1017.0. "Offspring" by WONDER::REILLY (Sean Reilly CSG/AVS DTN:293-5983) Fri Jun 17 1994 20:02

    Well, 'AAF has been playing their single "Come out and play" and I
    really think that tune rocks out. So I bought the CD, fully expecting
    a $11 single, but I have to admit, this thing's not too bad.

    Pretty good Friday night crank music, just the right amount of humor,
    just the right amount of seriousness.

    No solos if that's what you're looking for. Overall, much better than
    a lot of new stuff that has been coming out.

    Yeah, I like 'em too.
    On the other hand I tend to like anything that's
    released on the Epitaph label...

    Check Rancid and Pennywise just to mention two.
    And of course all time fave's Bad Religion

    I think NOFX are closest to a reference.
    And yes, Bad Religion are great. New CD sometime
    in August.

    	I've heard the song a couple times in the last week, and I like
    	it. I was going to come in here and post the "catch line" that
    	I was hearing on the radio of a song I figured was these guys
    	[for some reason] but I kept forgetting what it was ... "Gotta
    	keep 'em separated", so I couldn't even ask if that was the
    	right song!!

    	But I got in here today and saw that a couple people mentioned
    	the line.

    	Maybe I'll pick it up on the way home. But if I don't like the
    	album, Sean, you owe me. 8^)

    	[I'll have to turn you onto Scatterbrain and Duck Duck ... 2 of
    	the most under-rated bands of the last 5 years. You won't be
    	disappointed, I guarantee it.]

    	What's the title of the album?

    	The Milford MA Strawberries didn't have the new one, it seems,
    	but they did have another album by a band called The Offspring,
    	who may or may not be the same band.

    	I'll try Westboro this afternoon if I can.

    	Last week I picked up "Ignition" [the other Offspring album] so
    	I could at least have a teaser until I could find the new one.

    	Well, all I heard on this album was a bunch of noise. The band
    	has alot of energy, for sure, but I wasn't impressed.

    	And I finally got the new one, "Smash", at Newbury Comics on
    	Saturday night. Not bad, really ... "Come Out and Play" is the
    	best so far, but I've only listened through once. It's loaded
    	into the Duster, so if I drive that car tomorrow I'll give it
    	another listen.

Getting that far is no sweat! 8^) Right up my alley, ruff vocals and
easy guitar. It's the stuff that our good 'ole high school bands were
made of %^).

My idea of the perfect voice is that guy in the car on Kiss Destroyer

    Yeah, a friend was talking to me about them over coffee this morning
    and said that.He said they basically came out of nowhere with a video
    (or two(?)) and an indie CD,moved 200,000 unit before anyone in the
    industry new what was goin' on.They appearently got signed up pretty
    quickly after that.

    -kev
1017.30CHEFS::GEORGEMThe West is the BestTue Mar 21 1995 11:084
Yeah, what I meant, though, was that note saying that 200,000 was a record for
an indie band/record......this is referring ti the US, yes? Independant bands
over here in Britain/Europe, regularly sell far more than 200,000 copies.
Maybe it's much more corporate based in the US or something.
1017.31POLAR::KFICZERETue Mar 21 1995 11:185
    Not quite sure on that on....good question!I would assume the US and
    Canada just because of them being tight industry wise.
    What label did they end up signing to anyhow?

    -kev
1017.32POLAR::KFICZERETue Mar 21 1995 11:214
    'Industry wise' inthat last note refering to means of outlets for

    I heard a very old British punk song today on the radio called "Smash
    it up" and it was the Offspring covering it!Absolutely excellant,about
    the exact same as the original(vocally)and almost the same musically.
    I was nearly fooled into believing it was the original artists!The
    original artists were the Damned,did they do well in the US when they
    were at their peak 78-80?

1017.36Wot? No "New Rose".YUPPY::OHAGANBTue Jun 27 1995 10:286
    Ian, I don't think the Damned made much of an impact in the States.
    Of all the bands from that period it was really only the Clash that
    made any popular ground and that was only after "London Calling"
    and then "Combat Rock".

    what about the Damned's "love song"...flippin' magic that was@If the
    Damned didn't make it big in the US,people will think the Offspring
    wrote "Smash it up" until they read the liner notes.
