321.0. "Alice In Chains" by RAVEN1::JERRYWHITE (Joke 'em if they can't take a ...) Mon Dec 03 1990 09:55

I just got a tape by these guys called "Facelift". Very good stuff,
but hard to put a tag on. It's soulful like The Cult, but at times
it's VERY heavy like Celtic Frost. Anybody else heard of 'em ?

btw - the first song is called "We Die Young" and the first 2 lines go
    like this ...

    "Scary's on the wall ..."
    "Scary's on his way ..."

Ya gotta love it ! 8^)

Scary (not on the wall, possibly on my way, depending where you're at ..)

IMO they were terrible on stage. Lead singer was a stiff the whole
night... Not a band you want opening for Extreme...

Their cover art is of this dude with what looks like little
pony-tail/braids in his hair screaming at the top of his lungs & it's
got some wierd pattern in the background with all these psychedelic
colors. Pretty wierd; guess it goes hand in hand w/ thier music.

Hey Buckley, give 'em another chance, eh? Most bands sound like total

    HEY,
Me and Buck do agree on something, It's amazing!!!!!!!!!!!
These guys are boring and have no sense of melody.
Maybe if I was on ac*d I might enjoy them but since
those days are long gone they have no chance in my book!
"THE MAN IN THE BOX" is very boring and sums up what I wish
they would do:EX-"I'm the man in the box drowning in my
SH*T." I mean who in their right mind would like that?!!?!?

I keep hearing a song by this band on Z-rock that's such an utter rip
off of a Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush song that it's pathetic! The
intro and break of this song consist of the main riff from "The Answer"
    in 'em.

I just picked up Facelift last week at the CD library and I have to
say that overall I like their sound. It is quite 'Cultish' as said
earlier but has a slightly harder edge to it. What I like is that they
have tried to create a sound of their own and mostly succeeded.
Musically there are some good riffs in there with an above average
drummer helping out. The singer is no screamer, though the lyrics are
a bit wierd, and often offensive, and matches the general feel of the
    band.

All in all I like this first album and look forward to hearing more
from them in the future. I am sure they will get even better.

The not so new but most recently released Alice in chains disc is a
mini EP titled SAP, it has 5 tunes on it, 4 are acoustic and are
totally cool, the 5th song isn't listed on the cover of the disc, it is
just a bunch of noise and screwing around for the most part, I find it
quite humorous that they call the song Love Song.

The video that came with the CD when facelift was first released is
real cool to. Unfortunately you have to buy it seperatley from facelift

I forgot to mention in my last note that there's an interview with the
guitar player for AiC in the current Guitar World magazine.

It's fairly interesting reading, a couple of things he said I thought
    were worth writing in here.

One was that he said when he first wrote the song "Down in a Hole", he
didn't think the band would ever want to record it 'cause it was so
light, but he played it for 'em and they loved it! I'm kind of
surprised, since it's one of my favorite tracks, and doesn't sound out
of place to me at all!

He also said that he was sure people would take the song Junkhead out
of the context in the album and think they were "waving the flag" for
drug use. But he said that in the album context, it was actually a
very strong statement against drug use, since several of those songs
there were intended to be played together, as a medly. Junkhead, Dirt,
Godsmack, Hate to Feel, and Angry Chair all go together as a set.

I've been listening to 'Dirt' a bit lately. I didn't expect to like it much,
but thought I'd give it a fair shot. It surprised me a bit - there's some
decent stuff on here! It's not a great album or anything, but it doesn't
really s*ck like I thought it would!

My favorite tune has to be "Rain When I Die" - this tune is awesome! It
totally reminds me of early Blue Oyster Cult, right down to the harmony
vocal lines and the cool odd-time-signature guitar riffing!

I also liked "Junkhead" a lot, too. That trilogy (or whatever it's supposed
to be) is all pretty decent.

Their sound grated on me after a while, so it really had to be a well written
song in order for me to like it. "Rain When I Die" definitely falls in that
category, as may some of the other ones.....

I remember pissing on this band because I hated the
song Man in the Box... but I'm a convert to AiC now
because of DIRT. Incredible album... well, actually
I tend to rewind side one over and over again, and
then play the first song on my Singles soundtrack
to pick up my other fave Alice toon. I'm so bored with
most bands, and new bands, but this album really
    surprised the heck outta me.

I think the reason the songs are so good, is because
Layne Staley (especially) and Jerry Cantrell are both
f***ed up with drug/booze problems (read the long article
in Rolling Stone a few months back?) and that sense of
frustration, and desperation makes a nice cesspool of
emotions to draw from when writing such wonderfully
depressing, and angry songs. Unfortunately, the best efforts
of many bands, in my opinion, are usually created when they're
dirtbags (i.e. GnR, Motley Crue, Aerosmith, etc.)

some of their early stuff and I don't think its quite as dark in its lyrics.

I bought the new CD this weekend, and I'm disappointed. Although I have to
admit I expected to be, considering "GRIND" is the tune chosen to promote it. I
think "GRIND" is OK, but doesn't come close to their earlier stuff. (Just to
put things in perspective, "Dirt" is one of my favorite albums of all time.)

They seem to have lost their versatility... all the songs sound the same. And
Cantrell just doesn't stand out. It did take a while for some of the stuff on
"Facelift" to grow on me, so maybe the same will happen with this CD. But,
truthfully, I don't exactly have a burning desire to listen to it again.

In case anyone wanted to know more about the Jerry Cantrell tune, this
    is the info I got...

The tune is called "Leave me Alone" and it's written and performed
mainly by Jerry Cantrell & Sean Kinney. It seems with Layne being
in an addictions program of some sort and bassist Mike Innez of doing
some side project including work with Ozzy, Jerry and Sean decided to
goof around with a tune. They did pretty good IMHO!

The tune can be found on the new soundtrack for "The Cable Guy"...
The new Jim Carrey flick, apparently Jim picked most of the songs
for the Sndtrk, other groups include Silverchair & White Zombie if
    I'm not mistaken.

just basically stands their holding himself up on the mic stand.... The
mosh pit was going rather well though!

321.222Stop Being so CriticalLUNER::BIRDWed Jul 24 1996 10:0512
You guys have got to be less critical, most bands I've seen doing
MTV Unplugged weren't doing anything amazing. The fact of the matter is
that all in all they sounded good, hell they haven't played a gig
together in three years. Thats not to mention Layne was fresh out of
rehab. I think Down in a Hole sounded mint the harmonies by Staley and
Cantrell were perfect. Then the rest of the band sounded Pretty damn
good too. Just try to chill on being such a critic and try to remember
these are people too, and they have problems like you and I.

I just finished watching the Unplugged show and it was pretty good.
What were you watching. Layne was a little frail looking, but I
thought his voice was fine. The only real surprise I had was that I
never realized Jerry Cantrell sang as much as he does on the recordings.

I would certainly place it above alot of the "Unplugged" specials I've
seen. Alot better than the Nirvana one.

    Except for this one!!!!!
    Just kidding.
But seriously, I didn't like this at all. I know that vocalist have to
warm up and such, but I think he didn't warm up enough.
Layne was more than frail looking, he looked like he was 'hurting'
    bigtime.

He did do an Unplugged show. I've seen parts of it. He started out kinda
tentative but realy started flying at the end. They play it once in a while

I wish they'd replay that instead of the 'fn stupid dating game show they
have on all the time.

I got to watch the "unplugged" MTV thingy on the weekend (thanks to
Paully) of A.I.C. and was very impressed. A little worried at first
when Layne first started singing "Nutshell", he just sounded off. But
got in the groov after a couple of notes. He looked real rough too!
Not the tough kinda rough, but the unhealthy, death warmed over rough!

All in all, I will most likely pick up the unplugged CD sometime in the
    future.

I picked up the cd this weekend, and it is really good. There is a
new song that Mtv didn`t show, it`s called "Killer is Me" and it is
cool. I noticed that they have overdubbed the vocals on the disc.
Sounds lots better. The Mtv presentation was definately lacking in
the vocals dept, but it`s all good on the disc.

Just heard an interesting piece of trivia on the radio. During the
taping of the Unplugged special, there were 400 fans in
attendance...including all 4 members of Metallica.

Paully, when my buddies meet the guys from Metallica at the
Lalapooluza, they said that Metallica demanded that the record company
fly them in for the taping. Apparently they are all very good friends,
and there is one part in the CD, where it sounds like the bassist is
doing Enter Sandman, and the drummer comes in for second or two, then
they go into one of their own tunes...
