571.0. "Jethro Tull" by ANT::SLABOUNTY (The word for today is legs ...) Thu Jun 22 1989 13:33

I don't know much about 'em, but what I do know is that I like
	alot of their stuff.

	Locomotive Breath
        Aqualung
	Skating Away
	Cross-Eyed Mary

	(So I'm drawing a blank!)

	Anyone wanna continue?

Well, they aren't heavy metal, but *if* I were to smoke a pound of
funny stuff, I'd pick a Tull album to listen too...

I've always like the "hippy-stuff" like Tull, The Dead, Jefferson
Airship, Moody Bluez etc... Make me wanna tie-dye a shirt...

Personally, there were only a few Jethro Tull songs that I liked. I
especially disliked most of the popular ones (that got lots of airplay)
and amongst those, disliked the newer popular ones the most (Ex: "Farm
on the Freeway" was ok the first couple of times I heard it, makes me
    want to puke now).

571.10Have you seen my spectacles, said hareSHAPES::HARRISONPThu Jun 29 1989 12:2322

More Tull albums, though the best ones have already been listed.

Living in the Past (double, one live LP, one studio)
Crest of a Knave (the new one, I think it sounds like D*re Str**ts)
    This Was (the first album)
Under Wraps (not exactly a classic)
Assorted best ofs (Mu, 25 years boxed set, etc...)
Passion Play (not a bad one, especially if you like tales of hares
    		  who lose their spectacles)

Ian Anderson also did a "solo" album with Peter John Vittesse playing
keyboards, called "Walk into Light". PJV also played keyboards with
    Tull on Under Wraps.

They will be playing Hammy-O in September sometime, tickets are
    bloody expensive and selling fast.

Finally, a misprint on the label of their first single (I can't
remember what it was called) gave the band's name as

    			Jethro Toe!

Well I've not got much to say, most (if not all) of the albums have
    been named.

I've got my Tull Tix for the Hammy - O, (fairly reasonably priced)
And I'm looking forward to it.

The last Tull concert I went to (Wembley Arena) was the best concert
ever, so this should be good.

Tull are great live. I saw them last on the Under Wraps tour at
Hammersmith, loads of energy, visual jokes and incredible playing.

I think I saw the tickets for this tour advertised at over 11 pounds,
but that probably includes a booking fee. Even so, as a dedicated
Marquee maniac I'm more used to paying a fiver to see a band.

    Still, Tull are worth it.

I saw them on the Aqualung, Thick As A Brick, and Passion Play
tours. All three go down in my book as some of the best shows
    I have ever seen.

I also agree with the similarity to Dire Straits on the Crest of
    A Knave album.

Being brought up amoung hippys and bikers and people into rock I
know quite a few Jethro Tull followers. Infact Ian Anderson lives
over the hill from my sis who lives on Skye.

Actually I think his music is weird, interesting and totally
    listenable.

Aqualung is a masterpiece and probably his best selling album ..

Alright I admit it maybe I am a wee bit of a hippy in some respects
    but who cares!!!

I got the new album yesterday.

It's really good, I've only listened to it once though.

At the moment I would rate Crest of a Knave as being better, but that may change
as I listen to Rock Island more.

I picked up a copy of Rock Island last night and listened to it
without the benefit of festival atmosphere or Wadworth's Old Timer.
It's still a great album, the best they've done since Broadsword
    in my opinion.

It was interesting to see that Martin Allcock is now part of the
band. At this rate Jethro Tull and Fairport Convention are in danger
of becoming one and the same thing - something that Ian Anderson
is apparently trying to avoid according to an article in the Guardian.

The same article also says that Anderson claims to write songs partly
to amuse himself and partly to impress the other members of the
    band...

Writing the last reply and going on about who's who in the band
got me thinking - does anyone know what other ex-Tull members have
    gone on to do?

Naturally there is the continuing movement of people between Fairport
and Tull, also I recently saw Clive Bunker playing with a band called
Poormouth. Anyone got any news on other ex-Tullies?

    Hi Porky

I'm at the Crescent, Basingstoke (UK). Where are you?

I reckon that this album has a less Dire Straits-ish sound to it
than the last one. Maybe it's because there's more flute work on
it, and more upbeat tunes than on the last album.

Rock Island is definitely one of those albums where you find more to
it each time you listen to it.

Regarding ex-Tull personnel, John Evan who did keys on every album
from Benefit up to Warchild, has his own company which does renovations
on buildings. He left university to join Tull but never returned.
Apparently he was doing quite well in his studies towards a degree
    in pharmacology.

Has anybody got a listing of bootleg pressings that are available?
The ones I've managed to find are:

    My God (1971)
The Forum 1973 (Passion Play,Thick As A Brick)
    Live From Central Park (1980)
    Hand In Glove (probably 1985)

A buddy of mine from college also made a recording of Tull in 1971
doing Aqualung and Benefit. There's also a few videos out. Slipstream
is the only official one I've seen but there is also the 1985 German
TV video of Jethro Tull doing a celebration concert of J.S. Bach's
    birthday.

"Stand Up" had great artwork. When you opened it up, a paper
pop-up of the band members *stood up* inside. Really innovative
    idea.

I saw Tull 3 times in the early 70's (Benefit/Aqua; Thick; Passion)
and they will always remain in my memory as some of the best shows
I have ever seen. Really well put-together.

I saw Tull do the Passion Play in 73 and it is still the most amazing
thing I've seen in my life PERIOD! Was that version of "Stand Up"
a British release? My first copy was bought here in Canada about
1972 and it did not have the pop-up. It looked like the Benefit
album would have had that since the back cover showed the group
    as cardboard cut-outs.

Over here in Britain, there was a documentary about Tull and Mr Anderson. A very
well put together programme called Fish 'n' Sheep 'n' Rock 'n' Roll.

It showed Ian and the bands life, and how he mixes his two loves of Rock Music
with his Salmon and Sheep farming in Skye.

It was very informative and I hope they repeat it soon.

Saw JT last night at Hammy-O. Great show, mainly modern stuff with
a few oldies thrown in - Aqualung and Locomotive Breath of course,
plus a Mother Goose and a fabulous rendition of Nothing's Easy.

Yup I was there of course (27th Sept Actually).

The show was exacly that, not just a concert. The whole band were a set
of entertainers, it was more like attending a musical with humerous
interludes. (I liked the bit with the girl in T-shirt and knickers
    stoking the steam piano).
They took a few light hearted shots at Metallica, such as projecting a
picture of them with their faces blanked out while singing 'Thick as a
Brick'. And also introducing Steel Monkey as a song from 'Crest of a
Knave" - You know the Heavy-Metal Album. There was nothing really bad,
all just a bit of fun. Even in the programme they had a clue to the
treasure hunt that involved Metallica fans shooting down you're
    helicopter.
An excellent concert, that could have been made better (IMO) by
substituting some of the songs they did do in the 2hr 10 mins with more
off other albums. Strip cartoon for example. (One of my faves.)

They ran a treasure hunt competition in the programme and offered
dinner for two with them as a prize. They also wondered if other bands
took up their lead of competitions what prizes they may offer. They put
    forward these few:

Elton John - A ticket to Watford football club.
Michael Jackson - A trip to the moon (one way only Whacko?)
Bros _ Backstage passes to their 20th anniversary concert
Fairport Convention - Your very own country pub
The Who - Personalised hearing aid.
The Stones - His and her's travel passes (OAP for him, and
under 16 for her - Sorry Bill)
Pink Floyd - Camera with speeds up to 1/2000th of a sec to
    			  successfully freeze the action
Genesis - Your very own tax-free Sitka spruce tree
Paul McCartney	- An invitation to play on his next album
Jethro Tull - All weather hair-piece, gauranteed not to flap
    			  while jogging
Jason Donovan	- Kylie's Knickers (he should be so lucky)
Yes - $1,000,000 if you can correctly name the members
    			  of the band
Metallica - An invitation to the Grammy Awards

    Brynn.

Yahoo! Got my tickets for Tull on Oct. 27 in Montreal. Kinda nice
to have a preview from you guys. Has anyone seen the 20 Years of
Jethro Tull video? It's got some really decent footage from '69
plus interviews with Anderson and many European fans and Chris
Wright/Terry Ellis who admit that Chrysalis records was formed solely
because MGM records screwed them on the "Jethro Toe" misprint and
wouldn't give the band 50 bucks for the session fees.

Rock Island finally available in Canada and is, as usual, a great
recording. Still, I wish Anderson would let Robin Black do the
    engineering again.

Ahhhh...Slipstream. It took me five years to find that one. Actually,
a buddy of mine found it in Las Vegas when he was vacationing there
and he bought 2 copies (1 Beta, 1 VHS). Have you seen the German
TV broadcast of Tull doing a celebration of J.S. Bach's 300th birthday?
It features Eddy Jobson (like Slipstream) and Robin Black is doing the live
mix as well. Too bad about Ian's voice though. He never hits a bad
note but, due to his throat problems, a few get buried.

This is a piece (and I stress PIECE) of an article that was
in the June issue of RIP Magazine. Ian Anderson does go on
to say more about the Grammy episode but I don't feel like
typing the entire thing in, so suffice it to say that this
isn't exactly his ONLY way of feelings on the Grammy episode
    	in '89.

...One such matter, as you might guess, is the 1989 Grammys.

"The Grammy Awards ceremony is a piece of pure Hollywood
show business," he emphasizes, pointedly arching his eyebrows.
"What the hell is rock music doing in the context of people
who actually come all dressed up to the nines to be seen there?
It's just like the Academy Awards -- it's complete Bull$sh!t!
And guys like Metallicaeven want to go there and play!" He
shakes his head in disgust at the whole scene. "A group like
Metallica needs a Grammy on the wall like a hole in the head,
because that should be the antithesis of what groups like that
    	are about."

I just heard yesterday from a friend who saw the advance list
for the Great Woods Concert Series this summer.

Jethro Tull / Emerson, Lake & Palmer

Don't know what month, but this could be a tremendous summer
    	for Arena Rock.

I was lucky to see ELP at the Orpheum in Boston 3 years ago,
they had just released a record then.

I've never seen Tull perform, if this show happens, it'll be
    	hard to get tickets...
