415.0. "Quiet Riot" by ANT::SLABOUNTY (Form Feed = <ctrl>v <ctrl>l) Thu Jan 05 1989 15:34

Quiet Riot has been around for a few years now, and has a
        4-album discography:

The first 3 had Kevin DuBrow as a lead singer:

        Metal Health Condition Critical QRIII

and now they're back in full force ... Kevin was relieved of
his duties (yay!!) and replaced by Paul Shortino (Rough Cutt).
The new single "Stay With Me Tonight" is fantastic, and I be-
lieve it's probably my favorite song by them.

How's the rest of the album? I wanna get the CD, but I'd like
to know how the other songs are.

Carlos Cavazo and Rudy Sarzo, I believe.

Is Chuck Wright still there? I know he had a stint with Impell-
itteri, and he also plays on The House of Lords.

    re: who's left

Probably not too many, since Randy Rhodes is gone, Rudy Sarzo is
off playing with whoever he's with this week, and now Kevin Dubrow
(who I didn't particularly like anyway) has been replaced. Sounds
like just a name, not any old members...

Anyway, when I was in N.C. I listened to a really good rock station
there and they played several cuts off the new QR album. One called
"The Joker", they played a lot, and made their top 10 of the week.
There was at least two others that I heard as well. If that was
old Carlos Casazva (sp) playing, he's beening practicing over the
last few years! I liked what they played quite a bit.

My SO just bought the disc the other night, he seems to like it.
I've heard it only a coupleof time now, but it seems pretty good.
Probably a good bet to get on CD. I like Stay With Me Tonight,
too, but check out The Joker and there's a nice ballad on there,
    too, I think.
Hold on a sec, I think I might be getting confused with the Richie
Blackmore's Rainbow (RJ Dio on vox) tape we picked up the same night.
I'll check tonight on that ballad.

The only original members in the band are Carlos Cavazo & Frankie
    Banali, according to the label.

    Ahem.

Let me do some clarifying (nit pickin?) here. There are 5 QR albums
out with Kevin Dubro on vocals, they are:

    Quiet Riot I
    Quiet Riot II
    Metal Health
    Condition Critical
    Quiet Riot III

The *original* line up consisted of:

    Kevin Dubro - Vocals
    Randy Rhoads - Guitar
    Drew Forsythe - Drums
    Kelly Garney - Bass

Kelly played bass on QR I & II, but Rudy's name and face appear
    on QRII.

The line up for Metal Health changed to:

    Kevin Dubro - Vox
    Carlos Cavazo - Guitar
    Chuck Wright - Bass
    Frankie Banali - Drums

Again, Rudy Sarzo's picture appears on this album, but he didn't play
bass on it! (he's famous for this...same with Ozzy's `Diary' album)

Chuck Writght returned for the QRIII tour but left again. They have
some new dude playin bass. I haven't heard the new Quiet Riot album,
but I think their hey-day is past.

I got them in a used record type store.

The sound quality is bad, and Randy's playing hadn't quite matured
yet, but the tunes are good. Slick Black Cadalac and Winners Take
All are good examples of old tunes redone by the new lineup.

you would agree with me, that Quiet Riot does suck.....they practically
got laughed off the stage!!! fans couldn't wait for them to get
off the stage so that someone good could perform.... were talking
feedback, cracked vocals, and a old hat performance.

I heard a new tune from them on the Headgiver's Ball a few weeks
back, real bluesy, and the new (and GREATLY improved...) singer
sounded a lot like David Coverdale , IMO. I liked it, but I just
can't make myself like Quiet Riot. Metal Health (Bang Your Head)
was OK, in it's time, but those times are light years away !

    re: new Quiet Riot

I don't see why these guys wanted to use the old name! It's a (mostly)
different lineup and a different sound. What I've heard (2 or 3
songs) from the new album, I've liked. Apparently not enough to
go buy it, but it was enjoyable to listen to. :-)

Really is a different sound, I was quite surprised to hear the DJ
    say that was QR.

I also picked up the new QR album, and thought it was pretty good. It has
very little to do with the original sound of the band now. They are a lot
more blues oriented, and soudn like they are right out of the mid-70s.
In fact, (and this is a compliment), they reminded me a lot of Free (remember
Paul Rogers first band?).

Given some time, this could be my favorite QR album out of all of them!

    Hey,
PAUL SHORTINO did alot better in Rough Cutt than
in the generic verion of Quiet Riot! I did however
enjoy most of the album and the new style. Paul should
go back to Rough Cutt if he could pull the guys from
Jailhouse! Quiet Riot should get a new singer more their
style (But please no more of that idiot Kevin Debrow!!)

I thought that the last Quiet Riot album did have another singer (not
Kevin Dubrow)? It's been a couple of years though and I'm not
    absolutely sure.

What I do remember was that there was a personal change in the band and
I liked the new version of the band a lot better then the old stuff.
I think the problem was that they couldn't shake the cheeze-ball rock
image they'd acquired before and nobody gave the new lineup much of a
    chance.

    GH,

QR III had Paul Shortino from Ruff Cutt singing. I liked Kev Dubrow's
voice...but then again I was a QR fan from QR II album! He started the
band, so if he's out, I think it should break up and/or rename!!

Hey, QR's Metal Health lp (their 3rd) outsold Boston and The Beatles
for a first release...ya can't say they suck that much if they sold
upwards of 10+ million lps on their first try. The problem was they
tried to clone their first lp on their 2nd lp, and noone wanted to
    hear that.

You really liked Kevin Dubrow's voice? I always thought it was kind of
obnoxious. I liked Shortino a lot better.

FWIW, I have a bootleg video of Quiet Riot playing like three songs at
a club with Randy Rhodes on guitar. The quality is really poor, but
it's still cool. One of the tunes they did was "Slick Black Cadillac"
    (my absolute favorite QR song).

Don't get me wrong, I didn't say that I didn't *like* the early QR
stuff. I did, but at the same time I thought a lot of it was kind of
adolecent (and so was I at the time). I always thought the lyrics were
pretty dump (but not nearly as bad as Extremes!).

"Slick Black Cadillac" is a killer tune!

    COOL!

QR had 'kicked out' founding member Kevin Dubrow a few years ago,
while floundering in obscurity. QR II (the album) is great, and
the follow-up, Metal Health, was a classic!! I love that album.
I guess you could consider Rudy Sarzo an original member, as he
did the QR II tour with Randy Rhoads and the boys way back when.
Kelly Garney played on the album, but Rudys photo is on the album,
and he did the tour. Oddly enough, Rudy did not play on Metal
Health either, but his photo is also on that album, and he did that
    tour as well.

Can anyone name the 3rd album and tour that Rudy appeared on, but which
he did not play on the album??

There's a "new old" CD out ... and it's called

"Quiet Riot - The Randy Rhoads Years".

Includes a live 9-minute song with a 7 or so minute solo by
    	Randy.

I had read they re-released the old QUIET RIOT I and QUIET RIOT II
albums...is the lp you mentioned a compilation of the two??
415.63BUSY::SLABOUNTYBeing weird isn't enoughMon Dec 06 1993 11:2311

Yup, looks like they took the "highlights" from both albums and
merged them. Also, there are a couple unreleased tracks ...
I think both are schlockey ballads that the liner notes mention
something about being written when Kevin was trying real hard
    	to get signed.

They mention "Japan only" releases of both albums.

Just finished putting in a reply regarding the
aforementioned QR stuff over in the GUITAR conference
under the Randy Rhoads note (221, I believe) Should
have checked here first, but I was thinking about
Randy not Quiet Riot at the time. See ya.

there was a show on Mtv at the weekend called "It came from the 80's"
and showed a selection of 80's music and a "where are they now" part!
The two bands I saw were Quiet Riot and Men at Work.Men at work split
up in '85 and Quiet Riot are playing Cow sheds in Idaho!

btw..Kevin DuBrow is still a knobend!

I saw that too, ian. Kev looks really cool with his new wig! 8^)
The band still sounds killer (I always liked QR), but it's sad they
are hopelessly mired in has-been obscurity. So much for the hey-days
    of 1984!

I give em credit for still "doing it", however.

    \haha!

Kev with his beret on to keep the toupe from flying off!

the bit I laughed at was an old piece of film from about 1984 when they
were all sitting down on one couch and Kev stretches out his arms and
hugs all the bands member to show the "happy family" thing then the
drummer pipes up with "don't touch me".I think they were less than
happy with each other at that time!

I saw it too. They tried to seem happy didn't they?

I'd rather be pouring beer behind the bar than playing the place they were in...
Geez, Idaho! Looked like maybe 300 people there?

Reminds me of the time I saw Steppenwolf (at least they were billed as that) in
a bar in Burlington Vermont. It's a long slide to the bottom from the top, eh?

Kind of like Motorhead/Black Sabbath playing to 750 at Great Woods.

yup its a long slide from the bottom to the top and a quick one for
    some!~

btw..I never considered Quiet Riot to be anywhere near the top!
I think that is one of the bands I would consider the champions in the
    "Most like Spinal Tap" category!

These guys could rock, in their earlier years. They got kind
of boring after what most people believe to be their 2nd album
    	["Condition Critical"].

Have you heard "The Randy Rhoads Years"? It does sound 80-ish for sure
but what really surprised me was Scott Travis on drums! He was on JP's
PainKiller and is now with Rob Halford in Fight. Never heard of him
till he was with JP and then on the QR TRRY disc. Condition Critical
was ok and I have it on album and one other on CD with "Twilight Hotel"
which I think was QR III....?

Scott Travis used to be in Racer X with Paul Gilbert.

And "QRIII" basically sucks, except for "Bass Case".

Of course, Scott Travis was only in Racer X on their Second Heat and
Extreme Volume - Live Vol I and Vol II CDs. There was a different
dude on drums on Street Lethal.
