684.0. "Lynch Mob" by BUFFER::GOLDSMITH (Do as I do, not as I say) Tue Oct 03 1989 13:44

Alright, with the demise of Dokken brings the fresh new sound
    (hopefully) of Lynch Mob.

The line-up here is George Lynch on guitars, Mick Brown on drums, and
some singer, Oni Logan (sounds familiar, but I can't place it), and
some dude on bass. Not Jeff Pilson, however.

I glanced through an article in Guitar or something like that, on the
new band. There was mention of an early '90 release.

This is to be the Lynch Mob topic.

Any news on the album or any new plans in the works?

I read in an issue of Guitar Player that Dokken still is together
with the exception of Jeff Pilson being replaced by bassist from
the band Black 'n Blue. Other than the replacement of Jeff Pilson,
    nothing has changed with Dokken.

Well, unless the recent issue of Guitar (FTPM)(also an interview with
Billy Duffy) made up an interview with George, than it was all a lie.
George also said from what I remember (I knew I should have bought it)
that so far they have about 15 songs ready to put down. I don't
remember any mention of Jeff Pilson, although he had a field day
ragging on Don. Dokken IS gone.

Yeah, they really tore Don apart in that article... George said
something to the effect of (in reference to a question about LM's
    singer:

"Besides being a nice guy, easy to work with, fun and a great singer,
<insert_new_guys_name> is a LOT like Don was.

I was rolling when I read that.

    Hold the presses,

I read another article in the new Guitar Player this week and they
also say that [with quotes from George] that the line up remains
the same in Dokken with the exception of the replacement of Jeff
Pilson [with the bass player from Black 'n Blue]. As far as the
songs going towards the Lynch Mob, which by the way was planned
on being a three piece outfit including George on Guitar, Jeff on
Bass and Lead Vocals and Mick Brown on Drums, are either going to
show up on the new Dokken album or be part of a solo project of
George's. So everybody shut the f*ck up!

RIP: Anthony (Esposito), how did you hook up with these guys?

ANTHONY:A friend of mine [Atlantic Records publicist Tania McMasters] told
me about the opening and got me in touch with them. I went out to
Phoenix and auditioned. I wasn't even supposed to come out, and
they asked me if I could cancel my flight. But I had a
nonrefundable ticket, so I ended up going anyway.

ONI:	I asked him to cancel it because we had a couple of bass players in
town at that time, and it was just a stroke of luck that he came out.
He couldn't refund his ticket, so we said, "Oh, alright. Come out."
As soon as he walked through the door and started playing and
suggesting arrangement ideas, I knew he was the guy, and the other
guys did too. The bass players we auditioned before didn't have any
soul in their playing. Everything in this band is shared equally, so
we wanted somebody who could contribute creatively. But everyone
else was so intimidated by George and Mick.

RIP:	George, the scuttlebutt about how you found Oni was that you followed
him around, somewhat drunkenly, at his Ferrari gigs and told him
point-blank in front of everyone that you were going to steal him for
	your band. True or false?

GEORGE:	Oh, man! We had already been talking for months. [Pause] Or at least
	a month.

ONI:	We talked for two months before I came out there. I was unhappy with
Ferrari band because I didn't have creative freedom. It was like a
tug-of-war between me and one of the guys in the band. They wanted
to record, and I wanted to write some more songs and make the album a
contender in the rock genre. They disagreed, so I said, "Forget it."
One listen to this guy's [George's] demo, and I knew it was something
great. Plus, he told me, "You can have total freedom and creativity."

GEORGE:	I basically told him, "It's your band. It's all our band." Nobody
has any upper hand in this band in any way -- financially, creatively
or anything. Seriously. But, actually, I HAD been drinking when I
went to see him at one of their shows--because they came on three
hours later than they were supposed to! And I was real drunk by the
time he got up on his way to the dressing room, and I peeked my head
around the stairwell and said, "Would you rather be in a band called
Ferrari or drive one?" That angered his road crew and the guy with
the white-and-black hair [Marc Ferrari]. So these guys were right in
my face, but I would have kicked their *sses for him. [Joking]
I'd beat up the rest of the band, and he wouldn't have anybody to
	play with.

RIP:	Why isn't Jeff Pilson in the band?

GEORGE:	Junior Dokkenitis syndrome. That means that someone told him he
was great and he didn't need anybody else in the band, and he believed
it. He's great, but I don't think anybody can do it on their own.
We shared a lot of dreams together, and for him to just walk out
on them like that when the time came to make those things a reality...
I mean, we're still friends. I'm still bitter about it a little
bit, but I'm glad that we're not playing together now, to tell you
the truth. Not because of the way it happened, but just 'cause I'm
glad to be playing with a bass player who's realy a bass player.
Jeff wasn't happy as a bass player, and he wouldn't have been happy
if he continued to be one. He was born to be a lead singer. He's
good at that. [Joking] He's useless in life other than what he does.
He can't go to the bathroom by himself, but when he ges onstage and
sings, he's at home. If he wants to pursue that, it's great and I
wish him the best of luck. The only thing I care about is this; If
you're not on our side, you're the enemy as far as I'm concerned.

RIP: How does this compare with the music you did with Dokken? Is there
any similarity besides your guitar playing?

GEORGE:	My guitar playing isn't even the same. [Joking] I got that same loud
buzz in my amp! Same problem with tuning. I keep hitting that one
	wrong note!

RIP:	So with all your years in Dokken, what is it that you're not going
to do that you've learned from that experience?

GEORGE:	I won't play with no-talent, fat...

ONI:	Oh, man! Do you h ear what he's saying?

GEORGE:	...Egotistical singers.

ONI:	Ooohhhh! Oh! can we rewind and erase this?

RIP:	[Laughing] No! This is great! Go on, George!

GEROGE:	Oh, I gotta do one spiteful interview. we do all those nice and happy
and sweet ones. Let's do this. Besides [pointing at me], she loves
the dirt. The bandmembers are mates. You don't screw your family.
The band comes first before anything else, even if it means taking a
	sh*t business-wise.

ANTHONY:Yeah, the band's a family, and incest is against the law!

RIP:	Is it true that you're legally trying to stop Don from using the name
Dokken or Dokken II for his band?

GEORGE:	Yeah. He can't use it. I told his manager I'll take him to court if
he did use it. He can try. He submitted a few different names.
One was Dokken's Army, and they didn't like that; so they changed it
to Dokken II, and we said, "No II." Then he changed it, by removing
all the vowels, to DKN. We figured if we opened up for him, we'd
change our name to Balls, and it would be DKNBALLS! We suggested
they remove the consontants instead and call themselves OE.
That would be acceptable. "OE! OE! OE!" [Laughs]

RIP:	[Also laughing] The audience would sound like a bunch of pigs!

GEORGE:	Well, that would be appropriate! [Oni shoots him another angry look,
Anthony laughs and I raise my eyebrows. George decides the best
defense is the good offense.] Hey, he's been telling people that I'm
a heroin addict.! He's systematically gone out to everybody who I've
been in contact with in the business and said all this sh*t about me,
which I try to ignore, but sometimes it just p*sses me off. He can't
just worry about his own thing and get it together. He's got to try
to just completely tear me down. That's bullsh*t. He was up at
the guitar endorser at ESP trying to get a free guitar, but they
wouldn't give it to him. A friend of mine overheard Don talking
to a bunch of kids. He got tired of listening to himself and
believing his own bullsh*t, and he just started on me. My friend
called me and said, "Maybe I shouldn't tell you this, but these kids
came up to me afterwards and asked me if you were a heroin addict."
I never took heroin in my whole life! I wouldn't even know what it
it is if I saw it! He's tried to paint this picture of me being...
he'd say that he was the personwho came up with melodies, harmonies
and ballads--allt the commercial aspects of the songs--and that I
came up with the grungy, distorted heaviness. That was the most
ludicrous thing I ever heard, because that's so untrue. If anything,
I probably did more of the other stuff. He said that I'd said
"Ballads are for wimps." I never said that! We have a killer ballad
	on this album!

RIP:	But Don has said that he respects you very much as a guitar player.

GEORGE:	Yeah, that's what he told me.

RIP:	He's also said that he spent more time with his new band in seven
months
than he did with Dokken in seven years.

GEORGE:	well, that was of his own accord. Jeff, Mick and me would get
together, and he would just never show up because he thought he
was a star. He would not play. He'd think he could take his own limo
and that kind of sh*t. And we wouldn't let him get away with that
crap, 'cause it wasn't HIS band, it was all of our band. But he tried
to believe that it was. So, it was just games. Endless mind games.
Endless ego games that got so tired. He'd say, "I want my own
special thing on the rider [contract]. I want this. Let's talk about
me. What do you think of MY album?" He would constantly lie to the
press about how he wrote everything and did everything, but he did
the least work in the band! I think he was the least-talented member
of the band, and for him to take all the credit.... I've probably said
	enough already.

ONI: [Trying to steer George to a safer topic]. Let's just talk about how
	great our band is.

GEORGE:	Well, he talks about how great his band is. That's why his band's
ready to jump ship on him. His bass player came over to us and
wanted to join our band. Patrick Young from Black'n Blue.
I originally approached Patrick [before Anthony joined], and he was
swaering to me that it was going to be an equal band and everything's
on the up and up, and I said, "Okay but if it doesn't turn out
tha way--and I'm not gonna tell you it isn't--but let's say it
doesn't down the road, give us a call." He gave us a call a month
later and said, "well, I don'[t really have a contract, and now
Don says he just wants me for the road, and I'm just gonna be a
salaried musician. I walked into the studio, and there's some
other musician playing through my rig, and Don tells me I'm not
gonna do the album." That's kind of cheesy and chickensh*t.

RIP:	Do you want to comment on your lack of enthusiasm during the
	Monsters of Rock tour?

GEORGE: Well, I don't have any excuse for that, but I was very disillusioned
with the way things were, because the breakup was totally
orchestrated by Don for his own benefit. He announced to Jeff and
Mick and me, "I"m leaving the band, and I'm gonna do everything in
my power to keep the nam;e, but we gotta go out and play the
Monsters." Here I had worked six years to make this band happen,
and I gotta throw it all in the gutter so he can benefit himself.

RIP:	Why would he tell you that right before the tour even began?

GEORGE:	Because that's the way he is! He's a piece of sh*t! That IS a
slimeball thing to do to somebody else. You're talking about three
other guys' whole lives! To take their lives and just... he cares
about no one else but himself. The guy would step on his
grandmother's forehead to get another foot ahead. He's a slimeball,
man. He is. So the band was over. There was no future. I should
have been able to get it done professionally, and gone out there
and given it my best, but it was hard for me to get past the fact
that it was over. What was I working for? It's hard for me to work
just for myself. to me, it has to be a band. That's what motivates
me. I feel I might have cheated the fans in doing that. I tried
to play, but it's hard for me to get up next to the guy and say,
"Yeah! Come on over here, bro! Let's make this s how happen!"
when I felt like knocking him OFF the stage. He'll eventually hang
himself. His time will come. He'll do okay because he'll use other
people's talents like he always has, and it will make up for the lack
of his own. A band means four people working for one thing, instead
of somebody heading up a group like a bunch of hired guns to make
you look good. In Lynch Mob, everybody collaborates. That's what
makes this band work. Helping each other out. we need each other.

FOOTNOTE: It wasn't our intention in covering the Dokken chronicles over the
past two months that things get so ugly. Words hurt; the truth hurts.
We've heard the words, from Don last month, and from George here in
this article. Don's recollections of George were terse, but extremely
polite in comparison to George's obvious still-fervent hatred for
his fo rmer bandmate (no wonder the shredder's secret nickname
was "Satan") As metal journalists and fans of the music, we'd like
to see this banter and bullsh*rt end, and Don Dokken and George
Lynch grow up, move on and prosper respectively in their new
ventures. Do it for the kids, huh, fellas?

    LYNCH MOB/DOKKEN II Summary:

George Lynch - A cry baby that got tired of playing fills for love
songs. A killer player, but unfortunately pop metal is saturated
with players of equal merit. Shut up George !

Don Dokken - A cry baby that got tired of having heavy guitar lines
foul up his "oh baby, oh's". He needs to mature a bit as well.
Another part that will never equal the sum called "Dokken". Shut
    	up Don !

Jeff Pilson - A front man wannabe. But, will probably remain a
neverbe. You'll probably find him at a flea market in a few years
selling "Tooth And Nail" t-shirts from the back of a '72 Dodge

Personally, I think it was probably Don's "I'm the band" type front-man
attitude most singers have; from personal experience! I called one
guy to see if he'd audition, here's a punk 18 year old telling me
over the phone, "Well, dude. I'm like in a lot of demand right now."
At that point, I hung up the phone! If he's in so much in demand, why
the h*ll is he looking for a band? I should have called him back!
I wonder if he'll still be in demand when puberty kicks in!

I'm with George's attitude 100%! 4 (or 5 in our case) head are smarter
than 1! Look how long it took Tom Scholz to put out 3rd stage! To me,
a band is a BAND and if you want to be THE band, why not just come out
with album "Don Dokken: No band members required".

(Take a deep breath, breathe in, breathe out, breathe in, breathe out)

OK, so I'm being a little harsh on singer's attitude. I will admit
that there are guitarists out there that have the same problems! And
    I hate that with passion!

    Well, I'll shut up now...

from the car shop last night.

I was, well..., underwhelmed. The singer sounds a lot like Bon Jovi on
most of the songs I heard and the guitar parts seemed to be pushed way
back in the mix. I donno what happened to Georges killer solos either,
as in the 5 or 6 songs I heard there seemed to be only one solo and it
    about made me yawn.

I caught Lynch Mob on "In Concert '91" Friday night and frankly, I
    thought they sucked!

George was so low in the mix that you could hardly hear him, even
during his solos (spell: "Most of the time"). He tried to do entirely
too much soloing and it sounded stupid too, probably why they
practically removed him from the mix...

I'm not sure what was holding the music together, because the bass
player didn't seem to be playing that much and Lynch was constantly
going off on these solo riff things which should have left the rhythm
section kind of thin, but it didn't. I think they either had another
player offstage or taped background because there just wasn't enough
instruments out there doing the right thing at the right time to have
    been playing completely live.

In addition to all that, what little I heard of Lynches (constant)
playing sounded really weak and totally uninspired. It was like he was
blindly noodling with no direction whatsoever.

It didn't even sound like the same guitarist that used to play all
those cool solos a few years back with Dokken. I'm sorry, but he's
    just lost it...
