953.0. "4 Non Blondes" by WONDER::REILLY (Sean Reilly CSG/AVS DTN:293-5983) Fri Jun 11 1993 00:40

Okay.

The radio stations have been playing their hit "What's Up" for a while
now, so a new topic is fair game.

I usually dislike pop metal, but I've found myself warming up to the
occasional band in this category. For instance, a guilty pleasure of
mine is Tesla.

I like this band similarly, and I think "What's Up" is decent tune.
For extras, they have cool cover art.

Anyone else check out the CD?

I've heard it and didn't like it at all. It's total retro-mid-70s
sound. "What's Up" is by far the most interesting song on there. I
think it's very boring, and get's irritating in short order. I also
don't care for the production they used on it, too much reverb on the
lead vocal, which still couldn't hide the fact that the woman can't
stay on pitch. Normally that doesn't really bother me (I mean, I like
the old Velvet Underground stuff...), but I don't like it here.
Perhaps it's the fact that there's nothing else I find interesting
about the music to take my attention off of it.

Former noter Jerry White also ended up buying this, based only on that
one song, and his opinion was about the same as mine (except perhaps
that he was more vehement in his hatred of it). I seem to remember the
word "sucks" figuring prominently in his review...

There's also a note on this band in Radio_Radio, you might take a look
over there for some other opinions.

Saw them on Arsenio last night. I've only heard that one song
"What's up" and it makes me feel sick to my stomach. Her voice
really grates on my nerves. Let's see, female lead (acoustic), two
funny looking men on lead and bass, and a female drummer. Thats
all I know. The music isn't bad, the singer sounds like she is
    "howling" at the moon sometimes.

    Just my .02 worth.

Cj, who will watch Anthrax tonight!

I absolutely LOVE this band and their CD,'Bigger, Better,
Faster,More!'. And as 'weird' as they may look (which is hardly a
reason to like/dislike a group), I gotta admit I kinda dig it. Also
that's actually another chick on bass....hard to tell I realize but it
    is.....

Linda Perry-vocals, acoustic & electric guitar
    Roger Rocha-guitar
    Christa Hillhouse-bass,vocals
    Dawn Richardson-drums

I find her 'grating voice' great...raw but that's what I like about it.
But unless you're into this type of music you're not gonna like them!

I think that this band should Pre_Tend that they're Dead.
    I Can't throw stones tho,BeCause I haven't heard Most of their Stuff.

    Best guitar work.
Art rock bands had gotten better in the early 70's.
New wave in the late 70's blows away what it degraded into.
Top 40 sings were shlocky, but fun. Today, their overproduced
rap/funk/Madonna/dance hybrids that *almost* made the only
thing bad about the 70's look respectable.
Songs went on for more than 10 minutes.
    Concept albums.
    Real heavy metal.

I'm not accusing you of this, necessarily, but a lot of people only
seem to remember the good stuff from the 60s and 70s, the stuff that's
held up over time, and forget that it the minority of the music that
was available back then. There was a *lot* of really horrible stuff
that nobody remembers ('cause they don't want to).

Aye,i`ll agree with that. There was some utter rubbish, for example,Free
Led Zeppelin,Deep Purple,Black Sabbath and so on....but some sheer
inspired brilliance such as The Bee Gees,The Partridge Family, little
    Donny Osmond,Village People etc.

Don't know much about this band as I've only heard "Whats Up" plus one
other track.....so could someone confirm how many females are in this
    band.

A tenner rides on the answer.

I saw the line up posted in .3 and reckon the name Christa is female
but I'm noooooooo sure. Confirmation would be appreciated.

If the bass player is female does that not make 3 in total?

There's already Linda Perry (vocals) & Dawn Richardson (drums),
unless Dawn should read Don, I make that 3.

     Confused....I am!

I'll say it again, I hate this band! They sound absolutely terrible to
me! Now that that stupid "What's Up" video is on the every-10-minute
rotation on MTV, I have to keep changing the channel a LOT!

I wanna hear Beevis & Butthead slam on 'em... ;^)

Even Beavis and Butthead are too late, too little, and too derivative
(lessee Spicoli begat Bill and Ted begat Wayne and Garth begat
Beavis and Butthead..... or maybe Fred and Barney started it all?)

    I still like this band!
