605.0. "LA Guns" by ANT::SLABOUNTY (It's 7 o'clock and I wanna mosh ...) Mon Jul 17 1989 14:01

LA Guns will be coming out with a new album soon ...
    	appearing on the album are:

    	Cheap Trick's Robin Zander
    		      Rick Nielsen (sp?)

And the Motor City Madman - Ted Nugent.

Are these guys any good? I've heard of 'em, and maybe
even seen a video (Electric 'something'?).

I HATED them in concert when they opened up for AC/DC (???)
last year. They didn't even know what city they were in and
the fools who WERE enjoying them roared right along with them
when they said "Are you ready to F**** party Boston??!" And
it wouldn't have been so bad if it had been once, but it
    	happened two or three times.

ARGGHH!!!! Almost nothing annoys me more than to have a band
come to one town and call it another...Get a clue guys.

Now on the other hand. I've seen a couple of videos on the
HBB and I thought they were good!! I won't go see them in
concert again, but I might pick up something on tape if I
    	get that desperate.

Why does this feel like Deja Vu - I coulda sworn I discussed this band
elsewhere in this file....

Anyways - I saw them at the Channel a while back, and thought they were OK.
They are pretty much on the same level as Faster Pussycat - just a little too
much flash over substance. But the show was real enjoyable, and the did some
decent Zep and Aerosmith covers....

I haven't heard the album, so I can't judge them against that.

605.3Where are they from? ;^)CSC32::G_HOUSEBe excellent to everyone!Mon Jul 17 1989 19:0519
    re: Alan

There is another discussion with LA Guns and Faster Pussycat and a few
of the other of this type band. It's title is something about
"sleeze". I have no problem with a seperate note for each band.

    re: LA Guns

I've never heard a whole album by them, but what I've heard I liked.
It's a kind of raw sound like Faster Pussycat, GnR, etc. Pretty simple
music from what I heard (about half one album & a couple of videos),
but a kind of nice groove.

The video that Shawn mentioned is for a song called "Electric Gypsy".
While I didn't think the video was outstanding (unless you're all wild
on seeing unwashed guys riding Harleys), I did like the song.

605.4LA GUNS & GUNS N ROSES meme combat !CASEE::LALLIDidier - BCE Valbonne - ext. 828.5423Tue Jul 18 1989 07:0013
I've heard their 1st LP and it sound very similar to GnR to me. I've found
"electric Gypsy" a very good tune. There is also a guitar instrumental (If
I remember well) on the second side which is excelent.

One member of the group is called Guns (forgot its firstname) and of what I've
heard he was, with Axl Rose, the former of "Guns & Roses" (using their 2 names).
But then he left GnR (or got kicked out) and formed "LA Guns".

Anybody have heard the same story ?

    There's the LA - Guns - n Roses scam:

LA Guns was formed by lead guitarist Tracii Guns, along with Axl, Izzy,
and Duff from GnR. Slash and Steve A. were playing in a band called
Hollywood Rose, which Duff also jammed with from time to time. Now,
the GnR dudes wanted to do a northwest tour, and Tracii and the LA Guns
drummer were scared to leave thier jobs and go out on the road, so Axl
"kicked them out", called up Slash and Steve, and formed Guns n Roses.
They did go out on said northwest tour, but it was a bit of a distaster
(Van broke down, equipment stolen, etc etc), but they said they came
out of it a stronger band as a result. Tracii obviously forged on with
LA Guns, and I bet he's kicking himself now as to why he isn't that
    rich n ramous!
605.6Gnr and GUNSPOBOX::PATLATue Jul 18 1989 13:5112
I think if you look on AFD there is a song that is in different
color then the rest on the cover. I think it was co written by Gun
or he had some part in it. I heard an interview a long time ago
on a local radio station here in Chicago with Axl when Guns n Roses
was opening up for Alice Cooper in Chicago (with Cinderellas drummer)
and he said the same story about how Gun quit didn't sound like
any bad feelings and that was before they (gnr) got really big.
GnR got so drunk at that concert is was sick Slash was stagerrin
so badly is was just entertaining to watch him bump into all there
gear. They were realy bad that night and just turned up their amps
to cover it all up. ALICE rocked that night though...

Isn't LA Guns the band with the vocalist who used to be in the
late seventies/early eighties British band "Girl" ?

I remember seeing this band support UFO around 1980 in Glasgow.
It is interesting (IMO) to note that the guitarist in this band
was none other than Phil Collen (sp ?) who progressed to a more
prosperous outlook with that well-known teeny-bopper sensation
    band...Def/Duff something or other....

All I remember from Girl's set that night was them doing a song
called "Do ya' Love Me"- the singer took a solo spot trying to
rouse the crowd with cries of "Do ya love me ?"...

The general response was "$%^& off!!!!"

the singer has got a killer sounding voice, not to high

For all of you into LA Guns: if you haven't seen the new Rolling
Stone, the band is doing a nice and pretty photo spread showing off all
of the pretty clothes that they bought lately. Isn't that special.
They should concentrate on trying to be good before they *try* to be
    good looking.

Also heard the new LA Guns tune on WBCN the other night, and I was impressed!
I wasn't a *big* fan of their first album, although I thought they were OK.
This one sounds better, and reminded me of Tora Tora (in fact, I thought
that's who it was until they announced it afterwards). Nice funky feel to it,
sorta reminiscent of mid-era Aerosmith (not as good, but it had that kinda
sound).

I've got the new album and I'm impressed. Their new album is a lot
tighter than the first, not as rough. I think it has some great guitar
work too. It's definately an album I'd buy. As a matter of fact, I
already ran out and got tickets to their show.
605.23CHIPS::PERTAGMon Nov 06 1989 12:037
Yah, I went. I thought the show was great. Every band was cool. I
had front row for dangerous Toys. And I got a drum stick and guitar
pick. Then later on some guy bought an LA Guns guitar pick off me for
$20! The place was packed. La Guns looked great they did a wicked
good job doing "Malaria". They played all the cool tunes. I wished
they played more of the new album though. I had such a great time.
I'm going again tonight to Providence. -Kim

Went and saw these guys again last night. What a lame crowd. there
was nobody there. The first 10 rows were filled (if that) and there
were scattered people around. Missed Tora Tora and Dangerous Toys this
time due to police harrassment but, did catch all of La Guns. I
thought they put more energy into the Boston show.

The funniest thing about the whole night was when Phil Lewis goes "we
were in Boston last night and you guys blow them away" "this is the
loudest crowd" I couldn't believe he said that. I was like you've go
    to be kidding.

Well, I've been listening to "Cocked and Loaded" all w'end,
and it cooks!! Alot of great stuff ... "Rip and Tear" is
my favorite, with "Never Enough" and a couple others fol-
    	lowing close behind.

Tracii Guns WAIIIIILS on guitar ... his style of playing
seems to be very similar to Slash (GnR), but I'd say he's
    	a little better.

WELL ITS BEEN 2 MONTHS SINCE ANYONE HAS ADDED ANYTHING TO THIS, SO I'M
GONNA. I WOULD HAVE ADDED BEFORE, BUT I JUST GOT AN ACCOUNT HERE.

L.A. GUNS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES. I MET TRACII GUNS AT THE CHANNEL IN
BOSTON AND HUNG OUT WITH HIM FOR A WHILE AND GOT MY PICTURE TAKEN WITH
HIM. HE WAS SO SWEET. THE REASON I GOT IN THERE, BEFORE THEY OPENED
THE DOORS, WAS BECAUSE MY SISTER'S BOYFRIEND'S BAND WAS ONE OF THE
BANDS WHO OPENED UP FOR L.A. GUNS. SO NO ONE WAS THERE AND I JUST
LOOKED OVER AND THERE TRACII WAS... PLAYING A VIDEO GAME WITH ONE OF
HIS ROADIES. MY SISTER'S BOYFRIEND TOOK 3 PICTURES OF US BUT ONLY 1
    CAME OUT...THANK GOD!!!!

I ALSO SAW L.A. GUNS AT THE ORPHEUM THEATRE IN BOSTON. THEY PUT ON
SUCH A GOOD SHOW, EVEN THOUGH IT WAS A LITTLE PLACE. BUT LITTLE IS
BETTER, BECAUSE ONLY A FEW FEET AWAY FROM YOU, THEY WERE RIGHT THERE.
THE LEAD SINGER, PHIL (ITHINK) WORE THE COOLEST LOOKING STUFF, AND HE
HAS THE GREATEST SCRATCHY SOUNDING VOICE THAT'S ALL HIS. I LOVE IT.

MY FAVORITE SONG BY THEM HAS TO BE "SEX ACTION" BECAUSE I HEARD 1
SECOND OF THE SONG ON AN AD ON WAAF FOR L.A. GUNS OPENING UP FOR SOME
BAND (A WHILE AGO) AND FROM THE 3 WORDS I HEARD THEM PLAY, I WENT OUT
AND BOUGHT THE TAPE. THAT SONG IS SO COOL. THE "BALLAD OF JANE" IS
SO AWESOME, TOO. I HEARD THAT WHOEVER WROTE IT, HIS GIRLFRIEND IN
REAL LIFE DIED, OR GOT KILLED, AND HE WROTE THAT SONG FOR HER.
IN THE LAST VERSE IT SAYS, "SHE'S BREAKING HEARTS IN HEAVEN NOW."
IT'S SO SAD, BUT SUCH A GOOD SONG. THEY REALLY KNOW HOW TO GET YOU
UP AND FLIPPING OUT AT THEIR CONCERTS.

THEIR VIDEO TAPE IS COOL, TOO. IT SHOWS TRACII TALKING FOR A BIT, AND
PLAYING A SOLO. HE'S SO COOL.

    ANYONE ELSE THINK SO?

I think "Cocked and Loaded" is cool. I like every song. I think it's
better than there first - not a rough - but the first album cranks too.
Pretty cool live. I liked them better when I saw them in clubs than in
    the Orpheum. - Kim

Tracii Guns changed his name from Tracy to Tracii, and his last name
too. I cut out an article in a magazine and it showed a picture of
him when he graduated from high school. He looked so funny. He didn't
even look like the same person at all.

I met him too at the Channel in Boston. My sister's boyfriends band
opened up for them, because it was also amateur night. I got 3
pictures taken with him but only 1 came out. Thank God. He was so
cool, he was just standing there playing video games and I was the
only one there talking to him.

LA Guns ROCKED last night. Their set was great...the best part was the
Malaraia -- Sex Action segue!! The bassist is sick, and not currently

The band worked pretty well though as a 3 piece...Tracii handled all

I thought the show was great. I was pretty surprised when I saw

Quireboys looked like until Friday night. I thought the singer
looked like Tamie Downe (Is that right - the singer from Faster

I know he's been playin em in all their videos of late, and I saw them

mainly used a Les Paul STD and Performance Guitars hybrid strat (maple

That's pretty wild, him going on about how Strats are great and all in

Actually, I like the feel of the newer Strats. They're using a flatter

Well, that makes Tracii two for zero (He was fired from the *original*

Yes, he WAS the founder. But then again, Robin Crosby was the founder
of RATT, and look at his fate!! Must be something in the LA water

    gh...

    Here is your review --

The LA Guns/Tracii splity was obviously a publicity stunt. Tracii
was there last night, and... (see below for more)

Last year, I saw LA GUNS rock CITI (Now Avalon Ballroom). It was the
first date of the 2nd leg of their Cocked & Loaded tour. Their Bassist
(don't know his name) had a motorcycle accident just days before, so
he was going to catch up with them later. Guitarist Mick Cripps filled
in on bass for the evening. The band totally rocked out!! I was very
    impressed.

This year, the bassist was back, and Mick was back on guitar. What was
interesting is, you didn't miss him (or wouldn't have missed him had he
been gone!). Tracii carries this whole band, plain n simple!!! While
Tracii is no Yngwie Malmsteen, he doesn't need to be...he plays well in
the context of LA GUNS music, and really sets the groove for the rest of
the band...no wonder the band is named after him!

The set opened well. They came out blasting with 3 songs in
seccession. This helped keep the pace going great, but the 4th song was
a mid-tempo groove thing, which threw the set pace off kilter. Then
they did Ballard of Jane, which mired the set even more. BoJ was
followed by Sleezy Come, Sleezy Go, and Rip n Tear...two more mid-tempo
rockers that just never seemed to get the set back up to the high-energy
level they started off with. They vocalist sounded great on most tunes,
but the transposed Ballard of ane sounded very "off", and the missing
vocals on Malaria (couldn't hit the notes) were very noticeable. I
guess what bugs me is he didn't try to compensate.

On the other hand? Tracii was using modified Fender guitars ofr the
recording of Cocked and Loaded, and a lot of stuff has whammy bar-isms
on it. Last year Tracii switched on and off with the modified Fender
and a Gibson Les Paul STD. This year Tracii came out with a black
Les Paul STD, and never got rid of it!! He made use of bending the
neck via the headstock (ouch!) to make up for no vibrato arm. Also
gone are Tracii's fender stacks. Replaced with 3 Randall stacks, with
the new 100wt all valve heads. Sounded good...better than the Fenders
    ...less "grainy".

Mick Cripps was using a Les Paul STD thru JCM 800-based Marshall Stacks.
The bassist still had a Fender endorsement, tho.

All in all, LA GUNS were great, but the only thing weird was their set,
to which I plan to write them a FYI letter about it (the show could
have been great with a better song arrangement).

    **************************************************************************

Boa and some other weird band from LA opened the show. Boa was Boa ...
they are a good band, but again there are things about thgem and their
set that bug me, and I would change if I could.

The poser band from LA was just AWFUL!! A classic example of too much
makeup, quasi-transvestite clothing, mucho facial and body poses, and
lame songs make up for one really lousy band. The highlight of this
set was when one of the bassist bleached-out dreadlock hair extensions
    fell off!

So Tracii was using a Les Paul, huh? Who would have figured? I kind
of liked the modified Fender sound from Cocked & Loaded myself. He's
obviously dropped his Fender endorcement, so no more Fender/Heartfield
    guitars and amps.

I noticed a Randall ad with him in last month's Guitar Player mag and I
thought it was kind of odd. Seems like every Randall amp I've heard
has this nasty high end distortion sounding thing that really grates on
me. Nice to hear they didn't sound bad for him.

He was also holding an IBANEZ guitar in that ad. I'm starting to lose
respect here, he's turning into an endorcement slut like Reb Beach!

I donno about the new direction LA Guns is going. I bought Hollywood
Vampires awhile back and listened to it a couple of times and ended up
listening to other stuff instead. It was *ok*, but just didn't seem to
have the energy of the earlier material. Kind of boring actually, I
    was disappointed.

    Really...lets look at this --

Amps endorsed by Tracii in last 3 years: Guitars in last 3 years:

    o Marshall o BC Rich
    o Fender o Fender
    o Hiwatt o Heartfield
    o Marshall o Gibson
    o Randall o Ibanez

I think it comes down to...Tracii don't have a lot of bucks, AND he
sounds the same through whatever he plays, so... ??? (wtf syndrome)

    >Seems like every Randall amp I've heard has this nasty high end
    >distortion sounding thing that really grates on me. Nice to hear
    >they didn't sound bad for him.

Sounded a lot like the Randall's that Tesla used on their TGRC album.
They are the smae amps, fwiw.

C&L. Live, songs from Hollywood Vampires *really* rocked out, tho.

Man, that may be *worse* then Reb Beach! Did he actually *endorce*

LA Guns performed a couple of songs live on MTV this weekend. They
were playing (in the rain, looked like) at Daytona Beach as part of
    MTV's Spring Break special.

I only caught the second half of one song, and then the last song of
their set ("Some Lie For Love"), so I was kind of bummed that I didn't
see the whole thing. I don't think they could have done more then
    three songs though.

FWIW, I didn't care for Mick Cripps sound that much (when I could hear
it, the mix was whacked). Tracii was playing a Washburn Nuno-like
guitar and it sounded good, but he was too loud. The vocals sounded
totally dry and believe me, that dude *needed* some effects or
    something!

All in all, I'd watch it again, but it wasn't what I'd call a top
notch performance. Watch for reruns of that segment, I'm sure MTV will
play the heck out of it like they always do with these things. FWIW,
Markey Mark, PM Dawn, and someone else also played in the same segment
    (weird mix of stuff...)

Sure thing there, BuckyBob! Actually, that was the reason I missed the
first song by both LA Guns & MrBig...I couldn't stomach the other crap
and flipped through the channels waiting for them to be over.

...but Marky Mark does have killer pecs. ;^)

    Hmmm...

What albums have LA Guns released ??

I've got Cocked And Loaded (AWESOME!) and I know how to play a tune
off of Hollywood Vampires called "Kiss My Love Goodbye" (but i've not
heard the damn thing !)... (killer tune I might add :)

Anyway, I know of those two albums - is there another ?? I was cleaning
house getting ready to move and found a tape that Scary gave me a LONG
time ago with LA Guns written on it, but no title. Is there a third
    album I don't know about ??

How about a discography from a hardcore LAG fan ??

    Seriously.....L.A. Guns are history.

Tracii was fired. Phil wanted to do weird songs and the band didn't
want to ...So he bailed. Then they said "We suck we might as well give

605.133Help me out with that song title, someone!GOES11::G_HOUSELow self opinionMon Sep 28 1992 17:0518
The first (self titled) album had a killer song that I can't remember
the name of. Something Highway, or Highway something or something
about a highway or something like that (I'm sure someone will remind
me...). They had a video for it with them all riding Harley's around.

That tune absolutely *cranked*!!! I thought the minor hit "Sex Action"
    was mostly lame.

My analysis of their discography is that the first album had a couple
of gems, but was mostly filler material. Cocked and Loaded rocked all
the way through, consistantly killer. And Hollywood Vampires was like
their first album again, a couple of good songs and a bunch of mediocre
    stuff.

Coop: Hollywood Vampires, borrow it from me before you buy it...
    Caveat Emptor.

I just heard the tail end of the new Guns, tune, didn't catch the
title though. Sounds like LA Guns, nothing new or too different,
I believe its called Vicous Circle. From what I heard it sounds
pretty good, if you like LA Guns.

605.138PLAYING IT AS WE TYPE...KDCA01::CDCUP_TORRENTue May 30 1995 14:5513
Well, the new CD is called Vicious Circle. Not bad still, giving
it a few listens. I just noticed, that, they don't have a drummer
anymore, and there was 6 different drummers on the CD. New/Old drummer,
Bones does 6 songs, Myron Grombacher 4, Nickey Alexander 1, Doni
Grey 1, Old drummer Steve Riley 1, and Guitarist Mick Cripps drum
    programmed 1.

Its a different style of LA Guns, more raunchey guitar, but
at the same time quite a few slow songs. Does anyone know whos drumming
on tour, and if any or all those other drummers were studio drummers
    or drummers from other bands.
