Blow off these shi-shi mary rock clothes shops! Go down to your local
Harley Davidson shop and outfit yourself for rock n roll there.

what do real men ride when they don't start? ;-)

I have a particular hat in mind that I doubt any biker shop would
carry. It is a black French-beret-type hat that I've only seen one
guitar player wear. Really cool looking!

Otherwise, I'm more of a sportcoat with t-shirt, jeans, & sneakers type
of guy. Although, I've been known to have exotic taste in underwear ;-)

Gee... I THOUGHT there was a topic on stagewear... But I can't find it
either.

Anyhow, leather ain't too cool (double meaning here) on stage, IMHO.
the britches aren't bad, but a leather coat on stage is a sure way to
dehydrate quick.

Anyhow, Mike, I'd suggest you stroll thru the ladies department of a few
stores...Merry-Go-Round, UpsNDowns, even KMart has some COOL stuff you can
get...and a LOT cheaper than at a rocknroll store.

I think that a band that dresses as part of their *production* goes a lot
further on local circuits than one that doesn't. IMHO, a lot of a bands sucess
has to do with how they "look" on stage.

Interesting you should ask, because the club we've been playing at suggested
we all go up to Denver and buy some more stagewear for the whole band.
As it is now, only the drummer and I really "dress" for the occasion. I think
stage wear is going to come back in a big way - no more jeans. Smoke, lights,
flashpots, and all seem really popular here in the larger venues.

In my VERY humble opinion, when I saw Hardball, I liked the way Tom
dressed for your gig as opposed to the way your drummer dressed.
I just thought it was a cooler look...more original, less cliched, etc.

My suggestion, DON'T GO TO DENVER!

Toms got a hip look - I agree. You should see some of the pix we
got that night... But anyway, seems to me that when the club owner
is holding a 1 year contract for house band (for HardBall) and he
suggests you see a fashion consultant, ya go see one. :)

MRG is great for the ladies - the men's clothes seem like a cross
between GQ and low_IQ .... not much for `performing' clothes.

    the way to go)
765.20music scene is pretty good here!HAVASU::HEISEREpiscopal=PepsiCola spelled sidewaysTue Jun 11 1991 15:1917
>    YUCKO< no wonder the music scene is so bad back there :*}

it might be in Colorado where you're from, but it isn't in Phoenix.
GUITAR magazine has an annual poll where it rates large city music
scenes on a national basis. Phoenix was 13th out of the top 20 last
year (San Francisco was #1, Boston #2). This year they broke it down
by regions (East, South, North, West) and Phoenix was well into the
    West's top 10.

>    hey get hip will ya :*}
> this is the 90's (fun and functional clothing dude :*) )

First of all, I'm too modest to dress like some do. Secondly, I'd
rather let my music do the talking. There are a lot of hip bands out
there that need a tailor a lot worse than I do ;-)

> I always thought the Partridge Family had a positive stage pressence.

not to change the subject too much, but do you people remember Danny?
Well he's been living in Phoenix for a while and working as a DJ for
Power 92 (rap, dance pop, wretch, etc. station). He was fired last
month because of the bad publicity he brought on the station. All the
media told us was that he was beaten (very badly by the looks of him) up
by a male tranvestite posing as a female prostitute.

However, I have a friend that works in the Phoenix PD computer center.
He told me that the official police report said he was "...beaten up for
inserting a coke bottle into the prostitute's anus, once he discovered
what he was really dealing with".

Sounds like a major rathole to me!

Back to the subject at hand (stage attire), I personally don't like the
spandex look much. I don't see it coming back either, at least without
something over it. Most of the rock bands I've seen around here lately
wore the standard torn up jeans (sometimes over spandex) and t-shirts
    (often ripped up).

I like Scary's approach, but I might go with a dark or other then white
t-shirt. But leather does get pretty hot...

Or you could just go with the Red Hot Chili Peppers approach...getcha a
pair of tube socks from K-mart. Not only is it inexpensive, but you
get a SPARE in the package!

That's kinda funny. It might take quite a few guesses for you to

Damn, I'm glad I'm in Boston where stagewear means "uniqueness and
    originality".

Things I've seen on band members in the Boston area:
    		Crazy band/concert t-shirts
    		Chuck's (Converse HighTops)
Over-dyed jeans (faded jeans dyed a different color)
silk shirts, worn open over band/concert t-shirts
    		knee-high moccasins
jeans cut off into above-the-knee shorts
clothing with writing ALL over it
    		army jackets
    		jean's jackets cut into vests
chains rapped around a few times for a belt
baseball caps worn backwards (and/or flipped up)
    		t-shirts cut into tank-tops
    		boots/shoes with loads of buckles
poet's shirts with lots of long dangling necklaces (like
    			the ones on leather thongs)
    		DocMartins (no red laces, please!)
Polyester suits (yes, believe it or not)
Snug black jeans with snakeskin boots
    		Leather fringe vests
    		Weird hats

This list could go on and on. MY point is that you don't need a ROCK
'n ROLL store to get cool clothing. Mix and match from different
places to get your overall look. Merry Go Round does have some COOL
men's stuff--when you pair it with something from the Salvation Army or
    Goodwill.

I think the "industry" is so diluted with look-a-likes right now that
in order to make a lasting impression, you have to be unique.

Berets can be found just about anywhere, usually in the women's hat
section of any major store. (But possibly not in the summer in
    Phoenix!)

Gotta agree with Pete (Say WOT ?!). Women love 'em.
If you play a club and women come to molest the musicians, then the
guys flock in to try swoop 'em while your playing, then the bar owner gets
rich, then you get rich.

BUT -

Just say NO to woodies and spandex. :)

    spandex in them..

    They are not shiny...

They look fine on *some* women (on others it's looks like a bag full of
cottage cheese ... yeaarf ...). A few years back (quite a few, now
that I think about it ...) all the up and coming metal bands were
dripping in it - then they'd be out on the road for a while, come back
home wearing denim and leather. Watching the metal bands on MTV, I
don't see much spandex these days ...

If everyone is wearing denim, and a band comes out wearing

How about thrash metal poseurs? You know, the types with the Metallica
t-shirt from 1983 or an obscure Belgium death metal band called
Zargbitidickus? Who also know the latest style of moshing, and know
how to stage dive "just so",and criticize the scene for being "too
lame" or full of "poseurs"? Ho!ho!

Personally,i enjoy wearing my Madonna Blonde Ambition t-shirt to
Napalm Death gigs just to p*** these nerds off.

Still looking for a short coat with swallow tails, tuxedo
jacket. I've priced a few both in Burlington, VT and
Worcester, MA and they're around $140 - $160 used. The only
place I found in my price range ($50 - $70) didn't have my
size. (Need a medium-large or large.)

If anyone has one kicking around in the closet that they
don't use/need, please let me know. Even better would be a
pointer to any stores that anyone may know about that sells
such items of clothing. I remember a place in Boston that I
was at back in 1985 that sold foil style shirts, keyboard
print ties, and other various rock band clothing.

I'll be in the South Boston area next weekend.

        Thanks in advance. . .

        Matt
