549.0. "International Rock Awards 1989/1990" by COORS::G_HOUSE (No, you're not there...) Thu Jun 01 1989 02:53

I'm watching the "International Rock Awards" show right now. Like we
really needed *another* music awards thing, right? But it's kind of
    interesting anyway.

Since I've been watching (about 15 min), Living Colour and Guns & Roses
have both won awards. Living Colour for "Best Newcomer" and G&R for
    "Artists of the Year".

It's not over yet, but I'm not staying logged in that long, so I just
    thought I'd mention it...

What I liked about it - The groups actually played LIVE. No lip-synch
crap. Tin Machine Was Good, and the Jam at the end was pretty decent.

What I hated - Who was one of the prime sponsors? Michelob. Who
    won the awards?
    Eric Clapton - best guitaist
    Steve Windwood - best keyboards
    Phil Collins - drummer

I see a disturbing trend here!

There were a few bogus awards, but hey...could a group like Living
Colour get recognized at the Grammys? I don't think so!

I loved all the boos from the audience when Madonna won that one! I
    was dying laughing!

I couldn't believe that Eric Clapton would win a best guitar player
    award over Joe Satriani.

I thought that Tin Machine was HOT! Definately convinced me to go get
    this album soon.

Nor could I believe that Phil Collins won over Rick Allen.
I thought for sure he would get the award having only one
    	arm and such.

I didn't watch the whole thing, but instead taped it and
watched it as I was getting ready for work this morning...
I got a big kick out of Alice Cooper saying that Jethro

Well, I was never a big fan of Phil Collins (nor Genesis, really) until I
saw him on the Eric Clapton tour. I had seats behind the stage for the
Providence show, and ended up watching Phil for most of the night - he *is*
an incredible drummer! He wasn't there to sing, or to be in the spotlight.
He was simply there to play drums, and did a *great* job.

I'm still not a fan of his hit-making productions, nor his songwriting. But
I do really respect his talent as a drummer.

(and that's just _part_ of the song...)

I saw a thing on eMpTyV today about the awards. They said most
people had mixed emotions about it and were very cynical about the
whole thing. It was said at the beginning of the show that the
awards were going to be for 'unsung hero's of the music industry.
those people who only get recognized by having their name on the
record sleeve'. So who got those awards? Clapton, Sting, Madonna...

Yes, definatly 'unsung' people, huh? 8^)

Keith Richards only came because they guanenteed him a 'living legend'
award before hand, and E. Clapton only came because Keith asked
    him to.

On last funny thing about the show. It ranked DEAD LAST in the ratings

This show turned out to be almost as much of a joke
as the American Music Awards. IMHO.

Granted, there were some classy type acts on there
that probably wouldn't have "lowered" themselves to
appear on other awards shows i.e., Lou Reed, Elton
	John.

However, where were the metal bands/awards? Skid
Row? Give me a break. (sorry just my opinion.)

Okay, Aerosmith was cool, as was Clapton, Billy Joel, ...
actually the whole idea of the show was pretty cool,
BUT, it needs more diversity. The Stones can't win
~every~ award. There are almost as many different "types"
of rock as there are rock bands.

There were no thrash bands nominated, there were only
a couple of metal bands and how do you compare Allanah
Myles (sp?) to Skid Row? In my opinion, (I'm very
	opinionated today), it's impossible.

Also, I appreciate the fact that Rock is basically a
rebellious symbol, however, as rock has grown up I would
hope that it's listeners and players have also grown up.
Gary Busey's antics were class-less. I'm not saying we
shouldn't be rebellious, but we should excercise some tact.
Particularly when in the public eye. This kind of behaviour
	only strengthens our critic's cause.

	Any other comments/reactions/criticisms out there?

549.39Bogus, as usualCOOKIE::G_HOUSENo, I'm very, very shy.Thu Jun 07 1990 23:2928
Yeah, I saw most of the show and thought that other then the performances,
which I mostly enjoyed, it was totally bogus. Another "lets give the old
timers an award" show IMO.

Eric Clapton as Most Valuable Player - Guitar? Come on. I like Clapton's
music a lot, but I don't consider him the end-all-be-all player that some
people want to view him as. There were other players nominated for the same
award that I considered much more applicable (Joe Satriani, Jeff Beck).

Billy Joel as Most Valuable Player - Keyboards? Get real...

Both Steven Tyler and Joe Perry looked good and healthy, for a change.

I thought those two geeks from Skidrow acted like kids and seemed totally
out of place.

I would have liked more "non-mainstream" music represented.

Anyone catch what Elton John said about Sam Kinnison when they shut down
the sound? He referred to him as a pig in the sentence previous...

There's no need to apologize, while there are several existing notes on
awards shows, I don't remember one for this show. I changed the title to
something more revelant then "Did anyone see this" though.

    	re: lisa,

I agree with you. Skid Row against Alannah Myles for best
new artist....not fair IMO. I feel that they shunned metal
all together. Other than the Skids being nominated and
presenting...that was it. And the Stones, well, I don't like
    	them to begin with so...

And Greg I agree with you too. It did seem like an 'old timers'
show. The Stones and Aerosmith took the most awards that night.

All in all, it wasnt that great. Oh and I heard on the radio
that the show was on an hour tape delay and that Elton used
the word f**k in the sentence they bleeped out.

I understand Elton's point - but there again, I think
it should have been kept off screen, just as our personal
differences are taken off-line. He could have just
said "I'm doing this show under protest" followed by a
short & simple statement why, instead he chooses to make
	a scene. I personally don't care about Elton's & Sam's
feelings for each other and I don't think anyone else
will either, people will just take that as another bad
example set for their children. This goes for all the
sniping that went on between Dee Snider & David Cassady,
Ed Begley & Laurie Smith too. I'm not sure whether any
of that was scripted or not, but it sure as heck wasn't
	funny! IMHO.

and although Eric Clapton deserves a 'legend award' the best guitarist

If you all noticed, none of those awards were titled "best" (as some of you
have been putting in here). Instead, they ambiguously titled them MVP (most
valuable player). This is probably so they could justify giving valid awards
to people that don't technically excell (like Charlie Watts, etc). Perhaps
they thought it would help avoid the "x is better then y" syndrome (which it
didn't).
