Ths single is called "Pride and Joy". I've only heard part of it, twice. It
sounded ok to me - reminded me a LOT of the 'Presence' album, which was
a pretty cool, rockin' Zep album. I'll reserve final judgement until I hear
the whole thing, and the rest of the album....

    Well, I finally heard this tune several times this past weekend, and 
    I think it ROCKS!  Great stuff!!  I like it MUCH better than old LZ.
    It really grooved, and a great production to boot.

    Coverdale sounds like "Robert Plant meets Axle Rose"
    
    I really like the tune! then again it's got that Zep sound. The 1st
    time I heard it I thought what's this? another unreleased tune that's
    gona show up on the new box set...As the song went on I realized it
    wasn't Plant. 
    
    The title of the album is just "Coverdale/Page". I believe it comes out

    I heard the new song on the radio, sounded more Zeppelinish then the
    last album or two that Zep put out.  Coverdale sounds a lot more like
    Robert Plant in the Zep days then Plant does now and Page is back to
    his old guitar sound again.
    
    I donno, I couldn't really get into it.  Like listening to Kingdom Come
    or something, just didn't seem right.

For those unfamiliar, some of the guitar is similar to the old Bruins'

    I saw the video for 'Pride and joy' this morning. I'm not a big video
    buff, but to see Jimmy Page with that double neck Gibson just brought 
    back some great memories! I was also very impresed with Coverdale's 
    voice.

I guess I could agree, but some of Page's moves are pretty stale now.  He's
been doing the same shuffles and poses for 20+ years.  I finally heard the
song from beginnig to end.  Coverdale does look like Plant doesn't he?

I like the tune.  Who are the other two in the band?

    I think that it's great to see Page do something worth hearing. I'm 
    tired of hearing that Plant was the heart and soul of Zep. I really 
    wasn't impressed with Page's 'Outrider' album. I think it's good to
    see that he can rock without Led Zep.

    I saw part of the vid for this last night.  It's ok, but I think
    they're a little overly busy with all the scene cuts.  Musta been
    directed by the same person that did the couple of few Extreme videos.

    It's a good song, but I've gotten tired of the Zep style.  Even though
    it's well done, the style just seems kinda tired to me.  I'm sure it'll

    It's the way of radio/MTV, Tim.  Seems like almost everything they
    play, they burn it into the ground.  They're so stupid about it that
    they KEEP playing it after everyone in their audience HATES the stupid
    thing, usually until the start getting requests that they *not* play
    it!  (Yes, I've done that...call 'em up and say "Like, y'know that song
    by xxxxxx?  The one that you play about every half hour?  Could you
    please NEVER play that again?")

    Great album. Listened to it a couple times last night. Page has
    actually put out some great guitar work. (Outrider, blech)
    My favorite tune is "Feeling Hot" it's heavy and fast. Lyrics are
    a bit childish persay but thats Coverdale for ya. The (mandatory)
    ballad is really good too. ("Take Me For A While")

    The album has Danny Carmassi (Heart) on the drums. Former Bad English

The Boston Globe had nothing good to say about this band other than Jimmy
Page is in it.  They said that C/P sounds like Led Zep with a bad singer,
or Whitesnake with a good guitarist.

    I think it's pretty clear that the Zep style was Jimmy Page's musical
    style.  It's difficult for him to divorce himself from that because
    that's what he writes.  Seems clear from this new album that that's
    what he does best.  His previous post-Zep efforts at sounding different
    just didn't work for me.
    
    Now as far as the selection of Coverdale, well...  It'd be pretty easy
    for him to not *look* like Robert Plant in the Zep days, and I know he
    can sing in a way that doesn't sound that much like him.  I never
    thought he sounded that much like Plant on the Whitesnake stuff, but he
    definitely does on this.

    I believe that a lot of someone's vocal style is cultivated, not what
    they're born with.  As I said before, I didn't think he sounded like
    Plant when he was with Whitesnake, why is he suddenly sounding *just*
    like him now?

    Face it, they're Zep II.  If you like Zep, you'll like C/P.  But I'm
    not trying to say that in a negative way.  Zep was Page's big thing,
    and obviously the style of stuff he does best.  Since he's just doing
    his thing, it's hard for me to think of this as a rip-off (like
    Kingdom Come or such).

    No dude, not the NEXT Zep...the *current* Zep.  It's Page's thing and
    it's certainly fair for him to be able to do stuff in the style that
    he's done in the past.

    No.  If for no other reason, his voice has changed over the years and
    he can't sing like he did in Led Zeppelin any more.  Seems pretty clear

    Guess I should have phrased it "probably", in terms of liking it it if
    you're into Zep.  I haven't heard all of it, but the two songs I did

    WRONG!!! My complaint with this project is that it doesn't sound
    original and Coverdale makes me ill with the way he trys to impersonate
    Plant! Having the the same guitarist does not mean it has to sound so
    identical...geezus that is *only* one element of the band it shouldn't
    be the whole thing!!!!

    That's what irks me too. I don't think they sound anything like Zep.
    Sure Page's playing style is the same, and that will always be zeppish,
    but to be honest I think Coverdale is doing his best NOT to sound like
    Plant. Most of the songs on the album don't even sound like him. 
    
    The drumming sounds nothing like Bonham, Casmassi is much more dynamic
    in my opinion. The bass is nothing like JPJ either.
    
    So basically you don't like David Coverdale?

    Remember that Jimmy Page wrote a large portion of Zep's music,
    naturally things he writes are probably going to sound a lot like that
    unless he's consciously trying NOT to (which apparently didn't work

    No, I haven't heard the whole album but the Pride and Joy has turned me
    off so much I don't know that I want to. I'm not saying Paige shouldn't
    bring his style into whatever he is in (or that he couldn't help it)
    but it seems to me if you're supposedly doing a whole new project you
    want to try something different! What's the point of doing the same old
    stuff and just giving it another name?

    That style, as stated, has been Jimi's style for years. His riffs and
    writing approach are as much a part of him as Axl's and Jame's voice is
    to their respective bands. Why should he change his style ? Surely,
    wouldn't he be accused of selling out by changing his style to suit 
    a contemporary market ?
    
    There is nothing original in rock music today. Everyone is ripping
    everyone else off left right and centre. Take things for what they 
    are. If you like it, great, if you don't, too bad, wait for the next
    new release.

Subject: REVIEW & SUMMARY, Coverdale/Page album premiere (long)

Well, I enjoyed the premiere last night immensely.  Following is a not-too-
brief summary, interspersed with my comments on the songs (a/k/a opinions).
Redbeard was a joke as usual, though he asks decent interview questions.  He
did make a few mistakes;  noting the Atlantic "25th" anniversary celebration,
and claiming that JPJ was doing soundtrack work (which Page blew off in
classic Page style by saying, "...yeah...um...um...ah...um...maybe, but...")
Anyway, here goes.  Songs are denoted by the ** preceding them, and interview
segments are seperated by C for Coverdale, P for Page, & R for Redbeard:

**"Waiting On You"--Very Whiteshake-ish.  I do like the drum sound on most
  of the album, though it could've been a bit throatier (that is, less reverb
  and more point-of-contact miking).  The vocal/guitar mix also seemed to
  change over the course of the song--wonder if Page was doing some dial-
  spinning?  Anyway, not bad, but it didn't bowl me over.  And if I hear the
  lyric "'til the rivers run dry" one more time, I'm gonna vomit.

C-laments getting away from him blues roots (that's "muse," by the way, not
"moose"  ;-)  ).  R plays snippets of "Here I Go Again" and "Whole Lotta Love".
P talks a bit about the failed Zeppelin reunion--I'll quote him here.  One
note:  he seemes upset _still_ about this, and if you could hear his voice
you could tell right away how he feels about Plant at the moment.  But:

"...Robert certainly wasn't doing anything...and there was a great feeling in
the camp that we would probably be getting back together again in some shape
or form--some capacity--whether it be a tour or what.  But, I mean, as you can
tell at this point it just didn't happen...[softly] it just didn't happen,
so....  I think it's pretty safe to assume that if it didn't happen then...
then...you know, it's...well, it's pretty dim any...any chance of it happening
in the future.  Everyone...I mean, as far as Jonesey and I were concerned, we
were really keen to see it begin...get something going.  But, you know, Robert
just wasn't...[softly] wasn't interested.  Well, at the time...I mean, I'll
leave this for everybody's speculation:  that he thought it would harm his solo
career.  That's...that's what he said, which is rather peculiar, but...but
that's his reason."

So, you can see that relations seem to be a bit dicey.  Anyway...C went on to
explain his first awareness of Page, and showed himself to be quite
knowledgeable about the Immediate singles days.  He talked about how their
inital contact was put off a bit by his personal problems (no doubt Tawny
Kitaen dumping him), but then said that they first met in New York around
March of '91.  P described the first meeting as mostly feeling out the other's
personalities.

**"Feeling Hot"--Very uptempo, classic '70's rocker, perhaps something Deep
  Purple might have done.  Lots of overdubbed guitars--which brings up a point:
  Page has really worked himself into a corner on this album, with the vast
  number of overdubs, layered acoustic/electric work, synths, etc.  He'll be
  working very hard on stage, that's for sure.  Anyway...there are a few
  syncopated breaks very much like "The Ocean" in here, and a rockabilly solo,
  which is kinda ironic given Beck's new project:  an entire album of Gene
  Vincent tunes done in a painstakingly accurate Cliff Gallup style.  Not
  bad, certainly better than anything on "Outrider".

P describes their union as a "dangerous liason," talks about writing in Tahoe
(Nevada, for you non-USers), and C debunks the myth that David Geffen had
anything to do with them getting together (it was Page's management, according
to Page).  They recorded much of their writing (which was largely acoustic
guitar) on a "$50 recorder from Radio Shack".  In their very first writing
session, they came up with the following song:

**"Absolution Blues"--The first great track on this album.  There's a long
  freeform guitar solo at the beginning over a synth background, which actually
  quotes "Nobody's Fault But Mine" for one brief moment.  Another uptempo
  rocker, but more in the Page style.  Nice solo.  C also engages in a few
  Plantisms, but generally on this album he sounds very much like his own
  singer; the Plant style is not much in evidence, and his voice is extremely
  rough.  The song kinda reminds me of Mr. Big's "Addicted To That Rush," but
  without the solos.

P claims that this is his best work since Zeppelin (he's right).  C sez that
P pushed him hard on this project, and makes fun of the label that had been
applied to the band early on--he calls it "Leg-ends" (prounouncing it like
I wrote it).  Page gets a good laugh out of this.

**"Don't Leave Me This Way"--A _great_ song; slow, bluesy, with an excellent
  vocal that starts out in Paul Rodgers style and moves on to heights I've
  never heard C reach.  The verse line is vaugely like the opening to
  Aerosmith's "Seasons Of Whither".  There are some alternate meters in this
  song, as well.  Anyway, the _big_ news is that P actually mirrors some of
  C's vocal lines in the call and response sections, which he has pointedly
  avoided since the demise of Zeppelin.  Great to hear again.  The chorus/
  solo sections are stunning, but awfully similar to the thrashing climax
  of the Beatles' "I Want You".

C talks about his fascination with the blues;  his first exposure was Leadbelly
from his chemistry teacher.  He fishes a bit for a name, which P supplies
instantly (Alan Lennox, or something) that was another early influence.  He
goes on to mention Hendrix, then being bribed by the local priest to sing
in the church choir.

**"Easy Does It"--Pretty similar in style to "Friends," with the drone under
  a crawling chord structure.  While I usually hate the immediate labeling
  of any P acoustic work as being, "Just Like _III_!" I have to say that, in
  this case, it's accurate.  Fairly jazzy chord voicings, a few Plantisms from
  C, and a very un-Page-like electric section.

P notes, to R's disbelief, that very little from their past writing made it
on to this album.  But he notes one exception--a riff he came up with in '79
during the _ITTID_ sessions, that was ignored at the time, and ignored later
by Paul Rodgers in the Firm.  It supplies the opening riff for:

**"Shake My Tree"--Starts with a meticulously-picked, double-tracked acoustic
  intro.  This song is very complex, featuring alternate meters, a drum line
  that plays across the riff, P's infamous backward-echo technique, and more.
  The opening riff actually sounds like a blues version of something Robert
   Fripp might have done during the League Of Crafty Guitarists era, but overall
  the song actually sounds like it could have been a Yardbirds tune.  More
  harp solos on this one.

C notes that he conceived the acoustic opening of "P&J" as a Dr. John-style,
laid-back tune called "Barbados Boogie".  Then, as he notes:

"...and then, of course, he [Page] had to put in this enormous...you know...
 gutter, digusting, churning, malevolent, _sucking_ riff."

..which drew lots of laughter from P and R.  P notes that pre-production was
done in Reno.

**"Pride & Joy"

C gushes about P's talent and influence for a while.

**"Over Now"--Standard rocker, with lots of overdubbed guitars.  Coverdale
  sings one particular line that sounds an awful lot like the "Come mess with
  my sincerity, go down on my desire" line from Plant's "She Said" (I do have
  the right track, don't I?)  There also seems to be a bit of "Four Sticks"
  in here, mostly in the chord voicings.  There's a subtle wah-wah solo buried
  under the mix at the end.  Overall, it kinda sounds like it could easily
  have been on _Manic Nirvana_.

C talks about how the next song was based on his view of the Gulf War.

**"Whisper A Prayer For The Dying"--The most surprising track on the album.
  Incredible mood shifts.  There's yet another slow, melodic section, then
  a rockier section, but then P goes into a riff that can only be desribed
  as pure metal (and the production matches it), and C sings in a chillingly
  accurate Brian Johnson style (AC/DC, in case I lost you).  One minor
  complaint--the synth work (though it could be real strings, I suppose)
  sounds a bit too much like "Live & Let Die" at one point, then drifts into
  chording that sounds too much like "Kashmir".  But overall, this song reminds
  me of something Metallica might write (it doesn't sound like Metallica, but
  the song construction could appear on their latest album).
R lists the other players--apparently, Ricky Phillips and Jorge Casas (from
Gloria Estefan's band (!)) share bass chores.  C talks about their common
blues roots, and says, "We didn't sit down and say 'let's do a Led Snake
album.'"

**"Take A Look At Yourself"--The only (IMO) dog on the album.  I would bet
  that this is a C composition, though I'll probably be proven wrong on
  Tuesday.  This is a simple ballad, with some percussive guitar work similar
  to P's lines on "All My Love," and a solo in the style of "Blues Anthem"
  from _Outrider_.  This song got me thinking that maybe Denny Carmassi had
  a hand in the writing too, as it could easily have been a Heart song.

C says that he's confident this is the best work he can do at this point in
his career.  P notes that he wrote the next song while looking at his young
son in Tahoe.  C talks about the lyrics, and how they represent the kind of
loss they've both felt (Bonhan, Bolin), and how he pictures the song as old
buddies huddling around the fire for comfort.  R predicts the song will be
huge.

**"Take Me For A Little While"--He's right.  This is a monster.  It's also
  probably going to be controversial, as I can see how a lot of people will
  trash it for being a ballad.  But this is (IMO, of course) the best track
  on the album, and clearly miles above anythin P's done since 1980.  The
  verses are a thickly-composed acoustic setting similar to the acoustic
  sections in "Midnight Moonlight," which melts into an understated chorus
  with quite a few different guitars and a synth line that reminds one of
  the classic mellotron string sound, though again--I suppose there's a
  chance they used real strings.  The chorus is based on Page's favorite
  soloing chords:  Am, F, G...and after the first repetition features a
  beautiful guitar pattern that recalls both a Clapton solo line from "Wanna
  Make Love To You" and a Fleetwood Mac line (I believe from "7 Wonders," but
  I'm not a big FM fan).  The solo is wonderfully understated, and continues
  through the outro with C doing a bit of improv and the reintroduction of
  the signature guitar line.  Great song.

Well, that's it.  I can't really judge the album too well until I've listened
to it a dozen or so times, but I have to say I'm pretty impressed so far.

an exclusive interview with Jimmy Page and David Coverdale as a main article.
It is about 12 pages long with their recent colour pictures. Following are the
main contents of the interview:

-What makes you both to start this project?

DC: In early 1991, I received a phone call and was told if I had a interests
in doing project with JP. I respected him so much, so that I thought it is
interesting if only to talk about each idea.

-What do you think of DC when you first met him? (It was just after DC joined
Deep Purple)

JP: Very nice impression.
DC: At that time, I liked a British Blues like Zep , Clapton and John Mayore
played.

-What do you think of Plant when he denounced DC on "Serpence Albus"?

JP: I like that album, and I've never criticized him before.

-The reason you use Denny Kermacy(ex. Heart) as a drummer is that you expected
a vibration like Bonzo?

JP: I originally thought to have Simon Phillips play drums. But after all
Denny played all the songs.
DC: He is a very powerful, polite and excellent drummer. He sometimes gave us
 some good advice during the recording.

-How about the tour member? When will the world tour start?

DC: No idea yet, perhaps the tour will start from this summer or at end of
this summer, starting place will be Europe or US or Far East... but not yet
decided.

-Most of your fans would be expecting Zep and Whitesnake tunes at the concert.

JP: It's quite natural. We will enjoy playing them and we will sure to play
for many fans at our concert!

DC:We are both feeling gratitude and have honor to what we had done. We will
play Zep and Whitesnake tunes as highlights of a concert, and of course
Page/Coverdale tunes!
-It is said that this project will disappear soon as a one time project...

DC:Time will tell. I personally feel very sorry if this is a one time project.
A lot of idea will be put on the shelf.

JP: Possibility of keeping this project is very high.

-Why are there three producers? (JP, DC and Mike Frazer)

JP: I used 72track for recording. He(Mike) could catch up all the power we
were trying to emit. He also has an sensitivity when we played ballade. His
contribution to our recording values as producer. Three of us always
stimulated to each other when recording.

DC: I totally rely JP on recording. He is an excellent music builder.

-How many songs did you make for the album?

DC: Well, 15 to 16 songs, maybe.... We featured 11 songs in the album and the
 
rest of 4 songs will be released in the form of outtake singles collection or
something.

-What kind of process did you have when composing songs?

JP: First we made "Absolutin Blues". Two of us made all songs, no one else.
    During first week we could make a lot of songs naturally.
DC: We don't want to make songs at the spirit of "LED SNAKE, WHITE ZEPPELIN"

-What is the meaning of the album jacket?

DC: This is the traffic sign meaning two roads joining to one road. Try to
express _unification_ or _joining together_.

-Comments of songs in the album.

(Take me for a little while)

DC: This lyrics is very personal to us. JP lost Bonzo, and I lost T. Bolin. We
wish we could make anybody feel this kind of emotion -- "Take me for a little
while, Take me away from these sad thoughts, sing me songs to make me smile."

JP: Completely agree!

(Pride and Joy)---This will be the first video clip.

JP: We made this song during taking vacation at Barbados islands. Firstly this
song was called "Barbados Boogie" as sub-title. This is the only song that I
played harmonica in the album. Rest of harmonica was played by the man called
John Harris.

DC: This song is to celebrate the woman who is completely stable.

(Absolution Blues)

DC: We make this song when we first met at my house in Lake Taho.
JP: We depended upon only a cassette tape recorder to compose this song.
(Whisper A Prayer For the Dying)

DC: This song was also written at Barbados. I was a fan of Yardbirs. I assume
this song contains the same direction as Yardbirds used to have. Dark and
heavy song.

JP: Quite right.

-As a whole, do you think DC's lyrics is too personal?

JP: I don't think there is anything bad. I can satisfy what he believes is
right.

DC: JP understands all of the lyrics I wrote. It was important to us to
satisfy what we were doing at this cooperate task.

-Did you have some ego to make songs?

JP: Not at all. This partnership is not forced by anybody else.
DC: Two years have passed since this partner was made. We have respected to
each other and have made a very good partnership since then.

-Why are you always together for any interviews? Not to say this one.

DC: 'Cause it's a joint project. We both have partnership to each other.

-Jimmy, you haven't accepted so many interviews ever, have you? But this time
you have accepted a lot. Are you confusing to it?

JP: I am very proud of what we have completee this time. I only accept
interviews during these two weeks time frame, though.

-What is the difference between making songs this time? Could you make songs
easily just like you used to when you are in Zep or Whitesnake?

JP: Well...When I am in Zep there was a period that I could make songs easily
(first or middle period). But the period of making ITTOD, it was not so easy.
I can't answer to it clearly.

-What will you plan to do after the world tour?

JP: We will make something like an outtake album that includes the songs which
are not included in the album (with some surprise). After that, I have no idea
right now if you will start the recording of the second album.

DC: First, I want to see how this album would be treated after release. The
results will be a indicator whether we will continue this project or not.

-What is a technical difference in recording between what you have done in
remastering Zep songs in _Remasters_ album and this time?

JP: I used 2 inches tape for recording this album. I mixdowned songs in both
analog and digital ways. I assume analog has better sound than digital has. I
only persue digital way at the last mastering.

DC: Those who play a music like us would tend to make analog version too.

The ticket will start selling on Sep 25. This is already announced on the 
newspaper, so I think this is reliable enough.(I hope so, too.)
I'm interested in the stairway to heaven which will be sung by Coverdale.(I 
heard that they would play that sacred song on the tour.) Some people may be 
offended, but I'm sure that Coverdale will be skillful enough.(I don't wanna
hear here I go again played by Page, though.) 
Anyway, I must get the ticket by all means.

tickets sales were very slow. They ended up cancelling the U.S. tour 
altogether...

It's trivial, but I saw the advertisement on TV about C/P Japanese tour.
It uses Pride and Joy promotion video and says "The soulful shouting of 
David Coverdale will explode and Jimmy Page will show you the quintessence of
Rock'n'Roll!"(Of course, it's in Japanses.)

I went to the very first concert of C/P yesterday. The follwing is the 
concert review which I and my friend concocted. The concert was satisfactory 
to me.(Not f**king great, though) At least, I was not disappointed like 
Atlantic Zep Reunion in 1988.

I went to the long-waited C/P concert last night with Toshiaki(he is also a 
subscriber of this list). Looks like the time has come to let you inform C/P
first concert at Budokan, Tokyo!

It's been 21 years since the last time Jimmy has come to Japan to have Zepp 
tour in Japan... a long time.

Well, let me describe the detail.

          Brett Tuggle, keyboard, synthsizer, 12 strings guitar on Pride and

Jimmy appeared wearing black tight pants and white shirt with a black vest.
Coverdale was wearing black tight leather pants and bright blue swallow tailed
coat.

Overall, Jimmy looks very vigorous, but seemed exhausted at the end of the 
concert. Coverdale seemed always try to pay his respect to Jimmy's guitar 
play especially when he played Whitesnake tunes.

Jimmy made several brief comments while on stage like "It is our pleasure to
play first time here" or something. I don't remember exactly. At the encore
tunes, Jimmy changed his upper cloth to white T-shirts with C/P mark on it. 
It's a bit strange, though...

It seems to me that Coverdale tried hard to copy Zepp songs from studio 
recording ones. And IMTOD was really impressive.
I think the concert itself was medicore to good level, but it is hard to 
define what is their excellet concert now, cause they played only once!
 
Basically I enjoyed very much and happy to see Jimmy's stage for the first
time....

    	The demise of the Coverdale/Page project was reported in the UK
    	press last week. I think it said they played 7 dates in Japan and
    	that's the lot. Page is off to do some project with Robert Plant
    	(slated as not a LZ reunion), and Coverdale is mixing a Best of
    	Whitesnake album and may reform the band.
    
    	So I guess we won't see this tour at all.

    David Coverdale is an silly bugger and should give himself a shake.
    Whitesnake from the Slide it in/Saints and Sinners was waaaaaay better
