712.0. "Kansas" by KETJE::VLASIU (Try with a bigger hammer) Thu Oct 19 1989 08:31

What about Kansas ? I haven't found them in the topic list and consequently
I opened this new topic.

I discovered Kansas very late (I mean last year) with their "Best of Kansas".
I followed with "Power" and their last one. It was a very good surprise
to discover that their seventies music was so fine and not affected by time.
They are not very heavy but in a same class with Foreigner and Blue Oyster Cult
(bands I like also). I like their classic touch, and I think they still have
one of the best voices in rock music.
Can anyone tell something more about their LPs (I've seen a new double CD
including "Leftoverture" and "Point of Known Return" which seem to be 2 of
their best LPs but I don't know).

Best regards,
Sorin

I like Kansas and all but is it really Heavy Metal?

712.2Not really but ..KETJE::VLASIUTry with a bigger hammerThu Oct 19 1989 09:298
    Not really but in the shops I allways find them in the hard/heavy rock
    sections. The Power LP seems "heavier" than the others and if Foreigner
    and BOC are here why not Kansas. In any case they are difficult to
    clasify. In a magasine they were classified as "pomp rock" together
    with Magnum. I avoid that I do not consider them heavy but more
    progressive.

712.3I like'em!HAZEL::STARRAlways took candy from strangers...Thu Oct 19 1989 13:4111
I used to LOVE Kansas back when I was in high school. I don't seem to listen
to them that much anymore, but maybe I'll go pull out those old albums.

I saw them in concert at the Boston Garden with Molly Hatchet, and thought
they were really good. Steve Walsh has a *great* voice, and the dual guitar
work was really nice back then.

I haven't heard much of the new Kansas with Steve Morse on guitar, but its
supposed to be pretty good.

712.4Song for AmericaKDCFS1::FREEMANTue Oct 24 1989 18:568
    Back in high school Kansas was all the rage. Spent many an hour
    with second album "Song for America". I really regret that I never
    caught their act live (except on video).

    I have listened them very much; I, Point of Know Return, Monolith,
    Masquee, live, Best Of... and I think they are very skillfull musicians
    and there is also "soul" in their music. Maybe it is not heavy metal,
    but it is damn good.

712.6Seeds of Change reissued with new chaptersHAVASU::HEISERstep into my grooveThu Aug 22 1991 21:3442
    BTW - There are rumors of a reunion of the original members (i.e.,
    Steve Walsh, Kerry Livgren, Dave Hope, Robbie Steinhardt, etc.)

Subject: Kerry Livgren, Seeds of Change: Re-issue

For those of you that are interested and have been asking:

Kerry's book, 'Seeds of Change' has been re-issued in paperback.

I picked it up last night at a local Christian Bookstore
for $9.95. Here is some details........

	It has the same cover with revised type (same picture, different
	  layout of text)
	Chapters 13 - 17 have been added called "Part II (1990)"
	These new chapters talk about his break from Kansas,
	formation of AD, "break-up" of AD, and rejoining Kansas
	for a summer German tour in 1990.
	It is printed by Sparrow Press, Brentwood, TN 1991
	The original was printed by Crossway books, 1983 out of
Illinois.

This is a must for Kansas fans.....the new chapters explain a lot
of the things that have happened in the past 10 years! Excellent
BOOK!!!

For anybody who can't get it locally, here are the ISBN number and
Library of Congress Numbers of the book.

Lib. of Congress # 91-060072

ISBN # 0-917143-03-5

Hope this is good news for most people.....enjoy!

712.7Still playing liveTROOA::NYULMon Jun 29 1992 15:4417

    Well, this doesn't seem to be a very active note, but I will mention
    that I saw Kansas at Lulu's Roadhouse ( now closed :-( ) in 1991, with
    STEVE MORSE on guitar, violin, keyboards, and backup vocals.

    As I am a Morse fan, I was blown away. I saw them again this year in
    Guelph, sans Morse. Lulu's is (was) in Kitchener. Both these cities
    are in Ontario, Canada.

    They played a strong set, both times, but the singer's voice is showing
    some wear. Fans of "Leftoverture" and "Point of No Return" would have
    been very pleased with the set list. For what its worth, they are
    probably still touring small clubs in Canada and US.

    Aye,not a bad band. I`ve got the double live album somwhere,and that
    er,Powerwotsit album. A bit dated for my tastes,to be honest.

    Kansas's new live album-"Live at the Wiskey" was just released in the
    stores. Special guest Kerry Livgren is on it. Sounds good even though
    its just one take,one show...Steve Walsh's voice is a bit shot but the
    music is still good.
