    			HEAVY METAL MUSIC
"I am a student at a high school and would like to comment about
the influences heavy metal music has on teenagers.
Groups of people, mostly parents, have recently gotten together with
the Parents Music Resource Center, an organization whose members
believe that rock music, heavy metal in particular, has harmful
effects on the youths of today. They single out people like Ozzy
Osbourne, Metallica, and Iron Maiden. The image these bands project
may be slightly violent or satanic, but that is not what their music
    is about.
Ozzy Osbourne's album covers look satanic; there is no denying that.
But when the devil is mentioned in the songs, it is to warn that
following him will only lead to misfortune.
Another major issue is whether songs influence teens to do drugs
or commit suicide. A few years back, Ozzy was blamed for the death
of a high school student because he had been listening to one of
Ozzy's songs, "Suicide Solution", when he killed himself. The song
may be depressing, but the main point of it is that committing suicide
is a waste because things will always get better. There are many
    depressing songs and they are not all written by heavy metal artists;
therefore, it is ridiculous to single that group out.
As for drugs, being a teenager myself, I know that kids do not do
drugs just because a song mentions it. It is their own personal
decision and if they were influenced to do it, it was most likely
because of their friends, not the music.
In defense of heavy metal music, I would like to point out that
there are several bands, such as Stryper, a Christian group, that
have tried to change the image of this type of music. They sing
about God and the good things that will happen to you if you believe
in Him and are strongly against drugs, drinking, and doing anything
sinful. Yet bands like these are still ridiculed.

Thought all of you might find this interesting...

This is a letter to the editor in the January issue of Circus magazine.

There is something scary going on in Washington D.C. right now. The
Child Protection and Obscenity Enforcement Act - HR3889. This act will
destroy the rock industry if passed. As stated by Micheal Greene in
Billboard Magazine (9/17/88), "Under the bill as currently drafted, if a
recording were found obscene in any court, the federal government would be
empowered to seize the assets of the record company that manufactured it,
the retail chain that sold it and the artist who created it. That's a
direct line from the store counter to the songwriter!"
Do you realize the power this bill is going to have if passed? Who
is to say what is offensive? What is cosidered offensive in one area is
considered inoffensive in another. If this bill is passed, rock & roll
will be dead. Ozzy, Def Leppard, Motley Crue and Bon Jovi, among others,
will be off the shelves permanently.
This is censorship in disguise. Please write your congressmen and
senators and let them know you believe in American freedom and will not
stand for your rights being taken away.
409.3Experts my foot -- look for the real reasonEMASS::APOSTOFor All Those Who Dare Thu Dec 29 1988 19:0537

I remember watching the entire session in congress when the PMRC
presented their "case" (it was on C-SPAN).

These two psychology "experts" came before the committee, and said
that among all the troubled(read this as delinquents) teenagers
that they had come in contact with, something around 90% of them
    listened to heavy metal music.

    		SO WHAT ??

All I could think of was why one of the congressman didn't ask these
"experts" the following question : "If there was no such thing as
heavy metal music, are you saying that there would be no teenage
    criminals??"

Obviously the answer is -- that of course there would still be crimes
committed regardless of the existence of heavy metal music. My point
is that it is analogous to saying that all criminals like Pizza
    therefore Pizza causes crime...

The real causes of these societal problems lie in the poverty and
poor education these kids are exposed to. They feel hopeless and
outcast, and rebel by listening to a brand of music that is filled
with energy (as a form of uplifting their emotions)....

Of course there are other reasons for crime (child abuse, etc.),
and there may be some rare cases when heavy metal influenced someone
somewhere to do something destructive; but I think most of you agree
that music doesn"t CAUSE behavior, music is an outlet -- an emotional
support -- whether it be the Blues(when you're down), Classical(when
you're pondering), or Rock(when you want to feel "up")....

I have been pretty quiet here in metal notes over the last month
or so, but it really cracks me up when everyone attacks the PMRC
using the same arguments and saying what was already said. IMO HM
notes is not the place to plead a case on whether Tipper Gore is
a bitch or not, or cencorship, or any of the other points we constantly
bring up. I'm sure we all agree with just about everything said
about the PMRC, so why keep bringing it up? We won't change anything
by sitting around mumbling amongst ourselves, so if you wanna do
something then fine, I'll be behind you, but my arm hurts from NEXT
UNSEENing all the PMRC clone notes.

I heard a clip on the radio this morning. It was from back in the
late 60's and I think it was Art Linkletter. He was talking about
how all the lyrics of all the top 40 songs were encouraging young
people to "take a trip" [presumably on LSD]. He also said that
the artwork on all of the album covers had "subliminal messages"
designed to get kids into drugs. It sounded a lot like the stuff
going on today with the anti-HM do-gooders.

    Then the radio station played...

Without creating another topic for this, I did a dir/title=article
and came up with two topics.

Reprinted from Time Magazine, May 7, 1990 as part of a larger
    	article entitled, "X Rated".

Rock'n'Roll was born an outlaw. With heavy metal, it grew up
to be outlandish. Concerts given by Motley Crue [why do they
always use these guys?! -Kim], a longtime metal favorite from
Los Angeles, play like big-budget Halloween parties: spooky
stories in rhyme, about sex and death, illustrated with Grand
    	Guignol tableaux

Some of the Crue's songs possess a certain lumpem poetry. From
"Wild Side": "I carry my crucifix/ Under my deathlist./ Forward
my mail to me in hell." This is the sort of thing that might
be written by that cool-creepy high school kid who reads a lot
of Poe and William Burroughs. It's forthright exaggeration,
often with a wicked grin, as in the Crue's top-of-the-charts
balled "You're All I Need", about a man in a padded cell
reminiscing about his late girlfriend: "Laid out cold./ Now
we're both alone,/ But killing you helped me keep you home."
Is there anyone out there besides Tipper Gore who doesn't see
    	that it's a joke?

Metal musicians promote themselves as the beyond-bad boys of
rock, and they make good on the promise. These guys are
performers, and their audiences get revved up on the lurd
theatricality. That same zest for overstatement may explain
the puppy lust [hee hee...I like that! -Tig] that metal's
young fans lavish on their heroes. Some years back, a San
Antonio radio station offered free concert tickets for the
best reply to the question "Waht would you do to meet the
Crue?" A 16-year-old girl provided an elaborate sadomaso-
chistic scenario. A boy, said he would give the band his
mother. A 13-year-old girl wrote, "I'd leave my t!ts to
    	Motley Crue." Hey--bring back Menudo.

Yeah I saw that too. I like Larry, but I'm not sure why they picked him. Sort
like Charlie Watts - you know?

I also don't agree with Black & White being the worst video. The video imagery
they did at the end is pretty involved. When they melt from one person to the
other.

Oh well it's just another poll right? Can't agree with everything.

Richard Thompson is the former guitarist for Fairport Convention. He then
went on to record with his wife Linda, and they released an album called
'Shoot Out The Lights', which is widely regarded as a *brilliant* album.
Nowadays, he records solo album and tours (mostly acoustic).

Considered "folk", but he's also rock and blues. I saw him open for Bonnie
Raitt, and thought he was fantastic!

Oh, not really. I should have mentioned that he really is a great guitar
player. Definitely some serious technique, although not really a speedster
in the normal sense. Very tasty stuff....

HONK IF YOU'VE SEEN DOLLY IN THE BUFF! Country queen DOLLY
PARTON stunned onlookers when she jumped out of a car naked at traffic lights
in Los Angeles, California. Other drivers gasped as the fiftysomething singer
ran round the car in nothing but high heels, and slipped back inside just as
the lights turned green. She recalls, "I've never run so fast in my life,
but a bet is a bet. My pal JUDY OGLE was driving and somehow the conversation
got round to nudity. She said there was too much of it in the movies when it
wasn't really necessary. I said it was a natural state. She said, `Okay, I
bet you wouldn't be seen naked in public'." That was one challenge Parton
couldn't refuse. She adds, "Afterwards Judy drove off wide-eyed with
amazement. It didn't strike me until a few blocks later that she could have
locked the doors while I was still outside."

THE SMASHING PUMPKINS canceled a concert in Northern Ireland last
night after a girl was crushed at their concert in Dublin the previous night.
The American rockers have pulled out of the gig in Belfast and the girl is
still in the hospital in critical condition.

DEF LEPPARD guitarist PHIL COLLEN claims the group's marital
difficulties have drawn them closer together. Frontman JOE ELLIOT is
divorced and drummer RICK ALLEN is facing charges for allegedly battering
his wife at Los Angeles, California airport. Collen says, "I'm going through
a divorce, which is kind of hard because I have a six-year-old son. Our
singer, Joe, has also gone through a divorce. When we get in a studio really
weird things start happening." Let me guess - is violence involved?

BERNADETTE O'BRIEN, the 17-year old girl who was hospitalized from
injuries received at a SMASHING PUMPKINS concert in Dublin, Ireland last
Saturday has died. The young student from Shanagarry, County Cork, lost her
16-hour battle for life in a Dublin hospital on Sunday. She had suffered a
heart attack and massive internal injuries when fans surged forward during
the concert in the Point Theater. Two security men lifted O'Brien out of the
crowd and she was ferried by ambulance to the city's Mater Hospital. But,
doctors turned off the student's life support machine less than a day later as
her parents wept by her bedside. Fans of the band who were at the show are
demanding to know why security staff at the venue didn't stop the group's
Saturday night showdown before the events which lead to O'Brien's death
occurred. According to bystanders, the group shouldn't have taken the stage
because the crowd was already crushing people towards the front of the stage
before the band even started to perform. Eyewitness MICHAEL GREENE says,
"There were people with nosebleeds right down the front, who could hardly
breathe. The real damage came during the group's second song ZERO. The gig
came to a halt for about 10 minutes with BILLY CORGAN pleading with the
crowd to stay back and let the injured out." Another eyewitness said that
Corgan broke off mid-song and screamed, "It's only a concert, it's not worth
dying for. Do you want to see the ones you love get hurt?" Greene also said
that the band was not ultimately to blame for the incident and tried
desperately calm the 8,500-strong crowd in order to diffuse the situation .
Greene said, "They promised to 'play forever' and 'until your ears bleed' if
the crowd would have just calmed down." But, minutes later, the group left
the stage after hearing one fan, O'Brien, had been critically injured and
rushed to the hospital. Five other fans were also hurt, one with serious
spinal injuries. Irish police were quick to blame the practice of
"body-surfing" - fans being passed along the top of the crowd - for the
terrifying crush, but concerned fans claim unscrupulous ticket touts selling
forged tickets and "concert hooligans" are to blame for the tragedy.
Eyewitness STEPHEN McCALL says, "It was just too packed - well beyond the
capacity. There were loads of tickets being sold outside. And there should
be an age limit at concerts like these - I saw kids there who must have been
10 or 11. There were also loads of so-called fans who obviously turned up
for the mere fact it was a concert, and it gave them the opportunity to
stamp on some heads and break bones legally." Promoters at the venue have
issued a statement saying 110 security men, two doctors and a full
complement of medical personnel had been at theater that night. A full
investigation is to be carried out. In the meantime, our deepest condolences
go to the family of Ms. O'Brien. Rock and roll should be fun and part of the
fun is being a little out of control, but the practice of moshing with the
purposeful intent of causing injury to other people is stupid and dangerous,
and as events have now proved, can be deadly. Anyone involved
in this kind of behavior who is reading this NEEDS TO STOP ACTING LIKE
AN IDIOT. This really bums us out.

set up on the floor- that didnt last long- these chairs were being
passed back all the way to the last section on the floor!!! Here we
were with chairs piled up in front of us with the crowd in front doing
    the body slamming/surfing thing!

I definately agree its not he bands fault! Ive seen more than enough
bands who warn the crowd to please step back, etc...

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Pat Boone's fans may not
be in the same mood for metal as the gospel
                         singer.

Boone said Wednesday that a Christian television
network canceled his weekly gospel music show
after thousands of viewers called in outrage over
                         his dabbling into heavy metal.

The Trinity Broadcasting Network on Tuesday
                         canceled ``GospelAmerica,'' which appeared on
400 stations worldwide. Trinity officials said
Boone was invited to appear on another show to
explain himself, and ``GospelAmerica'' will stay off
                         the air in the meantime.

The singer said a charity golf tournament in
Tennessee that he has hosted for 20 years also
                         may sever ties with him.

Boone, 62, said he apparently offended many
fundamentalist Christians when he appeared in
black leather and fake tattoos on the American
Music Awards show on Jan. 27.

``I thought everybody saw it for what it was, sort
of a parody, just a send up,'' Boone said. ``Of
course, it was difficult for Christian people, who
have followed me for years and years. It seemed
like I had burst out in some demented way.''

The album, ``In a Metal Mood: No More Mr.
Nice Guy,'' features such tunes as Metallica's
                         ``Enter Sandman'' and Alice Cooper's ``No More
                         Mr. Nice Guy.''

But the music is sung in typical Boone style with an
orchestra backing him up. Boone, a gospel
performer for three decades, said he just wanted
                         to try something new.

J- "Jesus Freak" is a tune by a band called DC Talk. It is an awesome
