418.0. "Love/Hate" by NAVIER::STARR (Captain Jack will getcha high tonite...) Fri Apr 27 1990 15:49

Love/Hate is:

Jizzy Pearl - Vocals
Skid - Bass guitar, vocals
Jon E. Love - Lead and rhythm guitar, sitar, vocals
Joey Gold - drums

Their album is called 'Back Out In A Red Room', and is on CBs. Its ok, but
nothing great. Sorta like Tesla, but without quite the same musical
intelligence, and not nearly as good guitar work. It was produced by Tom
Werman, and sounds pretty decent. The best song is called "Fuel To Run".

(Oh, and it was mixed and partially produced by David Kahne, who worked with
Translator, the Red Rockers, Romeo Void, and the Bangles...)

A friend of mine is supposed to let me borrow this album,
and I was going to ask how good/bad it was ... but I kept
    	forgetting.

He said he loves it, so we'll see.

I picked up a batch of stuff, and Love/Hate was amongst it and I
    love it!!

Musically its not technically brilliant, just straight ahead, no
frills tongue in cheek rock and roll with a funk groove and I think
    its awsome.

    Good party music.

I heard "Black Out in a Red Room" this w'end, and I didn't
    	like it a whole lot.

Maybe it takes getting used to ... we'll see.

From what little I heard on the HBB this morning they
    	aren't a bad bunch...

I didn't care for their acoustic version of "She's an Angel"
(?) mostly because it didn't sound good without an electric
    	guitar.

    Blackout in the Red Room,
I,ve heard some bands over the years,so of course influences can
be heard, however I bought the C.D.and when it's cranked up it rocks
Buy it,only beware the cliched lyrics.

Love/Hate is good or.....for rock band I don't really know.
Because they aren't a type of music I am listen to, but I like
Skid, he is cool. When he played with AC/DC at the Centrum right
after the show, he walked around the parking lot by himself and
carried couple bottles of Bud. He asked a friend of mine if he
wants one and from there we hung around with him for couple hours
then we left. Same thing with the second night we saw him again
this time was cool, we came to the Centrum Inn. that where he stay
a He got me and my friend baked.

    Yes!!!!!
They are very glam/metal-ish, that's my style thow!

I think they are one of the best new bands around today!

    Anyone else feel the same?

I picked up 'Wasted In America', and gave it a listen on the way in this
morning. I don't have time right now for a full review, but I will say
that this album ROOLZ! Although their first album was good, this one is
similar but much better - better songwriting, better production, better
playing. Cool stuff!!!

Funny, I felt the opposite, Alan. I guess I haven't listened to it
enough yet but I really don't think (from what I've heard) it's half as
good as the old one. Sounds like they got a little lazy IMO. I have
to admit though, I liked some of the format changes.

Yeah, it takes a touch getting used to. But once I did, I find that I really
like his voice now!

Overall, I gotta say that I'm wicked impressed with this album, it's one of
my favorites of the year so far! Really good songwriting and arrangements,
all the songs are a bit varied so you don't get bored listening to the
entire album. That's a nice touch!

So far, "Cream", "Spit", and "Wasted In America" are my favorites.

It's a shame. Another classic example of an exellent band with NO label
    support.

I'm starting to think that record companies believe in the tooth
fairy, coz they certainly ain't giving new bands any support anymore.

Tony: While I was never very 'hip' on Love/Hate...I agree that record
company are inhaling lately!! A new band needs marketing and support
before they will do well and record companies just aren't doing
that. FWIW-Some record companies sign a band and then drop them after
one album to write them off as a tax break.

Saw them at the Rockpile last night too....They were OK, but
didn't impress me that much.....and the singer looks wicked nasty...
gotta get rid of those chops...he reminds me of Neil Simon from hell...
but not like I judge a band on their appearance....they had this really
hot roady though...(Jim, you know which one I'm talking about).....;)
