518.0. "Colorado Rock Bands" by COMET::HOSMER () Thu Mar 30 1989 02:42

Well hello there fellow Metal Heads. I'm glad to see the interest
in the local metal scene. Especially here in Colorado Springs/Denver
area. There is some good talent here if they could only their sh*t
together.I say that including myself in that mess cause I spent
my share of time in the local scene playing for bands like MERCEDES
and G-FORCE any one out there ever catch any of those.Anyway hope
to have something new here real soon more on the original side then
    either of those ever got.

Well unfortunatlly not that would have been great! That was a name
of a local Denver/CS band we would go down to Arizona and Texas.
I love his style, very tasty I go for moore taste than speed myself.
Ask any women it's not how fast your licks are but how much feeling
you put into them,I agree although I do like a little of both.

Hey, METAL-ED, glad to hear there are some real METAL-hEaD's here
at dec. A buddy and I have been comtemplating opening a bar here
in Colorado Springs. We haven't seriously considered a live band
bar at all but I think you and the other H_Mists may have pointed
out what is needed around here. I've always been into the H_M
scene and would love to take a try at this area. Right now we're
doing up a bar in the Binghamton/Endicott (home of IBM) area of
New York. It's more of a private pub but the concept is going great
    so far!

Oh, how's this sound? I can get Cinderella to open up the bar for
us. I think that'll throw us in the public's eye real fast.

Hi Ed, My name is Skip and I play in an all original band here
in town called Hydra. Really there is no place to play here so we
play at Bangles in Denver. A band I played in about seven years
ago called Albatross followed Mercedes down to Arizona. I saw you
at DJ's here in town and you guys were smoken!! Are you playen with
Steve Banes now? We will be recording at emerald city this next
week and will be losing our base player in the near future. If you
are interested in checking us out send me mail, we practice all
the time. We are a cross between Bon Jovi and Def Leppard.

P.S. YO YODA::COOK to bad we live so far apart, we could trade
some licks I play drums also.

Yes I was, that goes back a number of years but those were some fun
times.Back then there were enough clubs to sustain a band for 4-5
weeks just in Denver. The last singer of Mercedes was also in G-Force
(Jhonny G) After I left G-Force they changed ther name to Autobond
then the drummer Richie Carlson quit and went back to the Bay area
now i guess their looking for a replacement I also heard Jhonny
went back to Reno who knows.

518.15Is it real or is it...April FOOLS! re.10COMET::HOSMERMon Apr 03 1989 12:0710
Well that sounds great if its true, excuse my hesitance but it would
be great for the Springs and for all types of bands not just strickly
metal and thats just not what anyones accustomed to. I know you
don't mean an all original club but one that is willing to bend
a little would be welcomed. A Rock club can't survive on just thrash
or even pop bands but special nights have always done well. Owning
a club and making it work has got to be one of the most difficult
things to pull off I hope you do give it serious consideration.
                         MAKE IT GO!

It sure is a small world sometimes. I taked to Steve about you guy's
and he said you guy's were hot. We are trying to get something going
but it takes time to find people you can write with sometimes.Any
line on good Guitar players, drummers that might be available? Oh
yea Steve says high and wonders if you will be playing anywhere
live in the near future. We would like to here yuor recording when
its done if posible. We've writen about 10 good songs and have gone
thru a few people some didn't like us and some we did'nt like but
were keeping on. Well have a good cold one!

re .15>>	No April's fool. Our bar in NY is still going through
the red tape BS and probably will be for another year or so but
we are already considering expanding. And since I'm out here and
my partner is back there the Springs is a good location. Certainly
needs help around here in the bar scene. But you're right, we'll
probably have to get into verieties but come the weekend it's all
heavy metal as far as I'm concerned.

Ya, my brother is pretty good friends with Fred Coury, the drummer
for Cinderella, and my old girlfriend went to high school with
him and is still pretty good friends with him; my brother asked
him a long time ago about the idea of opening up a club for us and
he said he could get into it. The idea was to pay for all travel
expenses for the band and vacation stay for a week if they'd open
for us. I think it'd be worth it. If it goes through (would more
than likely be a few years from now) I hope to make this area a
vacation resort for bands so they can play for us. Right now I'll
still consider it a dream though.

Ok, here's the scoop. The easiest way to get to The Broadway club
    is:

Take I25 to Lincoln. Turn right on Lincoln (it's one way North).
Follow this to 11th Street and turn left on 11th Street. About a block
up 11th is Broadway and the Broadway club is on the corner there.

Skip (Bob, whatever you want to call him) sez it's pretty easy to
    get to.

I took a jaunt over to Meadow Muffins after softball last
night, and a band called The Wallboards was playing. I was
really impressed....they played a lot of AC/DC, Black
Sabbath, and The Cult (I was only there for one set, soooo)

The drums and the bass where at times drowning out the
guitars, but all in all, they were pretty decent! We spoke
to the lead singer and also the bass player from Head Full of
Zombies (he was there too) and they said they are trying to
get a gig together somewhere. What a show that would be!
	 :-)

Also, Head Full of Zombies will be playing at Renners on the
	 28th and 29th of July.

We were scheduled to play the Gardens on Sept/10, and sell our

we noticed that the artwork wasn't right. The audio really kicks

We should be getting them back soon, and are rescheduled to play

Yeah, I've seen 'em. I thought they sounded real good, but they played

so well because they did a cover of a song by one of my favorite bands,
Racer X, that sounded killer. I was very impressed.

_ NoWhere Fast_

    4 piece band

The name of the band said it all...that's rxactly where they went only
quicker! They had some incredible lead ins that just completely died by
the time they got into the first verse. They kind of had a Beastie Boys
sound going for them only without the rap, which is unfortunate because
at least that would've given them a *sound*. the drummer wasn't half
bad but he wasn't enough to make up for their lack of timing and lack
of any continuity within the band itself. They had absolutely no stage
presence and their sound was horrible- you could hear each instrument
*too* distinctively and wasn't due to bad mixing.
Overall this band has no future and needs to rethink their goals!

    _Zen Radio_

    3 piece band

This band had a better look although it really didn't match their
sound- which would be considered a little more alternative. The sound
was a much tighter sound then NoWhere Fast and it was obvious that
these guys spent some time and effort in being very serious about their
music. They had a great stage presence and were very interactive with
the audience. On a couple of their songs 'Shifting Sand' and Take Your
Place' (the singer especially) had a Rush sound to it! They have one CD
out locally and are definetly worth seeing/listening to!

    _The Dark_

3 piece + singer played off and on

How can I put this? I was so blown away by these guys I can hardly
think of strong enough words to describe how incredible they are!!!
They had a great stage presence; very professional and I mean that in
the most complimentry way! Their sound was a heavier sound than the two
previous bands and they were *T*I*G*H*T*!!!! The drummer (who also
doubled as their keyboardist) was beyond incredible!!! The mix was
beautiful- in your face, blow your eardrums out loud without any
distortion. They were extremely original and extremely good!!!!
I give them Two Thumbs Up (way up) and Five Stars...these guys are top
    notch!!!! Impressed beyond belief!!!!

Did you ever get Zen Radio's CD? I was wondering how it is. I'll
reserve opinion on them 'cause I haven't seen 'em in a couple of years,
but they pretty much sucked back then. Serious problems keeping their
vocals in key and the lead dude had a really odd inflection to his
    voice that really bothered me.

They seem to play pretty regularly at the Clubhouse, I'm gonna try and
    catch 'em sometime before long.

echoed the same thoughts about the drummer as I did in my first review
of them.....he is *EXCEPTIONALLY* GOOD!!!! The crowd was really into

They opened for Zebra (which IMO) was a mistake or should I say
should've been turned around cuz Zebra SUCKED!!!!

Maybe they had an off night or maybe it was because they really
couldn't compare to The Dark, but their set was DULL!

Not much of a "hit" if nobody ever heard of it, dude. The only Zebra
song I've ever heard of was "Who's Behind The Door". Maybe they did
better in New England then any of the places I lived...

Zebra's classic - they were big in Syracuse, too, not just NE. I
remember buying their first and Fastway's first on the same day.

I think it's available in Japan, but I really don't want
to pay $25-$35 to have it imported. 8^(

I checked out a couple bands this weekend......
(I don't have time nor the desire to do an in-depth review, but
    here's the quick overall opinion...)

    Assassin- from Denver
4-man band but I couldn't figure out if it was two rythm guitars and a
bassist or if one of them was actually *supposed* to be doing leads...
anyways withOUT that one waste of flesh the band was pretty good.

Angelic Rage- Not as tight as the first band but more my taste in
music...'in your face', HARD-Core metal!!! But the singer could go.

Titan Force- Can we say BLEEEECKKKK!!!!! What overrated arrogant
a$$holes!!!! I didn't even bother to stay for their whole set.

Nat, where did you catch these guys? There seems to be a lack of
talent round these parts lately, all the bands comin through town
really stink. The Dark won't be playing round here for a while.

Do you guys actually like this club? I've only been there twice,
and there have been bunches of little kids hanging around.

Not that the Gardens is any more exciting, at least the crowd is a
little more "mature", not in mental state, but age. :-)

Yea, there are allways kids at PE. Thats a money thing though. You
know, (kids+thrash=$$$$$$). I like the stage setup, and the bar is
decent. It also depends on which bands you go to see.

Really! How much money is there to be made of a bunch of 18+ who
are drinking nothing but 1 or 2 $2.00 sodas. What's the cover
charge at this place? Shit, if there's money to made from this,
I'll open up my house and let 'em kill each other....
