746.0. "Concert halls and searches" by MSBCS::QUEBEC (Times tickin' away) Mon Oct 08 1990 13:00

I have a question in regards to how far a club/concert hall can go
in searching you before they are invading your rights.

This past Friday my sister and I attended a show at the Orpheum in Boston.
Upon entering the Orpheum we were searched, the basic pat down which is
not unusual. After patting me down the guard proceeded to open my pocketbook,
shuffle things around no problem. Next she took things out of my pocketbook,
my make up case, opened the case, took out the make up and opened each
make up compact.

Next was my sister, it took them over 5 minutes to search her. With
her the guard opened her wallet, change purse, telephone book and the same
routine with her make up case.

In my opinion this is VERY extreme. Has anyone else ever experienced
such a search??? Who could we contact in regards to something like this?

          A little advice:

Leave all that stuff locked in the trunk of your car!!

    Yo Rae...

Yeah, I was at the Extreme show, and felt the pat-down itself was also
    EXTREME!

They like felt everything on my body...felt something in my pocket...
reached down and pulled it out (no wisecracks guy...it was a pack of
trident gum...in foil wrapper, about the last two pieces)...saw it was
foil...figured it was drugs, and proceeded to unravel the foil until
they found out it was only gum. They did this all the while I was
saying to him "it's gum...it's only gum...hey dude, it's just gum...)
It took about 5 mintues to frisk me...no wonder there was a huge line
waiting to get in da joint!

Buck, who felt it was a bit too much!

Yea -I went to a concert where they frisked from top
to bottom and all around. Through the purse and my
coat pockets. It seems to be worse now-a-days...

I carry a pocket knife with me, and I usually slide it into
my sneaker [vertically, next to my ankle] before I get up to
    	the door.

Besides that, the only thing I carry with me is my wallet.

Basically, the less you take with you the better off you'll
    	be.

But at what point are they infringing on your rights??? We must
    have some in this respect.

I know what you're saying ... your pocketbook is personal, and
no one should be rummaging through it.

BUT ... how much of that stuff do you actually have to bring
with you to see a concert? Their main concern is the safety
of the band and other concert-goers [except for the few that
get off on their "ego trips"], and they have to take steps to
insure that safety by making sure that you don't have any weap-
ons in the pocketbook/purse/etc. They're probably looking for
    	drugs also.

I don't know what the law is, but I'm sure that they're not
breaking it ... or else someone would have said something by
    	now.

I'm not concerned about them rummaging thru my things but taking
them out to open them up is a little much. I have never had this
done at any other place. Some things are esstential to carry. When
I go out I carry the bare minimum and sometimes nothing at all.

I have never been searched, it must be the halo that shines above my
head! 8^) At places like Wembley arena, the only time that you are
likely to be searched is if you are carrying something and then they'll
just take a look inside, checking for weapons or cameras. If you go
to a place like the Astoria (very rough, dive) then they'll frisk you.
They have always waved me past, but the men who accompanied me always
get frisked.....it MUST be my halo!!!

I've never seen anyone have such a complete search as the one Rae
described, but I'm sure they are perfectly withing their rights.

    Flip

ps.	Next time I'm going to go in, swinging a pair of rubber marigold
gloves and see if that won't tempt them to search me!!! Knowing my
luck they'll probably just look inside the gloves! 8^)

I have gone though this also.. I never bring a purse with me so its
    just the frisk over..

If I wear boots, I put my knife and butts in there, they never check..

They are just trying to protect people I'm sure, people do get
stabbed or flipped out on drugs at most concerts..

They probably have the right because they own the place. Just like
if you own a house and you have the right not to let anyone in..
because its your property.. ?? This is just a guess, but I bet
thats how its covered by the law.

It's unreal until you get stabbed by someone while trying to
find your seat and then you'll wonder why they DIDN'T have
    	a metal detector.
