Subject: Missouri authorities pursue Axl Rose
Date: 13 Apr 92 15:02:16 GMT

CLAYTON, Mo. (UPI) -- Authorities in St. Louis County have vowed to
serve arrest warrants on singer Axl Rose of the rock band Guns 'N'
Roses, a threat that forced cancellation of the group's concerts
scheduled for Monday and Tuesday in suburban Detroit.
Guns 'N' Roses also canceled its show Friday night in suburban
Chicago after learning that police planned to arrest Rose on charges
stemming from a disturbance last July at the band's concert in St. Louis
County.
Rose left Chicago and avoided arrest Friday night, but prosecutors in
St. Louis County said they would attempt to have him arrested the next
time he arrives for a performance. Guns 'N' Roses has canceled its shows
scheduled for Monday and Tuesday nights in Auburn Hills, Mich.
Prosecuting Attorney Robert McCulloch said Rose had been given time
to answer the charges voluntarily, but the grace period has expired.
McCulloch said his office would seek to have Rose arrested when he next
tries to perform.
Rose faces charges of assault and property damage stemming from the
July 2 disturbance at the Riverport Amphitheatre in west St. Louis
County. Authorities claim Rose struck a security guard and three
concertgoers, then damaged a dressing room before fleeing Missouri and
avoiding arrest.
Dozens of people were arrested for brawling with police and security
guards after Rose allegedly lept into the audience, fought with fans and
then abruptly left the Riverport stage. The facility, which opened last
year, sustained hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of damage.
Several concertgoers also have filed civil suits against Rose,
alleging they were injured in the melee.
Authorities in Cook County, Ill., said they were asked to enforce a
bench warrant posted by McCulloch's office. They said police contacted
the band's management Friday and gave Rose the option of surrendering
before or after the Chicago area show.
Guns 'N' Roses then canceled Friday night's concert about 30 minutes
before it was set to begin in suburban Rosemont. Police said fans
dispersed without incident.

Subject: Bomb injures 11 at heavy-metal concert
Date: Thu, 7 May 92 6:21:50 PDT

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (UPI) -- Eleven people were injured when a man tossed
a bomb into a crowd of people attending a concert by the heavy-metal
rock band Skid Row, police said.

About 4,000 people were in Wings Stadium when the device detonated
shortly after 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. Seven of the injured were treated at
Bronson Methodist Hospital, mostly for burns and lacerations, and
	released.

No one was in custody, but police said Thursday morning they were
pursuing several leads and asking concertgoers for help.

``We have some leads, but we are asking for anyone who may have any
information to assist us to call our detective bureau,'' said Lt. Robert
Simpson of the Kalamazoo Public Safety Department.

The concert resumed after the blast, but witnesses said the crowd was
unsettled and there were numerous minor disturbances. One witness said
the explosive device looked like a very large firecracker.

Subject: Deputies plan no changes in concert enforcement policies
Date: Thu, 7 May 92 6:54:43 PDT

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (UPI) -- The Linn County sheriff's department says
it has no plans to change its enforcement policies before rock concerts
	at the Five Seasons Center.

Before such concerts, sheriff's officers stake out rest areas and
radio units closer to the concert hall to stop certain vehicles.

The rock group Van Halen has lodged a protest of the targeting with
	the Iowa Civil Liberties Union.

Sgt. Rick Haendler of the Linn County sheriff's department said
Thursday the special enforcement procedures were instituted about three
years ago and there are no plans to alter them.

``The target is any type of event in the Cedar Rapids area that would
bring large groups of people who would be consuming alcohol on the
interstate or highway system into Cedar Rapids,'' he said.

Haendler also said officers give concert fans plenty of notice by
advising the media well in advance of any special concert enforcement
but many rock fans charge that the police don't use the same level of
	enforcement for large country concerts.

The director of the Five Seasons Center in Cedar Rapids said the
security problems encountered at country and rock shows are very
	similar.

Ann Larson said she compared the Van Halen concert with concerts by
	Tesla and Hank Williams Jr.

Larson said in all cases about 2 percent of the patrons were arrested
for various offenses. She said she would like to see the police scope
either widened to include more events or narrowed.

``I don't want to see the same types of shows singled out. There may
be other types of shows with problems as well,'' she said.

Van Halen pledged to do something about the situation when members
noticed the police activity on their way from the airport to the Five
Seasons Center for an April 10 show.

Subject: Court says ``Nasty'' not obscene
Date: Fri, 8 May 92 6:32:31 PDT

ATLANTA (UPI) -- A federal appeals court overturned lower court
decision by ruling that the album ``As Nasty As They Wanna Be'' by the
rap group 2 Live Crew is not obscene.

The U.S. 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, in reviewing the case
Thursday, said Broward County, Fla., Sheriff Nick Navarro failed to
provide evidence of obscenity and there had been testimony by music
critics and others as to the hit album's artistic merit.

``It's a great day,'' said an elated Luther Campbell, leader of the
group, after the decision came down.

The law says for a work to be considered obscene, it must appeal to
prurient interests of the average person, describe sexual conduct in a
patently offensive way and lack serious artistic value.

Navarro contended in the earlier Florida court case that the lyrics
	fail those tests.

But, the appeals court said that wasn't enough proof and overturned a
June, 1990 ruling by U.S. District Judge Jose Gonzalez of Fort
Lauderdale, Fla., who declared the lyrics obscene becasue of numerous
	sexual references.

Navarro twice arrested group members when they ignored the ruling.
But, both times they were acquitted.

Subject: Israeli rock band raises hackles by planning concert at Auschwitz
Date: 3 Aug 92 12:38:51 GMT

JERUSALEM (UPI) -- An Israeli rock group that left for Poland Monday
threatened to break deep taboos by playing at the Auschwitz death camp
where more than 1.5 million Jews perished at the hands of the Nazis
during World War II.
Holocaust survivors in Israel have already expressed shock over plans
by the band Duralex Sedlex to play hardcore rock and punk music at the
place where their relatives died.
``It would be a desecration of the memory of the victims,'' Auschwitz
survivor Aryeh Ben-Tov told Army Radio.
However, the issue has become further complicated by the fact that
the 26-year-old lead singer and lyricist Uri Drumer also happens to be
the son of two Holocaust survivors.
``He wants to perform a stronger piece to show what people experience
at home when they live the Holocaust almost 24 hours a day,'' Miki Katan
said. ``The Holocaust is a trauma for him.''
Until a month ago, Katan played in the Duralex Sedlex band that
Drumer founded at the age of 16.
Many of the band's lyrics deal with the Holocaust, including a song
called Zyklon B, the type of gas used in the Nazi death chambers.
The four-man band is described as a fringe group, virtually unknown
within Israel, although it has been gaining acclaim abroad. High chart
ratings on Radio Warsaw led to an invitation to participate in this
week's festival in the Polish capital.
Polish authorities may well confine Duralex Sedlex to routine
settings, preventing them from playing at Auschwitz to avoid
controversy.
``No one says they're going to let the band go there, '' Katan said.
``But for them it's a declaration of strength -- they're telling the
people who invited them that they're not coming with bowed heads.''
Duralex Sedlex's record company, Hed Artzi, stands squarely behind
them.
``It will make me very happy if they follow their feelings through to
the end,'' Yael Levy, a public relations representative said.

Subject: Nugent fined $1,000 for fire code violation
Date: Tue, 12 Jan 93 8:32:47 PST

CINCINNATI (UPI) -- Rock star Ted Nugent was fined $1,000 and
sentenced to three days in jail Tuesday for violating the city's fire
code during a concert at Cincinnati Gardens.
Nugent, 44, was arrested Monday night after the concert in which he
shot two flaming arrows across the stage during a musical act, said Sgt.
Howard Nichols.
Nichols said the singer was charged with a violation of the fire code
which reads: ``No person shall smoke or use an open flame in any place
where the fire chief orders the posting of no smoking signs or the use
of audio or visual notification that smoking or use of an open flame is
prohibited.''
Nugent pleaded no contest to the charge Tuesday during an appearance
before a Hamilton County Municipal Court judge, who found him guilty and
ordered a $1,000 fine and a 3-day jail sentence.
The judge credited him for one day in jail for time served before he
as released on bond early Tuesday, and suspended the remaining two days.

BURBANK, Calif. (UPI) -- Controversial rapper Ice-T, whose song ``Cop
Killer'' sparked police protests around the nation, has been given an
unconditional release from his contract with Sire/Warner Bros. Records.
Sire/Warner Bros. said in a statement that the action came ``by
mutual agreement.''
Chairman Mo Ostin said ``We believe that this is the best way to
resolve our creative differences.''
Ice-T provoked a firestorm of protest last year from police groups
and others when he released the song ``Cop Killer,'' which dealt with
killing police officers.
Many called for a boycott of the label's parent, Time Warner Inc.,
and Gerald M. Levin, Time Warner's co-chief executive officer and
president, had to defend the song on First Amendment grounds at an
acrimonious shareholders' meeting last July.
A column written by Dallas officer Glenn White in a police newsletter
last May led to the boycott. White said ``I think Time Warner finally
realized what they had to do.''
Ice-T, who insisted his song did not advocate violence, ultimately
pulled ``Cop Killer'' from his album, saying he wanted to defuse attacks
on Time Warner and refute statements that he had been profiting from the
controversy. He then gave away free single-disc versions of ``Cop
Killer'' at his concerts.
On Thursday, Ostin did not explain the reasons for releasing Ice-T
from his contract. But a story in the Hollywood Reporter said the split
may have stemmed from a dispute between Ice-T and Sire/Warner Bros. over
the proposed cover art for the artist's upcoming album, ``Home Invasion.
''
Ice-T had been scheduled to release ``Home Invasion'' next month, but
the release date was pushed back to March.

PHILADELPHIA (UPI) -- The Drug Enforcement Administration said Friday
two members of the heavy metal band ``Slaughter'' have been arrested and
charged with delivering cocaine to Pennsylvania.
Sam Billbrough, head of the DEA office in Philadelphia, said Timothy
Patrick Kelly, 30, a guitarist with the band, and tour manager Scott
Cadwallader, 27, both of Henderson, Nev., were arrested Thursday in Las
Vegas.
They were charged with conspiracy to distribute cocaine, distribution
of cocaine and aiding and abetting the distribution of cocaine. If
convicted, they face a minimum of five years in jail and fines of up to
$2 million.
The indictment returned in Philadelphia Dec. 8, 1992, and only
unsealed recently, said Kelly and Cadwallader were responsible for
delivering 1 kilogram of cocaine to Gary Degennaro of Levittown in 1987.
Degennaro was convicted on drug charges and sentenced to five years in
prison.
Billbrough said the pair allegedly are part of a smuggling ring that
carried cocaine from California to other parts of the United States.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (UPI) -- Guitarist Dickie Betts of the Allman
Brothers Band was due in court Tuesday after being charged with shoving
and cursing city police officers during a dispute with his wife after a
concert.
Police said Betts, 49, got into an argument with his wife, Donna, at
their hotel room in Saratoga Springs Saturday morning. The Allman
Brothers played a concert at Saratoga Performing Arts Center Friday
night.
``When the officers arrived, his wife asked us to stand by while she
retrieved some of her personal articles,'' said Lt. Lynn Thomas of the
Saratoga Springs City Police.
``When (Betts) was asked to step aside by the officers, he refused,''
Thomas said. ``We were there to assist her. He refused to let her leave
the room.''
Betts then used ``abusive language'' and shoved one of the officers,
Thomas said.
``Apparently he had been drinking,'' Thomas said.
Betts' attorney, Michael Tooley, declined to comment.
Betts, a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, led the group
along with Greg Allman after the 1971 death of Duane Allman in a
motorcycle accident.
The group was a pioneer of the ``Southern rock'' style popular in the
1970s. Its best-known song, ``Ramblin' Man,'' reached No. 2 on the
Billboard singles chart in 1973.
Betts was due in Saratoga Springs City Court Tuesday morning to
answer the charges.
Saratoga Springs is about 180 miles north of New York City.

Subject: Tapes suggest plot against Jackson
Date: Tue, 31 Aug 93 16:23:05 PDT

LOS ANGELES (UPI) -- A secretly recorded telephone conversation said
to be with the father of a 13-year-old boy who has accused pop star
Michael Jacksonof molestation warned of a ``massacre if I don't get what
I want.''
The voices on the tapes were identified Tuesday by unnamed Los
Angeles Times sources as the father of the boy who has accused Jackson
of sexually molesting him, and the boy's stepfather.
``There will be a massacre if I don't get what I want,'' said the
father, a Beverly Hills dentist, in 80 minutes of apparently edited
telephone conversations.
The Times said the tapes do not contain a specific request of Jackson
or detail allegations against him. The dentist demanded to meet with
Jackson, the child and the boy's mother.
The father appeared to be threatening to go public with allegations.
``Once I make that phone call, Michael's career will be over,'' he
said.
Jackson's private investigator, Anthony Pellicano, has said the
molestation allegations stemmed from an extortion attempt gone awry.
Neither the dentist nor his attorney would return phone calls
Tuesday.
The Los Angeles Police Department, exploring the accusations of
molestation, refused to say whether the tapes were part of their
investigation.
The District Attorney's Office also has refused to comment on any
aspect of the case, saying it remains in the hands of police.
Jackson, meanwhile, was expected to return to the stage in Singapore
Wednesday, giving the performance he postponed Monday because of a
migraine attack.
It was the third concert in a week the superstar canceled citing
illness. He twice postponed performances in Bangkok saying he suffered
from acute dehydration.
Pellicano, in interviews with the Times, has made detailed
allegations that the father wanted $20 million out of Jackson to start a
film production company. When Pellicano and Jackson refused, the father
shouted at Jackson, ``You're going to be sorry, Michael. This is not the
last you're going to hear from me.
``If I don't get what I want, Michael, I'm going to run to the press.
I'm going to ruin you,'' Pellicano said, quoting the father in an Aug. 4
meeting.
Pellicano instead offered $350,000, a standard price for a one-movie
development deal. On Aug. 17, Pellicano received a letter from the
father's attorney turning down that offer.
The same day, the boy was interviewed for three hours by a therapist,
who in turn reported molestation allegations to authorities as he is
obligated to do under state law.
Pellicano, asked why he did not report any alleged extortion attempt
to the police before the molestation accusations arose, says he prefers
to handle such matters himself without involving the police.

Subject: Wal-Mart not carrying Nirvana album

BENTONVILLE, Ark. (UPI) -- Retail giant Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said
Thursday it has decided not to carry grunge-rock band Nirvana's new
album because of concerns it might clash with some customer's moral
standards.
The much-awaited Geffen Records release, titled ``In Utero,'' began
selling in a limited vinyl-album edition last week and on compact disc
Tuesday.
The CD is expected to be a No. 1 performer by next week on the
Billboard music chart.
The album includes a song titled ``Rape Me,'' although the lyrics
appear to refer more to the idea of the figurative rape of an artist
rather than to an act of sexual violence.
The cover and features an anatomical diagram of a woman, much like
what might be found in a medical book or science textbook, on the front
cover and models of human embryos on the back. The inside art shows the
burned-out interior of a Republican Party office following the Los
Angeles riots.
A spokesman for the chain said that the decision not to carry the CD
reflects Wal-Mart's policy of being ``sensitive to the moral standards
our customers have.'' Each Wal-Mart carries about 3,500 CD titles.
The spokesman also noted that Wal-Mart's customers tend to prefer
country-and-western titles. ``They tend to lean more heavily towards
Garth Brooks and Vince Gill,'' he said.
	The record is a follow-up to Seattle-based Nirvana's highly
successful ``Nevermind'' debut album, which went quadruple platinum by
selling more than 4 million copies. A number of chains, such as Tower
Records, have reported strong early sales of ``In Utero.''
Wal-Mart, of Bentonville, Ark., is the nation's No. 1 retailer with
1992 sales of $55.5 billion. Most of its stores are located outside
major urban areas.

Subject: Guns N' Roses, ex-drummer settle lawsuit
Date: Fri, 24 Sep 93 18:23:21 PDT

LOS ANGELES (UPI) -- The rock band Guns N' Roses and two managers
agreed Friday to a $2.5 million settlement in lawsuit that contended
their former drummer had been unfairly cut out of the band's profits.
The settlement was reached just days before the Los Angeles Superior
Court jury would have begun deliberations.
Attorney David Chodos said his client, Steven Adler, will receive
$150,000 from the band's former manager, Alan Niven, $50,000 from his
successor, Douglas Goldstein, and the balance from Guns N' Roses.
Chodos said Adler, 28, never disputed the band's right to drop him as
their drummer because his heroin addiction made him unreliable. He is
undergoing treatment.
Adler's case sought to invalidate a document he signed under
pressure, giving up most of his rights to financial benefits as a
departing partner.
Guns N' Roses was recently ranked fourth in the Forbes magazine list
of top show business earners, with 1992-93 income of $53 million.

Subject: Critics cool to Madonna's flamboyant show
Date: Sun, 26 Sep 93 3:23:51 PDT

LONDON (UPI) -- The launch of Madonna's world tour ``Girlie Show''
before 70,000 fans at Wembley Stadium has left many critics unimpressed
with the star's ability to break new ground in the fickle arena of pop.
Although fans left the London stadium late Saturday raving about
Madonna's ambitious show, which involved a 15-strong team of musicians
and topless dancers, flamboyant costume changes and numerous references
to sex, the British media responded in a decidedly cool fashion.
When Madonna was last in Britain in July 1990 with her sell-out
``Blonde Ambition'' tour fans camped outside her hotel day and night
while her every move attracted front-page attention.
This time there were no crowds at the airport when Madonna flew in
Tuesday and only a handful of fans have appeared outside the hotel where
the 35-year star is staying.
Despite Madonna's stage routines late Saturday providing a range of
colorful pictures for the British press, the accompanying words were far
from jubilant.
``Immaterial girl struggles to shock anew,'' The Sunday Times
headline proclaimed with the accompanying commentary that ``the problem
is that her audience is simply not that easy to shock any more.''
The Mail on Sunday devoted a full-page splash outlining ``Why
parading the stage in costume changes can no longer save her career,''
and the more downmarket The People ran the story front page Sunday with
a ``What a Shocker'' headline. The story also carried a full-length
photograph of Madonna wearing knee-length boots, fishnets and sequined
bra standing over a half-naked dancer who was either in a state of joy
or pain depending on perspective.
For the critics it was a case of challenging the pop's stars
tradition throughout her 10 year career of going further than before.
``I'm not interested in preaching to the converted,'' Madonna was
quoted as saying in an interview with The Sunday Times. ``So basically I
am going to the places where I have the most enemies. That is why I am
starting in London.''
Although the two-night two-hour show has sold out on the opening
British leg of the world tour, some ticket touts were forced to reduce
the cover price of their 27.50 pound ($41) tickets to 15 pounds ($22).
``The rain has killed it,'' one ticket seller told reporters. ``And
she keeps her clothes on this time, doesn't she?''

Subject: Material girl to bed down in Jerusalem

JERUSALEM (UPI) -- Madonna, the provocative pop star whose Girlie Show
tour promises to shock audiences around the world, has decided to sleep
in Jerusalem when she comes to Israel next month because she wants to be
near the holy sites, a spokeswoman said Monday.
She will fly back and forth to Tel Aviv for the Oct. 5 concert by a
helicopter that will land on the roof of the King David Hotel.
``She prefers to be in Jerusalem to be near the sacred places because
she is Catholic,'' spokeswoman Andi Schutz said.
News that the Material Girl was headed for the Holy Land has alarmed
Israel's religious community. Rabbis have demanded that she be forced to
tone down her act, which includes topless dancers.
But the controversial pop star plans to deliver the same performance
she is giving audiences in Europe, Asia and Australia, replete with
scantily-clothed dancers and her crotch-grabbing moves.
``With (the American band) Guns 'N Roses we had the same reaction,''
said Schutz. ``It's just a difference of opinion. There will be
shouting, but they are not going to stop the show.''
Madonna and her 117-person entourage will arrive in Israel from
Germany for one performance in Tel Aviv's Yarkon Park, which has sold
80,000 seats at $30 to $49 a pop.
The concerts have been selling out as fast around the globe. In
London and Paris, tickets sold out for two shows each in less than three
hours and in Australia 100,000 tickets for a November concert sold out
in one day.
Bringing her show to Israel, complete with a 300-ton stage, 45-foot-
long (15-meter) runway into the audience and security, will cost $3.5
million. After Israel she will continue her tour in Istanbul.

Date: Mon, 27 Sep 93 14:16:29 PDT

NEW YORK (UPI) -- A Roman Catholic rights organization has asked Mayor
David Dinkins to remove bus and phone booth ads that show a picture of
pop singer Madonna alongside one of the Virgin Mary and infant Jesus.
William Donohue, president of the Catholic Leage for Religious and
Civil Rights, said Monday that he fired off two complaints to Dinkins
late last week but has not received a reply.
He said he also has complained to the Metropolitan Tranportation
Authority, which operates city buses.
``If we tried to put a picure of our blessed mother and Jesus on the
side of a bus, it would be rejected because it would be endorsing
religion, but if it is used with Madonna in a form of blasphemy, it is
acceptable,'' he said.
``Suddenly, it becomes freedom of speech. The double standard is an
outrage!''
The ad was placed with the MTA by VH1, a sister network of cable
video music channel MTV. On the left side is a picture of Madonna and on
the right Raphael's familiar ``Madonna and Child.''
In between the two images is a caption reading, ``The difference
between you and your parents.''
``We tried to find out who in the MTA approved the Madonna poster,''
Donohoe said. ``They would not tell us. But there's a lot of anti-
Catholicism out there.''
Donohoe said he did not blame VH1.
``You don't expect them to behave responsibly but you do expect the
MTA to use better judgment,'' he said. ``When I called them, they told
me they don't make value judgments, but that's not true. They don't, for
instance, carry tobacco ads.''
The Catholic League was established about 20 years ago as a watchdog
group and is the nation's largest Catholic civil rights organization,
although it has no formal relationship to the Roman Catholic Church. It
is sometimes likened to the Anti-Defamation League, a Jewish watchdog
group.
``The MTA would never have allowed Madonna to uses buses to blaspheme
Jewish beliefs, blacks or gays,'' Donohue charged. ``Catholics are not
portrayed with the same respect and dignity of other groups.''

Welfare isn't half the story. The grandfather has been sipping food
through a straw the past 5 years because he needed dentures and couldn't
afford them. On top of that, he lived in county hospital here and was
on the ACCESS medical program (state-paid medical).

As wealthy as they are, they could've paid someone to take care of Mr.
Jackson's father. They totally ignored this guy. Only Tito and one of
the other older brothers even showed for the funeral. This sure has
lowered my already low opinion of this "family."

Subject: Former security guards: Jackson ordered nude photo destroyed

LOS ANGELES (UPI) -- Pop superstar Michael Jackson -- who is under
criminal investigation for alleged child molestation -- ordered a former
security guard to destroy an incriminating photo that showed a young boy
posing nude, the guard charged Monday in a televised report.
Leroy Thomas, who worked at the Jackson family's Encino estate, told
NBC's ``Hard Copy'' that Jackson once called him in the middle of the
night to order him to destroy the photo of a boy who appeared to be
between 10 and 14 years old.
Thomas is one of five former security guards who claim in a civil
lawsuit that they were fired because they knew too much about Jackson's
alleged nocturnal visits with young boys.
Jackson has been under criminal investigation since a 13-year-old boy
alleged that he was molested by the entertainer.
Jackson, who left for a worldwide tour in August, has not been seen
publicly since confessing to an addiction to pain killers. His lawyers
have said Jackson is seeking help at a health care facility outside of
the United States.
Jackson's personal attorney, Bert Fields, denied the guards' claims
that they were fired because they knew too much about the singer's
encounters with young boys. Jackson's criminal attorney, Howard
Weitzman, called the guards' suit ``bogus.''

Subject: Mozart's illness identified by OSU researchers
Lines: 70

COLUMBUS, Ohio (UPI) -- Ohio State University researchers say the
fainting and severe headaches Mozart suffered before his death at 35
were probably caused by a pocket of blood on his brain -- not by being
poisoned by his arch rival Salieri, as one legend has it.
The composer probably suffered from a chronic subdural hematoma,
according to Miles Drake, an OSU neurologist. Evidence from the skull
purported to be Mozart's suggests that a fracture of the left temporal
bone, probably the result of a fall, could have caused the slow leakage
of blood onto the brain.
Drake said the cause of Mozart's odd sickness has been a mystery for
some time, leaving scholars debating whether he may have suffered from
infection, fever, tuberculosis or some brain lesion.
Applying modern knowledge of neurological disease to the 200-year-old
debate, Drake, an associate professor of neurology and psychiatry at
Ohio State, has described the condition that, had Mozart been alive
today, could have been diagnosed after a few routine CAT scans.
Drake's work, recently published in the journal Neurology, helps
settle the controversy about the musician's demise in late 1791 and
explains some of the composer's extreme and odd behavior in his final
months.
The composer's problems probably started with a fall, said Drake. The
most obvious sign of Mozart's hematoma is a healed fracture of his skull
that seems to have dated back to 1790 or early 1791. Drake said that is
a time when historical records suggest that Mozart was becoming more and
more fond of beer, wine and punch.
``His letters to friends talk of frequent falls, probably linked to
his drinking.'' Also, the area of his fracture -- just between the left
eye and left ear -- is a common site for trauma among drinkers given to
falls, Drake added.
There were many signs of neurologic disease in the last 18 months or
so of his life. At one point he became hypersensitive and intolerant to
the singing of his beloved canary and had to have it removed from his
room. He also increasingly suffered from some of the characteristic
symptoms of a subdural hematoma, including mild to severe headaches,
progressive weakness, convulsions and paralysis, vomiting, fluctuating
changes in consciousness and changes in vision.
From Mozart's personal letters, Drake found that the musician had
become more and more of a recluse. At one point Mozart wrote to a friend
that he could not visit because his headaches were so bad that ``my head
is covered with bandages.''
His work on one of his last operas, The Magic Flute, was interrupted
by fainting spells and he was not able to attend the opening night
performance of the opera. In 1791, while working on the famous Requiem
that his assistant had to complete for him, he suffered vomiting,
headache and weakness, followed by convulsions and coma.
In determining Mozart's condition, Drake studied the detailed
analysis of Mozart's skull conducted by scientists in the last several
decades. Though Drake has not seen the skull itself, the evidence on
hand helped him to pinpoint the specific cause of the composer's
symptoms.
Besides the healed fracture, there is also some nearby erosion on the
inner layer of the skull, suggesting a growing pocket of blood pooling
over the brain. The once-common practice of bloodletting -- in which a
small amount of blood is drained from the body -- may have reduced the
size of the hematoma intermittently, but it's difficult to know, Drake
said.
The OSU researcher said it's also difficult to determine the final
cause of Mozart's death. Fevers and infections could have contributed to
his demise, or, Drake said, his doctors may have literally bled him to
death.
The evidence Drake draws on comes from studies of the skull believed
to be Mozart's, although, because the composer was buried in an unmarked
grave, there is no way to prove that it was his. The skull, which is
kept in a museum devoted to Mozart in Salzburg, was identified by the
descendants of Mozart's gravedigger and has been passed down through the
years.
Anthropologists who have used clay to reconstruct the skull's face
have found that it closely resembles portraits and descriptions of
Mozart. Also, evidence of pockmarked teeth coincide with reports that
the musician incessantly picked his teeth with toothpicks.

Subject: Rare Turkey Returns To Arizona
Date: Sun, 13 Feb 94 10:00:33 PST
Lines: 67

WILLCOX, Ariz. (AP) -- A century after their ancestors disappeared
from this country, a small flock of Labounty's turkeys is roaming the
oak-dotted highlands of the Galiuro Mountains.
Twenty-one of the birds were trapped in Mexico and freed in hopes
they'll multiply and re-establish a population all but wiped out by
subsistence hunting and diseases spread by domestic fowl.
The release is part of a national effort that's helped the wild turkey
population in the United States rebound from 30,000 at the turn of the century
to 4 million today. The birds were released Feb. 2 by biologists from the
state Game and Fish Department with the help of the National Wild Turkey
Federation, a hunting and conservation group based in Edgefield, S.C.
``Turkeys are back,'' said Rob Keck, the federation's executive
director. ``The wild turkey has been part of our tradition and our heritage.''
The release of Labounty's turkeys, one of five native American
subspecies, capped a dozen years of efforts by the federation and officials in
Arizona and Mexico, where there is a sizable population of the birds.
A day after release, one male became a bobcat's brunch and two others
that couldn't handle the ordeal of capture and transport were killed by
researchers to be tested for disease. A favorable ratio of 12 hens to six
males remains, according to Ron Olding, a wildlife biologist with the state
Game and Fish Department. He coordinated the transplant.
Now the 18 surviving birds, set free in oak-woodland habitat 5,500
feet up in the Galiuro Mountain range northeast of Tucson, have to do their
part.
Although a hen typically lays 10 to 15 eggs, the eggs and young birds
are eaten by skunks, hawks and other predators, Olding said. Each adult is
fitted with a radio transmitter so biologists can track them for up to three
years.
``A lot is going to hinge on how well they do this first year,'' Olding
said.
In the early 1980s, two attempts were made to reintroduce the bird in
the Huachuca Mountains of southeast Arizona. Some interbred with the more
abundant Flattery's turkey, of which Arizona has several thousand.
``A not-quite-pure strain of Labounty's established in the Huachucas
apparently,'' Olding said. But he said some still display the Labounty's
distinctive white-tipped brown tail feathers.
The only other known viable Labounty's flock in this country consists
of 100 to 150 in the Peloncillo Mountains, along the New Mexico-Arizona state
line. That flock's habitat lies mostly in New Mexico.
The 21 new birds were trapped with nets about 200 miles south of the
Mexican border in the Sierra Madre.
The hope is that the new colony will survive and hatch a stable
population which can then be used to repopulate new areas. If the birds thrive,
hunting could eventually be allowed, Game and Fish officials say.
The federation is dedicated to the conservation of the American wild
turkey, found in every state but Alaska, and to the turkey-hunting tradition.
Wild turkeys occupy more habitat than any other game species, and
turkey hunting is a $600 million business, with some 350,000 bagged yearly.

Subject: Pearl Jam's Vedder Says he Feels Suicidal

LOS ANGELES (Reuter) - Just weeks after the suicide of
Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain, his counterpart in another
popular Seattle band, Pearl Jam, revealed Sunday he too had
thought of killing himself.
Eddie Vedder, whose band led the ``grunge'' revolution along
with Nirvana, said in a Los Angeles Times interview that he
empathized with Cobain.
``When I was around 15 or 16, those kind of thoughts (of
suicide) came as often as mealtime, you know. I felt all alone
... I was alone -- except for music,'' he told the paper.
``Then things got better. I got a job and looked back on
those times and wondered how I could have ever felt that way. I
thought about all the music and all the experiences I would have
missed if I had acted on those feelings ...
``But you know there have been times over the past couple of
years when those feelings came back.''
While Cobain dealt with the ``spokesman for a generation''
pressures by taking to drugs and eventually shooting himself in
the head last month, Vedder is famously volatile.
He often performs with his back to the audience, but also
tries to help his fans individually and gets overwhelmed in the
process. Vedder told the Times that when he learned about
Cobain's death, he trashed his Washington D.C. hotel room and
then felt better.

That's why I never read anything about him. Seems like most of the
