I ran across of friend of mine last weekend and found out that he has
been in the business of mail order buying and selling records/CDs/tapes.
After looking over some of the notes in this conference, I think that
people may benefit from his services. He is very knowledgeable and fair.

382.3long answer to a short question!AKOMI2::OROURKEI'll_sleep_when_I'm_deadSun Nov 13 1994 13:1343

    Hi Al,

I joined BMG about 2 years ago and have been happy with them. You
get the 'free' stuff just as they say. They will send you a package
in the mail about every 3 weeks. You'll have a couple of weeks to
look it over and send back your order. The only thing is you HAVE to
reply or you'll be sent the selection of the month....which is not what
    you EVER want to do.

If you don't want anything, just check that off and send it back.
Never expect a deal on 'normal' club prices. They are usually $14 to
$17 per single disk. The way you get a deal is with the 'buy one get
two free' or '2/3 off' sales they run all the time.

Don't forget you pay shipping and handling and sales tax even on 'free'
    disks.

Example: My last order was for one $15.98 CD with two free. I paid
$1.83 per disk shipping and handling and a total tax of $1.48. So, the
total price I paid was $22.95 or $7.65 per disk.

If you 'forget' to send in your card you wind up just receiving your
selection of the month (usually something you would NEVER want) and
paying $19 for it, so if you're no good with keeping up with your
    mail...forget it!

BMG has a decent selection (like it better than the Columbia House
catalogues I've seen), but the disadvantage of any club is you have
to wait a bit for new releases.

I've never been sent the wrong disc by mistake or received junk mail
that I could trace to them. They offer occasional deals that are
really cheap ($2-3 casettes or $4-5 CD's). One time I wrote and
complained that the battery door of the CD cleaner I ordered was
missing. They weren't able to replace it so they told me to keep the
unit (about $35) for free! :)

Good luck if you join. You really have little to lose. With BMG you
only have an obligation to buy 1 CD and then you can quit.

I've been in BMG for at least 3-4 years now, and have been in
Columbia for at least 5, and actually I like Columbia House's
selection better than BMG's. But overall, BMG is much better.

Columbia House runs "bargain sales" all the time, but the
catch is that they make you buy at least 1 regular-priced CD
before you can take advantage of the bargains, and by the time
you do that the end result is that it's no bargain.

Like Jen said, by the time you're a "preferred member" you'll
be paying about $7-$8 each for the CD's you order.

	AL,

I've joined BMG aroung 15 times in the last 4-5 years. The
selection might not be as good as Columbia house but you get anywhere
from 6-10 for the price of one....CH is get tyen buy eight then get
preferred member status. Duh, do the math ,BMG gives you those disks
you use to have as albums but want on disk plus a few new selections
for $34.18/10 discs as opposed to CH and 161.84/18 discs.
thats $9.00 per disc vs. $3.40 per disc

	You make the call

Does anyone else get broken cd cases alot from BMG or is it just
bad luck. In the past couple of months I must have got about 5 or
6 busted up holders....... I think they use cheap one's or something.

BTW - I just got 3 more in the mail yesterday and the bill was just
over $20. And no broken cases ;-)
    						Later,

382.8new service from BMGPOOKY::OROURKEheaven help the heartWed Jul 19 1995 15:4515

FYI - BMG has just started to offer a new 'service'. On 'occasion'
they will send out a brochure with 'sample' CD's in their 7 listening
categories (i.e. Pop, Rock, Alternative, Jazz, Classical, etc). Each
sample CD will have 2 songs from 5 'new' acts for a total of 10 songs.

They will be free except you have to pay their normal shipping &
handling fee (currently $2.22 per disk). They say it is their way of
letting their listeners get exposed to up-and-coming acts.

Also they say they'll send 5 $2 coupons (one for each of the album
sampled) good at Blockbuster Music Stores (has anyone seen one of these
    yet???).

Seriously, it's better than Columbia for prices. But probably
not as good for selection, although it still isn't bad.

I got a mailing from "CD Music Company" in Rimini Italy last week.
It contains rare live and studio discs that have been remastered from

Big Music, Nikko records and Cocomelos records. Discs are $22.00/

Jen just reminded me about this, even though she didn't know it
    	at the time:

If there is no Blockbuster Music store near you to buy the CD's
that BMG features on their sampler CD's, they provide a number
on the invoice that you can call to place an order.

HOWEVER, when I got mine I looked at it and threw it away, since
I wasn't planning on ordering any of them.

So if anyone kept the invoice and has the number, could you post
it here so that others might be able to order something they like?

    	Thanks.

382.32CDNow, $21.97 + shipping for import of dr. butcherSUBSYS::MSOUCYFri Mar 29 1996 09:4012

I just placed an order through CDNow for Doctor Butcher's self titled
release because it is an import (at this time) and according to the
keeper of the Savatage homepage, he recommended ordering it since there
is no clue when/if it will be released in the states, and their second
release "The Good, the bad, and the butchered" is currently on hold in
the US (or anywhere else as it wasn't listed at CDNow).....also said it
has the feel to Hall of the mountain king and other sava-discs. So I am
getting it!! I love Savatage and Jon's screeching/wails! Plus he was
cool at the show I met him at!
