843.0. "Love Battery" by MSBCS::WHITWORTH () Fri May 01 1992 14:08

I just stumbled on this conference.....also used "REPLY/EDIT in
818 inadvertantly. I am not an HM"er but my son is....or at least
the music is classified as "Alternative". I'm wondering if any of you
HM'ers have heard of his group, or caught them when they came through
New England last month. The name of the group is:

                          "LOVE BATTERY"

                           SUBPOP LABEL

Latest releases: Between the Eyes and DAYGLO
Both or on Tape and Disc.

They originate out of Seattle and are associated with Nervana. They
just completed a 30 city tour and I caught them at CLUB BABYHEAD in
Providence, RI and the BREWERY in Portsmouth, NH. Not bad at all, I
enjoyed them thouroughly in spite of not understanding the music. They
played to soldout crowds. I played their latest release (DAYGLO) on the
CD last night, the dog left the room, but I found myself entranced with
the sounds. On the latest tour, they came down the west coast, all
through the south, up through New England, on up to Montreal, and then
headed back to Seattle hitting major cities in between. The studio has
them booked for a tour of Europe in the fall. They must be doing
something right, ROLLING STONE interviewed them when they were in NYC.
Catch them if you can and let me know if you do.....I'm looking forward
to "Road Manager"....maybe Public Relations....even Bus driver if they
    make it....

I found Love Battery on a SubPop compilation tape I have called "The
Grunge Years" and listened carefully to their song and have to say that
this band rips! Very interesting sound!

I'll probably be lookin for the CD, if I ever recover enough
    financially....

Are they gonna play in CO anytime?

It's real raw punk/"heavy alternative" sort of stuff. Not sure who to
compare their sound to that you'd know. Maybe Jim could suggest some
    similar sounding bands.

Also,if you ever read an interview with them,90% of it is how they hate
to be asked "what is it like to be an all girl band?"

    Aye,good band though.

They're also discussed in their own topics in both RAD and UK_MUSIC.

Greg's and the other descriptions are right on, I'd also add that they
also have their pop sensibilities well toned, and I'm not pointing this
out because of the fact that they're women but as silly as this might
sound their lyrics run the gamut between very intelligible, thought
	provoking to silly but enjoyable.

As much as I hate to put them into leagues with other bands...if you
like them then you might also like Hole (Courtney Love...),
	Scrawl, Babes in Toyland....

Also, they say the fact that they're all females wasn't intentional.

Babes in Toyland will also be back in town again some time soon,
where town is Providence and Boston.

Just like an other band I can think of one of L7's earlier releases
"Smell the Magic" will most likely get more attention now and
as for their earlier self-titled EP I've never seen it anywhere.

If you do pick up the above album keep in mind that there's
4 more songs on the CD - I just found this out recently. I
hate this crap when you already have format with fewer tracks.

They have various covers, one on the Teriyaki Asthma singles thing
which has recently been rolled up into an album...Theirs "Sweet
Sex" thing on Radio Tokyo might be of interest to anyone who
can't get enough of them Sabbath-like melody tunes....(like me)

So much for a 3 minute class break, I guess I went over but I needed
a break...my eyes are open now!
