470.0. "Wargasm" by ECAD::ALOSCOOR (NOT.) Fri Feb 10 1989 12:32

    I can't believe it. I coulda sworn I saw a note in here for these
    guys. Oh well, if there is and I missed it, delete this one. If
    not...

    This note is your typical "band note". Write anything about WARGASM
    that you want.
    If you haven't seen them live yet, I would strongly suggest that
    you do. They are a band that should not be missed.

    They had an EP out when they were MANIAC, and their newest [and
    only] album out now has been out since September and is called
    'Why Play Around'.

    The album is really good. You might've heard one of their songs
    on BCN....'Revenge'....

    I only saw them once and I don't have their album, but I though
    they were the ballz! One song was about a pack of wolves, anyone
    know the name of it. It really cranked. (I saw them at Narcisus
    [sp?] on a HM Wednesday.)

    My SO knows one of those guys and we saw him in the grocery store
    the other day. I guess their album was one of the (if not THE)
    top sellers in the college radio market around the country or some
    similar distinction. This guy was saying they're really stuck though,
    that their album has sold lots and the record co. is screwing them.
    He said nothing has changed (club billing, tours, $$, style of living)
    in their lives, they haven't seen a dime and the record co. is saying
    that *they* owe the record co. $$. He said the only difference
    is that now you can buy their album across the country and that
    it has no bearing on them at all.

    He also said he is afraid the record co. is going to mess up their
    future chances, because in most cases, you only get your "15 minutes"
    once and if you don't capitalize, forget it.

    This was all just supermarket chat, tho.

470.7What kind of heavy ?KETJE::VLASIUFri Apr 27 1990 12:378
Can someone give a more detailed description of Wargasm's music ? I have the
occasion to buy "Why play arround" for a good price but this is not a reason
because if I don't like it I don't keep it. I like progressive metal and also
very heavy and fast (Annihilator, Metallica) but I'm less hot for thrash if it's
not very good technically. I like *some* Anthrax and Slayer but not all.
I like also real singing.

    I'd highly recommend WARGASM!!! They are great. Their new album
    should be out soon. There music is METALLICAish but, not really. You
    can understand what he's singing. I wouldn't compare the group to a
    band like Nuclear Assault (not as thrashy). They also RULE live!!!!
470.9ThanxKETJE::VLASIUFri Apr 27 1990 14:506
    Thanks Kim for the info, I think I'll check it. Is the music also
    variated (like Metallica's "Master..") ? I've also heard on MTV a song
    from Nuclear Assault and the lyrics were fine, but it's true they are
    quite thrashy (but I liked the song and the clip).

    I like Nuclear Assault don't get me wrong. It's just that sometimes
    it's hard to understand their lyrics. With MOST of WARGASM'S songs you
    can understand the lyrics. On their album they have alot of diversity
    if you ask me. Definately pick it up. -Kim

470.13Very good impressionKETJE::VLASIUThu May 03 1990 08:3218
Thanks Kim,

I really like Wargasm ! They practice precise and heavy metal music and the
singer is fine. An effective 3 man band. Looking to the titles and hearing
the style I wonder if Annihilator has not been influenced somewhat by Wargasm.
All the tracks are fine and my favourites are: Revenge, Wasteland, Sudden death,
Wargasm, Undead and Le cou cou (very good guitar). They are very heavy but less
demolishing than Annihilator, which I find is one of the heaviest and fastest
ever. The recording is also very good so I'm happy with this CD (especially
that I paid it 40% of the normal price..).
I fully recommend "Why play around" to anyone who likes Metallica, Metal Church,
Annihilator or Flotsam and Jetsam (another good one). I wish also Metallica
goes back to Master of Puppets days.
Do you like Annihilator Kim ?

Sorin
PS: I've listened also Savatage's "Hall of the mountain king" which I own now
and it confirmed my first (very good) impression.

    RE: Sorin

    Glad you liked it!! They are in the process of working on their second
    album and I've heard a few cuts off it. IT'S GREAT!! I like the whole
    album but, the songs you picked as favorites are mine too!! I
    especially love Le Cou Cou (the never ending guitar solo that I never
    get sick of) I have really listened much to Annihilator, I've heard
    good things about them. I like F&J, & Metallica maybe I should check
    out Annihilator. They are really heavy??? I know my brother has their
    new tape maybe I'll copy it. Can you describe them a little more to
    me?? - Kim
470.15If you like Wargasm you may like AnnihilatorKETJE::VLASIUThu May 03 1990 14:5219
    Re. Kim

    Annihilator is surely *very* heavy in the same way Wargasm is but even
    more agressive. I can qualify them as very high quality techno-trash or
    speed metal. They play with many variations the guitar solos are fast
    and excellent and the singer is *a very heavy* one. And this maybe the
    problem as some people don't like the singer (Randy Rampage) but in my
    personal opinion he's powerful, original, with a wide range and very
    very aggresive (John Oliva is also quite aggresive when screaming).
    Don't let you impressed by the first time listening (in a bad way), me
    I have the cassette allways in my car with Metal Church's "The dark"
    and Oliver Magnum. Each time I listen Alice in Hell I enjoy it. And the
    production is first quality. It's much like a very aggresive Wargasm or
    Metallica. Best tracks for me on Alice in Hell are Allison Hell, Human
    Insecticide and well .. all the CD (it's a short one, about 38-39').
    See also note 520 for more opinions but for me they actually are
    between the best heavies.

    As you like Savatage you would surely like Oliver Magnum. If you have
    an occasion try to listen them. Satisfaction guaranteed (less risk than
    for Annihilator).

    I definetly wait for their next CD to include it in my collection. If they
    just keep the quality of "Why play around" it will be already ok.

470.23Amazing RevengeKETJE::VLASIUThu Jun 07 1990 15:206
    I listened again "Why play around" alternatively with Metallica's
    "Ride.." (and Annihilator too). All three albums are very first class
    and stand easily equal comparison.
    "Revenge" is a song to make even Metallica jealous.

    Just a little something I thought might interest you, WARGASM doesn't
    like Metallica at all!!! Usually when, I see them they make some type
    of crack towards them or they start to play "One" wicked distorted and
    then kick in with one of their own tunes. FYI - Kim

    Re. Kim

    Actually I find "Why play around" more enjoyable than Metallica's AJFA
    and also punchier. I like also that they have the humor to joke on
    Metallica. Wargasm have their distinctive style and are as original as
    Metallica was with "Ride the lightning". Wargasm deserves a better
    recognition. I think they are confused with beeing just another thrash
    band because of the name and maybe the album sleeve. For me they are
    not thrashy but pure high quality very heavy metal (just like Metallica
    is also).

470.26New album releasedTPLAB::VLASIUWed Jan 12 1994 10:095
    Wargasm have finally released a new album, "Ugly", which received good
    critics. It appears they continue to play metal with the energy of a
    Slayer.

    Yeah, I kinda remember the place. Went out to see your band there when
    I took my last trip back East about 3.5 years ago. I distinctly
    remember having to walk across about a mile of parking lot and Ken and
    I getting really lost trying to get back to Concord (pretty sure we
    touched at least three states...)
