980.0. "Smashing Pumpkins" by GNROSE::HAGGERTY (Consulting, Asia/Pacific/Americas, Acton MA USA) Mon Nov 22 1993 13:06

So are the Smashing Pumpkins too alternative for this conference?

Their new album (Siamese Dream) rocks, even if it is with a bit of an
    alternative flavor.

    ROOLIN!

The Pumpkins, who are touring in Europe, are about to release an
EP here in the states. The disc will be titled "Zero", and will
feature a remix of said tune from the ever-roolin Mellon Collie and the
    Infinite Sadness album.

In addition, TSP will include 5 new tracks of outakes from MCATIS,
one of which is am 18 minute long song! Total disc time is about
58 minutes, but is still being called an "EP" due to the number of
songs included. Sounds like the Dream Theater syndrome to me.

SMASHING PUMPKINS singer BILLY CORGAN got so stoned before a
soundcheck in Amsterdam, Holland, he couldn't perform. Corgan says, "First
thing I did when I got to Amsterdam was to go out and get some hash
bon-bons. I ate one and an hour went by and I thought, 'It's not working',
so I ate another one - and then I went to a rehearsal before the show, and
I was so stoned I couldn't even play a keyboard." According to Corgan, the
story explodes the media myth that he is always melancholy. "Everyone always
interviews us so seriously. There's very little room to have any personality
beyond pontificating about the philosophical aspects of rock'n'roll. No one
ever asks us about getting high. Everyone asks us why we're sad." Moral of
this story: Don't eat hash bon-bons right before a public performance, dude.
   Wait until afterwards.

Backup of Alternative Rock Band Found Dead At Manhattan Hotel

     By Associated Press, 07/12/96

NEW YORK (AP) - A backup musician for the alternative rock group
Smashing Pumpkins was found dead this morning in his Manhattan hotel
room, apparently of a drug overdose, police said.

Police officer Olga Mercado, a department spokeswoman, identified the
man as Jonathan Melvoin, 34, adding that he played keyboard for
Smashing Pumpkins. He is not one of the band's regular members.

She said his body was found at 4:30 a.m. at the Regency Hotel. He died
of an apparent drug overdose, Mercado said.

No other details were immediately available.

The Chicago-based band, which first came to national prominence about
five years ago, combines various rock music styles in a multilayered
sound, with lyrics expressing Generation X discontent. Their albums
     are ``Gish,'' ``Siamese Dream,'' ``Pisces Iscariot'' and ``Mellon
     Collie and the Infinite Sadness.''

The group was in town for concerts at Madison Square Garden.

The band's regular members are lead singer Billy Corgan, drummer Jimmy
Chamberlin, guitarist James Iha and the bassist, who goes by the
     single name of D'Arcy.

Several years ago, the Smashing Pumpkins came near to kicking out
Chamberlin because of his recurring drug abuse, Rolling Stone and
     other publications reported.

He kept clean, and after Nirvana's Kurt Cobain committed suicide in
1994, the Smashing Pumpkins became arguably the top alternative rock
     act in the country.

The Pumpkins co-headlined the Lollapalooza tour in 1994 and are
currently on tour in support of ``Mellon Collie.'' The double CD
contains two hours of new music in various styles of punk,
     psychedelic, heavy-metal and even country.

The music industry has recently been discussing whether to take steps
in response to a wave of drug-related casualties, including the death
of Shannon Hoon of Blind Melon and the addiction of Stone Temple
Pilots singer Scott Weiland. The Stone Temple Pilots had to cancel
their summer tour after a judge ordered Weiland into a treatment
     program.

Music executives have pushed for wider use of the industry's MusiCares
program, a 7-year-old network that offers money for musicians to seek
physical and mental health care and help for substance abuse.

Hmmm...perhaps this is why some thought it was Chamberlin:

AP- A backup musician with the alternative rock group Smashing Pumpkins
was found dead in a hotel room of an apparent heroin overdose yesterday
and the group's drummer, Jimmy Chamberlin, was charged with heroin
    possession, police said.

Chamberlin was with the keyboard player, Jonathan Melvoin, 34, when he
overdosed, a police source who spoke on the condition of anonymity told
the Associated Press. No other arrests were expected, the source said.

Chamberlin, wearing sunglasses, limping and visibly shaken, was given a
misdemeanor summons and released from the plice station at about 2:20
p.m. He collected his belongings and was escorted by his lawyer and
two long-haired (don't you love that description!) roadies into a black
    car with dark windows.

The other band members- frontman Billy Corgan, guitarist James Iha and
bassist D'Arcy had no comment as they left the 19th prcint stationhouse
in a black van shortly before 1:00 p.m. today.

As a follow-up to Al's note, here was the press release info.

The band today has announced that they are firing Jimmy as their drummer. The
band will not be holding open auditions for the position. Here's the press
release:

Today we are very sorry to tell our friends and fans that we have decided to
sever our relationship with our friend and drummer Jimmy Chamberlain. This may
come as a shock, to some and to others perhaps not, but to us its devastating.
For nine years we've battled with Jimmy's struggles with the insidious disease
of drug and alcohol addiction and its nearly destroyed everything we are
and stand for. So we have decided to carry on without him and wish him the
best we have to offer. The three of us plan to seek an immediate replacement
for Jimmy and to finish the touring we started at the beginning of this year.
We would like to thank everyone for their well wishes.

member of the Frogs, who takes over for the late John Melvoin, another
recent victim of the heroin highway. Rehearsals are under way as the

Glad They won All those Awards..Cuz they Won't Next_Year.
New Drummer Seems to Fit in.
    I Think the Bass_Player Looked Hauntingly_Sexy.

Seeing Billy Corgan standing next to Rodman, I didn't realize he was so
tall. I mean he looks like he's 12, so I guess I'd never guess he'd be
    over 6 feet tall.

its a pity he can't colour co-ordinate his jacket and trousers properly!

does anyone else think he looks kinda Bowie-esque when David Bowie was
in the movie "the man who fell to earth?"
