343.0. "Info about the Musicians Institute" by SLDA2::SCHNARE () Thu Nov 17 1988 17:02

Does anyone have information about the Musicians
Institute in Los Angeles? I'm specifically looking for
	info about:

		- cost (tuition AND living costs - does the
school have dorms or otherwise make
			accomodations available?)
		- accreditation and reputation
		- curriculum ( I have a catalog coming, but I'm
			looking for OBJECTIVE information too.)
		- any general information, gut feelings, even rumors
about this or similar programs and their
			value, usefulness, benefits, etc.

		- other schools with similar programs (bass, in
		   particular).

	Thanks,

	Tom

Is this the same thing as GIT??? If so, I think there's
a topic somewhere in here already.

    	If not, ignore me.

It used to be GIT, then they added BIT (Bass Institute) and another
one for singers (I think), then combined all the names into MI.

re: .0 Sorry, I don't know anything about the place, just the names
    and the general precept.

    Tom,

The only things that I know about the school are this, the tuition
is approximately $5000 for the entire B.I.T. Course, this runs just
shy of one year, with courses starting in March and September of
every year. This way there is always one starting class six months
ahead of you or six months behind (depending on which way you look
at it). Being a bass player of five years with european tour
experience and currently in the Hard Rock/Commercial Metal Band
"Sudden Impact", I have been interested in the school for a few years
now. I have been to the school last August for a visit of the
facilities with my old guitarist who lives 10 minutes from the school.
The school is absolutely great. It is EXTREMELY intimidating though!
You will probably learn more from the musicians attending the school
than from the actual course itself. There are no dorms! From what
I was told while I was there it could happen withing the next couple
of years but problaby wont. There are a number of apartments in
the area, there are also a few apartment buildings that rent entirely
to students only. The only thing you can do is take trip out there
a month or two in advance and talk to some of the students that
are leaving as your coming in and make arrangements with there landlord
to take over th apartment. Be prepared! They ain't cheap! most
placces are running for anywhere from $500 to $700 for one or two
bedroom places, you can get a little cheaper, but I wouldn't suggest
it, cuz in those neigborhoods, it's not worth the extra savings!
Try to find someone who is starting classes around the same time
and become roomates, it's cheaper, you can study together, jam,
    whatever.

When I visited I was greeted at the front door by about 40 musicians
all jamming to different things on the sidewalks between classes,
95% of them had hair longer than myself which pisses me off even
more than the fact that they could all probablt play better than
me with there eyes closed! Its very intimidating, but if your heart
is set on it, then by all means go. I'm still thinking about it
myself. But anyway, hope I cleared a few things up for you. If
you have any other questions drop me a line or give me a call at
DTN 467-3404 over at Marlborough (MRO 3).

    Later on,
