412.0. "The Year In Metal - 1988" by HAZEL::STARR (Like a fool, fell in love with you...) Tue Jan 03 1989 20:05

Well, another year has some and gone, and it time to reflect on the
past, and to evaluate what has come and gone.

1988 was, IMO, the year when Heavy Metal music really exploded into
the public eye. At no time before now has the music been so popular.

Let's look at the sales: Def Leppard (6 million), Poison (multi-platinum),
Bon Jovi (multi-platinum), Metallica (multi-platinum), Guns and Roses
(multi-platinum), Cinderella (platinum), and many more.

The older warhorses were still kicking around; Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne,
Van Halen, Scorpions, and AC/DC all had major chart success.

And the young guns out there also didn't do so badly; Vixen, Britny Fox,
Bulletboys, Hurricane, House of Lords, Jane's Addiction, Circus of Power,
and Living Colour were all hot this year.

Guitars were back in the spotlight more than ever, with Joe 'Satch'
Satriani leading the way. Following closely were guys like Paul Gilbert
and Vinnie Moore, among others.

Overall, I can't remember another year that HM, from pop/fake/metal to
hardcore/speed/metal, made such an impact in the media, on the charts,
and in the industry as a whole.

Let's keep it rockin' into 1989!

There were a lot of good tunes being kicked around out there. I'm
really proud of MTV for finally acknowledging what was staring them
in the face for so long. They do tend to play the lighter side
of "metal," if you even want to call it that (but that's another
topic altogether), but they're trying. The Headbanger's Ball is
pretty good. I guess they had no choice. No matter what they did,
the Dial MTV countdown was consistently hard rock.

It was the year of Guns & Roses, for sure. Personally, I liked
Kix, Living Colour, Faster Pussycat & Jetboy. The best of the
best was Sam Kinison's "Wild Thing." Talk about scenery!!! (And
    I don't mean Jessica Hahn.

Musically, like Cat says, metal exploded...whether
it was glam or the "real" thing, I loved every minute
    	of it!!!

412.4It was always heavy to meRAVEN1::ROSENBERGwon't get fooled againWed Jan 04 1989 18:418
Yea 1988 was the year that I find out that Heavy Metal was supposed
to be something new. I always thought that I was always listening
to HM when I heard Boston,Black Sabbath,Blue Oyster Cult,Uriha Heep
and any number of other hard rock'en bands. Sh*t we were playing
in air bands and sweating our ass off in Detroit long before the
lip sinc shows were out. IMO heavy Metal has been around for years.
