790.0. "Dan Reed Network" by QRYCHE::STARR (Spontaneity has its time and place.) Wed Sep 11 1991 20:39

I picked up the latest album by the Dan Reed Network, entitled 'The Heat'.
I've been trying to decide whether to post this note in HEAVY_METAL or
MUSIC, but I decided to cross-post it to both, as the music is very diverse.

This is DRN's third album, the first two being 'Dan Reed Network' and 'Slam'.
I've never heard these early ones, in fact I had just heard of the band this
summer (and thought this new one was their first).

The band is *very* diverse! They touch a whole slew of musical styles - the
first couple songs are straight rock ("Baby Now I" reminds me of The Jones,
"The Heat" reminds me of the Cult, "Blame It On The Moon" is sorta Bon-Jovi-
ish).

But then there are some sharp turns - "Mix It Up" would sound perfectly in
place on Janet Jackson's '1814' album. "Let It Go" is a real pretty soul
number. There is a cover of Pink Floyd's "Money" - but they steal the bass
line from "For The Love Of Money"! Sounds strange, but it works, sorta reminds
me a little Faith No More. And then there's "Chill Out", which is a nice
takeoff on Leon Redbone!

Strange mix of hard rock and rock and funk and other assorted styles. But
they blend nicely together - I bet this is one *hot* band to see live!

Musicians:
Blake Sakamoto - Keyboards
Melvin Brannon II - Bass
Brion James - Guitars
Daniel Pred - Drums
Dan Reed - Vocals, Guitar, Piano

The album was produced by Bruce Fairbairn and Nile Rodgers.

Oh, and you get your money's worth - a total of 15 songs and over 65 minutes
long!!!

    Re: Dan Reed Network

I really do like it. It hasn't been off my stereo all week. I never
really liked their first couple of albums, but I was given a copy of
the new and thought I'd play it to see what its like and was very
impressed. I immeidiatley did a tape of it and have played it over
    and over in the car.

Some of the lyrics are pretty intense, but still with that WTF groove.
There's a great song on there called "Chill Out" (I think) which is a
acoustic tongue in cheek blues (complete with antique scratches like
an old record player) which has pretty serious lyrics. Its a very
    diverse, but good album.

Caught DRN at the `Dise a coupla weeks ago. Yes, brilliant live band
and Dan Reed is quite intense but by no means is he the whole band.

I knew they were playing there, and I almost went, but blew it off since
I had never heard them before. Now I'm kicking myself!!! Hope they come
around again.....

BTW, the band is managed by Q-Prime, the same guys that manage Queensryche
and Metallica.

790.3Say Hello to DRN!KBOMFG::TMCMANUSTue Sep 17 1991 11:3514
I was heavily into DRN for a couple of years through the first two
    albums (which I have).

The initial attraction was that "diversity" of styles that has
already been mentioned. I played DRN and SLAM almost to death
and as a result I've gone a little off them at the moment.

I'd recommend the first album over SLAM, as the latter suffers
from a couple of overly-long, self indulgent ballads that kind
    of ruin "the groove".

Good band - one day my interest will return.

I'd agree with -1 about getting the first album before Slam... both
of which I too have worn out.

As for the latest album, the only song I've heard off it is 'Money',
and being a little bit (understatement) of a Pink Floyd fan, I was
    NOT impressed....

re DRN over Slam - absolutely. I loved DRN when it first came out
(still do) and although in retrospect Slam still stands head and
shoulders above the competition I distinctly remember being
disappointed in it when it first came out.

Maybe using DRN producer Bruce Fairbairn for The Heat (with the
exception of aforementioned Money - which I actually don't mind, even
if it does murder the original) helps explain the return to form.

790.8nice results!QRYCHE::STARRNice guys sleep alone.Wed Nov 20 1991 15:496
There's an article in this week's Billboard with Bruce Fairburn, talking
about producing the latest DRN album. He said that all the drums, bass,
rhythm guitars and (some) keyboard were all recorded live in the studio!
I'm a little surprised, 'cause it sounds really good!!!

Well, I've dug out all three of their albums and have listened to them
over the last week or so and have to say that Slam is my favourite. Its
got two ballads on there which I really dislike, but the rockier stuff
makes up for it (the title track and 'Can't get you out of my mind'
and 'All for Love' spring to mind).

Any info on a new release ? The Heat has to be a couple of years old by
    now.

    Yo Tone...

I have had SLAM on the car stereo for weeks!

I do like "Rainbow Child".... as a song but stuff like "Tiger In A
    Dress" is way cool...

790.13NEWOA::DALLISONThey make redundancies don't they?Tue Jul 06 1993 18:2816

A compilation album is coming out late July containing remixed (and in
some cases re-recorded) versions of tunes from the bands three albums.
Nuno Bettencourt (Tenniscourt) is playing guitar on some tracks and
even singing a duet with Dan on "Long way to Go".

Apparantly Dan has said that this is not a greatest hits package
because they never had any hits as such but more of a reminder to the
world as to what the albums were about.

Despite their last album being released in 1991, the bands record label
are still very happy to continue working with them and are pushing for the
release of an all new studio album in mid 1994.

    From Kerrang.

Oh yeah, and his hair has grown back and he's starting to look very
    very similar to Nuno.

    Poor bastard.
