    Will soon findout.............................///
657.3AD::FLATTERYThu Dec 19 1991 13:306
...they're another band out of Seattle...they've been getting alot of
play due to the recent success of several of that cities
bands....they're not remotely close to being a "poseur" (as so many
like to overuse) band.....i can't really categorize them, so i'll
    leave that to someone else.........../k

657.4ooops - note collison with /k!DPE::STARRDreams only bring sorrow.....Thu Dec 19 1991 13:3410
The band's name is actually Pearl Jam (one "m"). They are NOT a poseur
band at all!!! They're quite good, as a matter of fact. They're from the
Seattle area, and rose out of the ashes of two bands up there (Mother
Love Bone, and one other one I forget).

The album is very cool, one of my favorites of the year. I know some noters
in here (Paul?) saw them open for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, so maybe we
can get a review from them?

alan
657.5in fact, poseur-lovers probably wouldn't like itGOES11::G_HOUSETommy The CatThu Dec 19 1991 13:4211
Yeah, to echo what other people have been saying, they are definately
NOT a poseur outfit, more like heavy alternative in my way of thinking.

I know Paul has met them and said he enjoyed their show with the RHCPs
recently. He also has their album, but I'll let him post his own
    review...

I've seen a video by them recently and thought it was very good (the
music, who cares about the video).

MLB album is worth buying. It is good. Lead singer OD'ed.
Pearl Jam is definetly worth buying.

    	Re: Jim Z.

I'm pretty sure Pearl Jam is ex-members of Mother Love Bone and
    Temple of the Dog.

    	Re: Greg

Actually, it wasn't me who met them but my "friend" from Newbury
Comics. 8^) BTW, I don't think she works there anymore. 8^( She
mentioned the band drove around the city with food to give to the
    homeless.

Unfortunately, I only heard a few songs from PJ when they played
with RHCP. What I heard was good though so I got the cd. It's
excellent! The lyrics cover some serious topics but aren't too
depressing or overloaded with PC'ness. I'm terrible at describing a
band's sound but... music is hard r&r/singer has a cool soulful
    style.

I have heard Pearl Jam *A LOT* on Mtv.

The song being played is called 'Alive', personally I don't like it.
People say that they are the next 'Nirvana' (A Alternative/Heavy group
that becomes popular overnight).

I don't know about that... Then again I don't care for Nirvana that
much either.

But Pearl Jam and Nirvana are too alternative for my tastes...

The only reason Pearl Jam is being labeled "alternative" is 'cause
they're from Seattle, me thinks. IMO, they don't have an "alternative"
    sound.

TEMPLE OF THE DOG is a colabiration between PEARL JAM and SOUNDGARDEN.

The lead singers of SOUNDGARDEN and MOTHER LOVE BONE were college
roommates, I think. PEARL JAM is the ex-members of MOTHER LOVE
    BONE.

That's why they formed TEMPLE OF THE DOG for that one album.

I really like Pearl Jam's lyrics. They say something, or paint a
picture for you without getting into the same tired cliches that a lot
of bands use, overuse, and keep using. There are some pretty strong
    social statements in 'em too.

Perhaps some of their words are influenced by illegal substances, but I
wouldn't say that's required to write this sort of thing. I know that
I've written some things in a similar style in the past and I didn't
have any drugs to "help" me. I write most of my material first thing
in the morning, and some of it's real weird. Definately no drugs
involved (except maybe a few sips of coffee).

	PJ has the Seatle sound...

The only Seatle group I know that doesn't is QR!!!

Some of you will also be saying North Carolina sucks (or maybe it does
already and I missed it!) some day.

Some of the comments sound as ridiculous as some of the people who
might think "Lets get Rocked" is representative of ALL metal (just
using that as an example, not picking on that song) or simply saying
all metal is the same. Would any of you consider these ignorant
	statements?

I think I know what is meant by a particular sound coming out of an
area so this could make where someone is from some what meaningful but
I don't think this implies that they all sound the same, sure they
may have more in common than being from the same area and the fact
some bands are made up from members from other bands matters.

Monkeywrench for example, is made up of folks from Mudhoney and some
other folks (forget) but they sound more like a revamped Yardbirds
	to me than Seattle sound/style.

I like Pearl Jam a lot, no matter where they're from. Nice to hear
that Friz and I actually agree on something for a change.

I can't see all the "competation" about music, Kurt Cobain's comments
about Pearl Jam are a perfect example of that and I think it sucks.
Maybe he doesn't like their music, and that's fine, but saying you
don't like a band because of their business ethic is really nasty. He
thinks Pearl Jam is jumping on a bandwagon and compromising their sound
to sell more albums and I completely disagree. PJ has a LOT of
intensity in their music, it just kind of seeths with it. I heard some
songs by Green River (the band that most of the members of PJ were in
before PJ) and they sounded very similar.

But Friz, I do think that just because someone you don't like said he
didn't like an album is a pretty p*ss poor reason for buying it.

I wonder though how much of the comments are just plain b.s. -
like his saying how much he dislikes the Melvins on a radio
interview which is simply B.S. They opened for them on their
last tour (not that it means anything - it seems Sweredriver/
Soundgarden camps aren't necessarily assisting one another
or more possibly their managements.) Also, he made one of
his first demos with Buzz and supposedly this is the person
who turned him on to music other than that of which was easily
	accessible in some areas.

    to see it.

I thought they sounded great! Nice to see *someone* come onto
Unplugged and do a *completely* acoustic set. No vocal processing, no
background singers, no string section, no semi-hollow body electric
guitars, no horns, no schlock...just a couple of acoustic guitars, an
acoustic bass, drums and dry vocals.

It's definately about an abused/mistreated kid, picked on a lot, that
does something dramatic, but I never quite got the whole picture (if
indeed they tell you the whole story).

Seattle used to be known (and is still frequently referred to)
as the "Jet City" due to the fact that Boeing Aircraft has a

When the "greens" started getting more influence they decided that
Jet City was not a nice name for an environmentally conscious city,

images of cleanliness and green, hence "Emerald City"

When I was in Williamsburg VA this past weekend, we all went out for

crayons at each table, so when the check came, I found myself doodling
with them. Ended up I had drawn this little kid with his arms in the
air, so I wrote over it "Arms raised in a V". This got me to thinking,
so I also drew a "Lemon yellow sun" (marked for those not in the know),
and a bunch of dead people in pools of maroon below. Basically writing
the lyrics to Jeremy with accompanying illustrations next to the lyrics.

I just got a Christmas single from Pearl Jam which is pretty interesting.
It's a vinyl 45 - the photo on the front shows a dead deer laying on the
side of a highway, with the title "Who Killed Rudolph?" along the bottom.

The A-side has a pretty cool version of The Dead Boy's classic song "Sonic
Reducer". Very punkish version, recorded live in the studio.

The B-side is *very* strange. It's a montage of sound clips, everything
from movies to Christmas songs to politicians to the band members talking.
Very weird, very funny!

Did anyone catch a new clip on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction

Vedder singing Doors songs with the rest of the surviving members. MTV
news showed only about a minute of the jam but I would have like to
seen more. Do they ever release a video of those Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame awards shows? Are they ever shown on T.V. in full? I think that
the Doors jam would be great to have. I'm surprized that Radio stations
have not jumped on it a little and started playing it - unauthorized
like they did when Aerosmith went on SNL to do Wayne's World and sang
the theme. (Not that I'm comparing the two - the Doors thing with Eddie

um... not to sound like i think i know everything, but... before the
release date was scheduled, the album had been tentitively titled
'five against one' (a lyrical tidbit from the song 'animal') then
prior to the first pressing the band decided to change the title
without having one in mind... so the pressing went on with the
album having no title at all... then the idea for 'verses' (or
'vurses' could be the case) came about, but it will only make it
on the second and other successive pressings. i would assume that
the reason the price tag says VS on it is just to catagorize the
lp by the new tentitive name... could be wrong...

Looks like the Pearl Jam album is going to be HUGE! I talked to a friend of
mine who runs a small store in Keene, NH, and he says he already sold out of
all 50 copies of the CD in under 5 hours (he usually might sell 30 copies of
a really hot CD in one week). Tower Records last night in NYC opened up at
midnight to sell the disk, and they sold out of all 800 copies they had in
less than an hour!!! This thing is just *flying* out the doors of the records
stores.....

I heard that Sony shipped like 2 million copies, and already people are
worried that there might be a supply problem!

Yeah, it should be huge. My younger brother has already pronounced it bad (too
commercial he claims), which means it's success should be legendary.

By the way he really liked the new Nirvana album. I wonder if that will make it
sell terribly.

Got it yesterday afternoon... After first playback I thought it was
good but, after listening to it agian I would say excellent.

Its definatly diffrent then "Ten". They have incorporated a bunch of
new styles on the CD. In general I don't think this album is as heavy
guitar style oriented as the first.

If you liked the first album you will definatly like this one.

Also a really good article in this weeks TIME Magazine about Pearl Jam and
the whole alternative music scene. Goes into how alot of the performers
are having a problem being popular and making the big money that goes with
    being a star.

and Verses but they kept playing stuff that aren't on either, in fact
Eddie kept saying "I know you guys never heard that song and you

Yeah, heard on the radio (about a hundred times...) that last night's

Those University staff folks could be facing a student uprising.

I went to school at Rutgers in NJ. This was shortly after Bruce
Springsteen struck it big with "Born to Run".

Bruce REQUESTED to play a show at the recently built indoor arena
but the show got cancelled because the basketball coach refused to
move ONE regular practice to another equally suitable gym. His reason
was because he didn't want to set a precedent for silly rock concerts
disrupting important basketball activities. The show never happened.

    BIG mistake!!!!!!!!!

To say he had underestimated the importance of Springsteen is to give
him even more credit than he deserved.

The entire school boycotted the next couple of games. I heard that
at one game there was like 15 people rooting for our team, and
about 250 people from our opponents!!!! And this was a home game.

I remember having dinner with one of the guys on the team and he was
saying how humiliating that was and how the team was really on the
coach to publicly apologize and beg people to "come back".

Seems like Pearl Jam is about as popular now as Springsteen was back
    then.

The differences that I heard and seen were between Eddie and security,
At one point Eddie stopped the show and had the lights turned on, He
then proceeded to yell at a couple of security guards that were
escorting a person out of the pit. It was really funny, he told them
to leave the pit and leave the person alone. When the Guards didn't
want to leave Eddie had his own people go get the guards out of the
pit. Earlier in the show he took the headset from one of the guards
and told him that He didn't like the headset because it represented
control, he them proceeded to throw the headset into the crowd, two
people behind me (oh so close). Thats what I saw happening, I heard
that Eddie was upset because security wouldn't let people get a good
pit going. Every time somebody got on top of the crowd the guards
came and escorted them out. This is just what I saw happening, I
don't know if that is the real reason that they postponed the show or
not but thats what it sounds Like.

657.290Live concert on CD-singles.ELIS::BOERENNot yet awake, but always smiling!Wed May 25 1994 11:3710
Here in Holland, the first part of a live-concert from Atlanta is for
sale now, on CD-single. Only about $8.
Part two will feature a new single and part two of the concert, and
part three will also contain a new single and the last part of the
    concert.

Anything known about this in the States, and if so, is part two or

ayup... i noticed this at newbury comics just the other night.
it is the live show that was on the radio broadcast 04/03/94
from fox theater in atlanta... what i saw was the cd single
of 'dissident' along with two live cd's making up the first
set of that particular atlanta show... so it's three cd's in
all for (i think) $12... that is a steal if you are a fan.

i can only assume that the next second set and way long encore
set will be released over the next two single releases... that
may seem like it could take some time, but judging by the rate
the put out singles (and the supposed new album) you may be able
to get the whole show by the middle of summer...

i didn't bother to buy the cd, i have the whole show on cassette.
having it on disc would be nice, but it's no biggee to me...

You say the first part was a single PLUS two live CD's??
    And two more to come?

Over here, the first part is also the single Dissident + 6 or 7 live
songs. The second will be the new single + part two of the concert, and
the third another single + part three. They will all fit into the same
box, about the size of an old double-CD.

You say the total concert (three singles) will come to $12?
That's cheap! Over here the first single costs about $8.
The other two will be the same prize, I guess!

About the concert having been on the radio:
I live in Europe, Holland to be precise, and over here, unfortunately,
it hasn't been broadcasted on the radio. :(

I guess I'll have to buy the 3 parts. Well, there's nothing wrong with
that. I guess the whole pack will set me back almost $25. About 45
dutch guilders. That's not that much for a live CD + 3 singles.
A normal CD costs about 42 dutch guilders, about $23.
How much is a regular full-price CD over there?

yes, the single for dissident plus two live cd's making
up part 1 of 3 parts for the live show to be released

i also saw it packaged this way, however i don't think this
is part 1 of 3 parts for the live show, possibly but i doubt it.
just a different package with some bonus live songs. i have
actually seen the 'dissident' single packaged three ways:

1 - the normal single plus two bonus songs
2 - a maxi single with six live songs
3 - a mega (my term) single with two live cd's (part 1 of 3)

>> You say the total concert (three singles) will come to $12?

>> The other two will be the same prize, I guess!

uh, nope... that's not what i meant to get across... the current
mega single (my number 3 above) is $12-$13 right now... not all
	  three parts together.

Then the US edition must be different than the European version.
Cause the first part here was a combination of your number 2 and 3.
It was only 1 CD, but is to be fit into a three-pack forming the entire

Will they have the same stuff, I mean 1 CD-single + live CD's?
Or is that the entire three-pack in one?

The whole thing was about ticketmasters surcharge on tickets. This
money is used by ticketmaster to provide services for the band and
venue. Pearl Jam wanted no surcharge. No venue would take them without
    the services provided by ticketmaster.

The whole thing was a media manipulation ploy that failed. Most fans

To clarify, MOST venues COULD NOT take Pearl Jam, due to contractual
agreements with Ticketmaster. It is not that they would not take them.
Ticketmaster controls about 70% of the venues in the country, so not
    all of them were affected.

Amusement Business magazine has given extensive coverage of the Pearl
Jam/Ticketmaster fight. From their perspective, the band is (still)
well respected in the industry for doing what they did. I mean, just
because Ticketmaster has a monopoly on the ticket sale market DOES NOT
MEAN they have the right to add $4 - $15 worth on surcharges PER TICKET
if and when they deem necessary.

If the venues don't get the services they are used to getting from
Ticketmaster, I can't blame them for not taking Pearl Jam.

The whole thing was explained to me from someone who works at corporate
at Ticketmaster, so take it for what it's worth.

    Ticketbastard sucks. Plain and simple.

That's why I try to buy tickets directly from the band, if possible.
Or I go right to the venue and buy from the box office.

Ticketmaster's service charges can get very ridiculous. They don't go
out of their way to do any service for me worth $7.50 per ticket (using
Pink Floyd tickets as an example). Say I call ticketmaster and buy
four Pink Floyd tickets. That's $30.00 in service charges. $30.00 for
having some minimum-waged employee talk on the phone with me for 5
minutes and take my credit card number and address down.

I'm glad Pearl Jam took a stand. When I saw them at the Orpheum it was
the cheapest tickets I bought all year ($19.80 each). I agree with
them, I don't think that Ticketmaster should make more than 10% of the
    ticket cost.

I mean, in the 80s, it was like $13 - $17 to go see a MAJOR band,

Not exactly. Pearl Jam insisted that the service charge be limited to
something fair, I think it was around $2 per ticket.

> The whole thing was a media manipulation ploy that failed.

I completely disagree. I don't think it had anything to do with the
media. If they'd wanted to make a big media deal of it, they could
have done a lot more to get news programs (and the like) interested,
but they didn't. The only time I heard about it was in Notes and MTV
    News. Hardly a media blitz.

> Most fans
> either didn't understand what was going on, and if they did they

Again, I disagree. I believe that most fans understand exactly what
happened and why. And further, most fans I've talked to appreciated
and supported the effort of the band on their behalf.

Basically, everyone I know hates the Ticketmaster surcharges, which
have grown over the years from an annoyance to a clear rip-off. The
surcharges they put on the tickets have grown to the point where they
are larger then what I feel the price of the tickets themselves should
be! Ticketmaster clearly has a monopoly in the industry. I'm actually
surprised that nobody's brought lawsuits against them before all this.

Woop, I wrote .314 before most of the other stuff, but didn't get it
entered before being summoned off for a meeting (missing the notes
    in between).

Basically, I used to see shows all the time, like at least once a
month, sometimes as often as once a week (when there were that many
shows in my area). When I started seeing shows in the early 80s,
ticket prices for big name acts at stadium-style shows were about
$8-$10 (in the Phoenix area). Now a similar sized show is $30-$40 a
    ticket!!

I could probably afford to go see a $10 show. There AREN'T ANY! You
can't hardly get in to see a LOCAL BAND for $10 anymore! I haven't
been to a concert in almost a year and it's primarily because of the
ticket prices. They've grown like new car prices, many times the rate
of inflation. I consider that unfair. And I consider forced
surcharges to be a major contributing factor.

    Greg

Greg is right and Cookster (in a rare case :^) I admit) is wrong.

Ticketmaster is the one screwing with us, not Pearl Jam. The surcharge
is a red herring. The real problem is their monopoly on selling
tickets and their flat-out ownership of venues catering to concerts.

There's no sense of market value or decency left in the ticket
business. When Roth ticket agency in Providence is advertising
Stones tickets before they go on sale, that's crap. And I've heard
it argued that they are selling on "speculation" which is yet another
load of crap - they're getting blocks before the rest of us.

Pearl Jam's motives aside, Ticketmaster is the worst thing to happen
to the industry, and the Rolling Stone article Shawn mentioned did
a little expalaining about how, with "blockbuster attraction"
exceptions, people are going to less and less shows - they're relegated
to picking a few or one good ones a year, due to the price. Is that
    good for the industry?

I don't care to see Pearl Jam succeed as much as I care to see
Ticketmaster fail miserably - they're turning the concert experience
into one big nightmare for any fan of any group. I used to be able
to see groups anytime I wanted, but the price increases and hassle
have made it almost impossible for me to see anybody (or want to).
And I know other music fans who've quit the scene too. Is that
    good for the industry?

Shawn, that's on vanilla Ticketmaster sales. What is not known and what
Tickemaster won't divulge is what about the blocks that are pre-sold?

When I stand in line and "sold-out" happens to the 10th person in line
for a moderate show, there were tickets that were already gone
    before the sale.

When I see the front rows occupied by people who don't show up until
the 4th song, I know those seats didn't go to fans - they went to
folks with bucks or connections looking for little more than a night
    out.

When I see Ticket Agencies hawking tickets before they are officially
on sale, I believe they KNOW they're getting (or already have) some.

And then there's the plain old-fashioned scalped tix, which somehow
weirdly seem to be in the hands not of people who actually stood in
    line, but by professionals.

It's those tickets the performers aren't making anything off of and it
those tickets that seem to dominate these days. There's kickbacks
going on. Ticketmaster claimed some if it is legal although Rolling
Stone somehow wouldn't be allowed to view the supposed "public
    records."

Look, what's obviously going on is that they're throwing percentage
figures like "54% of this" and "17 percent of that" without telling
you that "this" and "that" are NOT the same thing and thus we're
    comparing apples to oranges.

The mathmatics are hard to describe but clearly Ticketron is NOT making
54% of the ticket price since it's take is much less than that so we
don't know what WHAT they are making "54 percent of".

It could be 54% of the average revenue from hot dog sales in Montana
    for all we know.

Sean, how is it that you can say that the performers don't make
anything off that ticket. They make the same money off that ticket
as any other ticket. What they don't make is money off the scalpers

The strike is good because baseball sucks and it will help diminish

I've heard cases of legal scalping where Ticket master or
Ticket World "...have tickets to sold out shows.", but the
price is much higher than it would have been if you would
get it the old way by standing in a line and waiting. That

    	Try this:

Band makes 90% of ticket sales [face value].

    	Promoter/whoever makes 10%.

Ticketmaster makes 100% of "handling charge" or "scalping fee"
[which is actually what it is]. They then split that with the
    	promoter/venue.

Is it that hard to believe that it's possible?

I was responding to a note about performers making %'s off of a ticket
    sale. I shouldn't have said they didn't make anything - I meant
"anything more", i.e. the % goes way down as the fixed price the band
gets remains constant and the scalped price goes up. 50%, 94%,
whatever, it's a smaller percentage by the time the final sale is made.

Actually, over the weekend it finally occurred to me what those
    percentages may be: profit margins.

I.E. Ticketmaster keeps 53% of THEIR revenue (the fees, etc.) as
profit, why the artists only make 17%.

However, your note gave the impression that the the artist's cut of
some pie is 53% and the Ticketmaster cut of the SAME pie is 17%. One
thing I am certain of is that we are NOT talking about the same pie in
    those two percentages.

And I suspect the reporter wanted you to think that too. It's
debating tactics 101: give two unrelated numbers, make one bigger
and dupe everyone into thinking that the bigger one implies "more"
than the smaller one on the same scale.

suej... if you were listening to waaf this morning then you
probably heard the song 'i got ID' (which is really called
'i got sh!t' but i guess they <gasp> commercialized it...).

pearl jam released a cd single today called 'merkin ball'.
the cd has two songs... 'i got sh!t' and 'long road'. they
were recorded during the sessions for neil youngs mirror
ball album. stone gossard doesn't play on the single, but
     instead neil young does.

/brian (who will be on his way to newbury comics at lunch)

ps - the date for the album release has been pushed back
into the first part of the year. the band had hoped
for a chistmas release... but i guess the single will
	  have to do for now.

     picked up merkin ball last night... as suspected, two new songs;
'i got ID' and 'long road'. you can tell that they were recorded
during the mirror ball sessions... both sound like they could
easily have fit in on neil young's mirror ball album. i was wrong
the other day... not only does stone gossard not play on either
track, but neither does mike mccready... the guitar work is
solely from ed ved and neil. kinda cool i guess, but since the
words and music are by ed ved, and neither pj guitarist even
plays (and jeff only plays on long road) i'm not really sure
what this single has to do with pearl jam...?

Subject: TOUR DATES

The rock band Pearl Jam, whose campaign against high ticket prices has
hindered its touring the past two years, Wednesday announced a 31-date
concert tour of North America and Europe.

The band's publicist said the Grammy Award-winning group would begin
the U.S. leg in their Seattle home town on Sept. 16 and end in Miami
on Oct. 7.

The European leg will begin in Cork, Ireland, on Oct. 24 and end in
Lisbon, on Nov. 25. In all, they will play 11 U.S. dates, one Canadian
date, and 19 European dates.

U.S. venues were not announced yet, as some were still being
negotiated. Those confirmed so far range in size from 8,000 to 25,000
capacity.

The tour will help promote the band's new album "No Code," which is
scheduled to be in stores on August 27.

Although Pearl Jam ranks as one of the world's most popular rock
bands, their touring has been limited by their reluctance to play
major venues that have exclusive arrangements with ticketing giant
Ticketmaster.

Pearl Jam says Ticketmaster has a stranglehold on the industry
allowing it to charge excessive service charges. In retaliation, the
band last year contracted with a start-up ticketing agency and played
a handful of shows in non-traditional venues that weren't controlled
by Ticketmaster.

The band's last U.S. concert was Nov. 7 in San Diego, several months
after the Justice Department disappointed the group by dropping an
antitrust probe into Ticketmaster.

The publicist said ticketing arrangements would be handled by FT&T
(Fans, Tours & Tickets), a division of Philadelphia-based merchant
bank Fillmore Mercantile.

U.S. ticket prices will be a relatively modest $15-$22.50 each,
excluding a $2 service charge per ticket and a 50 cent fee per order.
The tickets will be sold through a toll-free line that will be
announced by radio stations in each tour market next month.
-------------
Pearl Jam
announced today a Fall tour which will include eleven U.S. dates,
one Canadian Date, and nineteen European dates. The U.S. tour will
kick off in the band's hometown of Seattle on September 16 and will
end in Miami on October 7. The European leg of the tour will begin
in Cork, Ireland on October 24 and end in Lisbon, Portugal on
November 25. The tour follows the release of Pearl Jam's forthcoming
fourth album entitled "No Code" which is scheduled to be in stores
on August 27th.

Venues, on-sale ticket dates and general ticket information for
the U.S. leg of the tour will be announced during the first three
weeks of August via local radio stations located in or near each of
the cities where the band is scheduled to play.

The tentative tour schedule is as follows:

"No Code" is the best Pearl Jam ever. This one won`t get as much
commercial success, but it is the one I`ve been waiting for.
It`s real mellow and folky. Eddie plays the harmonica and it
    sounds just like Neil Young.
The packaging rules. The cover consists of 144 polaroids taken
by the band. On the inside there is a little packet of pictures -
nine different ones with the lyrics to a song on the back of each
one. I would assume that each cd has different pictures.
      This album is GREAT.
