165.0. "Soundgarden" by BUFFER::GOLDSMITH (Like a kiss from the lips of Ra) Wed Dec 20 1989 13:45

I just picked up Soundgarden's new one, "Louder Than Love".

It is a great album! VERY heavy!! It's not speed metal, but it kicks
as*!! It's crunchy and noisy, typical to Seattle bands, but not as
noisy as Nirvana. They are much more defined and a lot more powerful!

I would definetly have to recommend picking this up. A definite EHM
    type band. Eh, Pete?

They have one other album, if I am correct. It was an Indie, released
on SST records. The new one is on A&M, and you should not have trouble
    getting this one.

There have been some comparisons to Led Zeppelin, as there are a couple
of Zeppelin-esque riffs. Not enough to make a comparison, though.
Certainly no Bonham-style ripoffs. Of course, any review of these guys
you see will undoubtedly mention the song "Big Dumb Sex" which is about
the abuse of sex in todays society. The chorus:
"I know what I'm going to do... I'm gonna fk, fk, fk, fk you!"

They are currently touring with Voivod and will be in Boston on January
21, I beleive. Don't miss this show! I saw a clip of them live. They
    kick!

But, Gene, I give the album a thumbs up. One of this seasons finest.

I'll have to check this band out. A few people who's musical tastes
I respect (and reflect) recommend this band, and I've heard they
    have a healthy underground audience.

Can you provide any more info. on the band Pete/Steve?

Well, they come from the budding music scene in Seattle. They come
from the likes of "industrial noise" bands like Nirvana.

They have one previous album, which I haven't heard, but my friend who
was able to compare the two said the first one didn't sound like the
    second.

I, personally, don't find them too much like J.A., but similar. They
aren't as funky or jazzy as JA. The album is very heavy and noisy, but
more defined than Nirvana, who are a lot noisier. By noise, I mean
like lots of overpowering distortion, not well defined vocals, etc...

Soundgarden is noisy, like Nirvana, but a lot more powerful. It's not
speed or anything, but it is real heavy.

Pete, you should get the album. I think you said you only had a
single. What song was the single, BTW?

    This band is very good!!!
I picked up Louder than Love and have listened to it twice,
and I love it!!! This is a very powerful sounding band, very
ballsy, very aggressive, grindingly loud and obnoxious.
I believe the single Pete has must be "Ugly Truth" because
that song reminded me slightly of Jane's Addiction. As for the
rest of the album, I don't really know who you could compare
them to. Some of their stuff sounds a bit reminiscent of heavier
Led Zeppelin work, just riffs basically, listen to "Get on the Snake"
    for an example.
I personally think they sound a lot like Samhain or Danzig,
    especially Danzig.

They are a fun, loud nad-crunching sounding band!!!

I've listened to it twice so far, but I can't really say
    	that I like it.

I hear a mixture of U2 (who I don't like all that much) and
The Cult (who I like alot). I think it's the The Cult in-
fluence that will make me give it another chance, but for
some reason I don't think it'll be enough to get me to like
    	it.

So far, the only song that really sticks out is "Big Dumb
Sex" ... the guitar riff in that song is great!!

Badmotorfinger is a killer album!!!!
It's much better than Louder Than Love.
Badmotorfinger has deeper, more furious, and more heavy-metalic sound.
(But it's not speed metal.)
Especially, the singer got real soulfull.
Just try to listen.

I saw Soundgarden open for GnR last night. This band SUCKS!!! I can
say that with assurance. All I could think of during their set was
Spinal Tap!!! I was wating for the lead guitarist to bring out a
violin, and try and play the violin, his guitar, and a guitar in a
guitar stand, all at the same time (remember that scene?). I also had
visions of that 18" "Stonehendge" coming down from the rafters!

This band was noise. Only the drummer was good imho. Bad songs,
boring stage personalities. The Centurm crowd HATED them. The band
knew it too. The singer was pissed when they finished, and said as he
left "Don't applause, really, it's ok". They had two encores scheduled
on the set list they wisely did not play.

    a -1 on a scale of 5.

Another no vote for Soundgarden. I hate it when I see a band when I haven't
heard any of their stuff, but this band only had one speed. Too many songs
sounded the same.

Spinal Tap? Maybe - the drummer seemed quite live though...

I borrowed SG 'BMF' over the weekend from a friend, because
I like the tune "Outshined' I hated it at first, but it
has grown on me. Anyway, 'Outshined' and 'JCP' aren't that
bad. But the other songs on the first side, seem to be
a bit alternative for my tastes (kinda how I feel about
Nirvana). Anyway I will give the second side a listening
to sometime, but they just don't seem to be my thing.

My definition of alternative? I don't know it is just a sound.
Weird lyrics (IMO), a lot of Noise and not much music, no
rythm, that is what I mean by alternative. They are not HM
IMO, just Heavy Alternative. BTW a couple of song on the
second side are good. But the release is not consistant.
They seem to bounce back and forth between HM and Alternative.
	(Much more alternative though.)

that others have doesn't mean they are to be labled in any different

Bummed that I missed Monster Magnet, the first band. Although I
enjoyed Sweredriver in the past the most exciting bit was when they
ripped out a few bars of Sweet Leaf. I would have preferred to hear
	that.

I liked the jam although it didn't really head anywhere.

I can recall thinking places like JFK stadium, Shea, etc. were intimate
settings, now even Avalon seems huge. Axis size to Middle East
(small) works best these days for me.

Side note, after getting bored with the weak/expensive drinks I asked
for a bit less on the ice which had been nearly filling the cup
and if they're then not going to add more booze why not at least
fill the glass with the mix (Coke in this case).

	Gripe of the day.

    >Dont say everything..I like alot of different types of stuff including

    >grunge rock scene?

I like a lot of different stuff, too, but anyone who really KNOWS me
will know that there is a trend in bands that I like...MELODY! To my
ears, SG has plodding, un-melodic music. I didn't say noise...I just
find it unpleasantly un-melodic! Anywho, even the punk bands I loved
in the 70s had melody and hooks...SG just doesn't seem to do that.
Also, I hate their song arrangements (too long)...like a grungier
version of the Dead!! 8^( I'm into well-crafted songs.

Also, I really don't "get" their image (do they even have one??
Seriously). AND, I think they have one of the WORST live acts (stage
presencly speaking) of any band I see. I have seen SG in concert 3
times now, and when I see them, by the 2nd song:

    - I'm really bored
    - I'm getting a headache
    - I want them to leave the stage

...and that's just me being honest...they really bother me, seriously!

Now, I loved WASP, and I'm sure they gave some people a headache and
all the bad vibes I get from SG, but to me, they were high energy
punk-influenced metal, and their tunes had some cool hooks, and even
    some melody to em!!

That, in a nutshell, is why I'm really not into this band

The first time I saw them on MTV I turned it on just after the intro,

Then I realized they were serious, or at least thought they were.

Lead singer chews marbles, lead guitarist has stubs for fingers, but other
than that they're pretty good....NOT!

I still get a chuckle every time I see 'em. I keep thinking the talent

Well, I jut picked up the BadMotorFinger album by these guys...my
opinion on it in a few lines..., anyway's, I figured I'd check the
notes file and see what other people thought of these guys. Turns out
they don't get a very good rating by the "usual" noters of this
conference. This figures. Reading through the repliess in this note
there were such entries as the singer having a "weak" voice (WHAT?!?),
the band having no melodies (WHAT?!?), boring (EXCUSE ME?!?)...I just
couldn't believe what I was reading...actually (no flame intended)
though given the "these-guys-are-great hype" bestowed upon many of the
bands in this notesfile (most of which personally I think are only o.k.
...at best) I can understand why these guys aren't liked. I guess I
come from the old school of what REAL Hard Rock is defined as...and in
my "humble" opinion these guys are IT!!! As far as the singer being
"weak", gimme a break - he has got to have on of THE best rock voices
around. Granted, these guys are not defined as in th vein of "todays"
heavy metal classifications - they're more of the way I expected the
pioneers of heavy metal sound to progress...which is just Heavy Rock
(ala Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Bloodrock...etc...).

Sorry for the book I've written here but when a truly GREAT album like
BadMotorFinger comes out and doesn't get the appreciation it most

Weak voice my a$$, Chris Cornell has a wicked powerfull voice! In
fact, I think he sounds a little bit like Dio on 'Outshined'.
Anybody who's listened to his softer singing on Temple Of The Dog and
thinks he doesn't have a *good* voice must be hard of hearing!

And you can definately hear Black Sabbath's influence on Soundgarden.
Especially during the slow part of 'Rusty Cage'.

The noters who have put them down mainly complained about their live
performance. I've never seen or heard them live, so I don't know how
they sound that way. How do they sound live?

Ken's right, most of the people that didn't like them are either
completely biased toward pretty-boy music or just saw their live show a
a large venue. I believe their live show doesn't translate well into a
stadium sized crowd. If you notice, there are a number of us "regular
noters" who do enjoy Soundgarden. I was just listening to
Badmotorfinger this morning and it's definately got some cool stuff on
    it.

Now, I wouldn't say that they're the best band I ever heard, but
they're definately interesting and I enjoy listening to them. I have
both Badmotorfinger and Louder Then Love and think that for the most
part, BMF is the better of the two albums.

As far as Chris Cornell's voice goes, he's definately pushing it pretty
hard. When I heard him live his voice sounded kind of weak from having
been abused too much. I'm sure with some time to rest it, it sounds
much better, the studio albums show that. On the other hand, I think
his voice sounds pretty nondescript on the Temple Of the Dog material
that I've heard. It's better on the Soundgarden stuff 'cause he's
    pushing it out more.

However, I will say that I disagree with you about Eddie Veder's voice
(the guy from Pearl Jam). I like his voice much better. He has a
strong powerful voice and uses it without abusing it, where Chris
Cornell basically just screams out the lyrics (like I do when I sing).
Eddie will still have the ability to sing in 5 or 10 years, I doubt
    that Chris will.

I don't think audience reaction is a good gauge of a performance.
People seemed to be hopping around for Pantara at that show too, but
what I saw of their performance wasn't so hot. On the other hand, the
crowd was fairly sedate for Soundgarden, but I thought they played
well. The crowd went wild for Skid Row, who I thought put on a pretty
    generic performance.

    re. 137 -

Agreed, Chris Connell will probably not have a voice in (the future),
he is a screamer. As far as the singer for PJ, after a whole bunch of
listening I "might" end up liking him (more than I do now), but I don't
like having to get "used" to a singers voice. Never the less, I think
they're a really good band and I like their music.

    re.139 -

Isn't that the way it always seems to work out for an opening act?
Typically people are so psyched about seeing "the band they really came
to see" that they don't even want to acknowledge the opening band
(unless it's a Monster of Heavy Metal bill or some sort of thing like
that). It's a tough position to be put in and anyone in a band that's
been an opening act for even a club band (you get a few minutes to play -
for the experience of playing out mostly) knows how tough it can be.
Unless you're really prepared to blow the other band off the stage and
steal the show you aren't going to get anywhere with the fans/groupies/
whatevers. SoundGarden probably are not ready for the big venues
(especially supporting a group like G&R - even though I don't like them
it would be a seriously impossible task to blow these guy off the stage
in front of their fans). As far as seeing SG live, personally I
haven't but, I don't neccesarilly rate a band by their ability to play
live - you're talking to someone who's been sadly dissapointed in
concert by the like of Led Zep, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Ozzy,
Aerosmith (Tyler's voice was blown, band was more than drunk) and
quite a few other's I can't think of right now.

I agree on the opening band thing, and I also think that Soundgarden

This conversation, like most of the ones here, is really lame...

Taste is something that is an individual thing.

Everyone bickers over which groups are better. Well, here
	is my input on Soundgarden.

As I said, I bought BADMOTORFINGER, I gave it a bunch of listens
to give it a fair chance. The music got on my nerves very quickly.
The singers voice was terible with all that screaching...
I didn't not like it at all, now it just collects dust...

FWIW although I said 'PIHOS' I do not say this blindly. I have
given the majority of band with the 'Seattle Sound' a chance
and they just don't cut it, in my book.

	I bought Soundgarden - BadmotorFinger
		 Nirvana - the newest one
		 Alice in Chains - Facelift

I gave all a fair shot, I have also listened to Pearl Jam, My Sisters
	Machine.. and so on...

So I make a fair judgement on all.... When it comes right down
	to it... (IMO) Seattle Su*ks!!!!

Well to revive this long-dead topic, I heard a song off the new Soundgarden
album on the way home last night. I think it was called Spoon/spooner whatever.

I was surprised but I liked it. I never thought I hear something by them I
liked...

I agree. I hate to use a cliche but the album has a "darker" feel to the
songs than BMF; more foreboding or melancholy.

I bought the Superunknown. I just listened to it twice, so my
    impression may change later.
First of all, I LOVE BadMotorFinger. I was even surprised that the
singer improved his voice a lot then. I liked the heaviness and
aggressiveness like Black Sabath then. So, I expected more this time.
Probably, I expected too much. I was hoping that Superunknown would be
more DIRECTLY furious. Therefore, I must admit that I was a bit
disappointed when I listen to it first time. I am NOT saying that
Superunknown is a boring album, but different from what I expected. The
singer is still powerful and the band is very tight and heavy. I just
find it less heavy metal. Anyway, I hope that the album will be selling
    good because I'm their fan.

I have to disagree with the previous review. I haven't heard all of
BadMotorFinger, but what I've heard I didn't like. When I saw SG live I prayed
for them to finish... On the other hand...

This is a great album. The band is now into tempo changes, dynamics, harmony
and melody. It clocks over 70 minutes and has a bunch of great songs... I've
been burned a few times by buying an album due to songs I heard on the Radio,
then finding out that is the "best" song. So if you like Spoonman, I think
you'll love this album because that is not the best song on the album. Check
out "The Day I Tried to Live", or "Black Hole Sun".

Black hole song has sort of Pink Floydish sound to it. Spoonman and Let Me
Drown remind me of Led Zep and I've heard some early Black Sabbath - like
portions...

    down to earth.

The album is called "Down on the Upside" and the following are the only
tunes, I was able to hear...

Rhinosaur - A most excellent tune, alot like the Superunknown stuff!
Burden in my Hand - Cool tune, actually sounds like a tune from LedZep.
Never the Machine 4ever - Great track, very raunchy, kinda like 4th of
July. Written by Kim Thayil (sp?)
Blow up the Outside World - O.K., it sounds like a Beatles tune, a
little heavier, but you get the idea.
Ty Cobb - missed this one!
Dusty - Cool, didn't hear all of it.(soulmate cacklin' in my soundhole)
Pretty Noose - The first release of the album, really really cool. I
kept wahing up last night every 2 hours with one line in

Well, I moved "Ultramega OK" to the top of my listening list and
gave it a spin this morning. All I can say is that it was OK.

A far cry from the recent releases in the way of production,
sound quality and processing, for sure. Diverse selection of
songs. Chris sounds like Chris, so you know it's him that's
doing the vocals ... and the band basically sounds the same.

    Ed,
Here in the Great White North, Molson Breweries is sponsering a contest
on radio stations throughout Canada where you win tickets to see a band
play in a small club somewhere in the country. The kicker is you don't
know which band until they walk on stage. Two weeks ago, in Vancouver,
Soundgarden was the band. This past weekend it was Metallica.
Other than that, and that Soundgarden is in Lallapolooza(sp), I don't
know if they are touring by themselves.
When they do come near here, IF they come near here, I'll be getting my
tickets. (unless Smilin' Jack gets them first!!)

As most of you know, last weekend I went to Vince Neil in Toronto.
I was also suppose to go to Lallapuluza (sp) in Quebec City on the
Sunday. But due to partyin' at Vince Neil til 4 am on Saturday,
I couldn't make the 8 hr drive to Quebec City for Sunday night (and
besides I had a passenger to bring back to Ottawa, and I couldn't
get the Monday off) Anyhow, my buddies went to Quebec on the Saturday.
One of my friends plays in the NHL (Scott Pearson - Just signed
by the Toronto Maple Leafs - Monday) Scott is a huge metal-head,
and he use to play in Quebec. Anyhow they were partying in a bar
and had heard of a Metallica cover-band playing in another bar.
So Scott went up to this guy, and asked him in french, if he knew
where this other bar was. The replied he didn't speak french, so
Scott told him, he was english too. It turns out the guy is
Soundgardens tour-manager, he was there with the drummer and Guitarist
from S.G. So they are all partyin, go to the other bar, party some
more, then Scott takes these guys to Quebec's best Bar "Chez Daigot
Bear" (sp) At the end of the night the guy says, I'll leave all
you guys back-stage passes for tomorrow night...

So Sunday Night, Pearson and the other guys get their backstage
passes, meet up with the tour-guy again and they got to sit right
on stage and watch S.G. After S.G's set, they went back and partied
drinking beer, JD, eating and just hanging out with the band. Then
the guys from Metallica came in about 5 minutes before their show
and told Scott and the guys to come on out for their show too. So
the guys from S.G. gave them a ton of beers and JD to take with
them. They sat on stage with Metallica too, and the guys were talking
to them in between songs etc. And again after the Metallica set,
they went backstage and partied with all the bands...Scott said
    it was unbelievable...

Mind you Scott has partied with a bunch of Metalers, he was
at Dio's castle in LA, Dio's drummer came to Scotts house in Cornwall,
Cinderella's drummer is a friend (when Arcade played in Quebec,
he wore Scott's hockey jersey on stage), he knows Ozzy's tour-manager
and White Zombie's tour-manager and Scott also set up my tickets
to see Kiss here in Ottawa. His list of Metal-Connections just keeps
growning and growing...Again, he said it was unbelievable, and the
guys had an awesome time...And I was "suppose" to be there...Oh
well, I had the best time at the Vince Neil show...

I went to Lollapalooza July 10, and I thought that Soundgarden was
incredible. Chris Cornell's voice was extremely powerful. When they
played Jesus Christ Posse, I was amazed at the intensity of his voice
I definitly suggest seeing them if you get a chance. If you are a
musician at all you will quickly realize the talent Chris Cornell
posesses. The only problem with the concert was that the crowd was out
of control. I had to hold my girlfriend the whole time so she didn't

whole day. They are my favorite band by far. This really does suck.
I'm gona do some research today to see if I can find any sort of
    confirmation.

ian and KL buddies? Now there is a pair! ;-) I heard this yesterday
and it was confirmed this morning on WAAF, saying the split was
amicable. I have heard otherwise to the latter part of that statement.
From what I heard Chris wasn't happy with the way the band was heading
(or did I hear this in here yesterday some time??).

    Anyways, dats all folks!

I think I may have mentioned that thing about Chris, Mike. I read that
on the web over a year ago...I feared the worst and it happened.

But that means is that they will likely hook up with other
solo's/broken groups/newbies and create more stuff, right?

    It won't be Soundgarden though.

All they need is Chris. He is the band. He writes and is their distinctive
sound. The rest of them just latched on for the ride.

Ya, I gotta agree with Crazy_Al.

Kim Thayil is a wicked guitarist. Ben Sheppard is a cool bassist.
And Matt Cameron is terrific drummer.

The four of them together were Soundgarden, neither one of them as an
individual. Chris did write the majority of their material, but the
rest of the band was kickin' in towards the end.

Gawd Bless Mommy and Daddy and Soundgarden!

Yup, did you hear Kurt mention something to the extent of..

"with the early 90's grunge scene coming to an end..."

    ---good deal.
