies 'hold back' tickets from the
general public and then sell them on the side at a mark up to ticket
agencies that you see with ads in the paper selling tickets at 10X
face value. Some of these accusations come from people that work for
said agency and have supposedly seen it done. Other accusations are
just based on the 'how can I sleep over night, be first in line at my
local agency and still not get a ticket'.

Anyway, the hope is by having NEXT in town, their process might be
fairer or maybe the competition will drive better behaviour.

    Hope this helps...

And there's a new process that's been used to combat scalpers,
involving 1 ticket per buyer and having to reserve said ticket
and pick up said ticket with a valid ID.

Works quite well, but is paperwork intensive and somewhat costly
    	for the ticket provider.

1 ticket per buyer is stupid..

Well, it's supposed to guarantee that the fans who spend their
time waiting in line for tickets will actually get good seats,
instead of the 10th guy getting an "obstructed view" seat and
the 11th guy not even getting a ticket because the show's al-
    	ready sold out.

1131.6DECWIN::JUDYThat's *Ms. Bitch* to you!Thu Feb 29 1996 17:288

But what about people that want to go to the show together.
If they're standing one behind the other in line, are they
guaranteed to get seats next to each other?

I agree with JW.......... not a good plan.

    From Todays Paper.

NEXT will be able to handle an enormous amount of calls, which should
prevent the busy signals customers frequently endure while trying to
purchase tickets for major shows by phone. The system allows close
monitoring of potential scalpers, because each caller will have a
six-ticket limit and the computer systems can track multiple purchases
with the same credit card as well as the same mailing address.

I called the person number and got through in less than 10 minutes.

I ended up in Row Y in Section 7 which means they sold most of the shed out in
less than 10 minutes - sure...

They should have a 3rd number. Pay obvious bribes for better seats.

Ya... I called for Ozzy tickets and got through like 15minutes
after they "supposedly" went on sale and still ended up in section 7.
Best available seats???? Whats the deal with that?

I called the automated system once before and I thought it was
pretty cool. I didn't order tickets...just wanted to check it out.
I did think it was kind of slow though...

Do Alice/Scorps tix really go on sale at 7pm tomorrow? That sounds like
an odd time.
