123.0. "Red Hot Chili Peppers" by BUFFER::GOLDSMITH (Zippoman) Fri Dec 01 1989 15:18

I just did a search for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and didn't come up
with anything, so here's the Red Hot Chili Peppers topic.

I have their new album, Mother's Milk, which is a really cool album.
They are a bit like Jane's Addiction in the way that they are a heavy
mix of jazz, rock, and hard core styles. It really makes for a good,
    interesting album.

I have also heard their Abbey Road EP, which I don't care for much.
It's just not as good. I haven't heard anything else by them.

Anyone care to add a discography, and comments?

Great band Steve, but do you really think that these guys are Heavy
    Metal? I wouldn't.

They're play more like hardcore, bone-crunching, mayhem, psychedelic,
sex funk from heaven that perpetrates into your anal cavity like this
    ...SMACK.

Anyway, here's what I know of:

    	The Red Hot Chili Peppers
    	Freaky Styley
    	The Uplift Mofo Party Plan
    	The Abbey Road EP
    	Mother's Milk

Oh yes, in Anthony's own words: "We called the album 'Mother's Milk'
because it is life-giving substance - when you listen to the RHCP you
feel alive! So pay attention....becasue I'm talking!"

    Also in Anthony's own words:

"Good Time Boys kinda sounds like 12 garbage truck being driven off the
top of the Hollywood Capital Building...landing on the naked rear end
of G***** B***...totally filling his anal orifice with garbage!"

No, I suppose I wouldn't call them heavy metal, but they are definetly
HARD rock, and they have received enough attention in here without
    having a category...so...

I also read or heard somewhere that they called the new album "Mother's
Milk" because he was watching his wife breast feed their kid, and she
squirted him in the eye! Henceforth, "Mother's Milk"! Good enough
    reason for me.

Motorbreath is into these guys in a big way, so he'll definetly have
something to say, but he's not with us today.

    Red Hot Chili Peppers ROOL!!!
I'm totally into the energy of this band. They've had a
dedicated hard-core underground following for years, but now
they're getting some attention. I personally like Mother's Milk
the most of all they've done, I think it's intense, although
I really like Abbey Road EP too, especially Backwoods, and I have
    that rap totally memorized.
The band is a riot to watch onstage. Check out the videos they
have for the singles "Higher Ground" and "Knock Me Down"... that's
how they are in concert. Total spazzes.
Flea is a phenomenal bassist, and where can I get a pair of
    those stuffed-animal pants??

Anyway, check out the newest album, I'm sure you'll like it.

Hey, thanks for the compliment Mike. I still have to get some
    Fishbone material to you.

Anybody see RHCP on Arsenio Hall a while back? They played "Higher
Ground". Got it on tape... good performance. I think Flea had on his
    stuffed animal plants too.

I read an interview with Flea and Anthony a while ago. Flea's
married, has a child, and drives a Volvo. Kinda hard to imagine, eh?

As far as their sound goes, yeah, they're not totally metal but
    their energy and style qualify.

    	Awesome band!

I thought this was quite funny:

	Copied from Kerrang! without permission-

	K.	Some people take the RHCP almost too seriously. To
the point of actually wanting to be them. No, I'm not
talking about Faith No More; just their singer Mike
PAtton.....did Mike Patton rip you off hook, line and
		sinker or what?

Anthony.Yeah, my drummer says he's gonna kidnap him and shave his
hair off and saw off one of his feet. Just so he'll be
forced to find a style of his own.

	K.	Is this genuine bitterness here or just another joke?

	A.	It used to really bother me. I thought, what a drag
if people get the idea that I'm actually ripping him off!
Especially in the UK where FNM are much better known than
us. In America it's a different story, people are aware
of the profound influence we had on them.

But after it stewed in my stomach for a while, I just
decided to accept it. He is just a kid. Besides,
without his left foot, he is going to have to change....

A couple of my favourite bands thrown together...why does this never
happen in the UK?!?!?

Copied from Kerrang! without permission.

Red Hot Chili Peppers/Exodus - Kaiser Center, Oakland.

Rating:	Exodus - Stable, RHCP - Alive and screaming.

Congratulations to whoever was responsible for this bill. About time we
all started to see through the stifling blow what is catagorisation. With
Chili fans probably experiencing Esodus style real steely Thrash for the
first time, the hammerblow took a large portion of them out with vicious and
serious intentions. It was a burst that none of the 8,000 sold-out crowd
could've expected.

Exodus' "H-Team" of Holt and Hunolt were crissing and crossing, Rob McKillop
looked happier and more involved than he has for years, and john Tempesta
was warming the stoll like a veteran. Meanwhile, Zetro was taking a more
stationary, commanding role as opposed to his usual lunatic lunges - and
the problem really started right there. I'm a big fan of Zet, yet he just
never looked as though he got into it tonight. Maybe it was start-of-tour
rust, maybe he wasn't feeling well, but whatever it was, Zetro wasn't his
usual self!

Alot of "Impact is Imminent" material was aired, and as the set went on
fatigue seemed to creep slowly in. Hunolt, however, was in absolutely
manic form, a supercharged firecracker looping all over the place, whilst
Holt took a slightly more laid back yet just as effective role. This
really is an excellent guitar team.

Yet even they couldn't stop the set from sliding into mere competence.
Standouts included "AWOL", "Lunatic Parade" and a superb buzzsaw version of
"Brain Dead", but tonight was a rusty Exodus that will no doubt get much
much sharper. By the time they hit Europe with Vio-lence in support, you'll
no doubt see the fat-trimmed version!

For a small moment I contemplated attempting notes during the Chili's set,
but realising that 8,000 dancing bodies could shove my pen back into my chest,
I opted instead just to get carried away on the euphoric wave that is the
Red Hot Chili Peppers live.

Note this: everyone here, including the healthy amount of Exo-fans, loved
the peppers. Flea was the total gravitation point, a buzz-ball of muscle
taut energies whizzing and whirring, a clockwork toy out of control, a
screwed up, twisted out little demon. He handles his bass with more love,
care and knowledge than most men do their d*cks!

Keidis is a master performance artist, a character that's whacked out yet
frighteningly on top of things. He makes these Eastern European athletes
loook like paraplegics as he cartwheels, jumps, twists and crawls like one
sizzled up, serious psychiatric job. Frusciante looks like he always was
a Pepper, and at heart this is obviously a tried and tested fact. He bopped
and swayed around, picking that thing like is was a weapon.

And if they could all hit the drums as hard as Smith.....

"Fight like a brave", "Higher Ground", "Party on your pussy", a lounge-
music, nearly accoustic, snippet of "Anarchy in the UK" (Flea on soulful
vocals), the bops and tunes churned out out of this funk machine faster
than the body could dance to. Or the head could bang with.

It's like this: if you haven't hit on the Chili Peppers by now, you must
indeed be one sorry, soulless twerp.

They're what sweaty Summer nights should be; stuffed full of rock hard,
sweaty fu(n)king.....

Just looking for advise on this one.. I've never really listened to the

I agree, they should have more shows there. What did you think of the
Smashing Pumpkins?? I liked Pearl Jam much more. They seemed to be a
bit more heavy. I thought that SP's were more like the Alternative
college style music. IMO...Did you happen to go to the Lolapaloooza
Concert at Great Woods? That was an excellent show.

What I liked about WBA was it never got too hot and even though it
was a sold out show the place wasn't close to being wall to wall people.
The stage was pretty big and the sound wasn't too bad.

I liked Smashing Pumpkins. I've had "Gish" for awhile now so I was
ready for some of their not too agressive songs. Some of the crowd wasn't
though. I recall some guy screaming at them to pick up the pace.
    "Tristessa" is a great song.

I liked Pearl Jam a lot too. I had heard good reviews about them
in here(?) and elsewhere. Got the cd the other day but haven't had the
time to listen to it yet.

Unfortunately, I was out of town for Lollapalooza. I was not
happy. Some friends had excellent seats for the 2nd show too.

act stupid, even ludicrous at times, but they're having a hell of a lot
more fun than Kix (or the likes of). And they're making a lot more $$$!
With over 73 minutes of music on Blood Sugar Sex Magik, they keep your
ears busy. We've already determined that some of you have lazy ears,

I got this a few weeks back and I like it a lot. I like the change tempo sort of
stuff that they do. I bought it based on Under the Bridge and Blood Sugar Sex
Majik.

They got a really good drum sound. Must have had a good engineer.

showed some footage of the band with him at one of the Lallopooza shows
    and he sounded great.

One thing I thought was cool was that he looks a little older, has
thinning hair and all, but they still used him. It's nice to see a
