451.0. "American Music Awards ... what do you think?" by VIDEO::MORRISSEY (When the children cry...) Tue Jan 31 1989 12:22

Any comments about the AMA awards last night that categorized
Van Halen as Heavy Metal and GnR as Pop/Rock?

Kinda ridiculous I thought....but not a bad performance by
GnR and I don't care for them that much.....

I didn't care for the remarks that were made by (i think)
dj jazzy jeff and the fresh prince, or maybe it was another bee-bopper
rapper. They were announcing nominees for best HM album and they
said something like "G n'Res... a..a.a.appetite for desruption"
and "VanHalen.....ohh you ate twelve" talk about NERVE!
I thought G n'Res did a fair job. but was surprised
that they didn't take a couple of awards home with them. to bad
Def Leppard didn't make it there too.

I thought I was gonna kill someone when Def Leppard won "Best
Heavy_Metal Album". Hah!! That album shouldn't even be in
that category!! They were borderline H_M on the last album,
so what does that make "Hysteria"? Top-40, of course.

Guns 'n' Roses should've taken most of those (at least out of
        the choices).

        I was so f*ckin' p*ssed off u wouldn't believe it.

Yeah, a lot of things are discussed elsewhere. But that's the way
a lot of noters do - when a brilliant reply isn't at their fingertips
they dig into the SOAPBOX archives. But then that's what makes
    this such a "happening" conference. 8^) x .0000465

    				Scary
451.7Thought the show was pretty cool.COMPLX::WILLIAMSWed Feb 01 1989 12:4221
Ya, I agree with Shawn. I can't believe Def Leppard got BEST HEAVY
METAL band! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRGH! I like them but their just
a rock band. Van Halen shouldn't even have been in that catagory
any more. They USED to be H_M. The award should have been hands
    down Guns n' Roses.

How about that Little Richard queer? This is the SECOND year in
a row (that I saw) that he gave the award for best soul single and
once again he had to make a five minute big-*ss scene about how
he thinks HE should get the award! The guy won't give up and keeps
ruining the show! He says he's been playing for thirty years and
it's about time he deserves it! GAAAAG! You'd think the guy would
realize he hasn't produced a song in 20 of those 30 years and
everyone thinks he's a pushy little flaming flamingo. I think his
crying is getting old and they should get him out of the ceremonies.

Ya, loved Guns & Roses performance. Did you notice how the band
either blew off Axl at the end when he went to introduce them or
else someone cut off his mike?

    Hammer.
451.8Guns should've "cranked it up"EMASS::APOSTOFor All Those Who Dare Thu Feb 02 1989 18:5916

IMO, I thought that GUNS should have done a different song. I think
Patience is a good tune, but I was hoping they would ROCK the house.
Give the show a little gusto. It seemed to me like they were trying
to prove that they were not just "scratch" musicians, kinda like
"look we are talented guys, this song isn't even hard rock -- see".

I just thought they should have said "up yours" and done a real
    HEAVY METAL song.

I agree with the other replies, Van Hagar lost their H_M when DLR
    left.

the Night_Prowler (been busy for awhile)

451.9well maybe this was itUSADEC::CLUETTFri Feb 03 1989 11:298
I believe they would have done a different song if they had their
drummer for that show..... Patience is probably the only song that they
do that doesn't have a need for drums.
But then again it is a good song on the verge of becoming another
" hit " and maybe they wanted to get it more publicity.

Those sound logical - nah there is no place for logic in this notes
    file.... 8^)

Another thing that irked me was that it was the SAME people
being nominated for different categories. Janet Jackson
(imo) should either be considered for the "dance" topics
or the "Soul/R&B" but not both...

Sometimes I think they should only be nominated for ONE
category and ONE award. There are far too many musicians
who've contributed to music to limit themselves to the
    	top five.

    	RE: Bonzo
The results are compiled by "Cashbox" magazine and I believe

If it makes anyone feel better, NKOTB did a lousy job of
lip syncing....the older blonde one (don't remember his name)
was acting like it was real hard to hit a couple of notes...
that shouldn't have been difficult at all! Made me ill....

Anyhoo....Slash should be shot. No wonder Axl never appears
on any of these things with him....he makes a fool out of himself,
the group and HM in general. Real cool Slash...jerk. Alice
Cooper sounded like sh*t. Great White sounded great I thought
and I really like that tune. Warrant did ok after they got
going. Jani was really shaky for the first few lines. And
I'm a third who'd like to know who gave Jani the shiner!!

All in all the show was pretty decent. I was really happy
for Paula Abdul. Like the MTV Awards, she looks, acts and talks
like she is genuinely grateful and totally shocked. She's cute.
But I was disappointed to see Janet Jackson lip sync her song.
She's talented enough that I would think she wouldn't need to
    	do that.

FWIW I didn't think that Alice sounded so bad, I still enjoyed watching
him. No lip-synch bull either. One thing that I remember thinking was
that they cut the guitar solo short. Was that my imagination or did
    anyone else notice that?

Watching that show was definitely a nauseating experience for the most
part though. I can't believe that NKOTB could actually with "*Best*
of" ANYTHING...! "Most money made" maybe, "most young girls swooning"
maybe, but not best music. And two different awards, give me a break.

Like Alan, I was dying laughing when Sam Kinnison accepted the award
    for Skid Row.

Like I said in mutterings, I was laughing hilariously at Slush. Duff
didn't look like he was exactly on the cutting edge of reality either,
but at least he maintained enough to be polite.

I saw Alice a while back, and whilst the show was very good, Alice's
vocals su*ked. The reason for the showing being good, had nothing
to do with Alice - it was the stage crew, the backing band and the

Personally, I never thought he had a great voice. It's interesting and

probably as a result of all the drinking he used to do. I still enjoy

I think he like many singers are 80% delivery and 20% voice.
his delivers his lyrics in a manner that is uniquely his
he can talk his songs thru and they sound good. I love singers
with great voices with fantastic ranges (Tate,Halford,Pearcy) but
there are some people that can just get thru it with there emphasis
I mean in a weird way it's like I consider Alice to be a Frank Sinatra
of Hard Rock, I don't think Frank Sinatra has a voice, its his
    delivery.

    You won't find a bigger Alice fan than me (6' 3" 210) {ha ha} but

Subject: M.C. Hammer cleans up at American Music Awards
Date: 29 Jan 91 04:36:11 GMT
Priority: regular

LOS ANGELES (UPI) -- Rapper M.C. Hammer, on the heels of five Grammy
nominations, swept five categories Monday at the 18th annual American
Music Awards in a ceremony tinged with concerns over war in the Persian
Gulf.
Hammer, whose album ``Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em'' has sold 8
million copies, won for favorite album in soul/rhythm and blues and rap
categories.
His break-through hit off the album, ``U Can't Touch This,'' won
favorite soul/R&B single. Hammer also was named favorite soul/R&B artist
and favorite rap artist.
Nominated seven times, he was outdistanced in only two areas, both by
Phil Collins, who won for favorite male artist and whose album ``... But
Seriously'' took the favorite album prize in the pop-rock sector.
With the five wins, Hammer has the second highest number of American
Music Awards presented to a single artist in a year. Michael Jackson won
a record seven awards in 1984.
Based on votes cast by a national sampling of 20,000 record buyers,
the American Music Awards are more a measure of popularity and
commercial success than the more established and respected Grammy
Awards, which are chosen by members of the music industry.
Nominees were selected based on year-end sales charts from the music
industry trade publication Cash Box.
Hammer tried to explain his overwhelming success.
``I present myself against the stereotype of a rap artist and some
people might find that refreshing,'' he told reporters backstage.
Hammer, a former Navy seaman from Oakland, Calif., was among several
artists who voiced opinions about the war in the Persian Gulf.
``I believe in giving peace a chance, but once they're over there
defending us, I say, 'Do all you can to stand and win,''' he said.
Janet Jackson was the next highest award winner with three, followed
by Aerosmith, Collins, Reba McEntire, Bell Biv DeVoe and Vanilla Ice,
all with two each.
Vanilla Ice, whose album ``To The Extreme'' currently tops Hammer's
on the sales charts, was voted favorite new artist in the pop-rock and
rap categories.
Vanilla Ice, appearing Monday in a flashy two-piece red, white and
blue outfit, defended himself against reports that he did not have the
rough street-oriented youth he has claimed.
``To the people that try to hold me down, kiss my white butt,'' he
said during the tape-delayed ceremony.
Backstage, squaring off with reporters who questioned him on
discrepancies in his promotional biography material, Ice added, ``People
don't believe a white guy like me can grow up in the streets. Don't
believe the hype.
	``The bottom line is it's not where you're from, it's where you're
at,'' he said.
Janet Jackson won honors as the favorite female artist in pop-rock
and soul/R&B genres and as favorite dance artist.
Aerosmith received favorite heavy-metal album for ``Pump,'' and in a
surprising twist, won as favorite band in the pop-rock category, topping
Bell Biv DeVoe and the heavily marketed New Kids On The Block.
Bell Biv DeVoe, in what was perhaps the first acceptance speech ever
performed to rap music, took top honors for favorite new artist in the
dance and soul/R&B categories.
McEntire, a frequent victor in country music award ceremonies, was
named favorite female country artist for the fourth year in a row and
``Reba Live'' was favorite country album.
Country musician Merle Haggard was presented with Lifetime
Achievement Award, joining the ranks of Michael Jackson and Prince.
``Blaze Of Glory,'' the hit from the soundtrack of ``Young Guns II''
that singer-writer Jon Bon Jovi called a fluke, took the prize for
favorite pop-rock single.
The prize for favorite heavy-metal new artist went to Slaughter.
Madonna, who managed to dominate the scandal sheets again this year
with her voyeuristic ``Justify My Love'' video, bounced back from last
year's shut-out by winning favorite dance-music single for her stylish
``Vogue.''
Madonna was unable to accept her award in person because she was in
New York shooting a film.
Tony!Toni!Tone! was chosen as favorite soul/R&B band.
Garth Brooks, who took the country music scene by storm last year,
won the country single award for ``If Tomorrow Never Comes.''
``It's a total shock,'' Brooks said. ``I'm just starting to come
around.''
Perennial country award winners Alabama won for ninth consecutive
time as favorite country band, duo or group. In that category, they
topped the Judds, the duo currently on a nationwide farewell tour before
mother Naomi Judd retires because of poor health.
Gloria Estefan, in a comeback performance, was greeted by an
exuberant standing ovation. The 33-year-old performer, who sang ``Coming
Out Of The Dark,'' has been recuperating since a traffic accident last
spring left her with a serious back injury.
En Vogue, the female quartet nominated for favorite new dance
artists, serenaded reporters backstage with a four-part-harmony
rendition of ``The Star Spangled Banner,'' which they dedicated to U.S.
troops in the Middle East.
The show was broadcast from the Shrine Auditorium.

No, the song doesn't say you s*ck if you don't like NKOTB,
it's a rebuff to the mountains and tons of criticism they endure.

BTW, why is it that they are so offensive to everyone? Simply because
they were so incredibly popular? I mean, being sick of hearing
a group is no reason to hate them. Hate the music industry and
pop music and its fans in general for making them as popular as
they are/were, but the band certainly is no more offensive or
less talented than scores of other "artists" out there.

Just seems to be another case of "hate 'em cuz they made it"
    syndrome.

/Mike...not a NKOTB fan, but the hatred shown toward the band is
childish and negative, and I understand that that's what the song
    is about.

Why do the entertainment industries 'music, film, radio, books,
theatre', have to have awards ceremonies anyway? Do performers have
such fragile egos that self-agrandisment is the only cure for them!
They get paid enough and have the added bonus of the 'adulation'
of their fans to get them through the day! Not to mention being
written about in the magazines and papers!

No, I believe that the purpose of awards ceremonies are more about
propping up the industries behind the performers.

What a shame that 'concern about the war in the gulf' was not great

I think it's very interesting that the first paragraph lists the
so-called BIG winners! What's the deal? Each of the artists listed
won two awards, with the exception of Billy Ray Cyrus and
Mariah Carey who only won one award...So why wasn't Pearl Jam
(who won two awards) included the the "big winners" category and
Cyrus and Carey relegated to the 6th paragraph?!

sheesh!

I would say that Pearl Jam was a big winner because I personally thought
they had no chance the American Whitebread Music Awards

Michael Bolton? Genesis? Is this one of those sales awards?
