839.0. "A Concert for Life (Freddie Mercury)" by CADSYS::CADSYS::FENNELL (Write me up for 125") Tue Apr 21 1992 02:56

Okay I'll start the note.

I just finished watching A Concert for Life. What a show. I think that
Fox did a good job editing the show down to 2 hours. I'll have to watch
MTV Saturday to see what I missed.

The show was a veritable who's who of British rockers. I was surprised not
to see Phil Collins (relieved as well) and Ozzy.

I was kind of saddened to hear all great Queen tunes and realize that
Freddie is indeed gone.

High points.

Annie Lennox and David Bowie doing Under Pressure

Elton John doing Bohemian Rhapsody (closing with Axl Rose)

Ian Hunter doing All the Young Dudes with Bowie and Mick Ronson. Joe Eliot
and Phil Collen doing dude backing vocals. This was a personal highlight
for me.

Paul Young did Radio Gaga. Who is this guy? He must be like Jimmy Cliff,
never made it to the states.

George Micheal and Lisa Stansfield did a good rendition of ?

Low points.

Def Leppard - Let's Get Rocked. Definitely a studio band. The new
guitarist stuck out wearing red - everyone else wore blue.

Liza doing the finale. She meant well, but...

Notes:

Was that Tony Iommi I saw? Why wasn't he credited? He played a lot.

Extreme didn't make Fox.

I always hatd Radio Gaga, but I have come to like it after seeing MTV's
Queen special and their performance at Live Aid. The words to that song
are really haunting.

Aye,a good concert overall,i especially like Axl Rose`s "UK" leather
jacket and that lumunious t-shirt of Jesus.

I turned over at the point of that Aids awareness concert in Africa
rubbish (to watch an hour or so of "Police Squad") then turned
back just in time to see James Hetfield doing er,wotever that song
    he wuz doing.

Scorpions... but never heard them play!

    Any clue's?

I watched also most of the show and it was fine.
It's a difficult task to sing the same songs as Fredie Mercury due to the wide
range of Fredie's voice.
The most impressing was for me George Michael which matched very well.
Paul Young is also very fine and most known in Europe for his mid-tempo and
ballad songs.

839.4A few other commentsLINGO::FAGGHeavy and LOUD!!Tue Apr 21 1992 08:5527
Yes, good stuff overall. Extreme were excellent. As was Bowie.

To answer some other points. Yes, Tony Iommi was there, and I'm convinced the
Scorpions were there as well. As for Def Leppard, well I went to get another
beer.

Sorry, but I didn't rate Paul Young that much. He tried hard, but his voice
just didn't have the power and projection needed for the stuff he was doing.
George Michael, on the other hand was a revelation. Most impressed.

We ended up with some pretty strange lineups. Like parts of Queen, Black Sabbath
Guns 'n' Roses, with Elton John!! But somehow most of it worked.

I think the greatest tribute to Freddie came from one of the people I was
watching the show with. We were commenting on whether so and so had the
right voice for particular songs and generally we agreed that they did. However,
one of them stopped us all in our tracks by saying that the originals were
all sung by the same person. Now if that doesn't show how great Freddie was,
I don't what does.

One gripe. Due to traffic holdups I managed to miss the opening set, and it
turned out to be one of the ones that I really wanted to see: Metallica.
What did they play? How did they sound (bearing in mind they were opening
and the sound is usually dodgy for an opening band at such events)?

Cheers,
	Keef.

Extreme were as you said excellent.... when they were doing the Queen
medoly (sp?)... and when Garry wasnot singing... however.... more than
words sucked just about as bad as ever....

Question to the Boston based noters... were Extreme ever good in a live
    situation?

839.6COMICS::JAMESMWont YOU be in my Book of Dreams??Tue Apr 21 1992 10:3345
    >>Paul Young did Radio Gaga. Who is this guy??
He had a few BIG hits in the mid 80's...'come back and stay' wherever I
lay my hat'. He has a great voice, but it just aint powerful enough for
    this material.

Yep Tony Iommi was there, Brian May brought him on to the intro from
'Heaven and Hell'. I saw Klaus and Rudy from the Scorpions at the end,
they were most probably hanging out in the Hard Rock Tent and got
themselves onto the stage for the finale.

    As for the concert:

Metallica - Brilliant as usual, 3 songs starting with 'Enter Sandman',
I cant think of the ohter two. James also did a storming version of
    'Stone cold crazy'

Def Leppard, I always thought they were meant to be a good live band,
what utter rubbish. They massacred 'Animal' and then proceded to sound
like the CD on 'lets get rocked'. Mr Elliot just hasnt got a good
enough voice to do the queen songs, he couldnt reach the notes.

Extreme were superb, I dont really like the band, but they seemed to
really put some effort into their peformance. But why ruin it with
'more than words'??. There medley of Queen songs was great and when the
lead singer did his bit on 'We will Rock you', well it were great.

G'n'R, sang 'Paradise City' and 'knocking...' and sounded better than I
have ever heard them before, Axel also made Bohemian Rapsody even
    better.

Annie Lennox proved again that she is totally wonderful and the only
thing wrong with her act was she was singing with Bowie, but I hate him
anyway so my opinions arnt valid.

The highlight for me was Lisa Stansfield singing 'I want to break Free'
she has an amazing voice, it is just a shame that she doesnt release
    better songs.

Liza Minelli, I know Freddie loved Cabaret, but I am sure they could
have found someone better to sing it.

All in all one hell of a brilliant concert.

Well, live IS suppose to be their forte and thats where that have
earned kudos from just about everybody that has seen them.
I've heard criticisms on their recorded stuff but as far as live goes,
    they've always excelled.
    What was wrong with "MTW's"?
    What songs did perform?

Well, I felt bad for Def Leppard. It was their first time playing with
Vivian Campbell. I'm sure they kept looking, expecting to see their
old guitarist, and he wasn't there.. I mean, unless they are always
bad in concert I think they should be given a break this time around!
Given the choice, they might not have wanted to play so soon with
    someone new.

Ya, Def Leppard.. I kept asking myself if that was V.C. playing
guitar.. He looked different.. I listened to a good part of it
    on WAAF, Extreme sounded good...

Speaking of Extreme, everytime I have seen them live, they were
Fantastic, but considering the last time I saw them was in a small
club.. (might have even been the Livingroom!!)

Yeah, I watched it too, and heard more on the radio before it started.
I was kind of disappointed at the "editing" which had to be done to
shorten it for FOX. Oh well.

I only heard the Metallica and Extreme parts on the radio and would
liked to have seen both bands. I thought that Extreme's performance
was better then many of the ones that got shown.

    High Points:

    Brian May's killer guitar tone!
Anne Lennox & David Bowie on Under Pressure
Elton John on Bohemian Rapsedy (at least until that idiot Axl butted in)
    Mick Ronson's playing with Bowie/Hunter!

    Low Points:

    Paul Young
Liza... (I really didn't care for her rendition of the song)

    Surprises:

George Michael actually sounded good and sang something I liked...

I really didn't think Def Leppard sounded all that bad. I mean, yeah,
they definately got a bad mix, but I didn't think their performance was
so off. The song, however, has sucked from the moment they wrote it.
I've heard a major portion of their new album and I'm convinced THAT
song is the worst thing on there. Why didn't they play something
    better????

All in all, the show was very enjoyable, albeit a little sad because of
    it's occasion.

I'm running with most of you so far on the good jobs, George Micheal did the

Yeah, I meant to include Axl singing on ANY song other then his own in
my "low points" section. He just KEPT running out there and butting
in! I was thinking "Get that clown off the stage, he CANNOT sing!"

I personally didn't care for GnR's song selection either, plus I
thought their performance was pretty lack-luster.

Did ya notice how Axel didnt particularly like the thought of Eltons

Wasn't that "touching" at the end of Bohemian, Axl and Elton all hugged
    up ? 8^) That's when I thought *I* was gonna hurl. Axl's voice
didn't sound too bad on "We Will Rock You" though - screamer for sure.

RE: Vivian with Def Leppard ...
I only saw part of "Let's Get Rocked". He played chords and sang some
backup. Hmmm, it'd be kinda hard for him to drop the ball on that one,
eh ? 8^) I thought they sounded as well as could be expected -
simulcasts hardly ever sound as good as they do live, and live
performances hardly ever sound as good as the CD. Such is life.

    RE: Liza ...
Gimme a break ! What a puke way to end the show. She sounded more
    like Kate Hepburn.

Pete, I too was cracking up watching Axl and Elton together.
Elton should get rid of that wig! too funny!

I don't like David Bowie so I can't say much about his.

I'm anxious to see George Michael.....I've always liked him
and if some of you in here who don't but liked his performance,
    	it's gotta be good.

Well, not too mess up this gallery of slams...but I thought that
the whole show was in great taste! I mean, too get Elton and Axl on
the same stage? This is what music is about! Queen's whole point was
to pay tribute to Mercury...not get the best looking or best voice.

I think Freddie enjoyed his show! I know I would have! Like
    Axl,hate Axl, Like Liza,Hate Liza...what's the difference...They were
there to pay tribute...not win a popularity contest.

Freddie was a very big Liza fan, and although I may not like her style
of music, I thought she did it very well and is a very professional
    performer.
839.20Axl rocked the houseCAVLRY::BUCKNo coasters in hell!Tue Apr 21 1992 17:2120
I think all you Axl bashers are nuts!! IMHO, Axl was the best singer
of the night. Now, don't read that Axl is the best singer of the lot,
WHAT I AM SAYING IS the monitors on stage obviously sucked (musicians
covering around the drummer, as no one could hear!!), and while there
were some killer singers there (Seal, George Michael, Paul Young), Axl
SOUNDED the best in those circumstances.

I *liked* that Axl took the end of Bohemian...I mean, Elton did a good
job up to the Opera section, but his voice is not strong enough for
that end part (he even dropped some of the range in the first few
sections)...he just wasn't going to cut it. Axl wailed the ending of
Bohemian. Who do you think they should have gotten...Robert Plant or
    Gary Cherone?? * NOT! *

Also, Axl was a great choice for We Will Rock You.

Overall, I think Queen did a good job of hooking up the guest vocalists
for their respective songs. Too bad the sound was a bad as it was...I
think it could have been a much better show if the main and monitor
mixmen were more on top of it.

I don't think Axl or Elton should have sung that song.. I don't mind
Elton as much as Axl... It was funny though, My girlfriend and I were
watching it, then when the end of BR came, I said "Watch them put
Axl out there.." next thing you know..

I think he sounded like garbage and ruined the end of the song, I
would MUCH rather of heard Gary sing it.. Axl Inhaled.. IMHO!

You gotta be deaf if you think Axl sounded that good...

Jeez, this really turned into a less filling/tastes great on Axl. I think he
was great, but then who cares?

Ignoring him, (if possible) I thought that George Michael did a good job and
Annie Lennox was phenomenal. Both of them had the vocal mannerisms down. They
had spent some serious time getting ready for this one.

I thought that the drummer and Elton were having a timing war. Even the crowd
sang faster than Elton. Too bad, it wouldn't have hurt the song any to slow
it down.

I think they missed a good chance to do Keep Yourself Alive. It could have been
the theme song for the event. Maybe FOX just edited it out...

I didn't see the whole show, but I realize that Fox cut a lot out now.

Metallica did great jobs on their songs, but the crowd wasn't there to hear
Metallica songs. I didn't catch Stone Cold Crazy with James and Queen.

Extreme did really well. They did a medley of 10-12 songs that started the
crowd up.

Def Leppard did better on the other songs than Let's Get Rocked. They did
Now I'm Here which is a great tune from the early days.

Robert Plant doing Innuendo was awesome. The more I see Brian play the more
he impresses me.

Spinal Tap was funny. "We're going to cut our set 35 songs short. Freddie would
have wanted it that way"

I don't care what anyone else says. I liked David Bowie. Heroes is one of
my favorite Bowie songs. He did much better there than in Tin Machine on
Saturday Night Live.

I saw about the 1st 1 1/2 hours of it. I was impressed with Extreme.
The medley was great, although I would have changed to order of the
songs. There were a couple of songs that I thought he could have sang
better if they were the first ones. His voice would have handled them
better. But, like I said, I was impressed and think this will do a lot
    for their future.
Roger Daltry sounded.......er.........so so. I enjoyed the 3 songs
    Metallica did.
If this gets released on video, which I'm sure it will, I think I'll
    pick it up.

I saw the beginning on MTV on Sat. Metallica played well, too bad the
crowd seemed lackluster. Aack-streme sounded really well (I was
surprised!). Also interesting to see Nuno playing a Mauradian guitar
(the company Pat Badger used to work for...he plays their basses).
Looks like it was painted in that Magenta color Pat used to be so hot
about (indeed, it was a great color!).

Magenta still is a great color! (got myself a magenta color bass!)

James was great on SCC!! Didn't really know what to do with himself
without a guitar in his hands though...

839.64a note across the oceanROMSLS::GRAMIGNAMon May 25 1992 12:0150
    Hi folks!

I live and work in Roma-Italy, and unfortunately I have found jus now
this note relating to the Tribute, I liked to add my opinion when the
event was still "hot", but I read as well all your comments and I would
        like to add mine.

The entire Tribute was broadcasted "live" on a private italian TV, and
I completely saw and recorded it (about 5 hours show).

Next days I had several discussions with some friends of mine on the
show and the performances of the various singers, and I have to say
that I have found many similar topics in your replies.
Basically, I think that the biggest fault in the event interpretation
is the expectation of much people to "find" another Freddie on the
stage, or to compare his capacity to be a great performer to the
way of performing chose by all the other singers.
I love live music in every situation, playing my guitar or listening
for unknown bands in clubs and pubs, or watching great concerts
directly or by the TV, and I think that the power that comes from it
has a close relationship with the ability of the performer to
"transmit" his feelings and to be on the stage and manage many
thousands of people. The greatness of a performer is in being able to
do this, using his own style and experience and giving a personal
interpretation on his own songs rather than the ones by others.

Under these conditions, I have to say that, excluding the trush of the
first part of the show (excepting for Extreme, very good), starting
from Gun's & Roses to Liza everybody have tryed to do their best.
Many of them did it, many failed, but sometimes it was just a decision
to "assign" a wrong song to a singer in relationship to his kind of
voice and staging (i.e. Elton John has really killed "Bohemian Raphsody
and "The show must go on", but just because those weren't the right
songs for him, he did it just for prestige reasons), but my thought
is that everybody have brought their contribution for a very enjoyable
        show.

Over the personal taste that everyone of us could have in the matter
of music, an evaluation must be done of the context in which a show is
organized and the more or less important reasons it is related to.
I think that the AIDS awareness is a topic that goes beyond of the
deciding if Axel is unseenable or on who is Paul Young.
This was just a way to honour Freddie and his job and an important
occasion to make worldwide understandable the tragedy of AIDS and to
raise a warning on all the risks that everybody of us runs

        Ciao a tutti

        Antonio.
