296.0. "HM - places to go in L.A.?" by AD::FLATTERY () Tue Jan 23 1990 13:45

I'm heading out to L.A. soon and wanted some advice on the clubs
to go to while i'm out there..........Any suggestions from you
L.A. rockers?...(or anyone else who knows there way around out there?)
also if you've got advice on fun places to eat, that'd be helpful too!
I'm assuming that the dress code remains the same for both coasts!
    Thanks alot........./karen

Lingerie is about a mile down from the ROXY on the left when heading
East (toward downtown). It shouldn't be too hard if it still has

296.29some semblance of a reviewAD::FLATTERYWed Feb 07 1990 15:1156
ok, the first night out was a monday and that apparently is the night
to go to the Whisky.....(no "e")....it was 3 bucks to get in and
something like 12 bands were playing that night. they don't break down
the drums or amps...one band just gets off the stage and the next band
jumps up, plugs in and plays. the place was jammed and my girlfriend
just stood there with her mouth open....guys with more make-up than i'd
ever dream of wearing waltzed by, girls in the sleaziest clothes i've
ever seen paraded about, women shooting up in the ladies room etc....you
    know...hollywood!! ....... i knew i was out of my element when i
found myself having a conversation with a guy on how he got his
eyeliner on so straight....(take those tips where you can get them!).
anyway, it was great, some good music, some lame.....but a very visual
experience.....went to the Rainbow Bar and Grill which is a very hot
spot. No live music but very loud piped in rock and roll and the place
is packed on the weekends. during the week it's more bearable. we ate
dinner and found ourselves feeling sorry for a very toasted John Waite
who was sitting across from us making what i'm sure he thought was sexy
faces at us, but he just looked sad and pathetic.....we decided he was
coming down from something...he was throwing things off his table and
was sitting there all alone....i wanted to tell him to get a grip but
decided against it!.....Bill Gazzari who owns Gazarris on the strip
came over to bug us and brought us next door to his club. most of the
musicians out there can't stand him cause he's the Pay to Play king...
he figures if you want the exposure then you should ante up the money
    to play a good room....actually he's a slimeball who's just
capitalizing on his clubs location and feeding off a bunch a kids who
can't afford much of anything, never mind paying him to play his
club.. anyway, an all girl band was playing in there called Boy Blue...
    i wasn't impressed...i sing better than their lead singer.....we saw a
good band called Saigon Saloon at the Roxy...(i pleaded with the
doormen not to let any men with pink hair in that night)...and a lousy
band who are signed with Enigma Records out of Miami called Juliett....
i turned to the guy next to me and said, "excuse me, but is it me or
are these guys lame?"...he agreed...as it turned out, the people next
to us were a band from Boston called Maximum who were just signed with
Enigma and are out there recording...we were so proud of them, being from
boston and all that we bought them a beer and told them to do good and
make us proud...(just call me mom)....as a matter of fact, everyone i
met out there was from Boston, pretty weird....we saw alot of bands but
the best of the lot was Saigon Saloon...we saw one band who's name i'm
sure i'm blocking where the men wore high heels and off the shoulder
shirts with long boas or ostrich feathers around them,...which says to
me that there are no new gimmicks to get you noticed, hasn't this been
done to death?? (early motley crue etc??)....if the music isn't there,
then neither are you............it really was alot of fun, good
vacation spot....just don't try to work and vacation at the same time!
    i need a long nap................../k p.s. didn't get
to the cathouse cause that's only happening on tuesday and i had to
work...each club has a specific night for when it's really hopping, the
trick is finding out which night that is!

You see, it's an east coast plot to take over the entire world!!
Is John Waite that dude from Bad English? (i hate that group :)
Sounds like you had a rippin' time. You'll have to hit the cathouse
the next time you're in la. That place rages!

296.31Bad BabiesAD::FLATTERYWed Feb 07 1990 15:4510
Yup, that's the guy from Bad English and long before that, the Babies,
    i think....next time i go, it'll be just for vacation so i'm sure i'll
hit the rest of the places that i missed this time....we were feeling
pretty insecure before we went out figuring that all the girls in
hollywood would be unbelievably gorgeous and we would feel like ugly
old women... so a highlight of the trip was finding out that
california girls (at least the ones we met!) were bitchy, stupid, petty
and for the most part bleached and they hated us on sight....i can live
    with that........................../k
