604.0. "Black Oak Arkansas" by SHAPES::COURTNEYM (And this bird you cannot change) Thu Jul 13 1989 01:34

Was buzzin round the locale Record fayre in Sunny Blazingjoke
when came across two Black Oak Arkansas "Raunch and Roll Live"

Being a bit of a southern boogie fan, Skynyrd, Hatchet, Blackfoot,
Satelites, I had heard the earlier albums were pretty good.

The only album that I have (from Reckless Records, Soho - round
the corner form Shades) is "Balls of Fire" which just didn't compare
with the way some of the reviews rave about them.

Have been trying to find the album for *years*...and I find *two*,
one of which is a DJ pre-release 'demo' with artwork included.
Since I collect records to listen to mainly, I've no interest
in having two that sound the same and so if anyone's interested,
mail me, otherwise I'll flog the demo to Timebeat in Basingstoke.
The live album is rare as rocking horse excrement in the UK, the
    demo presumably rarer still.

Any other Arkansas fans out there? Still alive?
I'll post the discography (UK version) in a later reply
I gather they re-formed a couple of years ago - any info on this?

Speedking (whose still tracking down that Foghat Live )

PS - I bet half a crown Cat is the first to spot/reply to this topic...

"When Electricity Came To Arkansas" off Raunch And Roll is a killer
tune. I've been trying to find that one in the "oldies" bins but
no luck. That album brings back some good memories .... 8^)

I saw them open once for Grand Funk Railroad. They S**KED. It
sounded like every guitar was tuned differently. You couldn't make
    any sense of the music.
Their studio albums were great. I saw them a year later on tv taped at
a live show (California jam) and they sounded great. The only tune
I can remember off the top of my head is "Jim Dandy to the rescue".

They recently got back together, within the last year or so, and put
out a new record which (I believe) is all instrumental. It was praised
pretty highly in some of the guitar magazines. I've never heard it and
    don't know what it's called.

Re. "When Electricity Came to Arkansas"

On the collection I have (Hot & Nasty), there is a portion of "chanting"
before the song starts. It also happens to be the same exact chanting
found before the Woodstock version of "Soul Sacrifice" by Santana.

I always wondered what the connection was. Anybody know - don't have
the dates, so don't know which was first. Or is this just some
    coincidence?
