Thanks for the invite down Coop! I had a good time and enjoyed hearin
you guys. I especially liked your Judas Priest material! I just wanted
everyone here in notes to know that Coop dropped his drawers for the
best buns contest and gave it good run for the money. Now I don't know
if the ladies that were judging got a thrill out of it, but I did
notice that you put a smile on the face of that BIG BURLEY bouncer
that was there! 8^)!!!....... just kiddin. I did enjoy being a judge
for the Hot Legs contest. I don't care what you say, #1 still had the
best legs even if #3 did drop her skirt! I called em as I saw em.

One little nit. Even though I do have alot of hearing problems as I was
tellin you about, If there ain't no hair on the walls your not using
your Marshalls to their full potential!!! YOU POSEUR YOU!!!! 8^)))))

The tape went out at lunch time yesterday. Here's the scoop...

Its a live recording at a local club "The Mine", on a Monday night (8.19.91).
No effects, no fancy crap at all, just a pair of mics hangin in front of the
stage. Lots of boo-boos (like a 2 minute pause after the first song while
Tom changed guitars), bad mix (had a *drummer* mixing us, and you can tell !),
some vocal_harmony_Boo-boos etc...)

The club is pretty large, about the size of AJ's I guess...
PA is mostly PV stuff. Three-way stereo, with 400s,800's and 900's
doing the power, (4) 18" front loaded bass bins, (4) dual 10" mid horns,
and (2) dual-1" throat high horns. (It's pretty mighty - about 5Kwts total
I think). As an aside, we were also using our Par56/Par46 lights, some
150wt "rain lights" we built, 12 channel light controller etc...

Tom plays a strat and a Charvel thru a marshall JMP 50wt single channel
with some stomps and a 2x12 celestion loaded cab. I play Ibanez exclusively
thru my rack (Furman-ADA-DIGItech-Rocktron-Metaltronix) into (2)4x12 celestion
loads and (2) 2x12 Scorpion+ loads. Drums are Tama RockStars, Bass is
Peavy/Crate. Everything is micd with SM57's/58's/Ev's/and Audio Technica mics.
The board is my Soundtech ST116.

Here's whats on the tape:

HardBall is getting ready to COME OUT SMOKIN' !!

Join us for our re-debut with our new drummin' thunder-man, Skip Turnbaugh,
during the week of 6-10 November at The Mine.

Be forewarned:

- We've dumped all our "classic rock" stuff except for some cob-web-covered
Van Halen. :^). No more ZZ Top, no more Bad Co., no

- New stuff includes Metallica, Rush, The Cult, Kix, Lynch Mob,
LA Guns, GnR, Slaughter, new original material etc...

- We'll have some new PA gear, and some new stage lighting, so bring your
ear plugs, suntan oil... Also new to the show is the patented "HardBall
Q38 Automatic Panty Launcher" - so ladies(!), be *sure* to bring panties !!
  We need the ammo !!

- We're still doin' "I'll Be There For You" (and kickin' it!). :)

The Mine is at Academy and LaSalle.

We'll also be out at The Penthouse on the 5th, 6th and 7th of December.
The Penthouse is also at Academy and LaSalle.

We'll also be at The Rack N Roll sometime in January - no date set
yet.

Come out and join the party ! We'll have a blast and be sure to chastise
any DECcies at the place.

jc (co-thrasher, ammo loader/tester)
666.111I'd love to sit in with this crew ! 8^)RAVEN1::JERRYWHITELife's short ... note smart !Wed Oct 02 1991 12:4647
I finally got to hear these guys, even if it was on tape. My initial
thoughts ... killah ! 8^)

I've made a zillion tapes in bars so I can judge how a band *really* sounds
as opposed to how it comes across on tape. With that in mind, these guys
KARANKED !

I'm a cover_slut_puppy anyway, so that's another reason I liked it. If I
go to a bar to party, I wanna hear music that I'm familiar with. Let's
see, plusses and minusses ...

On the minus side ...
	- `Comin' Of Age' sucked. Wasn't the band's fault though, they
just did a fair job of a lousy song.
	- The drummer really has a, uh, unique sense of timing on certain
songs (he's out of the picture now, so it doesn't really matter)
	- There was some vocal overkill on certain songs, like `Where
Have All The Good Times Gone'. The 3 part harmonies sound GREAT
on most tunes, but on others, they needed to be simple ...

Now, on the plus side ...
	- Good song selection, I could definitely smell a party brewin' !
You couldn't expect to much crowd response on a Monday night,
but you guys still got it. Especially later on in the evening,
when you'd finish a song and one of the band members would say,
	  `Somebody scream !'. It worked ...
	- The vocals were GREAT. I'm more tuned into vocals these days I
guess, because it seems like every band has a killer guitar
player, so there's not much new on that front. `I'll Be There
For You' and `Lights' were VERY impressive. My old band used to
cover `Angel Eyes' by Jeff Healey and the harmonies on that one
always brought the house down - I imagine that you guys have
the same response. I also liked the way the singer(s) attempted
to copy the original singers voice.
	- The guitar work was pretty happnin' too - Coop finally found an
outlet for massive dives in *every* song. You sell yourself
short pal, ya ought to leave the whammy bar alone and show the
folks that you can really play and that you ain't all show ... 8^)
	- The best songs were, `Slide It In', `I'll Be There For You', `Man
In The Box', `Nothing But A Good Time', `Lights', `Same Old
Situation' (woulda been better if you had Nasty Habits backin'
you up, but ...), and the intro to `Gettin' Better' ... the
rest of it sorta fell apartbut I'd blame that on the drummer.

I'd like to hear you guys on a Friday night with the new drummer ! 8^)

Scary ...
666.131Thanks for the review Friz !! Greg - You be NEXT !!KDX200::COOPERStep UP to the RACK !Mon Nov 25 1991 21:144
I'm gonna remix this thing thru Jeff's (soundman-dude) Rack-o-doom
to usse his gates and compressors - then it'll really be happenin' !!

jc
666.133KDX200::COOPERStep UP to the RACK !Tue Nov 26 1991 13:4538
We try to do them the speed that the original artists (? ;) did them...
It's hard to speed anything up with a human metronome behind ya. :)

I think Friz was pointing out that Paris Burning does a speedie-thrashy
version of "Look What The Cat Dragged In".

FWIW - We save the speedie-thrashy stuff for some of our original material.

Also, just to give you a clue as to how the tape was put together:

All instruments were miked at our rehearsal studio, run thru a snake
directly to a StudioMaster 24 channel mixer. Four sub mixes directly to
a Yamaha MT100 II portable 4 track. Guitars and Bass were subbed
to one Track, lead vocals to one track, backup vocals to one track and
drums to one track.

Tom now uses a GK 250RL, Ross 2x10 cab, Randall 2x12 (celestion), DOD Wah,
Charvel Model 4, and a modified Strat.

Guido used a PV Foundation Bass, Crate 15" (something) amp, Rapco Direct
box.

I used my rack of doom with (1) Marshall 4x12, (1) ABC Custom Cab, and an
Ibanez RG570.

Skipster plays Rodgers, Pearl and Yamaha drums and Zildjian cymbals.

Mikes were Sennheiser, Shure, and EVs (EV's for Vox, Sennheisers for
instruments, and Shures for overheads {drums}).

Rough mix direct to tape from the MT100II with a DSP128+ for slight 'verb.
Final mix will be back thru the StudioMaster with a 36 space rack chock
full of gates, exciters, compressors, expanders etc...

It was about 40 degree in the studio, so everything was 1 take (except
when we blew a circuit breaker), and live (no overdubs).

HardBall has a new drummer...

A non-deccie. His name is Casey Milner. He plays Pearl Drums, zildjian
cymbals. He's pretty happenin'. The Skipster has since left to take
up with another happenin' gig - The Head Full Of Zombies.

Same basic stuff - We're bar-whore-old-farts - Cover metal (BonJovi, Metallica,
Priest, Fire House, Sabbath, Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Guns-n-Roses, LA Guns
etc...), and we've got some original material also... (about 6 that are
performable I guess).

We're playing a week at Union Station (April) in Colorado Springs, and I
suspect a Thursday at The Cavalcade in Pueblo (Metal night).

Stay tuned...

Bcuk, I appreciate your feedback dood, but I'd like to mention a couple
things. FWIW - Some of the songs you mention, we (HardBall) would love
to get rid of, but a lot of times people wanna know when we're gonna play
'em:

Ferinstance:

Biker doosa ALWAYS wanna here Born To Be Mild. We thru the American Bland
thing in there so we wouldn't have to spend much time doin' more "Classic
cRock". :) Blues-type doods with funny hats always want us to play old
jammin' standards - hense "Smoke On The Rotter".

We have to keep BReakin' The Law, cuz its the only song I know how to sing,
besides I love all Priest. :)

And perhaps its a regional thing, but the first thing I noticed here was
HOW MUCH ZEPP is on the damn radio here ! People ar Zeppelin fanatics here.
They go nutty when we play it.

I gotta agree about Paranoid and Livin' After Midnight though. Yaawwwwwnnnn...
As we rack up more tunes, we'll be boffin' the cheese. For now though, I hate
playin' the same sets like 3 nights in a row - I like to swap songs around...

Again, I ain't arguin' with ya, just respondin' ! Thanks for da Input !

jc (If I never play VH oldies again it'll be too soon :)
666.180no more no moreCAVLRY::BUCKNothing really matters...Wed Feb 19 1992 18:437
I know all about Bikers and Blues doodz...I mean, I just joined a bar
band that plays "Flannel-shirt Rock" myself!!

However...it *is* 1992...anything that is over 15 years old is
questionable IMVHO. Songs like Born to be Wild, Smoke on the Water,
Stairway to Heaven, Freebird, You Really got Me, etc. need to be
archived in time, and never, ever, played again!!!
666.181KDX200::COOPERStep UP to the RACK !Wed Feb 19 1992 18:556
Flannel shirt rock - Waagagagagagagagaaaa...
Thats KILLER ! I'm gonna have to use that. :)

Agreed about the 92 thing too... I'll stick with Oldies like FireHouse
and LA Guns...

Well, I'm not giving my unasked for opinion here because Jeff asked me
if I would post a review of HARDBALL. So here it goes................
I was highly impressed! The band has a lot of energy and plays a great
variety of rock. I was especially pleased when they started playin
    EAGLES tunes.

IMHO they are a must go see band. Especially if your looking for some
good times. I had a hard time keeping still in my chair.

HARDBALL hits a homerun and I give em two thumbs up.

I agree Kat! Its been some time now since I heard HARDBALL. I have to
say I was impressed by how much you guys improved since the last time I
saw you. The overall sound quality was improved also. I thought that
the band played a good selection of tunes that kept the overall crowd
happy, and still catering to the HM people at the same time.
I thought your new drummer was a good move for the band. Much more
dynamic than the last guy you had.
The thing that really stood out to me was the sound that Coop was
getting. Both guitarists in the band play Marshall, which is my fav to
hear. But, the sound that Coop was getting was much fuller and richer
sounding that the other guitarist (can't remember his name). I don't
mean to say he sounded bad, its just that his tone was kinda weak in
comparison to the sound of your set up. Thats why I was asking you if
you had a tube Marshall, when you were explaining your set up to me, I
didn't know the rack set up was really being used.
My opinion, if both you guys could have the sound you were getting
last Saturday when I heard you, WOW, you'd be puttin some hair on the
wall if you know what I mean! I really enjoyed hearing you guys and
will make a point to come out again. A band you must check out in the
Springs area. Well done Coop! Keep it up!

So what does one do to get a tape of Hardball, HFOZ, etc?

As much as I'd like to get out that way I don't think anytime soon
I'll be making west to check you out in the clubs. Too bad we don't
have a temporary exchange program for our jobs like students, etc.
have (said only half-jokingly if at all).

I don't think HFOZ have a tape as they do mostly covers. Hardball has
a demo tape that you might be able to get Coop to getcha a copy of.

Personally I think a job exchange program would be great!

HFOZ will have a tape out in a couple of weeks. I think two
covers and two originals. It won't be pro or anything just a tape
to send around. I bet jc will send ya a Hardball demo. Just remember

Some changes to our schedule... Most of these engagements are '4 set nights'
unless otherwise noted.

Here's our solidified schedule for April:

Thursday, 9 April:

The Cavalcade, "Metal Night", Pueblo, Colorado. Hosting
the Mini Skirt Contest (hubba, hubba!). Premier of two new
originals! Adverts on KKFM, KILO, KATM and GT.

Wednesday, 22 April thru
Saturday, 25 April:

Union Station, Colorado Springs, Colorado. 5 sets/night.
   Adverts on KKFM and GT.

Thursday, 30 April:

The Cavalcade, "Metal Night", Pueblo, Colorado. Hosting
the Mini Skirt Contest (hubba, hubba!). Adverts on KKFM,
KILO, KATM and GT. HardBall T-shirts and hats will be available.
(for more info, send mail :).

The Boomers gig has been moved out to early May, as this agent BONEHEAD
kinda screwed up on us.

We're now making plans for some recording time, that should also
happen during the month. When it's completed, we'll have a 90 minute
tape of about everything we do - clips from gigs_past, plus a the new
stuff which will be a tape of 10 originals that I'll send
out. If you haven't already sent me your address and want one,
send mail. We've also started video taping our shows, so we might
consider making a low budget vid too.

If y'all would like to be on our mailing list for monthly fliers,
send me your name/address/zip.

If you'd like to be on the HB distribution list (or be removed from
it) send me mail, and I'll modify that.

As always, thanks for your support !!

Well, a bunch of us are going to Pueblo to see "Storm". They are at

get back to The Dublin shorty after midnight (we gotta work Friday
right ??).

Should be an EXCELLENT time !!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This seemed as good a place as any to put this

I went to a HardBall gig here in the Springs recently. This was my first
"noters gig", and first time I've seen anyone I know personally here in
Colorado. I shared some thoughts/comments with Jeff via mail and he asked me
to share some of my thoughts with the ::GUITAR community. Why not, eh?

First, I have to say, despite all the ragging and chiding back and forth,
Coop's sound is pretty damn good! Of course, with that "rack from hell" and
all those lights he'd better damn well be able to get a good sound from it!
:-) Of course the *3* Marshall 4x12 cabs didn't hurt, either. (Personally
I think he just likes the logo. :-)) He doesn't use too much layering of
effects which is a real problem with some of these high tech rigs/players.
He still manages to keep the dynamics and attack while getting the sound
his music demands of him.

The overall sound of the band is very crisp, and all the players have the
chops to pull things off. The bassist/singer is one of those who has the
ability to very closely resemble the vocal sound of whoever he's covering;
Pretty good for a little guy who won't play the blues. :-) Actually,
the whole band seems to have that ability: the covers are done almost
exactly like the originals. They covered "Smoke On the Water" and did
it *exactly* right. As I told Coop, sure, this is a song that every 14
year old can play the notes to, but Hardball gave all the right inflections
to everything, got the feel right, and those vocals ... Heaven for someone
who grew up listening to Deep Purple.

Despite his self-effacing comments in here Coop is quite the guitarist. He's
got the style and the chops for this kind of music down to a "t". The other
guitarist in the band is technically a wizard. His playing is fast and
precise. Unfortunately, he was struggling with amp settings at this point
(just gave into MRP-itis and hasn't got the patches setup properly yet) and
thus had a pretty thin sound that night. This was my main criticism of the
band's performance; It would have been near perfect if he'd had his sound
together. Luckily this was a smaller club (Union Station) and the crowd was
thin, so very few people noticed. :-)

Some of the stuff the band does is not exactly the style of music I play
personally, but I can listen to just about anything, and what they did sounded
great! I'd recommend them to anyone who wants to see a good band. Of course
it helps if you're in the Colorado Springs area... :-)

Oh, one last thing; they were trying out a new sound man that night, a guy
that I know apart from the band (I'd never heard him "do sound" before though).
He was _GREAT_. From what Coop said, they'd never even rehearsed before, but
Roger knew right where to put everything in the mix. Even did a great flange
solo during the drum solo. :-) Way to go, Roger Bolte!

(So Coop, do I get the money you said you'd pay me to write this now? :-))

    On that note:

A buddy of mine is a guitar player here in the Springs and has
managed to catch Hardball several times when I drag him out by
his ear [he's into playing the top 40's, ie, wedding reception
stuff]. He caught the same show at the Union Station and also
mentioned Tom's guitar sound as being rather poor that night
[Tom being "the other guitar player" that Sam mentioned; also,
he used different words 8-) ]. Not being a guitar player, I
couldn't figure out why but did also notice. Tom's sound was
    	much better at the Cavalcade.

Coop, for those of you who like to bust his nuts, has improved
greatly since first starting the band. Amazing what playing in
front of people will do to improve your performance, ey, Coop?!

    	Hammer.

Thanks Carl - Yeah in Toms defense he spends a lot of time in EDIT mode
learning how to make his new gear work. He'll settle down after a year
or so... :)

Thanks for the complement too man, I appreciate it. They say playing out
is the best practice in the world....

FWIW - We've played 24 engagements so far this year. Thats roughly
one thousand songs, 120 hours of playing time, 192 shots of Southern Comfort,
and 384 consumed budweisers. This doesn't included practice.
I figured it out: We make $.10/hour. :) I gotta really cool spread sheet.
:)

The latest news is that within the next three weeks, we'll be going to a
local studio to do a DAT (for Cassette dups and possible CD's when we all
get rich). It'll be an "EP" I guess - 4 originals on side one for the
EP thing, and four covers for a demo on side two...

The EP side will be called "HardBall - Playing For Keeps" and will have:

Playin' For Keeps
Thats All
Devils Games
To Be A Fool

FWIW - 'Thats All' is the Ballad (or as Buck would say "Ballard" :) you
heard us play out at The Cavalcade last time... A great song for mutual
polishing of belt buckles. :)

The demo side will have four covers:

Seek And Destroy - Metallica
Last Time In Paris - Queensryche
SOS - Motley Crue
Never Enough - LA Guns

If we have time, we'll also do "I'll Be There For You" by BonJovi
(another song for polishin' belt buckles :)

In my little walkman right NOW. It's a compilation of boom-box stuff,
recordings from gigs from the board, hung mikes (no offense dood :).

The best recording we got is a sears and roebuck stereo tape deck plugged
into the board at Union Station back in March... Got a killer copy of
Caseys drum solo and "Dirty Deeds". yamaha drums RIP!

Anyway - I think I'll wait until I can get one
of similar recording quality to the Joyful Noyz

be about a month.

A swap would be cool...

We're going with 8 track (1/2") this time - the price is right, and this
guys work and gear is EXCELLENT. Tascam, Lexicon, TC etc..etc.. with SMPTE
video too - which we can use later if the $$$ are there. It'll be mixed to
DAT and distributed on cassette until we can afford something better (CD's
are *BIG* bucks, as you know :).

We'll put four of our originals down, and whip out 4 covers while we're
there...the tapes will come in two flavors "Demo" and "EP" (if I may be so
bold :). The "demo" will have originals on one side, covers on the other.
The EP flavor will have 2 originals on each side. We want to sell the EP
tapes at shows and local stores, and use limited releases of the demo
for friends and that.

We should have a mixdown by the first weekend in June.

I'd like to grab Alans topic here too.

A little background on my band also, just so ya know:

HardBall is a contempory pop metal band. We do 80% covers of "old metal"
(AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Nazareth, Juda Priest etc), and covers of "new stuff"
(Metallica, Shotgun Messiah, Alice In Chains, Tora Tora, Guns n Roses etc...).
We're four piece and we're vocally intensive (means we all sing). We write
some original material when we can come to terms with our schedule. We're
based in Colorado Springs and play the local heavy metal bar circuit here,
and in Pueblo (soon in Denver too).

Like Alans band, we'd had a rough four track demo we did at our rehearsal
studio, and thought it was pretty happenin'...heh-heh; I stand corrected.
Anyway, we decided that we'd kill two birds with one stone. We started
planning a trip to the studio to get a 4 song "demo" and a 4 song "ep"
that we could sell at our shows.

Here's what we ended up with.

Here's how it's going:

Night 1

We arrived at 17:00 and unloaded our gear and staged in the garage.
First thing we noticed is that the drum room was way to small for our
drummer (Casey) and his kit. He has 16pc Yamaha Custom...Of course, he
only brought a 6pc sub-set...But the bass drum is HUGE... After trying to
make him fit we ended up setting him up in the garage.

Drums were recorded onto two tracks of the TASCAM. Kick drum (single, with
double pedal) was miked with an Audio Technica ATM25. The mike was "in" the
drum. Highhat was miked with a EV PL6. Snare was miked with Shure SM57, all
toms (rack and floor) with Beyer Dymanic MkII (M-76). I'll have to get the
model/number of the three overheads and post tomorrow...But there were three
overheads (cute itty bitty little mikes :).

Both guitar racks were set on top of each other in the room where Tom, Guido
and myself would play. Speaker cords were run into other rooms (1 room for
Tom, one for me).

I used a Celestion stuffed 4x12 in stereo mode, Tom used my 2x12's from ABC
with PV Scorpions. For Tom, a Beyer M-76 were placed in between the two cabs
about 2 feet away from each. The 2x12's were place perpendicularly (sp?) from
each other.

For me, the M-76 was placed about three feet away from the cab pointing right
in the middle. My cab was in a larger room, Toms were in the "closet"...
(just like where you put your cabs, Greg).

We both used our "live" patches. Y'all know what my rig_o_doom is like,
Toms is a Roland GP16 with a MOSvalve.

Tom recorded "wet" with an Ibanez RG565 and a Charvel Model 4.
I recorded "dry" with an Ibanez USA Custom.

Guido used a Randall bass head with direct out and an effects loop.
In the FX loop he used a DSP128+ for a touch of chorus and a hair of
doubling.

Track layout:

Track 1 Drums
Track 2 Drums
Track 3 Guitar (jc)
Track 4 Guitar (tom)
Track 5 Bass (Guido)
Track 6 Scratch (guide-vocal)

We played everything live for the tracks...So tracks 1-5 are keepers.
Pretty much first takes on it all (with exceptions like "Man, restart it,
I hit the damn mike" stuff - scratch one Beyer M-76). We listened to the
tape returns (dry) before we left - quality is killer.

We recorded 8 tunes:

Original stuff Covers:
-------------- -------
Devils Games Enter:SandMan - Metallica
Thats All Man In The Box - Alice In Chains
Playin' For Keeps You've Got Another Thing Comin' - Priest
To Be A Fool Highway To Hell - AC/DC

On the originals, we'll go back and punch in some some patches... We're after
a really good DAT so we can make/sell tapes and CD's (An "EP" if you will).
We'll spend most of our time with the originals.

The covers will more than likely stay the way they are. They are for demo
purposes.

Tonight is our last night. We do vocals (tracks 6,7,8) and any patching
(punching) that needs done. We should have a couple of DATs' and couple of
Cassette masters in our hands before we leave.

Draw backs of Americus Audio:

1. The headphone system is SH*T!
2. Drum room is too small

My advise if you're going to pay for studio time - (I'll repeat what Alan
Starr said):

1. Plan. Know what your going to play, and have an idea in your head for
miking and layout. Make sure you bring your tuner, cords, whatever.
2. Expectations MUST be communicated. We told the engineer that we wanted a
broadcast (CD) quality EP to sell, and a four song cover/demo.
3. Practice your ass off - know your sh*t - Be prepared. Man, we couldn't even
SEE our drummer, and the headphones s*cked, so be prepared for oddities like
that. We just finished a 4 nighter at a club, so we were well rehearsed...
Best practice in the world :)
4. Name your producer and follow number 2. :)

All tolled up, we started at 5, sent Tom back to our practice studio for the
cymbals Casey forgot (drummers, man...sheesh!). And were partying by 9pm or so.

Part two tomorrow...
666.356Day 2 notes/info !!KDX200::COOPERA regular model of restraint...Thu Jun 04 1992 18:5939
Well, we finished our recording last night, but never made it to
mix down. I have an appointment Friday at 13:00 to go over and play
producer. Should be a LOT of fun. I suspect this tape will come out
excellent. What I do have for listening is a straight (dry) dump from
all eight tracks (with no mixing). I'll be making production notes from
that. Umm, one vocal track might be re-done.

First, a couple of corrections from yesterdays write up:

- HiHat mike was an Ibanez Comm 3 condenser mike
- Overheads were Audio Technica ATM Pro 7's
- Guitars were miked with Beyer Dynamics M400's
- Drums were miked with Beyer Dynamics M69's
- Vocals were done with SM58's.

Disclaimers - The four covers we did are for demo purposes only. We didn't do
ANY punches on them at all (thinking we wanted to spend our money on the
original stuff). There are a couple of boo-boos on the covers, so be warned.
:) We did 8 songs in 8 hours total. It'll provbably take us 3-4 hours to mix
it up right and maybe 30 minute to patch a vocal track on "Playin' For Keeps".

Basically, everything is still live. A couple of punches for lead guitar on
the originals. The punches were done by the engineer, James Barber, whilst
we sat in the control room next to the mixer via wireless...

Here's how the tracks laid out:

1 - Drums
2 - Drums
3 - Guitar
4 - Guitar
5 - Bass Guitar
6 - Lead vocals
7 - Backing vocals
8 - Backing vocals

Copies of the finished product will go out Monday (I hope!) !

Okay - we're in "Post Production". We did a mixdown to cassette
Friday and have been listening to it over the weekend - the only
one who has heard it outside the band is Greg...Only cuz I managed
to bait him over to my house to suffer thru it. :)

I've got two pages of production notes on it (thanks for the inputs Greg!),
and one vocal overdub left on one of our originals. We should be finished
and produced to DAT by the end of the week.

I think it'll be pretty decent when we're done...

Well....I'm listening to HardBall demo right now and hears how it
    sounds:
Devil's Games: Very cool melody...I like it. Guitar solo is buff....
    Good groove in the verse.

That's All:Very cool atmosphere. I like the feeling in the chord
    struture. Emotion up the butt.

Playing for Keeps:I like the drum intro. 8) Ac/Dcish groove....
I like the weird bridge before the second chorus.
Kinda cheesy lyrics but everybody write those....8)
I was less impressed by this solo than the other two.
You might try a key modulation at the end. I don't know if it would
    work...Just a thought.

Overall:Good guitar sound and work. Good drum sound and work...I like
the drummer's style. The bass is buried...
I think if you guys had a really good singer it would be great. Even
though *I* KNOW how hard that is...

Yo Bob, Still wrestling with post production... We gotta at least TRY to
get it sounding as good at the Contagious tape! :)

MUCHO thanks to Greg House for coming out last night and playing Co-Producer
for HardBall. We got two of our four originals mixed to DAT last night, and
hopefully will finish TONIGHT, which means that I'll have pre-lim tapes to
send out Monday.

Again, the tapes our friends get will have 8 tunes:

Side A Side B
------ ------
Devils Games (Done)	You've Got Another Thing Comin'
Thats All - (Done)	Man In The Box
To Be A Fool Highway To Hell
Playin' For Keeps	Enter Sandman

The "B" side is just for demo purposes. We did everything live except
for a vocal overdub on Highway To Hell, as you could hear a chunk of
Guidos lung hit the mike. :) We're devoting our efforts and $$ to the
Side A stuff which'll be made into Cassette and CD.

Anyway, I'll be making copies some copies this weekend. The final

666.388Tape ReviewGOES11::G_HOUSEAin'tNoCureForTheSummertimeBlues!Tue Jun 16 1992 20:1632
    Ok,ok,ok!

I've been goaded about writing up a review of this tape long enough, so
    here it is.

First off, I'll have to say I'm a little biased about parts of it,
since I was involved in the mix, so keep that in mind.

First off, overall comment: Good original songs! I'll refrain from
saying I was surprised 'cause I know Jeff's getting tired of hearing
    that from everyone...

I was impressed with the arrangements of the songs and the performances
were quite good, even though I have to say that some of the lyrics are
real cheezy (trite, cliche...) But they're not bad enough to keep me
from listening to it and enjoying it anyway. The production could have
been better, but given the amount of time and money spent doing the
sessions to record and mix this, I'd have to say it's pretty good.

I'd be interested in hearing anyone else's comments on the
mix/production (since I helped). Feel free to send 'em to me offline
    if you want.

I'm not going to do a song-by-song. I liked all the original songs.

The covers didn't seem to have the same cohesiveness to the mix as the
originals, probably because they were rushed through. Some of the
sounds on 'em just didn't seem to blend well. But they're just for
demo stuff for clubs anyway and they'll do fine for that.

I can help a little (since I was there when it was mixed). The guitar
you hear in the Left channel is always Coop and the one in the Right
channel is Tom. One of Tom's leads was panned up center, but for the
most part, the panning stayed on through the leads.

Guido sang the leads on all the originals except "That's All", which
Tom sang. Tom also sang "Enter Sandman" on the cover side.

    Yeah - lesse:

    Covers:

First off, everything was first take - live, except the vox which
we over dubbed on all of 'em.

Another Thing Comin' - Guido sings, I got the lead (natch :)

Man In The Box - Guido sings, Toms got the lead

Highway To Hell - Guido sings, I've got the lead, but I HATE that
lead - I couldn't hear it in the headphones and I fluffed thru hangin'
by a hair. I might go back down and overdub it cuz I don't want anyone
    to think I can't fake Angus. :)

Enter Blandman - Tom sings. I take the first half of the lead, and Tom
(blew) the second half. Again - live stuff, sh*tty headphones/mix.

Originals - Guido sings 'em all except for 'Thats All'

Playin' For Keeps - Tom plays the first lead, I take the key change.

Devils Games - This one is about Tom catchin' his ex-wife bumpin'
uglies with some other dood. Tom takes the first lead, I take the key
    change.

Thats All - Tom sings, I do all the lead work. My personal favorite.
I love playin' those lazy-boy leads (Schhhwwwiinnggg !)

To Be A Fool - Tom takes the first lead, I take the key change.
    (See a pattern here ??).

FWIW - Tom is our lyric man. He wrote lyrics to all our originals
except to be a fool - can you tell ? Guido is the cheese-dog-lyric
guy... Tom and I wrote the hooks, and I'm "The Bridge Man". Casey
also has a lot fo input (especially for a drummer). Casey and I have
written a BUNCH of stuff that is generally too metallic or heavy
    for the others, so...

We've been gettin' requests for Devils Games, Thats All and To Be A
    Fool quite a bit.

666.408The "Scary" review ...RAVEN1::JERRYWHITERen, what's `TFSO' mean ?Fri Jun 26 1992 18:2339
OK, here's my in depth review of the Hardball demo:

A: PLAYING FOR KEEPS
1 - Playing For Keeps: 1 star. I didn't like the cheese d*ck lyrics at all.
The beat was great, including the cowbell. Keep the bridge, throw the
    rest away ...
2 - Devil's Games: 4 stars. Signature Jeff Cooper lead and tone. This is
a *good* tune from start to finish.
3 - That's All: 4 stars. Had a very "Scorpions" touch ... which is great
in a ballad. The feedback/harmonics during the outro lead induced a
    blue vein shwing.
4 - To Be A Fool: 2 stars. The song is WAY out of the singer's range.
The transitions are catchy, and the lyrics are *ok*.

SUMMARY: Be a little more flexable when it comes to phrasing lyrics. Some
of these cuts have a very generic (read: unimaginitave) vocal delivery, and
they sorta die. The hooks and bridges sound great - work on the vocals
some and the songs will be tits.

B: DEMO
1 - Another Thing Coming: 2 stars. I'm tired of this song. Maybe
"Breakin' The Law" or "Electric Eye" would have grabbed anoter star
from me. It seemed a tad slow, and the chords used in the bridge sound
    wrong. B D A F#, B D A C# methinks ...
2 - Man In The Box: 4 stars. Excellent job here ! When the singer
pronounced "pit" and that *other* word, he didn't hang on it long
enough ... was he afraid someone was gonna hear him say a naughty word ?
3 - Highway To Hell: 3 stars. Another tired old song, but it was well
    executed.
4 - Enter Sandman: 4 stars. GOOD JOB !!! Kinda muffed the ending, but I
know there wasn't a lot of time devoted to the cover material.

SUMMARY: Being a cover band, I'm sure these tunes were done in your sleep.
They were done well, and it sounded like you guys knew them note for note,
which is what ya hafta do. Like any band, I'm sure the live performance
would murder these versions, and these were pretty good overall.

    RE: Glh & 2 notes

Well, considering general harmony, it could only be a couple of things:

    A/C# (no 5)

    C#-6 (no b3)

    F#- 2nd inversion (no root)

Taking into chord tone elimination theories, the 3rd degree (b, or
normal) is more important than the 5th degree, so that is why it
eliminates the latter two choices feasibly analyzed as such.

I'm sitting on the tapes - I've got to go back and mix one of the originals,
cuz there is a blip on the DAT source.

HardBall is history. I recommended we recruit a frontman that we had jam
with us at a gig and Guido and Tom freaked. Casey and I are putting together
a new band with said frontman (a Sebastian Bach/Axl Rose type dood). We're
looking for a guitarist & bassist. Casey and I, in the mean time, are writing
some new originals.

Feces Occurs.

So - If your know an agressive obnoxious bassist and guitarist, send 'em
our way.

>with us at a gig and Guido and Tom freaked.

Was not Guido splitting the gig anyways?? i thought I recently saw an
    ad for a bassist/vocalist...WTF?!

Is Tom the lead singer?? I can't see why he would freak, unless the
addition of one more person and the thought of subtraction of 1/5 of
the band's gig money was bugging him.

    Whatever...

666.424KDX200::COOPERA regular model of restraint...Mon Jun 29 1992 17:5415
Guido (bass) and Tom (guit) split the singing. Guido did most of the lead
vocals...He has stamina problems though and by the forth night, his voice is
shot to sh*t. So we meet guy who has power (FREAKED our sound man), stamina,
the look, the ballz and is a major league front-man-unit (the attitude thing
ya know). See, Guido isn't that hot of a bassist, so I think job security
was an issue - ergo, we take away his singing and make him a very mediocre
bassist, and before you know it he's out of the picture.

Splitting gig money 5 ways definately attributed to their demise too...They
consider the band a source of income, where I consider it a release of
pent up musical energy. (Wow - did I say that ??). What I mean is, I do it
for love of music and performing - they do it to put food on the table...

Cuz I don't like being the only guitarist in a band.
I don't like the sound of single guitar bands, and it's
WAY too limiting for what you can do musically. Besides
that, I don't wanna have to sit down and learn leads to

Personally, I'll take a shot at any lead...

I mean limiting as in empty...As in, who's gonna play the rhythm guitar
part whilst I'm doin' a lead (or vice-versa) ?? With only one guitar player,
there IS no rhythm guitar... Unless your Paul Gilbert or Harry Cody, then
the need of the rhythm guitar is evident... On top of that, I enjoy playing
rhythm as much, if not more, than playing lead, so...

If you play in a band where the other guitarist steps on you, then you need
to find another (less selfish) guitarist. I call it team work. I'll say one
thing for HardBall (Tom) - we NEVER stepped on each others toes, NEVER had
volume wars, and never argued about who got what lead. (A rare thing, imho).

Greg, I would think that Coop meant "limiting" in the sense that it might
restrict the choice of material the band can accurately cover. Not that
it would necessarily be personally limiting as a guitar player....

Oh, yeah, that would make more sense coming from his context, but it
wasn't how I read it. Oh well... I'd agree with that, it certainly
does limit what covers you can accurately do.

    re: Coop

> I mean limiting as in empty...As in, who's gonna play the rhythm guitar
>part whilst I'm doin' a lead (or vice-versa) ??

Maybe you don't need one... There have been MANY single guitar bands
that sounded simply wonderful in concert! Maybe they overdubbed leads
over rhythm tracks in the studio, but I don't think anyone misses 'em
live. How about Hendrix, Page, Lifeson, Gibbons? (yeah, I hit several
different kinds of music there, intentionally). Some people, like Ty
Tabor and Vernon Reid don't even put rhythm tracks behind their leads
    on their albums.

> With only one guitar player, there IS no rhythm guitar...

Is that such an awful thing? I actually prefer the open, crisp sound,
of less instruments. In fact, I think that I'd say most of my favorite
bands have had only one guitar player...

> Unless your Paul Gilbert or Harry Cody, then
>the need of the rhythm guitar is evident...

I don't agree with that. I've heard tons of three piece bands that
didn't need a second guitar player. Very few of them have a player the
    caliber of Gilbert or Cody.

> On top of that, I enjoy playing rhythm as much, if not more, than
> playing lead, so...

Now that part of what you said makes sense. If you want to play
rhythm, then you do need another guitar player to do the solos.

>If you play in a band where the other guitarist steps on you, then you need
>to find another (less selfish) guitarist.

There are *very* few of them. For myself, I can't waste my whole life
looking around for one. I'd much rather just play and forget the
endless auditions and boneheads that ya can't work with.

> I call it team work.

Mods, the following is SINCERELY being written without the intent of bash anyone,
but to offer some views that I felt are being left out.

Note 666.459

< Looking back on that, the problems we
< had with our guitar sounds not mixing were primarily MY problem. My
< sound was just too thin and kept trying to get him to fit his sound
< around it, when the real solution was for me to fatten mine up.

I was always big on the "combined" talent of the band, and also the "combined"
tone of two guitars sounding good, and always tried to shoot for that.

There were few times where I felt we actually accomplished that, but most
of times, we seemed to miss the target. If I was going to be the only
guitar player in a band, you really couldn't pay me to play that tone.
Now that I've been back to the woodshed to play by myself, my tone is
somewhat different than it used to be:
Used to be that I took out a lot of the mids out of my sound so that the
other guitarist can fit in there most of the times(he seemed to thrive on
mids in his tone), and I felt that I could be some sort of a bridge between
him and the bass so that we could achieve better overall tonal quality for
	the band.
Coop, I'm back to searching for "tone" again. Push the mids back in, back off on
delay, back off on distortion, etc...

and
< I told J. what I thought could be improved on a few occasions, but I
< never harrassed him about it.

Sorry, Greg, but I don't recall many occasions where you weren't on my back.
Or at lease it felt like it, and I think I tried to accomodate to the "requests"
as best I could.

RE: .465

< -< Not saying I *liked* it's tone, just that it washed me out >-

I believe you did on *few* occasions. RE: "Geoge Lynch"ish tone. And it's that
tone I'm trying to get back to.

< It stomped mine to dust, I couldn't be heard. But then again, I've
< never been into playing at deafening volume.

Well, if you'd like, I'll make a copy of that practice video for you where
my volume was nowhere to be really heard.

It really didn't help that we had a "basher" for a drummer who was China-boy
happy all the time, but before you came along, Will and I had a long
conversation about pros and cons of recruiting him over Alan from Denver.
By all means, the decision was made due to convenience, rather than ability,
and I believe, Jason realized this, too when he joined the band. And his "bashing"
was a concern at that time.

Then of course, we had a bassist who was big on "hip-hop" bass driving music.

When I started out, I had members in mind that were unique, and wanted to pull them
together, but obviously, in an afterthought, this combination didn't work, but I guess
it was a gamble, and in gambling, you either win or lose. Or I suppose one could have
backed out of it before everything was lost, but I like to finish what I start, usually.

I tried to do that too. Perhaps we were actually working against each
other, in terms of getting tones that meshed, without even knowing it.

>Well, if you'd like, I'll make a copy of that practice video for you where

Admittedly, I did turn up too loud that night. Way too loud. I was
just so frustrated with not being able to hear myself, in a bad mood,
and had other self-induced influence that night. Wouldn't you agree
that that was an exception rather then a rule?

True enough -

Another lead player is pretty imperative (IMHO), although I did have a good

either. A Marshall or 5150, or a rack load o-stuff would be fine. Multiple

The bassist is a rack puke - the guitarist plays souped up Boogies
with a processor and LesPauls - unlike any Boogie I've ever heard!
The bass player and drummer do most of the singing - the bassist clones
Tesla WICKED good (Greg is rolling his eyes now :), and the drummer
    sounds like RJD.

We've rehearsed twice and worked up some stuff like SoundGarden, Rush,

    Hmmm...

I suppose I could mention in here that I've been playing with a band
for the past three weeks or so.

Tentatively named "The Zone" it's a 5pc, with:

    Mark Staviski - Guitar/vox
    Jeff Cooper - Guitar/vox
    Will Alexander - Bass/vox (DECcie)
    Blain ?? - Keys/Vox
    Geof Suits - Drums

We've started off covering some prograssive metal stuff along the
lines of Queensryche, Metallica, Rush, Megadeth, Dream Theater etc...
and threw in some grunge (to keep Will happy :-) - Alice In Chains'
newer stuff, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilot (ad nauseum). We'd gotten
about 25 tunes done so far...Then we just auditioned and hired Blain
the other night for lead vox and keys...Thats why I don't know his last
name. We've even started writing a little... Our goal is to play the
metal clubs around town (thats why the grunge and covers :-)

Rack-n-roll isn't interested in a metal band. However, if we covered
Bad Company "Feel Like Making Love", "Can't Get Enough" and "Shooting
    Star" - we'd be shoe-ins. :-)

In defense of Boomers/Bombers HardBall was one of the last bands to
play in there before they stopped booking bands. Twas the best gig
we ever played. Excellent stage, excellent room, and the military
types (say what you want) are a GREAT crowd.

Funny too, because the night we finished there was a biggie, and two of
the guys in "Stomp" came in (they were playing their "farewell" thing
at The Gardens that week), and we asked why they were folding. Brett
sez: "We're just sick of the lame crowds in Colo.Spgs" - we all looked
at each other and chuckled...This after a night of people dancing on
tables, flashing body parts, and buying the band WAY too many drinks.

Anyway, I hope Bombers flies (and is under new management).

    RE: Original material

I used to go round-n-round with Friz about this. Write all the
originals you want - if you don't play out, no one will ever hear
'em. If you play covers ad throw a couple three originals in your
act, sooner or later word will get out that you have some cool
    originals...

Check out Kid Wikkid sometime. They're The Gardens best band, and
their original stuff SMOKES! Kevin (drummer) once told me that they
sell between 10-30 of their CD's there per night. Rockin band!

FWIW - Pueblo kicks ColoSpgs ASS in clubs/crowds.

No offense intended, but most bands that I've seen that tried this
ended up with "originals" that all sounded like the covers they did.
They never seemed to develop much personality to their own stuff. Then
again, I've also seen bands that played only original stuff that
sounded like that too, so take it FWIW.

    RE: Rat

Well Rat, I'll let you in on a little secret:

Sex sells. Some club owner sees some gal (or guy - hey, I
value difference!) flashing a body part at the band, and that
band is *in* around here. *Thats* what it takes around here...

Musicianship has very little to do with it - just check out
"Dirty Boys" or "Caution" ...They plain old SUCK (IMHO). Yet -
they get $500/night to play in the most happenin' bars in town
(ColoSpgs, Denver, Pueblo). Why? - Cuz they are pretty boys, the
girls love them and the club owner know it !!!

Bottom line: The band can be great or they can SUCK musically,
but if they aren't pretty to look at, they are NO WHERE FAST !!
    (Wagagagaga!).

As the spouse mentioned, musicianship is not a factor. Lookin'
    *good* on stage is.

Well since I'm in here giving reviews today.....

I went in and sat in on The Zone's rehearsal last week and was very
impressed by what I heard. These guys have only been together for a
relativitly short period of time but were playing pretty tight! They
were having an off night but the stuff that was hitting right was
    hitting very right!

They were doing alot of AiC, Metallica, Megadeth, and Queensryche...a
few of my favs!!!! The singer who's new to the band has an incredible
voice and just needed to get a little more familiar with some of the
songs. Back up vocals needed some tightening also but like I said they
were having an off night so it may have been just a fluke.

It was also pretty obvious that these guys have professional attitude
about their music and will have a good stage presence!!! Can't wait to
start lining them up with some gigs!!!

Thanks Natalie - that was cool. You'll have to come down when we have
    our sh*t together... (It's not...YET!).

We've been together for just under a month, and have rehearsed three
times now with this new singer dood...(Who sounds like GnR/Tesla type,
I'd say). We're still trying to find our niche, but I think when/if
we do, we'll be working quite a bit. Thats the point ain't it?

Here's a list of some of the toons we're doing, or are working on:

For Whom The Bell Tolls - Metallica
    Enter Blandman - Metallica
    Hot Cherie - Hardline
    I Don't Believe In Love - Queensryche
    Jet City Women - Queensryche
Monkey Business - Skids (Smoke On the Water in f#, Buck ?? :-)
    I'll Remember You - Skids
    Them Bonz - AiC
Man In The Box - AiC
Sex Type Thang - Stone Temple Pilot
    Neighbor - UKJ
    2112 Overture/Temples - Rush
    LimeLight - Rush
    Gettin' Better - Tesla
    2 Late 4 Love - Tesla
    Sympathy Of Destruction - MegaDeth
Pull Me Under - Dream Theater
    Highway To Hell - AC/DC
Fly Me Courageous - Drivin' n Cryin'
    Never Enough - LA Guns
Kiss My Love Goodbye - LA Guns
Sweet Child O Mine - GnR

Some we're good at, some we're not. :-)

from Saturday (7 August) along with the girls from Hooters and
