Rick called me this morning and told me all about the tee-shirts
etc.. sounds like a cool idea. I really want to *hear* this band..
I told Rick I'd keep my eyes and ears open for a drummer. Is he
a good bassist? What kind of music do they play? Original or cover?

Rick is a pretty good basist. He works on it around three hours
in the morning and a couple more in the afternoon. Steve and Rick
practice every day. Steve is a pretty good singer. I was impressed
when I heard him really go at it the other day. He has a ton of
    potential on the git.

As for what they play. Everything. Alot of emphasis on Van Halen
old and new, afew Beatles tunes here and there, Bad Company, I'm
starting to get them into Metallica (Fade to Black) and as soon
as the drummer thing gets settled, a whole world of music is going
to open up for these guys. When I saw Pete's band Friday, it reminded
me quite a bit of us (yes, I include myself. I bust my b@!!$ for
these guys, so why not!). Joe impressed me Friday!

I think I'm getting thru to these boys. They are playing a couple
of Sabbath tunes now, a couple of songs off of Pyromania, and more
from OVH (Old Van Halen). I'm thinking about starting a topic called
"Diary of a new Rock Group..."

Right now we are trying out a new drummer who worked out quite a
bit with The B-Street Bombers. Anybody ever heard of them? Rick
has talked with two other drummers I introduced to him (thanks for
the good contacts guys, I appreciate it!) and things are going well.
The T-Shirts are going to be ready next week and that should be
    alot of fun.

373.8Good newsVICKI::SHIPPINGTell the world I died of dietTue Jan 10 1989 19:0425
Well, the new year has started off with a bang.

Rick and I have talked at great length with two people, brother
and sister. Mary (Zompa, I believe the last name is...) plays
the git and keyboard, and I have heard her sing. She is excellent.
We have her in the band for sure. Her brother Andy plays drums,
and I only have Ricks word that he is excellent... his old band
won a "Battle of the Bands" type of thing last year at some college.

I am hoping to get this place I have heard of through Jay for these
guys to practice in. It is a fairly small hall, cheap, but large
enough for a good size crowd, a good size band, and a couple of
    stacks of Marshall amps...

The T-shirts are still going well. Only a few left now. Several
promo-type pictures, both black & white and color have come out
    excellent.

We have made a few new contacts, one with a man who books alot of
bands in certain clubs in Boston. We are talking more than a few
months away, but still... a damn good contact!

All good news for right now.

Yesterday Rick and I went to Hallisey (Sp?) and put a deposit down
on a Toyota van to transport all the amps weve been buying. Besides
that, I guess you could say Rick's old car is a sh*tbox and shouldn't
live past this month (^; and we had to get sumthin' for him.

The band itself has been practicing a little less because of lack
of transportation, maybe once or twice during the week and twice
on the weekends. But things are still going cool. Sometimes I
wonder if we are taking things too seriously.

I will never give up as long as I feel my friends need me. When
it gets to the point where they have given up, which doesn't look
like that'll happen for a loooong time, or when I feel like a fifth
    wheel, then I'll screw.

BTW, the van doesn't look like it'll happen for a while now, at
least three months. We talked for a good length of time about it
and realized what the size of this bill would be and how much we
can afford is. One stack of amps is coming first, then the van.
Way too much was happening at once. I feel alot better about the
    situation now!

The band has been using an ol' friend from high school on drums
for the past couple of months, Ross Jardine. He's a big boy,
probably 6'5 or 6'6", probably over 300 pounds. He might be
considered amatuer, but sh*t, when he hits those skins, he
    HITS THE SKINS!!!

He won't be with us forever though, when he goes back to school
hopefully Andy will be playing with us.

I congradulate myself on getting these guys into true H_M. Even
more so since Brians party, Mettalica has influenced Rick in
particular. Two songs now being worked on are "One" and "Fade to
Black", with hopefully more to come. Rick picks up an amp today,
a Marshall bass amp (I forget the model #) and theres a four track
    in store soon.

Rick asked ME if I wanted to do vocals on "One". I laughed and
then I left... I could never Butcher such a ba**sy tune!

Hi Buck...

I just gave Lefty a call and he tells me the amp he is picking up
today is a Marshall 3540 bass head. The Ones he is expecting soon
are the cabs for it, a 1510 Marshall and a 1520.

Steve's amps (which are coming in in March, I think) is a Marshall
3315 head with the 1960a (I'm pretty sure) and 1960b cabs.

I was just curious why the bass amps have so much more power than
the lead git amps. Do they need that much more wattage because
    of deeper resolution or something?

    Jus' curious...

Tama, y'know where Alfred Drive is (I think thats what the road
is)? Off of North Main Street, where I used to live (my folks
used to own The Pines Superette, and we lived at the house attached
to it. That was heaven for a kid! No wonder I'm still overweight.)
Anyway, theres a grey 'hall' on that road, not too big, but not
too small either that some guy rents out for like ten dollars for
    six hours.

Jay Stanley rents that place out every once in a while so he can
play there with his brother and some friends. As a matter of fact
a few weeks ago he rented it out on a Saturday night and put fliers
out that there were going to be two live bands there and it was
a big party. Thats what it turned into. A small riot. There were
dozens of cars lined up and down the street, and so much smoke in
there that you couldn't keep your eyes open without them tearing
    up. I couldn't breathe.

Anyway, there were a hold mess of kids, thirteen years old to eighteen
years old in there getting into fights and $h!t and it was a joke.
Wall to wall people, smoke and drunk 12 year olds. Lefty and I
got out of there just before the cops showed up. Hell, we just

I have some bad news. Saturday Steve checked himself into a
drug/alcohol rehab. He found that old ghosts were reappearing to
him and old habits were as well. He is not a weak individual, nor
is he immature or stupid. He did the right thing.

He has been there before, and last time he was there for a long
period of time, before I knew him. Nobody ever came to visit him
or anything, for afew months. This time it will be different.
Lefty and I are here for him and will be very supportive. This
is in no way the end of I4NI. Steve's main reason for being these
days IS the prospect of a band with a future.

As soon as this thing runs its course, and it will, Steve is going
to move out of his present apartment and move in with Rick in a
far better area. Things are going to be okay.

In the mean time, more amps will be bought, and buisness will go
along as usual. This is a setback, no question about it, but we
are just as much a family as we are a band. Steve and Rick are
like brothers to me, no matter what has happened in the past or
what will happen in the future.

It is no secret that I lost my best friend Dean acouple of years
ago to the same disease that Steve has now (his "addiction"). I
am going to make damn sure that it doesn't happen again. I'm sure
some of you guys & girls out there have had some kind of similar
experience with friends or family. As soon as I get the adress,
I will write it down in this file in hope that you guys will write
him a note of encouragement. It will definately bring up his spirits
to hear from "a fan of I4NI"!!!

waiting list. He is not looking forward to this. Francine has
mailed him a couple of letters, which he has read and he is now
writing a reply letter. Thanks Francine!

Anyway, Rick's bass is on hold because the company that is making
it (special order) is merging or being bought out by somebody else
and all orders are on hold. Wierd. Rick himself is taking lessons
in classical guitar right now, but sometimes I wish he would just
concentrate on his bass instead of playing his mandolin or his
acoustics. For crineoutloud, he carries a ****ing harmonica around
    with him.

We've been talking about 4-tracks lately, and Lefty has his heart
set on an eight instead of a four. We have plenty of literature
on it and we'll see what comes of it. But I have read up on it
some and I like the sound of an eight track better too.

Lefty, Steve and Ross J. practiced Sunday for a few hours. Steve
was very rusty, missed a few chords here and there but that is
understandable. I wanted to go and watch them play but I somehow
managed to sleep late Sunday and missed everything altogether.

We find out today when Steve goes in, if he does. I guess some
board meets to look over if he really needs to go in. Personally
I feel that if HE feels he needs to go in, there should be no
matter about it, but money and space at this place is precious,
    I guess.

Well, bad news in overabundance. I'll keep it real simple.

    1) Steve has another long wait before he is actually checked in.
It might be until April. And his stay might be SIX MONTHS.
My eyes nearly popped out when I heard that from Lefty. He
had talked to Steve afew minutes before and told Lefty that
was probably more than he could bear.

But that might not be the worst.

    2) Rick's on/off girlfriend is pregnant. I almost decked him when
he told me. Its not the first time. God, how many times have
I told this kid to be careful??? Wear a *u*k*n* piece of plastic
man!!! This time, evidently, she is going to keep it, which
is what should be done, I guess, and from what he tells me they
are going to get married. I told him I was behind him in whatever
they decided to do, and, well, whenever it is going to be done,
I'm going to be his best man.

I am more confused over the situation than anything else. It
has all happened very quickly, as everything happens with this group,
and my head is spinning. Now we just take everything as it comes
and take it from there (but wasn't that the way it was always?).

Sorry to hear about your left arm...

Tell Steve to hang in there, that it's worth it, and you guys
should make sure to keep the band together above all.
Girls getting pregnant, drug rehabs, that kind of thing can
snuff out a band so fast... everyone gets "the busies" and before

I hear 'ya all. Lefty is taking things as they come. Wierd kid.
His life is about to change drastically and he is off in some other
dimension playing tiddlywinks (with a condom, I hope) making like
nothing ever happened and God will send money soon.

Steve I haven't seen in a while. I'm anxious to talk with him to
    see whats going on.

The way things have been going with me lately is an entirely different
story. My motto has been "I should have pulled the trigger when

Anyway, I'm getting together with Lefty tonight, and both Paul and
Lefty tomorrow. Hopefully we will get alot accomplished then as
to where we are going as a group, and as friends. Its the only
time during the f***ing week when I don't have things to worry
about, and then I worry about other things.

And as for the point I was trying to get across, its not really
a matter of credit cards and camaros here, I was just trying to
explain that I feel like my life is going nowhere at twice the
speed of sound and its frustrating. And depressing.

I look back to a time when I was twenty pounds lighter, had money
in the bank, a "new" red camaro, and a job with a company (now a
fortune 500 co.) that flew me to New York City, Cinci, Atlanta,
Philadelphia and such, and besides that I thought I had good friends
and a beautiful girlfriend. And a parakeet.

    Then I had a future. Now I am a temp with a 1979 Olds, I'm twenty
pounds overwieght with a girlfriend who I love but suffocates the
hell out of me, I'm semi-broke, and half of my friends are either
dead, or fu**ed my ex-firlfriends, and my parakeet is dead too.
I think I miss the bird the most.

Don't I paint a lovely picture??? I draw good too.

    <AHEM>

Do I hear a case of the poor me's or what?? This isn't a flame,
honey...just a friendly slap in the pusss.

Look. You named off good things, in a negative manner. You ungrateful,
    brat!

Big deal, your not in the Fortune 500 co., Big deal, you don't own
a 'Red Camaro', Big deal your friends have problems too.

Look buddy, like, your whole life is over!! Cash in!! Your what,
21? Your lucky to be working at all, let alone at Digital. You have
money, your not the proud owner of a useless $50,000 car, but think,
you have your *dreams*. Some people are condemned to getting EVERYTHING
they're little [I emphasis that word] heart desires, and what's
    left? Nothing.

You need to appreciate what you have. Your life is not over. Surprise.
surprise. You are so young, you have so much to go through. If you
can't make it through these little traumas, what are you going to
do when sh*t really goes down?

Nothing is such a big deal that we can't handle. That's where friends
come in. You need to stop trying to do so much for your friends...its
wearing you thin, man. Whatever happens to them, is a result of
a decision they made ON THEIR OWN...you had nothing to do with the
F-ed up lives of your friends. All you can do is give them a soft
shoulder to cry on, an ear to listen, or your greatest asset, your
warm smile. Nothing more. Your not God, your not a wizard, you cannot
perform miracles. Stop it. Just be happy you can walk and talk.

Suggest going to a childrens hospital. You want to be depressed.
Stop moaning about yourself, there are children who aren't even
walking yet, and they've got less than a year to 6 mos. to live,
if they live, some are in a wheelchair for the rest of their lives,
some are blind, or have other handicaps. You really think YOU have
    problems, Don? Think about it.

You don't do you...You actually lead a pretty good life, you just
don't lead a perfect life....oh well, welcome to reality...

    your friend.

Well, Friday I'm outa here, and by that time there will probably
be not too much more news on what the guys are doing.

As for Lefty, well, the date set for him to tie the knot is May
26th or 28th or sumthin' like that. But knowing him, that date
    will probably change...

Steve goes on. I still haven't talked to him in a while. All I've
heard is a tape they made like three weeks ago with Ross. It sounded
really good, although the vocals were hardly audable.

Umm, Mary has hardly been around to practice and I don't think (IMO)
that she will be in the band for that much longer. Too bad, because
she really has alot of talent.

Ross goes to school all the time, but he is there when the guys
want to practice, so that is cool. Despite his youthful personality,
I would like to see him practice more often and develop into a
    quality drummer. He has potential.

Me, I'm just me. I would like for you people to meet these guys
as a group someday and get to listen to them live. Who knows.

Mods, I hope this note does not get deleted, even tho I will be
gone. Maybe someday when I4NI gets its act together, the noters
of this conference will have something to talk about.
