956.0. "Butthole Surfers, The" by BUSY::SLABOUNTY (SomeoneLeftTheCakeOutInTheRain) Mon Jun 14 1993 14:04

I heard "Who Was In My Room' on the radio last week, I think,
and saw the video Saturday night ... crankin'!! I had thought
it was Aerosmith [sounds like "Toys in the Attic" stuff, IMO].

Anybody know how the rest of the album is? I'm thinking of
buying it just for that song!!

    Wot a bloody awful band.

I`ve got Hairway to Steven and Lotust Abortion Technician, and whilst
it may be clever to some,to your average geezer who likes a good tune
    it`s utter crud.

    so there.

I just heard this song this morning - it sounds *exactly* like old Toni Iommi
on guitar! The sound, the playing style, the leads, everything! It was a
pretty cool song, not awesome, but pretty good.....

They have several albums out & I have foggy recollections of liking
whatever cuts got played on the radio over the years. I don't own any
of them, but based on what I've heard, they're all pretty solid. The
newer ones are probably better produced.

Ya, I get the Black Sabbath (or early Zeppelin) connection too, not so
    much Aerosmith though.

I'm with GTI - I'm gonna get this just for that one song! (wouldn't be
    the first $12 single I purchased, d'oh).

I see the Iommi guitar, can't really say it sounds like old 'Smith to
me, but I like the fuzzed out voice - it's the same type used on
the Four Horesemen's "Moonshine" (another totally cranking tune).

Aren't the larger % of Gibby's vocals thru a megaphone. Last
time I saw them that's all he did. Scream thru a megaphone into
	the microphone.

	ian,

JBMHR is vox. The megaphone could have been for that show,
I don't know. SWIMRLN sounds like a vox. If you get JBMHR
anyone, get the single, the LP has the pusillanimous version.

Is that how he gets that distortion? I wondered what kind of
distortion processor he used. It was obviously heavily EQed.

After listening to it some more, the only thing that sounds
like Aerosmith is that the vocals sort of sound like Steven
Tyler, which is who I thought it was when I first heard the
    	song.

I was with a friend when I bought the CD, and popped it into
the player on the way home, and when "Who Was in My Room"
started he said "This sounds like sh*t!!" ... so I had to
tell him it was supposed to sound like that, and then he
thought it sounded pretty good. 8^)

OK. I did go out and buy this. And far from my worries (joke band)
and expectations ($12 single), this CD is coming close to vying for
my favorite album of the year. These guys may not have the production
of U2 ('though I notice John Paul Jones of Led Zep produces), but this is
    definitely a crankin' album.

I was just looking around to see if I can find some info on naurosis
    and bumped this topic
I think I may be of some assistance to you:

I.W.S (the last lp) is the closest thing the B.S ever got to heavy
metal,if you liked them enough to go try some of their earlier stuff
I belive I have the whole stock:

1983 - brown reason to live-alias "pipi the sailor" - very rough noisy
music which reminds the early bands of the eighties (not available on
    c.d)

    1984 - live pcppep - live performence (n.a.o.c.d)

1985 - caso raro - a very rare bootleg which holds unreleased material
& new virsion to older songs (n.a.o.c.d)

1985 - blind eye sees all - a video release of live performence at the
chicago traxx + very sick interview with the band (especially gibby
    haines)

    1986 - psychic...powerless...another mans sac - three singles - not very
    metalish

1986 - rembrandt pussyhorse/cream corn from the socket of david - this
lp is mostly based on samplers and electronic music (I hate electronic
music but this as usual is great)

1988 - locust abortion technitian - an absulutly amazing
    album,definitely their best piece

    1988 - widowermaker ep! - another exelent piece, the 4th track H.M
    lovers would like (called "booze,tobbaco,dope,pussies,cars")

? - hairway to steven - kind of a melodic lp, much softer than their
    other stuff

1990 - double live cd - the only thing they ever done that I dont own
if there's anyone out there who knows where I can find it please inform

1991 - pioughd - this is becoming closer to what you're probably
    looking for

1993 - indipendent worm saloon - you'll probably like & it seems you
already have it (atleast some of you)

the song was covered by the revolting cocks (al jourgenson & paul

the lp it came from - linger ficking good - is regarded as a

I picked up "Psychic, Powerless ..." the other night out of a
bargain bin ... these guys are very strange. Vox vocals are
OK in small doses, but not when used to extreme.

I definitely don't like it as much as IWS, that's for sure.

Picked up ElectricLarryLand the other day...

Not too bad -- a few of your basic BHS punk-rockers like "Birds,"
"Ulcer Breakout," and "LA," the requisite bizarro numbers like
"Let's Talk About Cars," and "Thermador," and the delightfully
out-of-place ballads like "Jingle Of a Dog's Collar" and "TV Star."

"Pepper" is an interesting piece, although a bit derivative - take
one part Jim Carrol's "People Who Died" and two parts Beck's "Loser"
    and you got this.

A good one for fans, not the one to start on for newcomers.

Mostly the alternative stations are playing this one, although 'AAF is
spinning it. This is turning into the song that makes me hate the
    Surfers. :^( Enough already.

Gibby was funny talking about the obvious rip-off this song is. He was
recalling how one critic said it sounded like Beck, Jim Carroll's
"People Who Died" and the Nails "88 Lines about 44 Women." I guess some
reporter than did a critique of the CD and complained that the song
covered Beck, Carroll and the "Nine-Inch Nails." Gibby got a good laugh
out of a reporter plaigarizing a review, and incorrectly to boot, that
criticizes him for plaigarizing. :^) Then again, maybe it doesn't take
    much to make Gibby laugh.

Obviously I agree with the critisim, though, as I stated the same
thing (except the Nails part) in my first review a few notes back (but
I came up with it my own, honest).
