590.0. "Heavy Metal Medicine" by 49ER::R_WAMELING (I like to ride my bike.) Fri Jun 30 1989 22:43

I wasn't sure where to post this so mod's feel free to mod. it.

I'd like to hear from other guitarists on this pheneomenon.

The lead guitar player in my band has been playing for about 8 years
and has been un-employed for about a month.

So naturally for the past month he has been practicing a good solid
    5 - 8 hours a day, every day.

About a week ago he started noticing what looked like white pockets
on the tips of his fingertips. It looked like they were under his
callouses. They were not air pockets or water pockets. They are
solid skin. But pale white color.

Now he says his hand is going numb. While he's playing!!
Like his fingers are falling asleep.

Apparently the numbness starts at the tip of his middle finger and
works it's way down, then moves on to cover his other fingers too
until his whole hand is numb.

Once again this is happening while he's playing.

The only thing I could think of is mabye the blood isn't making
it from his arm into his hand. He doesn't wear anything on his
    wrist.

Has anyone else heard of this???

590.2Hmmm...sounds seriousCSC32::G_HOUSESpeak, Strike, RedressSun Jul 02 1989 21:016
I haven't heard of anything like that either, but there was a
discussion of various playing related ailments in the GUITAR conference
not long ago. You may want to check that one out and post your
question there too, as there are more guitar players reading that file.

It coould be a form of "Tendonitis". The inflamation of the tendons
    in the hand.

This could be a lot of rubbish, but I have heard of this happening
and it was attributed to Tendonitis.

Whitesnake's Adrian Vandenberg is currently suffering from Tendonitis
    I believe.

It used to happen to me but then I Stopped wearimg my watch when
    I would play.
590.6Same goes for anything that might restrict circulationCSC32::G_HOUSEBe excellent to everyone!Wed Jul 05 1989 16:136
I can't wear my watch when I play either. It doesn't do anything to my
fingertips though, just makes my fingers feel strange. Actually I get
the same thing when typing sometimes, so I generally don't wear my
    watch at work either.

590.7Quick Doc. I got my fingers in this bag here!49ER::R_WAMELINGI like to ride my bike.Wed Jul 05 1989 18:5517
This guy is the kinda guy who wouldn't go to the doctor til his
    fingers fell off.

Going on the hunch that it might be tendonitis I'll suggest that
he do what my doctor told me when I had tendonitis.

Go ahead and practice on it and immediately after, ice for 10 min.
on then 10 min. off then repeat. I had tendonitis in my right forearm
and was lifting weights and this cure worked.

But with fingertips turning "dead skin" white I'm wondering if
tendonitis can cut off circulation? He does not wear anything on
    his wrist.

Whatever it is, it doesn't effect his playing.

I get the "white pockets under the calous" syndrome too, but my hand
doesn't get numb. Tell him to see a doc. Tell him to relax his damn
    hand when he plays !!!!

nobody is going to see this since this note is so old, but just in
case......not that i'm a doctor, but this sounds like Carpal Tunnel
Syndrome....(CTS).....if left untreated it can get serious....it
happens as a result of very repetitive motion of the hands, fingers,
wrists...etc......hits' people in all professions, guitar players and
drummers are very susceptible actually...........anyone that does the
same thing over and over again......anyway, it's something to bring up
    to a qualified doctor............../karen

My mother has that, pretty nasty I guess. Of
course we will see this, most people use next
unseen, so it will automatically go to this
