606.0. "Sluggo" by MILKWY::SLABOUNTY (Would you like a McDolphin, sir?) Mon Jul 01 1991 13:46

I will be the first to admit that this is the H_M conference, and
this band is not H_M ... but before making sure that we stick to
the conference charter like glue I like to give bands the exposure
    	they deserve.

I saw Sluggo [featuring our own Karen Flattery on vocals] at Sir
Morgan's Cove on Saturday night, and they f***in' rocked. None of
the band members really stand out as great musicians, but they are
fantastic when putting it all together. I'd classify them as a
cross between rock and country, kind of. Maybe The Kentucky Head-
hunters with an edge. [And Karen does resemble Pat Benetar.]

"Gonna Have a Good Time Tonight" [Jimmy Barnes and INXS] sounded
incredible ... the rockin'est song of the set, IMO. And they did
a song called "Give 'em the [something?]" that seemed to borrow
fromthe style of Raging Slab. And the Southside Johnny song was
also fantastic. And they threw in a couple of Bonnie Raitt songs
that almost makes me want to go out and get an album or 2 of hers.

Mystic Powers and Sluggo made a great "music sandwich" Saturday,
but this time the "meat" was on the outside as I didn't think the
2nd band [Alternate Route] was quite as good. They were OK, but
definitely not as good as Sluggo.

There are quite a few topics like this in here. Frankly, I'd rather
read about them here than other conferences.

606.11Belated SLUGGO reviewCAVLRY::BUCKDances with Timberwolf!Tue Oct 15 1991 13:0031
Well, a little belated review here, but you know what they say...
    Better late than nevah..HA!

Mostly-read-only-but-pretty-cool-dude Tim Fennell and I caught Sluggo
slugging it out in a 3-band affair last Thursday eve at (s)Hits in
Wormtown (dats Woosta for all you hicks!). The divine Miz Flattery,
fronting a 5-man band, executed a flawless vocal performance,
complimented by her polished stage presence. Not that I like to be the
typical, analytical musician's musician when I do hear a band, but it
quickly because obvious to moi that the fabulous Miz Flattery has had
vocal training in her past....this was claer in her breath control,
vibrato, and diction. The band? They're good, too! Not your
average-fare Heavy Metal band (don't be fooled by the base note in this
conf!), or your Sominex-based Bar act...these guys know how to lay a
groove. Also, the band has a clean, tight sound, with all instruments
and vocals well distinguished. Sluggo offers a somehwat lighter fare
of mainstream R&R...performing covers by INXS, P Floyd, Jeff Beck,
Alanah Miles...you get da picture. My favorite song of the set was
their opening number, which just happens to be an original composition.

In summary...as someone who usually doesn't care to go out to catch
live music, I'd go hear Sluggo again, and would recommend them to
    others in this conference.

    Buck E Lee

PS - As far the openers...Bleck-O! The only hope was for the woman
vocalist/bassist who was a cross vocally and stylistically between
janis joplin and that woman from Concrete Blonde. The guitar player
in the bowling shirt was obnoxious and just had to go!

>Buck E Lee

Buck, Does this have anything to do my comments about RR and Jake E Lee?

As for Sluggo - Good selection of tunes and done really well. It was too bad
they couldn't have played longer. I know that Karen was not happy with the
monitors or the general sound when she heard the last band, but they did an
outstanding job despite the soundman...

I want to hear you again sometime when the sound is right. I'm not a musician,
(but I collect stereo gear as a hobby) ;-) My first impression is usually based
on the sound and it was not good last Thursday.

It's easy to criticize sound people since I've never done it - although my
neighbor might disagree...

Seems like bad sound is going around lately huh between Sluggo and Paris
Burning

I will see you again when I get a chance.

>>Buck E Lee

>Buck, Does this have anything to do my comments about RR and Jake E Lee?

Nope. Our own Goddess du F-dot calls me Buckeley. I think it has a
nice ring to it, so I modified it phonetically to read Buck E Lee.

As far as Jake and Randy go, methinks we shouldn't discuss it anymore...
    it's like religion or politics...too controversal! 8^)

>I want to hear you again sometime when the sound is right. I'm not a musician,

The only think I heard weird was that annoying monitor feedback. Also,
the solos could have been louder.

Sluggo will be appearing at a benefit to raise money to aid a Worcester
resident who is in a diabetic coma - this friday April 24th at the P.N.I.
Club (dont' ask me what it means!) off Kelly Square, Worcester, Ma.
If you're in the neighborhood and could help with a donation ( i think
the cover is $5) then please stop by....there is also another band
playing with us, I believe their name is BiG Dog ......./k

I think the P.N.I is a Polish club with a decent size hall down stairs.
Off of Kelly Sq. you head down Millbury St.
Check with your band mates to confirm this, because I'm far from
    certain.
