975.0. "Hoey, Gary" by DECAGE::HOWES (Cruisin' through this fairytale...) Thu Sep 30 1993 15:24

Hey anyone heard of this Guy? Gary Hoey... He has a song out
now, called Hocus Pocus that is REALLY cool! I went to Stawberries
looking for it, and they have a 'I' music thing where you can
listen to music before you buy it... I listened to parts of
four of the songs and they all sounds great!!!!

All the songs are without vocals..... Anyone have any more info?
I am looking forward to picking it up...Strawberries was out of
	it....

It's a cover of Focus' Hocus Pocus. It's heavier sounding than the original,
but it's not better...

975.2The are pretty HEAVY. ;)DECAGE::HOWESCruisin' through this fairytale...Thu Sep 30 1993 15:378

The other songs sound really good.....but I will need
	more of a listen....

I agree with Tim -- I heard this while in Oklahoma on Z-ROCK, and
thought "gee, this sounds like Megadeth doing a really bad cover of
Focus' HOCUS POCUS" ... but then I said to myself "the guitar kind of
blows, can't be Megadeth, Marty would be wailing on those harmonic
    minor scales".

It's heavier sounding, but the lead guitar is a real let-down!! ;'(

The lead's not the greatest, but I liked the segue into a couple of
other songs in the middle, I was bustin up! I think it's a decent
    cover, at least it's interesting.

I think the album is pretty good. You acn hear the influences of Vai,
Satriani, and even Yngwie ( ack ). He may not be incredible, but he
brigns a new name to the list of guitarists we can nit pick (for the
haters) and rave (for the lovers) about. He may bring new ideas and
    technique, Who knows?

I give the proverbial thumbs up.

975.9I like the heavy songs but the SOUTHERN ones are lame...DECAGE::HOWESCruisin' through this fairytale...Mon Oct 04 1993 12:4414

I picked it up over the weekend.... It seems really
'southern' influenced.... Some of the songs are
pretty good.... but many of them are just not impressive,
seems like they put the best parts from the best songs in
the 'I' thing, not really a good comparision to the whole
	album....

I give it a thumb up and a thumb down. ;)

I saw part of the video for Hocus Pocus and have decided that I do like
his cover of it. I like the Nugent riff he tosses in there.

I remember hearing this cover about a month or more ago - it took me
forever to find out who did it, since 'BCN would never announce who did
    it.

It's pretty hard, but interestingly enough, Hocus Pocus' guitar was
much faster/heavy/technically competent. And... leaving out the
yodelling is leaving out the *signature* of this song. :^) I guess I
put this in my "I like the song just 'cause it is an inspired cover of
a really cool song lots of people either forgot or never heard of"
category. I'll probably pick up the CD.

I agree with Greg, the "Stranglehold" tangent is the best part!

Btw, the Focus album Hocus Pocus is on?.... the entire rest of the LP
is almost straight classical - not an ounce of rock! Cracked me up
when I bought it all those years ago.

One of the songs on "Moving Waves" [the Focus album] has about
15 parts to it and isn't bad at all.

But most of it, like Sean said, is classical. Very strange to
have a crankin' guitar instrumental [with yodelling!!] mixed
    	in with classical pieces.

I finally heard "Hocus Pocus" last night. And if I had never
heard the original, I'd like this alot. Great guitar work,
good drumming [is this Pete Cook's new band?].

BUT ... the yodeling is very sadly missed. You just can't
replace yodeling with a guitar. And it's missing the "kick"
of the original, although I really don't know exactly why
    	yet.

I never liked the original BECAUSE of the yodeling! Not even the heavy
guitar could make up for it IMO.

But I think Hoey's version is excellent! The yodeling isn't missed
with me, and I think it's got a lot more "kick" than the original.

Gary Hoey and Ian Moore were on Rockline last night. Gary played Hocus Pocus
live and it sounded pretty good.

His biggest influence: Stevie Ray Vaughan. He talked of the time when he met
the man and how impressed he was with SRV's playing.

I have an album by some generic rock band from a few years ago, it has Gary
on guitar and Frankie Banali (ex-Quiet Riot, ex-Faster Pussycat) on drums.
Don't remember what the band was called though, I'll have to check it out.

Just heard his new rendition of the WAR tune, "Low Rider"
which will be appearing on "The Endless Summer II" soundtrack.
This dude's chops are all there, but something about his tone!?!
I don't know what it is, but I don't like it. Too many notes
all jumbled together in a fine, distorted mess!! He should
clean it up a bit for this tune.

I'll take the Exodus version anyday...
