455.0. "Satriani, Joe" by CSC32::G_HOUSE (The world needs guts) Wed Feb 01 1989 17:08

I was surprised to find no discussion of Joe Satriani here, so here's
a note for discussion of him.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

    HI.

Did anyone watch Dave Letterman last night? I heard somewhere in
this file that Satch was supposed to be on it. I missed it...
did anyone see it and how was it?

455.2Waste of time! I wanted to see an interview!CSC32::G_HOUSEThe world needs gutsWed Feb 01 1989 17:1316
Yes, I watched it. It was completely disgusting. Letterman didn't
have any idea who Satriani was, he didn't interview him, and Joe
didn't get to play a whole song, just at the start and end of the
    commercial breaks with the band.

His playing was excellent, what little there was.

It just puts me in a rage to see Letterman spend 3/4 of the d*mn
show with &*^$^%&% Latoya Jackson and that STUPID snake and not
even have Joe (an incredible talant) speak or play a song. A complete
    waste!

But I hear that's pretty much par for the course with the musical
guests. I really haven't watched his show in about 4 years.

Yes Dave Letterman asked Paul?(the band leader) What song would
come to mind if I was to think of Joe satriani, because it looked
like Dave had no idea of who he was. later didn't Paul? say something
to DL while trying to explain who he was.like I'll take care of
the Music, while you try to take care of the comedy

Joe, is AWSOME !!! I have not yet purchased his latest lp, but
will soon when I have the money.

I think that the song "CRUSH OF LOVE" is fascinating....This is
    one tune I definately have C R A N K I N G in my
Truck, I can't wait to hear the other tunes that he does.

He is an extoadinary guitarist...excellent. I would to see him(joe)
and Eddie Van Halen jam together....that would be BalZ'...no doubt !!! 8-)

I was listening to Bay State Rock sunday night on WAAF and they
played a beattles tune (I can't remember at the moment...shit) by
an other guitarist who is a joe S. copy....maybe it was joe ?????

    RE: (back a few)...
The guitarist that you heard (the JS clone) might have been
Jeff Beck doing an instrumental cover of "She's A Woman" by
The Beatles. Jeff is *NOT* a JS clone as he's been around
since the mid-/late-sixties and was an early rock guitar pioneer
and sound innovator. There are several different things that
Satch does that lead me to believe he was influenced by Beck
(some of his sounds are really reminiscent of Beck on "Blow
    	By Blow"). Just my opinion.

    	joe.
455.12The guy is AMAZING! When's his new album coming out?CSC32::G_HOUSEThe world needs gutsThu Feb 02 1989 13:4614
Well, I went back through my tape last night and watched the few
seconds of Satrianis playing through Lettermans show (carefully
fast forwarding over Latoya Jackson, so as not to be 'infected').

Joe is an awesome player! Some of the things he played showed a
lot of versatility. Even those few seconds made me smile! I love
to listen to a musician like that.

    re: Joe M.

I think I remember reading an interview with Satriani where he said
that Beck was one of his favorites.

The Joe Satriani clone playing a Beatles' song that everyone is trying
to think of, is probably from a Boston band. Didn't .8 say the song
was heard on a Bay State Rock (or whatever) show? And there's an
album out now called something like "Boston Does the Beatles". It's
local bands covering Beatles' songs. So keep guessing.

455.29Joe in BostonUSWAV7::CLELANDDeath metal? Gezundheit...Fri Mar 03 1989 13:2630
Any individual living in the Boston, MA area has had the privelege
to see Joe 3 times in the last year and a half.

I photographed Joe first at the Channel, then again at the Paradise.
(if you're in front of the stage, he just stands right in
front of you while you're snappin' shots) His third show here was
at the Berklee School of music, where his touring drummer, Jonathon
Mover, played a hometown show. (I understand that Jonathon attended
    Berklee)

The crush of love EP, is great, but I prefer the flip side of the
vinyl, with Jonathon, and Stuart Hamm on bass. Stu is amazing...
As a three piece effort, with no vocals, the record is stunning.
If Joe ever comes to your town, see him. You won't regret it.
If you can see him in a small club, double your effort to attend.

If you live in NY city, invite Mr. Letterman to join you.

One small note, Joe was originally billed as, "the man who taught
Steve Vai how to play". I heard that Joe hails from the north
shore of Long Island, NY. (Great Neck?) Can anyone confirm it?
Does that insinuate that Steve Vai is from Long Island as well?
Didn't Steve play for Frank Zappa at one time? Joe never played
with Zappa, did he? I have heard that in 1988, Steve Vai jumped up
on stage with Joe & Jonathon & Stu... rumor has it, at least twice.

Good gawd, imagine drumming for Joe S. & Steve V., at the same time?

    >Didn't Steve play for Frank Zappa at one time? Joe never played
    >with Zappa, did he?

Vai play with Zappa just after he got out of Berzeklee. (18 years
old). Berklee has all his recital tapes in the library...he was
more amazing at 18 than thestuff he's doing with DLR now....listen
to those tapes...no question in your mind why he got the Zappa gig.
Joe Satch never played with Zappa.

    >I have heard that in 1988, Steve Vai jumped up on stage with Joe &
    >Jonathon & Stu... rumor has it, at least twice.

Not heard of that...quite possible though.

I wish DLR had let Joe open for the ROTH tour instead of Posion. It was
in the planning, but DLR didn't think Joe would `draw'. If I was Vai
I'd tell him to go F himself.

Joe Satriani has a new song on the soundtrack for the (at this point
unreleased) film "Say Anything". I just heard it on the radio.
It's more of a basic rockin' song than most of the previous material,
and IMO (from having heard it all of once...) was that it was neither
as emotional or as creative as the majority of his work.

Heard on the radio a new track from Joe's new LP.

The LP is called something like "Flying the Blue Dream" and the track I've heard
is a excelent and classic Blues with (and that's new) some voice on it. I don't
know who sings (may be him) but it's good. The song was called "Big, bad moon"
and it reminds me an old tune from "Canned Heat" (sp?)

Well, besides all these current speed demons everyone is recommending, I would
also suggst you check out a couple 'classics'.

Jeff Beck's 'Blow by Blow' and 'Wired' ablums laid a lot of groundwork for
future guitarist. These are both instrumental.

Ronnie Montrose ("Town Without Pity") also did some nice stuff, as does Carlos
Santana ('Moonflower' is a nice live/best of album). These have both
instrumental and vocal tracks on them.

Richie Blackmore does some real nice stuff, but I can't think of any one album
to recommend getting. Most of the good stuff is scattered through tons of
rubbish on the Rainbow albums.

Allan Holdsworth is also very good, although I'm not as familiar with his
stuff as I am with the previous ones I mentioned. I have 'Metal Fatigue' and I
enjoy that a lot.

I'm not sure if these guys are what you are looking for, but I thought I'd
mention them just for your info....

Why you do like Not of this Earth better then Surfin..? (not

    re: Mike

Second on Alan Holdsworth, very good instrumental guitar work. Be
prepared though, it's esoteric jazz. He's really into dissonant
harmonies which I love, but a lot of people can't deal with it. As a
player, you have to respect his style and chops though.

Steve Morse has at least two albums of instrumental music, but it's
    pretty mellow.

I love the instrumental stuff Jeff Beck did. In addition to the ones
Alan mentioned, the live one with Jan Hammer is pretty good too.

For melodic instrumental jazz, nobody tops Larry Carlton in my book.

Well, Not of this Earth is compositionally way superior to Surfing,
and I think Joe was more creative on the first lp. The songs have
more vicious grooves, and more manic soloing. Surfing was good,
but a lo of it sounded the same to moi ...not that it wasn't good,

Keaggy, recognizes both of the above as influences and I've heard him
single out their styles in his songs. I think I would like AH. I

Makes sense. I think that I liked Surfing... a little better because
it had more energy, more fire in a lot of the songs. Not of... seemed

I like them too, but they don't really do much instrumental work. (thot

I bought the new issue of "Guitar World". Satch was the cover feature
and the interview was all about his new LP "Flying in a Blue Dream".
They also included a little flexi-disc that has a song from the new album
called "The Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing".

Sounds pretty good! It is a little different from his other material
that I've heard, but I still like it.

The interview states that he does most of his work on a 4 track. He
uses an Alesis HR16, a modified black Ibanez 540R (custom neck, DiMarzio
PAF pickups, and bent whammie bar). His other Ibanez has EMGs. His
acoustic is a Yamaha APX, and his banjo is a Deering (strat 6 string
banjo). For bass he plays a Ibanez SRO5 into Stu Hamm's Fender
    Sidekick amp.

Satch's amps: 3 Marshall 100w heads ('68 Super Bass Head, '79 Mark II
lead, new Jubilee series model). Cabs are Marshall 4x12's with 25w
speakers. Also, a Fender Princeton Reverb, Roland JC120, Mesa/Boogie
Quad Preamp (right into the board). He doesn't record with the amps
and uses the 2 or 3 setting.

Effects: Boss distortion, Chandler Tube driver, CryBaby wah-wah, Scholz
Rockman (for clean), TC Electronics 2290 and DigiTech's IPS33 (Smart
    Shift).

I took that flexi-disc out of Guitar World ("Mystical Potato Head

    "Dreaming #11".

I really like this tune! It is sort of a bluesy cut. The "Groove"
part has to come from the rhythm guitar. Not very complex, it is
about 6 seconds looped into a delay throughout the song. The leads are
    hot!

That's kind of what I thought! It was playing kind of in the
background and I kept having to ask if it was the same tape. The songs

re: Not of this Earth .vs. Surfing with the Alien

It all depends on what you're listening for. If you're looking for
blazing instrumental rock, you'll probably like Surfing better. NotE
is tastefully understated, has more mellow arrangements for the most
    part.

Give it a chance, Not of this Earth is one that REALLY grows on you
over time. The music is VERY emotional, if you can get into it.

They're both compositionally superior, and both contain outstanding
performances. I like them both (and Blue Dream...), but for different
    reasons.

My favorite Satriani song, "Rubina", is on NotE. It's named after his
    wife and it's beautiful.

He certainly seems to be playing the small places. The place he
played in Denver only seats a couple of thousand. It sold out VERY
    quickly.

Perhaps he prefers the intimacy of the smaller venues, I've read
interviews where some artists have said that. His music is very
intimate, so that would seem to fit, at least in my mind.

I would say that he's probably losing money by not playing larger
places though, because there's definately a lot more demand if he's
selling out everywhere. I doubt he's overly concerned about that
though, doesn't seem to fit with how I perceive his personality.

The Satriani show at the Orpheum on Friday was a classic! The
three piece band composed of Joe, Stuart and Jonathan started out
with a blazing rendition of "Flying in a Blue Dream", which quickly
kicked into a great sounding version of "Ice 9".
The show had a great pace, and the light show was pretty decent.
Joe played the acoustic version of "I Believe", then whipped out
his gold Ibanez and played "Circles". Before the solos came around
he also played "Crush of Love" off "Dreaming #11". Stuart did a
basic 15 minute solo like before, doing a jazzy version of the Peanuts
Theme Song that got the crown going. Jonathan's drum solo really
impressed me. He was very tight and didn't miss a beat while adding
some interesting fillers, etc. Joe's solo was patent "god like"
and after that they kicked into "Mystical Potato Head Grove Thing".
After playing a couple more songs of "Not of this Earth" and
"Flying..." they came back out for a blinding (literally!) encore
of "Surfing with the Alien" and "Always...".

Don't know who's on it, but when he toured the US the backup band was
"Stevie Salas Color Code", a three piece with a black guitar player/singer,
a white bass player with blonde dreadlocks, and a black drummer. Played

I also enjoyed Flying in a Blue Dream at least as much as Joe's other
albums. It wasn't quite as "immediately accessable", but it grew on me
after a few listens and I think the material on that one is easily as
strong as on the other two. I didn't even mind his voice, even though
a lot of people wanted to slam him for putting it on there.

I don't see this as a competation, y'know? I mean, Joe can put out an

I wouldn't think there'd be any competition between Vai and Satch.
It'd be stoopid, because there are *so* many guitarists around that
    could wax 'em both.

I wasn't saying FIABD was a flop, it just didn't grab me straight outta

Get serious, the world is *FULL* of guys with blistering speed - hell,
there are a number of guys that note in this conference that could make
those 2 guys raise an eyebrow or 2. Speed isn't their strong point
though, so it really doesn't matter ... both of these guys know that
speed only impresses guitar players, and fortunately, the world is made
up of lots of other folks. Their phrasing sets them above the zillion
    other fretboard burners ...

I'm not taking *anything* away from either one of them - I love their
work, and will be waiting in line when Satch's next release hits the

Given that almost everyone that's responded to your note is an
accomplished guitar player, I'd say they already know which hand Joe
    uses to pick with...

Lighten up a little, there are lots of picking monsters out there. A
lot of the stuff Steve Morse would send Vai and Satch both back to the
woodshed for awhile to get the picking right on.

If he's got a half a clue as to what the masses want, he'll steer clear
of a "boy, I sure can play fast, can't I ?" type of album. The world's
full of hot dogs. My guess, is that he'll follow *very* closely to
FIABD, a few songs with vocals, maybe a *little* rougher edge, but not
    much.

Well, the masses would like "Surfing With The Alien" II, III, IV, etc.

But, since FIABD was a semi-success commercially, don't think that the
producers won't want a few tunes on the next album that can "safely" be
played on the radio, ala "I Believe" and "Big Bad Moon". I didn't care
too much for FIABD at first, but it's just now starting to grow on me.

455.141On Morse's picking and speed in generalDREGS::BLICKSTEINSoaring on the wings of dawnTue May 19 1992 19:5634

Steve Morse is a monster at picking, but if the issue is "speed alone"
I'm not sure that he is faster than anyone else.

What I am sure of is that his picking is certainly far more versatile
than anyone else I know of.

That is to say, I'm not sure if he can play an PARTICULAR thing any
faster than a zillion other guys, but I would bet heavily that he
can play MORE things faster than anyone else.

He's amazing at string jumps and stuff like that. He can cross pick
a lot of stuff that other guys can only sweep.

Fortunately, like Vai and Satch, speed isn't the goal but it's one
of the means to get to the goal.

I hope the era of putting down players who play fast is over. I got
tired of hearing the cliches about that. It got to a point that in
GUITAR notes where you asked anyone question about technique for speed
and half a dozen guys would come in spouting cliches about "taste".

I even bet someone once that if I mentioned speed I'd get at least
three notes admonishing me to first learn to play with class, and
    yes, I won that bet.

There is nothing wrong with speed. It's a very effective method for
    injecting energy into music.

Yes, some people use it as a sorta "crutch", but too many people hear a
string of 16th notes and immediately dismiss it as "lacking taste".

455.165Joe Satriani - The ExtremistRAVEN1::JERRYWHITERen, what's `TFSO' mean ?Tue Jul 21 1992 19:1562
Just picked up `The Extremist' ... fresh off the UPS truck ! The initial
review ...

10 tracks, weighing in at 47:55 ...

Just my opinion now, I expect a lot of folks to take this effort in different
ways. I *loved* NOTW and SWTA, didn't care too much for FIABD ... and this
smells a lot (to me) like SWTA and NOTW.

I'll grade each cut from 1 to 10, 10 being the highest ...

1 - FRIENDS (3:27): It has a sort of `anthem' feel to it. Makes ya wanna
	stand up and salute *something*.
	RATING - 6

2 - THE EXTREMIST (3:42): The sitar's back, as is the harmonica ! Pretty
	solid tune.
	RATING - 7

3 - WAR (5:46): MERCY ! Pounding mystical riff. By far, the beast on
this CD. Great breaks, etc, blah, blah.
	RATING - 11

4 - CRYIN' (5:42): Very pretty little ditty. If Satch never admitted to
be a closet Beck fan, then this tune would surely blow his cover.
	RATING - 8

5 - RUBINA'S BLUE SKY HAPPINESS (6:10): Acoustic drivel. Don't slam me,
but it sounds like the `highland' stuff that Steve Morse likes to
do. Made me wanna eat a bar of Irish Spring. It mixes pretty
acoustic work with slow driving electric accompanied passages.
	RATING - 5

6 - SUMMER SONG (4:52): Roll the top down. Load up the cooler with
Corona. Put on a condom, things might get ugly. Very reminiscent
	if `Surfing ...'.
	RATING - 8

7 - TEARS IN THE RAIN (1:16): Classical piece. Very well executed. For
those of you planning on dubbing this to a 90 minute cassette, then
this is the tune to omit.
	RATING - 7

8 - WHY (4:45): Real funky, but it probably has the hottest lead passages
	of the whole CD.
	RATING - 8

9 - MOTORCYCLE DRIVER (4:56): Still got the top down ? Well put it up
and roll up the windows. This tune cranks. It has a VanHalen_ish
groove to it, and it's definitely in the wind. I'd put this as the
	#2 burner on the CD.
	RATING - 8

10 - NEW BLUES (6:55): Kinda hard to get into this one. It's slow and
drifty. I was losing interest, but about half way through (2:20),
it transforms into a rock solid groove. It unfortunately doesn't
	stay there very long.
	RATING - 7

"High Tension Wires" is sorta a "Morsified New-Age". It's by far his
most laid-back album (with the obvious exception of "Tumeni Notes").

"Freefall" is not a good representative of the Dregs. It's their very
first release and is really set apart from all subsequent albums.

"Freefall" to me sounds very "quartestish". Every album after that
had that "high powered production" that is a Dregs trade-mark. I'd
also veer away from "Night of the Living Dregs".

You want a representative Dregs album, get "Dregs of the Earth".

I'm also very fond of "Southern Steel" - if you liked "Coast to Coast"
chances are you'd like "Southern Steel" even more.

on MTV way back. I saw that show and I thought he was just saying that
as a joke. I don't really think that was what he was charging for
    lessons.

It wouldn't surprise me to learn that Joe is still teaching. Teaching
is a great way to keep your skills on a subject up to date. If you
don't use knowledge all the time, you tend to forget it, teaching is a
good way to keep using what you know regularly.

I guess it probably wouldn't surprise me to know that he charged a lot
for the lessons too. It could be a tactic to keep the people all wired
about his popularity from bugging him and keep his student list low.
Even if he did charge a thousand bucks an hour for a lesson, I bet he
could still keep a few students on a regular basis.

You mean the one where he grabs the real high harmonic on two strings
by plucking the strings with his right hand 2nd and 3rd fingers, using
his thumb to touch the harmonic point, then nukes it with the bar?

>He used a Marshall JCM900 this time with 3 Marshall 4x12s set up behind him.

I've seen him do the bar with both hands.

The left hand bar thing is a Van Halenism. He grabs a buncha harmonics
around the 5th & 7th fret, then does the bar with his left as he opens
up the volume with his right. (but you knew this...)

Yeah, I know what yuo're talkin about. If you think about the
positioning, its probably not the 5th or 7th fret (equivalent)
harmonic, it's more like the one around the 2nd or just before the 3rd.
I learned this one after watching him do it on MTV several years ago,
it's definately higher then the 5th fret harmonic.

I happened to hear Satriani for the first time on the
radio in OCT 92.They played the "WHY" track from the Extemist.
Most of you must have been listening to him for a long time
to classify this material as "EH".I was awestruck.I love this
guys playing.Along with "Friends","The Extremist" and "War" its
some of the best work I have heard in years. After I picked the
album up I found out he has been around for years and has a few
more album out.No more monastary existence for me.If you guys
are telling me his previous worrk is better than "Extremist"
then I have a lot of pleasant new (old) reviewing to do for
the holidays. In my opinion Joe is excellent!
455.266MSBCS::MCBRIDEHello me... It's me again.Thu Nov 19 1992 15:5426

All of Joe's work is great. His musical style changes slightly
from album to album, but his playing style stays intense. He
is definitely among the top 5 players alive today.

If you're into listening to serious technical guitar playing,
    Satriani is a must.

My least favorite of his disks is "Flying In A Blue Dream", but
not because I don't like the playing or the songwriting. I like
it less than the others because he thought he'd try singing and
it didn't turn out too well. If you have a good technical ear
that can pick apart music and tune out the vocals, then FIABD
    still provides some excellent listening.

I would rate The Extremist as better than FIABD, but slightly
more subdued (from the raw energy perspective) than "Surfing With
The Alien", which I consider a "must have" disc for any serious
    guitar afficionado.

As usual, this is just my not-so-humble opinion. Your mileage
may vary. Law where prohibited by void. Don't try this at home
because I know where you live... etc. etc. :-)

    re: .265

    Welcome!!!

I envy you!! You have some very exciting listening ahead of you....

I grew up on classical music. I played the clarinet in a lot of
different orchestra's, including the local university when I was in
    high school.

Peter Tchiakosvky(sp?) was my boyhood hero. When I was about 16, a
very influential classical clarinetist turned me on to the soprano sax
and to a medium called jazz. I never picked up the clarinet again, and
all of my classical records began to collect dust. My listening turned
to bands like "The Jeff Lorber Fusion"(the sax'ist was a guy named Kenny
Gorelick, better known today as 'Kenny G'), "Weather Report", "The
Yellow Jackets", "Maynard Ferguson" and "David Sanborn".

Then one day a friend of mine tried to turn me on to Rock and Roll. He
had me listen to Hendrix and Zeppelin and the Stones. He called people
like Jimmy Page and Kieth Richards, the greatest musicians of our time.
Because of my background and my lack of exposure to the philosophy of
rock, I viewed these guys as sloppy, messy, musicians. I found there
guitar tone obnoxiuos, grotesque, and devoid of any grace, or musicianship.

Our arguments became so fierce, that I decided to teach myself guitar,
and play with clear, precise tone and clear precise diction. It was my
mission as a niave 18 year old, to save the world from sloppy, messy,
and grotesque guitar playing. I've been playin' axe ever since...

But I needed a hero, it it wasn't going to be Jimmy Page...or even Jimi
Hendrix. Then just when I thought I would never find my mentor, VAN
HALEN came out. Eddie blew me away. But Eddie had this guy in front of
him all of the time, like a fly that would not go away, named Dave...

My first exposure to Joe Satriani was when an old jazz buddy handed me
'Surfin with the Alien'. I WAS DONE!!! I had found what I was looking
for...all of the things I wanted to do, but was too immature a
guitarist, with only a 3 years under my belt.

To me, Joe has all the qualities of a virtuoso. His tone is always
clear, even his dives and whammy pulls. His solo's are based on theory
and modality, well thought out. His style is timeless, like Mozart.
Each album he has put out has that same quality that is Joe. He is
more melody consious than any gutarist I've listened too. His song
writing follows the format of the jazz artist: intro, state a melody, solo,
restate the melody with variations, outro.

Surfing with the Alien, is a timeless classic. You must listen to this
album at least 50 times, IMO. Every track is excellent. Here is a list
of my favorite tunes by him.

    - Driving at Night,(Not of this Earth)
The title is appropriate...listen to this song on a clear night in
light traffic behind the wheel of a sportscar.

    - Crushing Day,(Surfing with the Alien)
This song still sends chills down my spine.

    - Side Two of Surfin'
      Joe's Symphony no. 1....IMO.

    - Back to Shalla Bal,(Flying in a Blue Dream)
      CRANK IT UP!!!!!

    - War,(The Extremist)
      Speaks for itself.

    - New Blues,(The Extremist)
I howl like a crazed dog every time I hear that scream leading into
      the solo!!

BTW, I would like to clarify my opinion of "Flying In A Blue Dream."

It is my least favorite of Joe's offerings only because I don't
like Joe's singing. The album is nothing less than incredible
if you can ignore his voice. I pulled it out last night and
listened to it on the ride home and the guitar just blew me
    away.

He either managed to clue in on his own or somebody else clued
him in and he listened, because on The Extremist he decided to
just shut up and play his guitar. I think this was an excellent
    move on his part.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of Joe's singing either...But some of his best axe
work is on "Flyin' in a Blu' Dream". The solo section in Strange is
pretty wild...but I hardly ever listen to that song 'cause he sings.

I did notice at his recent concert that a lot of Satch fans like his
singing...'Big Bad Moon' and 'I Believe' got Joe a lot of air play and
turned a lot of people onto his guitar playing...people that don't
usually pick up an album with no lyrics.

I agree that Joe was loyal to his TRUE FANS with Extremist...the only
thing that sings on this album is his axe...

    re: .271

Although I played a lot of concerto's, my greatest experience was
sittng in the middle of a 80 piece orchestra...Tchiakosvky blew me
    away.

Hearing, for example, Piano Concerto #1 in B flat, from the reed
section, is quite an experience. I highly recomend it.

No offense intended, but asking me what the clarinet has to do with
Tchiakovsky, is little like asking Jimi Hendrix what distortion has to do
    with the guitar...

Yeah, but so what? You can probably sing better then Bob Dylan, Tom
Petty, John Melloncamp, Michael Stipe, and Lou Reed too, but they've
all put out a lotta great vocal based albums despite their limitations
as vocalists. You don't have to be a great singer to make great music!

Chill out dude. Don't keep takin' me so fackin' seriously.
I recognize the vastly superior musical talent of most of these
guys. Satch is a genius, but I maintain that he should stick
to doing what he does best which is playing guitar. My claiming
that I can sing better is not meant to belittle him nor is it
meant to imply that I'm a great singer.

In case nobody mentioned it, Joe (aka "The Emotionnless Wonder") has a
video out. It's called "The Satch Tapes" and is supposed to be his own
    musical autobiography.

I read a review of it in the free rag from Musicland and the reviewer
slammed it HARD. Said it was "superficial and lifeless" and that "Both
Satriani and his fans deserve better."

I purchased the new "Time Machine" the other day. It's a 2-CD set, one
with new studio and previously unreleased material. The other is a
live recording, much of which was recorded at the Orpheum.

CD-1 has a few real gems on it, but some of it I could've lived
without. The Billie Holiday cover, "All Alone," has a melody that
won't leave my head. Other favorites are the title track, "Crazy,"
"Speed of Light," "Baroque," "Saying Goodbye," "The Mighty Turtle
Head," "Thinking of You," and "Dweller on the Threshold." The rest I'm
    not to crazy about.

CD-2 (live) seems a little dry, and if I may be blunt, emotionless.
The playing is certainly on. They should've mixed more of the audience
though to liven things up a bit. I've only listened to it once a low
volume so I'll have to give it another spin.

It depends on the song and the part. He definitely does use the side
of his pick for tapping on some of his material, he uses his finger for
other stuff. For instance, the tapped section in Satch Boogie is the
    finger.

    I have to agree.

Watched a biography show about Frank Zappa on A&E last night and they
had a couple of interview clips and one stage clip with Vai. The stage
clip had to have been from the 1980-1982 timeframe, because that's when
they said he was with Zappa's band. He was ripping! Even back then,
he was nothing short of a completely amazing guitar player. Blew my
mind! The interview spots were also several years old, since he looked
much younger in them then he does now.

FWIW, they had several performance shots of Zappa in the show as well,
and I really liked his playing and his guitar sound. There was one
clip of him playing a song called "Black Napkins" that I _really_
    enjoyed.

Whatever Vai's relative mental prowess, or personal beliefs, there is

My appologies... I guess I misinterpreted what you said to think that
Satriani or EVH were better musicians. They are very talented and the

I knew it was "similar" to something I had posted before but knowing
that so many people feel that Satriani is not in Morse's class it
didn't strike me as unusual that two people would say that so it
never occurred to me that it might be the same message.
