370.0. "Styx" by ANT::SLABOUNTY (Form Feed = <ctrl>v <ctrl>l) Tue Nov 29 1988 20:25

Well, I extracted all the 'Styx' replies from the 'new releases'
note and they will follow my intro. I've liked these guys for
years ... Dennis has a great voice and Tommy is an OK guitarist
for the music he plays. Partial discography:

The Styx song in question is "Suite Madame Blue" - no relation to
Queensryche, other than they are both good songs.

Incidently, that Styx song is from Equinox, not Kilroy (barf) was

Styx had some good stuff, but (IMO) their best material was on the
albums prior to The Grand Illusion.

While Kilroy wasn't a great album, at least the band had the guts to try
and make a concept album, and one with an anti-censorship messag at that!
(And this was before the PMRC even existed.)

I like 'Kilroy', but love 'Paradise Theatre' album. 'Grand Illusion' is
really good, and I love 'Equinox' and 'Crystal Ball'. 'Cornerstone' was
metza-metza....

re: Styx

Although some may argue their right to be discussed here, let me state this;
Styx rocked harder than almost any of the pop-metal bands that are out
today. Sure, their biggest hits were syrupy ballads, but if you know
songs like like "Blue Collar Man", "Suite Madame Blue", "Miss America",
"Half-Penny, Two-Penny", etc., you know what I'm talking about.

Anyone remember when Tommy Shaw was on WBCN in 1981 around Christmas-time?
He went into the stations studio with an acoustic guitar, and just played
music and hung out for an entire afternoon - singing X-Mas carols, and
Beatles songs, and just having fun. It was the best radio interview I
had ever heard!

A good Styx Cd to buy is the 25th Anniversary greatest
hits by A@m. It contains the best songs from Equinox up until the Live

    	- Styx (including Movement for the common man= ELP covered
it on one of their later albums)

370.18new Styx albumHAZEL::STARRSRV.....I can't believe you're gone.......Tue Oct 02 1990 18:1472
I got an advance copy of the new Styx release. Although there are no liner
notes, I believe it is the entire old lineup with the exception of Tommy
Shaw (who is off with Ted Nugent in Damn Yankees). I heard that Glen Blotnick
(sp?) is taking his place. I don't know who he is, but the name sound familiar
(maybe from Little River Band?).

The new album (don't know the title - its only listed as 'Styx' on the tape)
is actually very good. It it very reminiscent of the 'Grand Illusion' and
'Cornerstone' era. Very little electronics, lots of harmonies. The titles are:

Side 1
1. Love Is The Ritual
2. Show Me The Way
3. Edge Of The Century
4. Love At First Sight
5. All In A Day's Work

Side 2
1. Not Dead Yet
2. World Tonight
3. Carrie Ann
4. Homewrecker
5. Back To Chicago

"Love Is The Ritual" is the first single, and sorta reminds me a bit of Duran
Duran. A little funky, a little rock, its a pretty decent song, but not
representative of the whole album.

"Show Me The Way" is a power ballad, sounding a little more like REO
Speedwagon than Styx, but its ok. The classic Styx harmonies show up here
for the first time on the record.

"Edge Of The Century" is the best song on the album, and it kicks! Reminds
me a lot of "Miss America" from 'Grand Illusion'. Good, rockin' guitar -
this shoulda been the first song released!

"Love At First Sight" is another mid-tempo ballad. You can really hear
Dennis DeYoung's influence on the slower songs - he's immediately
identifiable! (Although songwriting credits aren't listed.)

"All In A Day's Work" should really please old-time Styx fans. Its a fairly
sparse arrangement, mostly just a single acoustic guitar with a small touch
of synth in the background. Nice harmonies. Reminds me a little of "Sing For
The Day" from 'Cornerstone'.

Side two opens with "Not Dead Yet", which, of all things, is a barroom rocker!
Sounds good too! But its something I would expect more from the Fabulous
Thunderbirds as opposed to Styx. But its a nice suprise!

"World Tonight" is a sort of a standard AOR song, nothing special, but not
too bad either.

Just when I thought we'd had enough ballads, "Carrie Ann" pops up. Not a
remake of the classic Hollies tune, but it could just as easily be called
"Babe, Part II". But despite the fact that its a ripoff of an earlier hit,
its still a nice song.

"Homewrecker" is a fairly wretched rocker. Avoid.

"Back To Chicago" is an ambitious track that works pretty well. It starts
with a little symphony on it, but that quickly gives way to a nice pop beat,
with a very cool horn section in it. And, of all things, the song contains
a clarinet solo! A first listen, the song seemed a little awkaward. But its
really growing on me, and now I like it.

Overall, this is a very strong album, if you like Styx. The lyrics aren't
quite as strong as they could be, but I think that's because the past few
albums were concept-oriented, and gave them more direction. A couple clunkers
on here, but the best songs stand right next to their catalog as some of their
best. I'd definitely recommend it if you're a Styx fan!

Yup, JY does "Homewrecker", and it's a good thing too. After
listening to this album twice, I've come to realize that I'm
sick of hearing Dennis DeYoung's voice. He has a great voice,
    	but I've had enough.

"Homewrecker" is the only song that JY does on the new one,
and it's too bad ... I think he could've done a good job on
"Not Dead Yet", and maybe others. [I miss Tommy Shaw too!!]

    	The album's 1/2 good ... every other song is a ballad. I
wish they had more rockin' stuff, but oh well.

My band played a huge mega-keg party Saturday night. I'm mentioning
it here because it was a Halloween type party and we played Styx's
"Castle Walls" for our opener. It sounds something like the theme
to the Halloween movie. Really set the tone. I don't mean we played
it on tape. We actually played it, after the last swell we broke
into "Best of What I Got" by Bad English - and the crowd of over
300 partyers loved it. What a great first gig with a new band!

"Castle Walls" is a killer tune!!!

    GTI:
I picked up the new CD about a week ago, and it really hasn't caught
my attention, yet. I always end up putting another CD in instead.
I have listened to it about 4 or 5 times tho and here's my perception
    of the album so far...

What the heck happened to John Panazzo!? Has he gone soft in his older
age? Where's that radical drumming I used to love; "Eddie", "Blue
Collar Man", "Renegade", "Rockin' the Paradise", blah, blah, blah!

I never really thought that Chuck was a radical bass player or
anything, but I've always liked his playing, and thought that Styx
always had a good rhythm section. Well, not no more!

Yup, I agree that there really is too many mooshy songs and way too
much keyboards compared to their older stuff(save Kilroy Was Here).

Overall, I'm pretty disappointed with their effort. One of the CD's I
grab instead of grabbing the new Styx' is Damn Yankees.

I've noticed that Dennis DeYoung produced this album, I think he oughta
be shot and the rest of the guys should go back into hybernation until
they're ready for a SERIOUS comback effort. And DROP THIS NEW GUY
GLEN, AND GET TOMMY BACK FROM DAMN YANKEES!!!

I saw 'em in Burlington in 1977 when they had just released Crystal Ball (I
think) They were great. Did a lot of their oldies then ;-)

A snowstorm forced a postponement of their Montreal Forum show and they did 2
shows in Burlington since they had to come back to the area.

Who was the original guitarist? He was no big loss as I remember...

I don't like their new stuff at all.

I'm only surprised that you were surprised.

While the band has, IMHO, suffered the loss of one of the world's
greatest tune-writers in Kerry Livgren, the players they have now
are very competent, and they still have the guy who I feel has the
best voice in R&R (Steve Walsh).

I've seen them in the current configuration a number of times and my
feeling is that Kerry Livgren's songs are so incredibly good, that
almost anyone could play them (even Metropolis) and the quality of
    the songwriter comes thru.

In fact, I think so highly of Kerry Livgren as a songwriter that I'd
say that even with Steve Morse, they couldn't live up to the Livgren
standard. That's how much I respect Kerry Livgren.

..well, kansas has *always* been a favorite of mine..long before
any labels like 'progressive'...or whatever ..were placed on them....i
grew up on this stuff.....so i guess i'm dating myself...;")...which
is ok cuz a funner date you couldnt' possibly have...;').....anyway,
the one song that i was surprised to learn was a Styx song, was the
encore tune.....ian what was the name of that tune?....the word
'gallows' i think is in the name..anyway, i was incredibly surprised to
find out that that was a styx tune...i've always liked that tune ...and
they have some other tunes that are pretty good....tommy shaw is good
and i like their 3 part harmones....but just about anything the keyboard
player does reminds me of liberace....yecch,.,..and his voice is
    annoying as all get out........................../k

We really think we're about ready to book a gig.

First we lost a guitarist, then we lost a bass player so we've been
getting those folks up to speed.

Actually the new guitarist is rather amazing at learning stuff. In his
audition we asked him to learn 2 or 3 tunes and he came in with about
    12 down cold!!!

It wasn't very hard to decide which guitarist we had auditioned would
    get the gig. ;-)

I think we'll probably be playing gigs again by August or Septemeber,
    but hopefully sooner.

Hey, I just got my copy of Styx "Greatest Hits" from BMG (doing that
70's thing!) Here is the list of what it contains:

    Lady '95 (a re-recording done on June 11, 1995 when DeYoung, Shaw,
Young and the Panozzos got together for the first time since 1984 to
    record)

    The Best of Times
    Lorelei
Too much time on my Hands (GTI's theme song! :^) )
    Babe
Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)
    Show Me the Way
    Renegade
    Come Sail Away
    Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)
    The Grand Illusion
    Crystal Ball
    Suite Madame Blue
    Miss America
Mr. Roboto (Mr. Fennell's fav I believe!)

Lady is the first song I remember hearing. That would be around 1974-75 I
guess... The song I was trying to rememeber was Suite Madame Blue. By the time
The Grand Illusion/Paradise Theater came out they were too predictable and I
gave up on them.

They were good in their time.

    They definitely peaked on Equinox.

I think John Curlewski (guitar) kept the earlier stuff a littler
    harder.

An old girlfriend absolutely loved this band and dragged me to
see Tommy Shaw live twice (band had broken up) - the tortures of
the damned I tell ya... "Girls with Guns" :^P

I forgot about "Miss America" ... another of my favorites of
theirs. The live version is even better than the studio vers-
ion, which is quite rare, IMO.
