25.0. "What makes Heavy_Metal heavy?" by MILKWY::SLABOUNTY (Raging Slab) Mon Nov 20 1989 17:18

    	What makes Heavy_Metal heavy?

Is it the guitars? The bass presence? The drums?

    Peter,

Heavy metal is sex with strings, G - strings or in some cases
the whole set. It's the ringing in your ears (after the concert
or just before orgasm ) and the rapid pulse. It's blue's at
MEGA VOLUME. It's easy listening music at my house !!!

Hmm... what makes metal heavy... hmmm

Sex with the strings sounds close... but it's more than that.
It's the rhythm that wrenches your whole body, the almost
random arrangement of sounds to produce a total expression of
some strong feeling... the stronger the better. Heavy metal
springs fropm the origins of music itself... the need to
express things too complex or powerful for mere words.

Usually implied by the name is extensive use of guitars in
competative cooperation. It is the unleashing of the demon
in the human... the beast in us all.

        Heavy Metal consists of:

              1) Heavy, loud, take-charge guitar riffs

              2) Loud, pounding drums (especially bass)

              3) High and low screeches from the lead singer

and other qualities which go beyond words.

                                                       Shawn L.

Rock is a stock car racing around an oval track.

Heavy Metal is a Funnycar racing down the quarter mile - then bursting
into flames after just breaking the world records - then everyone
cheers without even knowing if the driver is dead or alive, because
    it doesn't matter.

IMO, Heavy Metal is an attitude:

We're not going to take any sh*t from anyone!

    It's a rebellious, live-by-your-own-rules attitude.
It's what we turn up loud when we're in the dumps,
It's what we turn up loud when we're celebrating.
It is the soundtrack to our lives. (pretty good, huh?)

Heavy metal can be defined as music with BALLS! I consider
heavy metal as sound that will even mess up Tammy Fay's hair do
at 100 yards and causes cats to turn inside out. White hot, ass
kicking music that will turn window pains into a rubbery, snot
    like substance.

Interesting classification scheme. It seems that by
your definition Heavy Metal implies Old Metal (or perhaps
you simply neglected to add newer bands to the Heavy list.

I do like the classifications though, and feel certain there
    	are others. For example:

Trash Metal	(bands that spend five minutes rehearsing before
recording an entire album, then stop with the
first take). Since I don't buy these albums,
    			 I can't list any names.

Punk Metal	(bands that rely more on the punk image than
    			 on musical integrity).

Pseudo Metal	(bands from other genres that put out one song
    			 that has metallic overtones).

25.13Metal or not Metal?REGENT::DITTMERMon Aug 22 1988 18:5827
What heavy metal IS has been pretty well described in the preceding
replies, but what ISN'T heavy metal has not been described. Heavy
    metal isn't:

o music listened to by a majority of screaming teeni-boppers (Bon
    Jovi)

o music with too much synthesizers, keyboards, and not enough kick-ass
    guitar solos (Van Halen)

o played by a bunch of fashion faggits (Poison, Cinderella)

o an album with too many slow songs about love and happiness
    (Whitesnake)

I can expect alot of arguments on this reply, but remember I am not
putting down any of these bands (except Poison), I just don't think
    they heavy metal.
Also, some bands are called speed metal, thrash metal, etc.
this doesn't mean they aren't heavy metal, they are just heavier,
or faster. On the other hand pop metal is not really metal, it's sort
    of like 'almost metal'.

Well, like many other things in this conference, a person's definition of
Heavy Metal is an opinion. There is no right or wrong.

I happen to agree with what you are saying (for the most part), but not
everyone will. That is OK! That's what makes this conference cool.

In here, we try not to limit ourselves *too* much. Yes, we won't discuss
Simon and Garfunkel here. But we can talk about such pop/metal bands as
Poison and Whitesnake. Why? Because we want to!

This conference was set up by people who were sick of getting flamed on
in the MUSIC file whenever we mentioned our favorite bands. So we
started our own conference. What we don't need now is some holier-than-
thou person to start telling us what we can and can't talk about. So
please back off a little, huh?

If you only consider bands like Testament to be HM, and VH to be pop,
that's fine! Please feel free to put in useful comments in that
category. But also give us the freedom to discuss other types of metal,
including pop/metal or ballads, or whatever.

Hope this doesn't sound like too much of a flame, because it's not meant to
be. I just want to shut off trouble before it starts here, and this goes
into a rathole.

I've come to a decision. I know this shocks a lot of you.

The thing that makes Heavy Metal truely heavy is the weight of the
guitar amps. You can't play heavy metal with some lightweight amp, it
takes a real back breaker. The more it weighs, the better (heavier) is
    must sound right?

I notice that many bands seem to try to compensate for having light
weight amps by adding more cabinets (see the wall of Randall cabs at a
Poison show?). This may help a bit, but in the long run isn't going
    to cut it.

Heavy music simply requires heavy amps!

From a Guitar players opinion, mechanically speaking its :-

    1) distotion
    2) minor Chord progresions " perhaps a few diminished 5ths here
and there for a rhoads type style."
    3) Last but not least , tune in, turn up, and let rip!.

    Just an opinion,

I thought that for the majority of "middle of the road" stuff,
H_M is dominated by stuff like 9ths or chords with no 3rds etc..
(ie power chords). Mick Marrs wouldn't know a diminished fifth if
it kicked him in the b*lls 8^)

   (Reply -> 25.29)

Yes the Minor Progresions I was typing about are in fact "mainly"
Power Chords with no 3rd's "ie A5 or A no 3rd".
But Power Chords can be in the form of roots and 3rds.
    EG:-
         A5 or A no 3rd consists of ( A,E,A), E Bieng the 5th.

         A/C# or A,C# Bass consists of (A,C#,A) C# Bieng the 3rd.

This chord A/C# is played as Power chord using only the 4th and
7th frets of the A and D string respectivley, a working Heavy Metal
example of this chord bieng used is in AC/DC's Hells Bells,
and if that isn't Heavy I'll snap my strat!. As for 9ths , Nope,
    suspended 4ths yes.

If still in doubt, check Bert Weadons Play in a day!

Oh yeah, I usually like to have thirds in my chords, otherwise (like
Buck sez) it's tonality is ambiguous. ...But sometimes that can be
advantageous (prevents problems like, "Whaddaya mean I was outta tune,
    it's *supposed* to be MINOR")

    Re: including thirds

It depends on what you are doing. I guess they are time when its
not worth including it just for the sake of melody (does Wurzel
include the third in an A5 most of the time ?? 8^) ).

On analysis of Maidens earlier stuff, you will find that A.Smith
plays a hell of a lot of 5ths (no 3rds) whilst Dave Murray plays
exactly the same 5th progression but WITH the 3rds, so with him
including them gives the sound that much more bite - but not enough
to make it sound wimpy (which IMO is what would happen if one
guitarist played the hole thing WITH the 3rds). It balances well.

I agree with Buck that todays guitarists is striving for more of
a "harmony" approach rather than bone crushing power chords - but
I believe there is room for both. Also, the latter style is much
more likely to get a "rock" guitarist more respect from other
musicians. I guess it boils down to preference and the players style.

    Just some bullshit,
